Zero‑Star Review for CarMax CarMax quoted me a written offer of $2,400 for my vehicle -- an offer they confirmed in writing and tied to my VIN. My vehicle is fully registered and titled in a U.S. state, exactly as their own requirements specify. Despite that, when I arrived to complete the sale, CarMax refused to honor their own written offer and claimed they could not accept the vehicle. No explanation made sense, and none aligned with their published policies. This was a complete waste of time. I followed every instruction, brought every document, and met every requirement. CarMax still refused to honor the offer they themselves generated. A company that won't stand behind its own written appraisal is not trustworthy. Zero stars. read more

When you follow the online prompts to sell a car, you think that CARMAX will get the job done. I wound up selling my car to a junker. The online tool stated that they would pick up my car, for a $199 fee. On the day of the appointment they reneged on that offer and they could not provide me a good reason. I was told, "It could be a number of factors." I filled the online application and was offered $1700. When my daughter arrived at CARMAX, (having payed $115 for a ten mile tow), CARMAX said they could not take the car because it hadn't been registered in Va. The car had been parked, legally, at my am daughter's home. The DMV was notified and plates, tags were removed. The car had been parked for 2 years. I've seen CARMAX in Spotsylvania County purchase a used 'car, that had not been registered for 18 months. They told my friend not to worry about it- that they'd take care of it. She was purchasing another car from them. I guess that makes CARMAX's decision much easier. No one at the CARMAX in Midlothian could make that decision. I wound up selling the car well below that offer of $1700 - but I had to get it done because my daughter sold the home where it was parked. This leaves a very bad taste in my mouth about CARMAX. My older vehicle had 72k miles on it (and was a 2006). The hood of the car needed painting - no body damage, no accident. A good auto, with title in hand. When I purchase my car, I will not use CARMAX. read more

They lie consistently and the finance department is a circus fire. Wasted our entire day here because they didn't know what they were doing. The online trade in special is not as fast or easy as they claim. Beware of false advertising. We were lied to multiple times and no one in the finance departed showed no due diligence or critical thinking. I will give kudos to the sales manager (forget his name) that made things right for wasting our time and being consistently lied to. Do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. read more

Went to this location to sell my car and possibly buy another. My car is valued between $5k-$8k at CarMax online. They offered $1k saying that my car has "frame damage" that was reported by my insurance company. Called Allstate (to Confirm that their info is erroneou) and they see no indication of frame damage on claims in their system for the car in 20+ years of coverage. Furthermore the Allstate rep said they would've totaled loss the car if there was frame damage. I asked to see the report from CarMax rep and it says nothing about frame damage. Shoppers beware. This is not an ethical business and we are going elsewhere. I gave them 1 star bcuz 0 wasn't an option. read more

I bought a 2023 Honda Odyssey with less than 30 thousand miles and had to return it because, upon inspection by my mechanic, it had a large rat nest under the engine cover and the CV boot was torn. Both of these issues could have been discovered by a routine inspection, which makes me think that their inspection process is a joke. We then returned the vehicle and were told the check would be processed in 10 days. More than three weeks later, we have still not received this substantial amount of money and have had the run around by various staff in their business office. I went to the Carmax on Midlothian to do a trade-in and they told me that my Honda 2015 told that the transmission slipping first they offered me 5000 then they went all the way below 15,000 now I went to my car mechanic today find out nothing is wrong with my transmission so they lied and then had the audacity to just stand there, and look at me when I hear the proof from my mechanic that nothing was wrong with my transmission. I am so disappointed in them. They will not have to worry about me again. read more

I have forgotten the guys name at this point, but the man who sold me my vehicle was absolutely wonderful! He got us in and out of Carmax in less than two hours, and I walked away having sold my old vehicle and driving my new one. He was great The part about this business that sucks is I have called and left six voicemails to try and get my car fixed! I ended up paying an extra $6000 on top of the cost of the car so that I could have Carmax care. I have been trying for a month and a half to reach somebody in the mechanics department to take care of my vehicle. They have not returned my calls and I feel ignored. Your customers should not have to drive the 45 minutes it takes me to get to your facility just to schedule an appointment! The customer service here has been horrid. It would be nice if I could get a refund on my Carmax care that I was hustled into having to pay. read more

This is my 3rd car from Carmax in 10 years and it has gone downhill terribly! There is no 21 point inspection, and the service dept has obviously hired kids with no supervision! I paid to have a vehicle shipped to Carmax, Midlothian. No one reached out to me to schedule a test drive date. I went to the dealership saw the vehicle which clearly hadn't been detailed. The salesperson stated Carmax doesn't really detail vehicles anymore. Clearly, he has not read what Carmax advertise such as 150-point inspection and detailing. They also had only 1 key which they attempt to stick the buyer with the cost $500. I provided my own financing, and it still took nearly 3 hours to finish paperwork, transfer license and a tacky wash job. I would not recommend Carmax after my experience people can do much better. read more

Over the river and thru the woods to CarMax we go.... I had to drive all the way to this location because the location closest to me is pretty bad. I wasn't thrilled about the long drive and was even more discouraged by the parking situation it is awful!! On a typical Saturday you could spend awhile trying to park because it's busy. It's not you're normal kind of busy it's Saturday Morning at the DMV busy, or Black Friday shopping busy it's INSANE!! Thankfully for us we had preordered a car from a sister location in another State and had it delivered so we had an appointment. The car delivery fee was only 99 bucks and allowed us to use that 99 dollars toward another ordering another vehicle if we hated it! I totally hated the car we ordered but ended up falling in love with another car on the lot so it all worked out. Our salesman was laidback and never pressured me. He answered all of my questions and was completely flexible. The car buying process is loud. Everyone is talking at once, with mask on and plexiglass barriers and you can not hear much of anything! However the process moves pretty quickly and efficiently and the team manages to keep safety as a top priority with the barriers, social distancing and constant sanitation. The best part of the experience is the end when you get your car keys! The salesman escorts you to your car and there is a big yellow bow on your car. It's sanitized and sprayed with a nice new car scent! After signing papers and spending so much money that little yellow and the celebratory cheers from my salesman meant the world to me. Overall I enjoyed my experience and would definitely return to buy a car from our wonderful salesman Steve!! read more

I just bought a lightly used Subaru here on Sunday. Overall good experience. I'd been looking at Subaru's and been test driving at the Subaru dealerships but they didn't have exactly what I wanted feature wise in stock for a used vehicle. I found the perfect car features/year/miles ect on carmax and went in to check it out. My dealer was very nice and didn't pressure me. I think I knew more about the car than he did but I'd been researching extensively and he has to know every make/model. Whoever test drove the car last had left the lights on and the battery was dead. They jumped it but just to be safe right after I purchased it they had me drive down the street to an auto parts store and put in a new battery and refunded me (they would have done it but it was Sunday and their people for that were gone). My only issue is the passenger side window control from the drivers seat didn't work. I was in the car about 2 minutes and discovered it. If your in the passenger seat their button works- it's just the driver side control that doesn't. They're gonna fix it no charge of course but I give them 4/5 just for that. Do not take your car here for service. This is the worst service department of any organization I have ever experienced. Not only do they not repair the problems, they create more, that in addition to them not answering the phone or replying to voicemail messages makes this a no-go for me and I suggest you too. It is not trivial, and clearly this is a management issue that has allowed non-responsiveness and inept mechanical service. If you encounter this problem file a complaint with the better business bureau. They will attempt to remedy. read more

Just bought my car last month, and the tire pressure light has repeatedly come on. Went to Discount Tire, who advised me that CarMax had sold me a car with tires that were dry rotted (how'd they pass inspection?). So now I have to go through the process of missing a day from work to make sure CarMax will cover the cost of replacement tires on my vehicle. I was in a bit of a rush to get a new car since my transmission went out in my other car. Inquired online and promptly received a call about my inquiries. While on the call I asked about another car. Got a call the next day from the sales person. The price I was saw online was different from price I was quoted but the were able to honor the price I saw online. While my car was being transferred to my store there was a chip on the windshield. They had it filled but it is not very appealing to leave with your new car and have a quarter sized blob in you line of sight on the windshield. Also had to have the battery replaced there days after getting my car which they took care of. Overall not a bad experience read more

Do Not buy the warranty, it is a bad deal, they don't cover much, they are a total hassle to deal with and they do not pay in a timely way so you can get your car out of the shop, nor do they cover basic things like seat belts not working because they make up some excuse of why it's your fault... that's exactly what happened to me... They will pressure you to buy warranty and they use a disreputable warranty company, that's the problem with Carmax. Their service department is swamped and unhelpful. read more

They promised to call me back to assist, but never called me back and when I reached out to them, they act like I never called I spent in the thousands to solve problems with the car and will never purchase another car from this company. All I can say about my visit here is disappointing. I made an appt online to test drive a car. Parking sucks at this location so I parked on the street and hoofed it to the entrance. This place was PACKED. Yes social distancing was happening but this was more crowded than a Black Friday sale. While I wasn't thrilled I thought well I have an appt so at least I don't have to wait long. I checked in and the guy told me it would be 5-10 mins. WRONG. 45 mins later no one had said a word to me. I got up to leave and a nice gentleman caught me. I told him what happened and he tried to help. The car I had reserved for my test drive (which I put a hold on) was no where to be found. I was offered to test drive a similar car. I know the guy was rushing to try and help me but the inside of the car wasn't clean at all. The car in general was in not great shape for the price it was listed for. Test drove the car and glad I did since I HATED it. Returned the car after my 10-20 min test drive (super short) and told the man thanks for helping but I wasn't a fan of the car and left. Around 9pm that evening someone from CarMax called me. At 9 PM. Nope nope nope. Would NEVER buy a car here. read more

We spent all day at the dealership to pick a truck and while we were test driving it was sold underneath us they had no alternative options and we were told incorrect information from the start very unprofessional and the staff was not helpful in resolving the situation so we left without purchasing a vehicle. I just visited the Midlothian CarMax today and I had a horrible experience with the service center. I was called a liar by Tiffany. I was told I could bring my car to be looked at after I get off work, but when I got there everyone is telling me they won't be able to service my car. Tiffany told me because her and Kate were the only women that worked in the service center, there is no way that either one of them told me that. I asked for the manager and he basically agreed with Tiffany and neither one was apologetic. No one takes accountability for what they do or say. RE: stock # 20063060, 2018 Ford Explorer I was supposed to test drive and purchase the above referenced vehicle. I didn't even bother to drive it. IT IN NO WAY (even the shade of blue was different) resembled the pictures put forth online. The rear cabin area had streaks of who-knows-what on the ceiling and sides (the substance could be chipped off with a fingernail), the exterior had numerous rubs and fine scratches on every body panel. Most of these imperfections can be corrected with a good detailing. One, on the driver side fender actually had an "X" written under it with a crayon. I assume that was a way to mark it for repair. Obviously, pre-inspection of a vehicle only involves wash and vacuum. I was preapproved by Bank of America for 50K. i could have been in the car and gone in less than an hour. Unfortunately, for CARMAX, I was gone in less than a half-hour, no sale. This vehicle was priced above average retail by about 200 bucks. I would expect way better than what was presented. My expectations were not unreasonable. I will never consider CARMAX again. The photos online do not give a true depiction of the vehicles. To me, that is akin to the "bait and switch" practice. I wish I had taken the time to check the VIN. For all I know, the vehicle presented ISN'T the one transferred fRom VA Beach that I requested. Guess we won't know.... read more

Do not buy a vehicle from Carmax and go through what I have gone through. I purchased a used car for over $35,000 and have nothing but problems with Carmax. I still have not even received registration, tags, etc. because CARMAX sold me a vehicle that they didn't even have title on. Now this is all my problem and I am driving a vehicle with expired registration. They have been zero help and even extremely rude about this concern. This has been a horrible company to deal with and I'm to the point I actually had to hire an attorney to help me through this. My 2 week old (to me, bc its used) car got towed off of the side of Chippenham because my tire BLEW while driving to work. Im not fond of internet "bashing" anyone/anything because I feel like there are better ways to get your point across. BUT I HAVE HAD IT with this branch. From the first week i have had this car it has done nothing but have problem after problem after problem. 1.) 10 days after purchasing this car I was pulled over on Hull St. for a broken tail light (mind you, my car had JUST passed inspection as that is required before selling a vehicle) 2.) when the cop came to my window he asked me what car i had before this one.. Because IT WAS STILL REGISTERED TO THAT CAR! (Apparently CarMax doesn't send any paper work to DMV until 15 days after the purchase) which makes NO SENSE because my car had already been paid off on Carmax's books seeing as how I switched lien holders to Virginia Credit Union 2 days after I bought the car! So they should have washed their hands clean of that and given responsibility to VACU. The cop gave me a warning for faulty equipment and improper registration. When I called the business office at Carmax to get this straightened out a woman, whose name i dont remember, answered. I didnt have a feeling of comfort.. I was treated as if I should have known this information already. (PS: No one told me about this ridiculous "15 day" rule while buying the car) There were no apologies for what i had just gone through, and her explanation for the tail light? "Things happen with used cars" UNDERSTANDABLE... HOWEVER ... i haven't even had this car 2 weeks at this point. 3.) My entire radio/dash stopped working Monday (yesterday) morning and when I called the service dept. to schedule an appointment, Michael answered the phone. I voiced my concern about the tail light and registration to him as well, just to make him aware that I was an ALREADY unhappy customer & he was almost the opposite of apologetic! So i just made an appointment at the Carmax on W. Broad because its closer to my job. 4.) THEN THIS HAPPENS THIS MORNING. I called Carmax. Michael answered. I was IN TEARS because I had HAD IT with this car! Its been one thing after another after another for the past 2 weeks! And what does Michael say? "Just call the other Carmax because you already have an appointment with them and see what they can do for you.." So a CUSTOMER in an EMERGENCY SITUATION who is in tears and panicking about how shes going to make it to work was just brushed off to another branch? You turned away business. Is it because i have a warranty and your staff wont get paid as much to fixed ALL of the issues with this car? Management at this location can do/say nothing to me at this point to amend this. This has been the HANDS down most awful experience I have ever had with a company's customer service both from the business office and the service office. KUDOS to the West Broad Branch for caring about my issues and being sincere when it came to your apologies. I will definitely be dealing exclusively with that branch from now on. read more

Horrible experience buying from Carmax Midlothian. Feel like entire experience the salesman handling was dishonest and deceiving. Initially when running our credit, the only finance offer they'd give us was through carmax at an absurd 9% interest. They refused to run it through other lenders and wouldn't even hold the car for one day for us to get approve through our bank. Eventually we were able to get the car we wanted through a more reasonable lender, but still thought we could get a better interest rate through our credit union. We were told if we brought a check within 3 business days, they wouldn't finalize the original loan and would go with the new one. So we did that, only to find out they did finalize the other loan and now we have 2 big car loans and can't get answers from them 2 weeks after purchasing the car. Then to top if all off we specifically asked about the warranty specifics before signing any paperwork. I asked if the mileage covered was from the mileage on the odometer at the time of purchase or when the odometer itself reached that mileage. I was assured by our salesman ben and the trainee with him that it was from the mileage on the purchase date. Well surprise surprise reading through the warranty paperwork and that was a lie too. They are dishonest and manipulative looking to take advantage of people anyway they can, would never recommend them and will never go back. read more

I do not know where to begin with the Midlothian Location. What a horrible experience. First, I started my buying process online and was completely approved. I paid the $99 to have the car shipped from Virginia Beach location to Midlothian- HUGE MISTAKE. These knuckleheads at the Midlothian location tried to fool me into re-applying for the car which I was already approved for. Because I worked out ALL of my documentation with an online agent / sales person, they were trying to get me to re-apply for the car again so they could get their sales staff the business!! All I needed to do was pick the car up and drive off. They kept telling me their local dealerships worked differently than online and in order for me to purchase the vehicle I would have to go through the whole process again. After I declined, I left the dealership and called my sales person back to whom kept telling me everything was in order, I was already approved, and I could just pick up the car for my 24-hour test drive. I decided to go back, and give them one more chance, even though at this point I was LIVID. When I get there, Jay (the manager) tells me he purged my order because I said I was not interested anymore and he can not get the information back / he can not override the system. Which was a HUGE lie because once I got my online sales person on the line (who he started to refuse to take the call) Jay's story changed. He said if there were no clerical mistakes on my information I submitted online then it would not be a problem. If he found one typo he said again I would have to go through the whole process of applying for credit all over again. Remember, they had ALWAYS wanted me to run my credit a second time so their sales person would have rights to selling the vehicle. Just as suspected, they said they could not move further because there was a minor typo on the paper work and I would have to apply for credit ALL OVER AGAIN. Midlothian Carmax is the biggest fraudsters out there. They will lie their way through the process for a sale to that location. PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE!! read more

Negative! I had been searching for the car for months. My friend suggested CarMax big mistake. The reason they suggested it was oh there so many locations and you'll get a wide selection plus they'll transfer the car you want to the Midlothian store. Yeah ok So we search online find the car it's in Georgia make an appointment to see what needs to be done to get the car here. Go to the store for my appointment have the information for the car. Tell the salesperson we're interested how can we get this to Va? Ok so he's on the phone can't find out any information for this particular car it's there in Georgia but someone is driving it no more information on it. He gives me his business card tells us he'll keep calling the location to see what he'll find and let us know, and we can ca him to check in. Later, I call to see if he found out anything. Nothing Next, day call nothing. This goes on for days. Waiting....... He never suggested maybe I'll find you another Challenger in a color style or anything. In my opinion he never worked hard enough to get me this car. After almost 2 weeks he sends me a message about the car. Smdh! Too late!! I found my Challenger at another dealership that didn't take forever plus I didn't have to pay no transfer fee. You can get any car from any state at CarMax but most have a transfer fee. I'm happy it didn't work out because I found something a lot better and I'm loving it read more
