Recently sold my 2017 vehicle to CarMax. I initially went to a different place, days before I went and played around on their online offer an average/ok and a rough condition. The final conclusion from that other business was much lower than the rough condition quote. My car is not in rough condition. So I said ok to that place and drove to CarMax on the same day. CarMax stayed true to their online quote and I was satisfied with that and it was much higher than the previous business had quoted me for. The process probably took 2 hours max for me, since I already got the offer code ahead of time. Make sure you have the important docs- title and registration. They checked the car again and gave me the offer quote on paper this time and was told I have 7 days if I want to take their offer. I was satisfied with CarMax's offer so I gave them the greenlight. Pretty good customer service, just do your research prior to making an appointment and actual test drive. The no haggle and no pressure is real, many of the sales individual that I encountered were very lax. When purchasing a vehicle, just know that their business model is black and white. The salesman are paid hourly + commission therefore they don't push the sale as aggressively as a regular dealership. Maxcare.... I would recommend purchasing it for any and all vehicles they have on the lot. European vehicles cost much more than that of a Japanese vehicle, and that's priced conservatively (you'll need it if you're out of the manufacturer warranty). At the time I am writing this, they have a 90 day warranty with a 30 day no questions asked up to 1500 miles return policy. USE THIS TIME TO COMB THRU THE VEHICLE AND FIND ANY AND ALL MECHANICAL IMPERFECTIONS!! 9/10 chance that they will repair it! 1/10 chance they don't... you have the opportunity to return the vehicle. Had the BEST experience at CarMax. They were efficient, relatively fast and made the process of selling my car so easy. A huge difference that I think is important to note is that they don't require your title (as Carvana does), which was incredibly helpful as mine was lost after moving. They provide the paperwork to transfer the title that goes directly to the DMV. CarMax offered me higher what I found being offered at Carvana, Marketplace, and Craiglist. I purchased my Subaru Outback from CarMax in August of 2024. I chose express pick up and when I arrived at CarMax I notified the front desk I was there for my express pickup and they seated me in the express pickup section. I then sat for over an hour waiting for someone to come speak with me. After 30 minutes of waiting, I notified an employee and they said they'd go figure out what was happening; that employee never returned and I saw them continuing to walk around after speaking with me. I then told another employee at the hour mark and she was very helpful and found out that during staff change, no one notified the incoming staff that I was there. They then quickly got me my car and out the door. Within a day of driving the car I heard an odd chirping noise when driving. I took it in and one of my belts was worn and they replaced it under the warranty. My car then began having issues over the next few months and it was found that the battery in my car was completely too small for my vehicle which was causing my issues and acid was leaking from the battery. My mechanic changed the battery. My car continued to drive rough and my mechanic found that the spark plugs needed to be replaced and one of the coils, after my car completely stopped working and I had to get it towed to the mechanic as I did not feel safe driving it. Since paying over 1k on repairs after purchasing the vehicle, it is finally driving smooth. However today I pulled down the backseat cupholder for the first time and found pink gum stuck to it. I am frustrated with the lack of inspection the vehicle seemed to have prior to selling it. I believe the battery being too small should have been noticed when the vehicle was inspected as well as the worn belt. I understand the coil and spark plugs need to be replaced seeing the car was around 75k miles when I purchased it; but it was extremely frustrating to deal with when I had already been dealing with issues I felt CarMax should have handled prior to selling the car. The car was also clearly not fully cleaned before purchase seeing the gum was stuck to my backseat cupholder. I would personally not purchase from CarMax again. read more

Had an BMW X5 shipped to this store. It took over a week before I was able to test drive. Apparently the iDrive component broke (which is essentially the brain of the car). I received multiple text messages car wasn't ready and was told they were replacing the entire component. A week later I get a text that the car is ready for me to test drive. Within minutes of test driving, I noticed the Sport driving function did not work. My rep, Austin, spoke with his manager, and upon returning to us after parking the car back in the garage, Austin confirmed "none of the buttons were working". Manager told me they would speak to their technicians to find out what happened and let me know and it will likely be ready to test drive again in four days. However, the very next day I get a text from Austin, who said many people are looking at the car online and if I want to reserve the car again that I should and if I wanted to, I could test drive again the next day. I'm so disturbed by this as the car is not market ready and should not be on the availability list at all. This makes me extremely leery of ever purchasing a car at Carmax and can confidently say to potential customers - don't do it without thoroughly looking at the car or have a mechanic look at it before purchasing. I left Carmax and purchased an X5 directly from a BMW dealership instead. read more

Horrible experience. My car broke down and rather than fix it again, I wanted to look into buying a new car instead. I went into carmax with low expectations knowing my situation wasn't great and I wouldn't get much for my trade in and also knowing my credit isn't great right now. I was upfront about everything. I was then baited into a deal, spent two days uploading documents and giving the sales rep my info, given 5 loans to choose from, agreed on one and was given a pickup appointment time. An hour before, a different salesperson calls to rework the arrangement and eventually says they are unable to make the deal. So I wasted a week on this and returned my rental car with nothing. To add further annoyance, I now got a rejection email saying I'm no longer prequalified due to "hard inquiries on credit report" which were caused by carmax. I wasn't planning on working with them ever again anyway but how rude and ridiculous. read more

The purchase process, in hindsight, was comical but at the time was infuriating. I arranged for an "express pickup" that took 3 separate visits and over 6 hours in total. We've called the service department at least 10 times over the last year and, no exaggeration, no one has ever answered and no one has ever called me back. Not one time! Jeff at the front was the rudest person I have encountered in customer service in a very long time. Easily the worst car shopping experience of my life. Called at 3:18pm to make an appointment to test drive a car we saw on the lot earlier that day and made an appointment for 4pm. Arrived around 3:30 and checked in, were told we would receive a phone call when someone was available and that it was possible someone would be available earlier than 4. Around 3:40, a text came in saying something along the lines of "sorry we missed you- we attempted to call you". We walked to the front desk and said we weren't sure why we received the text, as we never received a call. Jeff spoke over the top of us, and said "someone called you and you didn't answer". We replied "there is no missed call and we were sitting inside of the building - you can see the call log" and showed him the phone. He sees the outgoing all at 3:18 and says "no, see, we called you at 3:18". I let him know that no, that is an OUTBOUND call and was when we called to set the appointment, before we arrived. He continued to argue that someone called us and we missed our window. He then asked what we wanted to do now. Um, test drive the car we came in to test drive? Nothing changed on our end, we're just trying to do what we set out to do. He then spoke poorly to us because we did not scan the QR code on the vehicle to see if it was available. I had the stock # and provided that. There was no apology for the call error, no accountability, and no desire to help. After this exchange, the vehicle wasn't even worth it. We walked away so that I could bite my tongue and not stoop to his level, but with a very bitter taste in our mouths from Jeff. Due to this incredibly disrespectful individual, I will never return to this CarMax- even if the cars somehow become free. Jeff needs to be reminded that he is in sales so customers pay his salary... and then he needs to be fired. read more

Completely wowed with my entire experience. I have credit around 580 and it's steadily climbing. What would really help is a car loan. I quit painting so I sold my truck for something I can afford that was gas efficient. Step 1. I found the vehicle I wanted online. It was a few hours away. Their payment estimator seemed like bs. I thought it was to suck me in, only to get an egregious APR %. I went ahead and let them run my credit for that vehicle and I got 10% lower APR than 2 dealerships. They shipped the car here for free. Step 2. The vehicle arrived 4 days early. I was called to come in and check it out. I got there and was helped by Ryan T. He was all smiles , energetic and enthusiastic. Super polite guy! I checked the vehicle out and decided I wanted it. He had me in and out in 40 minutes. I was amazed! Even the guy who processed my down payment was really cool and polite. The work culture seems upbeat positive and friendly. They cary that energy over to their customer service and us clients. I'll probably do more business with these guys in the future. It didn't feel like I bought a car. It felt laid back and seemless. No bs, no annoying salesmen. He didn't even pressure me to buy the maxcare. He explained it and I initially refused. He asked my concerns with purchasing it. He educated me and reassured me. I wound up getting it. Did the online quote and then scheduled an appointment after uploading all the documents needed for my dad's Infiniti. Got there for our appointment. Took less than 30 minutes then they gave us the check for the amount they quoted at (which was 2k more than carava) and $3.5k more than the other dealers! Great customer service and efficiency. Had a terrible experience here brought my car in to be appraised it's a 2020 Hyundai accent it had been hit in the front and had brand new parts put in and had zero issues at all but after I had it appraised they had broken my hood latch by pulling it to hard and messing up something with the cable under the hood which mind you had no previous issue at all it had always workered perfectly fine and didn't have damage to it but regardless of that they refuse to take responsibility for messing my car up and we're insisting that it was already about to break or something when all parts there are new and were installed professionally. I recently had need to purchase another car and, as most of us would probably agree, most car dealers make what should be a pleasant and fun experience into one that is tedious and even sometimes devious, if not insulting. Hoping to avoid that this time, I considered buying from a number of alternative sources finally arriving at CarMax in Kearny Mesa. Not being familiar with the CarMax version of auto buying, I was somewhat apprehensive. Fortunately the sales representative who was assigned to me, Kevin, turned out to be excellent. From the first five minutes of our meeting, through a review of CarMax procedures, options for purchasing and insurance, test drives, etc., Kevin was absolutely the finest no-pressure, supportive, and informative car salesman I've ever encountered! He has been incredibly helpful and friendly and has been a pleasure to work with on buying another car. And having now purchased somewhere ~10-15 cars, I've never even considered saying this about any of the salespeople with whom I worked. If you're in the market for another car, I strongly recommend you consider CarMax - lots of options for purchase and no-pressure to buy. Honestly I had a really positive experience with the CarMax team, I called ahead and made all of my appointments. I definitely wouldn't recommend doing a walk in because it seems like they're always busy. I was helped by Leo, he was very helpful and answered all of my questions with my vehicle. He is very knowledgeable about the whole Carmax business model & process and I felt like I could go to him with any questions and concerns. He was also very patient with me! The process is straight forward, the only downside was the paperwork and there was a little bit of back and forth on a few things, took a little longer than I expected. Other than that I had a good experience here, I really like my new car. My advice is to take advantage of their 10 day return window and go get your car looked at by an independent mechanic if you have any doubt about the car, just to make sure you cover all your bases! Do your own research, buy a carfax report, and take your car to get looked at for a second opinion. Worst that can happen is you return the car back and get all your money back. read more

Recently had a car shipped to the Kearny Mesa CarMax from Texas off their website. The ordering process was simple and the car arrived sooner than expected. I was able to test drive the car and trade in my old car for the new one within just a couple hours. The price was reasonable compared to the rest of the market. The car was clean and in excellent condition. Overall a very smooth and convenient process. My only recommendation is if you choose to finance through an institution other than CarMax, make sure your loan application is approved BEFORE going in. After purchasing a car from CarMax, you only have 3 business days to change your lender without hassle, otherwise you have to finance through CarMax, then go through a refinancing process after. Not a huge deal either way, but it just would made things easier. read more

Trying to sell family car while we are here from out of town. Was quoted $20600 in November. Got here to execute in December on car sale. I get that it was pending inspection, and I get that the offer expired. I believe inspection showed that car was as stated. But when we arrived we were offered 14k. When I questioned why such a big difference from our November quote, rep responded that he'd go up to 16k but that was his final offer. He couldn't offer any explanation for the discrepancy. We wasted time thinking carmax would come in somewhere close to online offer. I'd be okay if we were offered a good reason why the big change but we could not get any reason at all. Very easy buying process. No pressure which I love. Had the Murano shipped down from OC and was there ready for my test drive. Drove in and they appraised my 2020 Pathfinder and gave me 3000.00 over what Kearny Nissan was going to give me. I knew Nissan under bid me so I was happy. Found my Murano Platinum and I love it. Only issue is they're having problems with the registration so we'll see how that goes. I drove off Xmas Eve and still no plates. We'll see. ‍I will post if any further issues arise. read more

My husband and I have bought our 4th and last car at Carmax. Almost three weeks into our new car, we had to take it back after a week as it would not start. The entire service department needs to be more competent. Nothing but excuses with our service advisor being out sick, then another person promising last Friday, 6.26.23, they would have our car taken to the Toyota dealership in Kearny Mesa to assess further. Mind you, and during this time, they have had a car for more than a week simple battery test was not done. Toyota informed us today the battery had a damaged cell. Carmax will replace the cost at 600.00 for this. However, they refuse to give us the same guarantee of 84 months that Toyota would and only offer 12,300 miles. This whole process has been egregious. So, If the batter taps out after 12,300, we are on the hook for the cost minus our deductible. The service manager refuses to take my calls. I make 54.00 per hour. Is Carmax going to refund my extra time? It's too bad they are losing a customer as they are returning the car. Do not go here! The sales staff are excellent, but service is a nightmare, not worth experiencing the aggravation and stress. read more

I wanted a 4Runner for the last couple of years and took my time in making my purchase. I was on the Carmax website almost daily for months. I eventually settled on the type I wanted and decided I would purchase the next available that had everything I wanted. Low and behold, one came available and I initiated the buying process online. It's worth mentioning that I did the 24 hour test drive, twice before making my decision and both times, Carmax was great to work with. Financing: I am self employed and it's difficult to prove my income. I applied wtih my bank and with the last financg company I used last time - both turned me down. I immeidately applied for financing with Carmax and was approved without havning to provide ANY income documentation. That was a huge plus. The rate SUCKS, but they got it done, so I'll just refinance after a few months. The Purchase: Easier than I could have ever imagined. I uploaded my insurance docs, proof of identity and scheduled the pick for the next day. Was in and out within 40 minutes AND my sales rep was awesome. A kid in a wheelchair - I forget his name but he was great. First Bummer: The car wash. My car was immaculate when I picked it up. Not a visible scratch on it. After two weeks, we'd had some rain and the car being black, showed every spec of dust on it, so I took it to a brushless car-wash. MAN WAS I SHOCKED. There were scracthes ALL OVER IT. Nothing major, just little scratches here and there, but there are plenty of them. But washing it removed whatever cosmetic fix-up they did. Bummed. Second Bummer: We took a drive to Joshua Tree and AirBnB'd it for a couple days. Backing down the steep driveway and putting the car into drive, the traction control light lit up and the car wouldn't shift into gear. I put it in park, then drive and it was fine. I repeated this two or three times just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It repeated the same slip all 3 times. This and a strange popping sound when I drive. So I scheduled service. This is 3 weeks after I purchased the vehicle, so still within the 30 day return window. Third Bummer: Service: I called to schedule service and low and behold, they couldn't get me in until 1 day AFTER my 30 days. My fault for not being adamant about getting in, but SUPER suspect. I have yet to hear back about the diagnosis, but my service rep has been helpful. SO SHADY THOUGH Fourth Bummer: The Loaner: They proivded me with a loaner, which I appreciate. It's a zippy little Nissan. The car smelled odd when I first got in, almost like someone had been smuggling large quantities of weed - it stank. After the weed smell went away, the true culprit appeard: CIGARETTE SMOKE. The loaner is FILTHY, smells like cigarettes AND A WATER BOTTLE FULL OF PISS ROLLED OUT FROM UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT THIS MORNING. WTH??? Needless to say, I've had a mixed experience with this crew. They're obviously super busy and looks like the sacrifice great service in order to get more sales. It's a sales drivin organization, so I get it, but service should be paramount because I'm not sure I'll buy from this location again. read more

We knew going in what to expect. We wanted to see how much we could get our car appraised for. We agreed if the price was slightly lower than our bottom line we would sell. Just for the convenience of it all. We didn't have an appointment just walked in and got a sales consultant right away. Took about 30-45 minutes start to finish. Got the 7 day appraisal it was about $2800 less than we wanted. We walked. They said it had engine noise which was the reason why the online appraisal did not match. But we've been driving it and there was no noise. I am not mad I know the business. Just go in knowing you'll be low balled and how much you are willing to budge or not budge on the price. Either it will go to auction or on their lot for double the price. Cost of doing business I guess. We ended up selling it private party a week later for full asking to a great person that will love the car as much as we did. Simple process. read more

He walked me through all the process of brainstorming what Type of Car I want that will suit my busy lifestyle. He also gave a good business both ways for the company and customer through the Max Care that I would normally not consider for not wanting to pay another fee but he has shown me the benefits in the long run. Chris will be my go-to-guy for any of my concerns with my new Toyota Corolla Hybrid coz I trust him and I know he has my best interest in mind without compromising company policies. I am a happy customer coz this location seems to have nice personnel namely: Ivan Nietro who went out of his way to help me with my car, patiently installed my new car plate and even set up my Car Audio Play. Tonight my partner made the hard choice to sell a car he loved in order to forward our long term goals. Unfortunately, the experience we had at Carmax changed from a feeling of moving in a positive direction to a feeling of participating as low hanging fruit available to be exploited by Carmax's team. We arrived 30 minutes early for our 1800 appointment, and then were told that we should go to dinner and wait to be called when Carmax was ready to move forward with an offer. We were told that the estimated offer given online would likely be the offer made, but that if we were lucky we would get a few hundred dollars more. We walked to dinner, and after not having gotten a call at almost 1900, we went back to the business office to follow up. My partner was told by the front desk that his original offer was matched, and was asked to wait in line. After waiting he was then told his offer had then dropped by almost $1500. He agreed to move forward, and was never offered a consultation or feedback on how the appraisal had changed. He was quickly bombarded with paperwork to sign at the front desk while customers waited in line behind him. After he was told to take a seat by the team member at the front desk, and after a few minutes a team member from the back called his name. We thought that was when we would get some feedback about the appraisal and offer, but instead a white envelope was handed to him and the team member turned their back to him. My partner made a hard choice today, and we left with an increased feeling of uncertainty and insecurity than when he walked through the front doors of Carmax. I cannot imagine how many other people have left feeling defeated after interacting with this team. I purchased a 2020 dodge charger with only 30,000 miles it said that it needs a oil change recently even thoe i just went a couple months ago to go do a oil change from this car max. I went under to change the oil myself this time and the oil was leaking from the bottom it was not tightened enough the car was leaking since the time i took it to them to change the oil. I highly recommend Carmax to anyone who is buying or selling a vehicle. I have experienced numerous transactions here from my mom and brother purchasing their car or from me selling my car each and every time I've been here the customer service experience has been top tier. all of their employees are happy they are patient. They are non-judge mental. They really take the time to work with you and listen to what you want and expect They go above and beyond and never pressure you to make a purchase you are not comfortable with. I found out that most car dealerships give different amount commission, depending on what kind of car does sales person sells but at Carmax they do not have that policy so therefore every customer is treated equal. they offer max care they fill your tank with gas. They detail the car and put a big yellow bow on top of it when they present it to you at the end which I believe is a very special touch. I had to use three phones to get them the forms they wanted PLUs they ended up taking scans of the docs in person anyway. What a hassle. And then Jeff was like Hilter about the 20 minutes test drive. I have had Carmax for over 5 years, I came in to trade in my Honda for a Subaru. I ordered it to transfer. I got a pre approved loan online, they called the business center and Carmax corporate stated the car was ready to pick up. They treated me like a liar, and would not look at any evidence about my actual and perspective income as a Federally Registered Patent Attorney and CEO of a professional corporation. They lied about loans and refused to run my new Professional Corporation, I was forced to run my loan for myself, when the car is only an asset of the company. I explained all of this, and they only allowed me to run the worst option for me. They lied on my appraisal and have a tongue in cheek class action worthy interior policy to lie in a trade in appraisal to say your engine is malfunctioning. They do this consistently even if your previous car is Carmax. The horrific, ignorant, abusive waste of time Car Max and Victor, Dewit and Jack - all whom pretended I was invisible when I came in the third time to pick up my car with my Mexican mom. He changed his tune when I started speaking Spanish with my mom and he said "oh you two are together" and failed to offer my mom a water. When I said that I am a federal attorney he made a faint attempt to mansplain how loans work and the word "transfer" between an IOLTA to an operating account "is not income" because it says transfer (from a client trust account to a personal account) Victor embarrassed me in public. He has no idea what an IOLTA account is and could not figure out how a lawyer is paid. It of revenge and spite he lied to the bank and loan department to deny me my car. They have no compassion, they block your phone and hand you off as quickly as possible, they rip you off in trade ins, and they disrespect you and try to man-splain when they have no idea what they are talking about, and they commit insurance fraud to maximize profits by framing your income as badly as they possibly can.
