Our family, who lives in the area, suggested Colette's and it was the perfect choice after a pizza lunch. This is a one-of-one locally owned ice cream shop that is spotless and very welcoming. They only offer eight flavors, but I did see a board with select flavors of the month. I went with a cone filled double scoop of salted caramel and vanilla and it was delicious! As corny as it sounds, you can really taste the difference in the high quality ingredients and the care they put into each batch of ice cream. My wife loved her rocky road and dark chocolate mix and the kids raved about their cups of mint chip, for my son, and cookie monster, for my daughter. My daughter and I loved the ice cream while on vacation! So much so, we wanted to order a hoodie while traveling home as a souvenir. We tried to contact the shop through their instagram account to make the order. Initially, they responded but then stopped replying. I just discovered this place, and I'm a fan. I assumed it was a chain, the aesthetics are very polished, but apparently it's a one-off with aspirations for local expansion. And the ice cream is apparently made on site. I'm dairy-intolerant (sadly), and they had two non-dairy flavors when I visited, vanilla and cherry-something. I had both. Apparently they use oat milk and a pea protein for their non-dairy ice cream. Whatever they're doing, it works. The texture was exceptionally creamy, more industrial than artisanal, but that's not a bad thing, in many respects it's a very good thing. The flavors were also excellent, and again, to my palate a bit less artisanal. In other words, the ice cream reminded me more of exceptionally good commercial ice cream than of local spot Revival, where both the flavors and textures make it more obvious the stuff was made in small batches in the back. And to be clear, this isn't necessarily a negative for Colette's, and in important respects it's actually a positive. As the Terminator famously said, I'll be back. read more

While in Carmel, I asked my waiter at my lunch spot for recommendations as I made my way back to Monterey. He mentioned this ice cream shop so you know I had to try this. After a short drive, I relied on my car GPS which led me to a deli about a block away. I wandered a bit before finding this small shop that faced the movie house across the street. So far, I've tried four different flavors and sampled half a dozen others and I would've been just as happy eating those instead of the four I eventually got. I stopped by this ice cream shop about ten to fifteen minutes before closing because we had just finished dinner at the Spotted Duck next door. I normally avoid going that close to closing, so I felt a little guilty walking in, but the staff could not have been kinder. A young man helped us and was super friendly and conversational while scooping our ice cream. No attitude, no rush, just really polite service even though it was the very end of the night. After we paid, we went to sit outside in the little patio area in front of the shop. Since it was so close to closing, the outdoor lights had already been turned off, so it was pretty dark. The same staff member actually went back and turned on the lights for us so we could sit and enjoy the ice cream instead of eating in the dark. He definitely did not have to do that and I really appreciated the thoughtfulness. While we were outside, another couple came in even closer to closing time and they still served them without any issue. For how late it was, the staff handled everything with so much patience. It made the whole experience feel really welcoming. My boyfriend was the one who actually had the ice cream and he liked it. I asked about non dairy options and they do have two sorbets even though they are not on display. Good thing to know if you need something dairy free or vegan. The scoops are big and the ice cream is good, just keep in mind that you are in Pacific Grove so you are paying Pacific Grove prices. This evening was our first visit to Colette's Ice Cream. It was delicious! My husband and I both got double scoops in a cup. He had Rocky Road and Cookie Monster. I had Salted Caramel and Over the Rainbow. All of the flavors were creamy and rich in flavor. Much better than Tillamook ice cream served a a nearby competitor. The location is stylish and immaculate. The service was efficient and friendly. I would have posted a few pics, but the ice cream was soooo good, I forgot to take photos of it before eating it!! Fast and super-friendly service, I got a Double with Mint Chip on the bottom and Chocolate Cookie Crunch (chocolate w/Oreos) on top. Seemed quite precarious! (Careful if you're trying to take a picture of your cone by yourself. ) But the caution is rewarded with deliciousness! The chocolate was chocolatey and the mint was minty. I grabbed the open table outside and enjoyed my treat on a partly cloudy and slightly breezy afternoon. My only complaint was that it felt a bit pricey for two scoops and a waffle cone. ($10-12). Could I get more ice cream for less in a pint of Ben & Jerry's? Yes. But I'm on the go and don't want a whole pint. It certainly tasted like high quality ice cream though. The "Single Double" (or "Double Single"?) -- basically two half scoops so you can still split flavors without having to pay for two full scoops -- might be the way to go next time. I love this new ice cream spot! The owner who we were fortunate enough to meet one of the owners on our first visit was so warm, kind, and genuinely helpful along with the rest of the staff... It's one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back again and again. Also, no long line or wait times. I'm obsessed with the fact that they offer pastries alongside the ice cream. It's such a fun touch and makes it easy to find something for everyone. So far, I've tried the cereal milk, cookie monster, and Biscoff flavors. The Biscoff is definitely my top pick--super delicious, just a bit on the sweeter side. The cookie monster wasn't my favorite, mostly because the mix-ins had a unique flavor that didn't quite click for me.
