Lucky for me i was able to visit months apart but also hours apart. I saw who runs it at night, and day. It is a family! Second, their tools! The owner is very friendly. Samples are available when we waited for our order to go, including a bunch of the kebabs (the lamb are better than the chicken). The falafel is crisp, and the hummus is cool and has a nice set of fresh chickpeas on the top with chili. Their platters are large enough for two meals, although the sandwiches, like Ian said, are a bit expensive for just the sandwich. The first time i ever had Shawarma was in 1977. I was 13 years old and i was in Israel. It was so good that at age 53 i still remember it. Fast forward 40 years to today! This very afternoon i had a "Ratatouille" moment at Carmel Haifa. I ordered the Haifa Shawarma that was Veal, Lamb and two Falafel with lettuce, onion, pickles, tahini, and Harissa. When i bit into that sandwich it's like the world stood still! The meat was tender and the edges made crispy. The falafel were aromatic The lettuce,and onions were cool and crispy, a great contrast to the warm meat and falafel. The tahini and the Harissa were the icing on the cake. I also took heed to the handwritten sign on the door boasting the best soup I'll ever eat and ordered the Cream of Mushroom soup. Delicious and ladened with garlic, it was almost a cream of garlic soup with Mushrooms. Much to my delight, it really was some of the best soup I've ever eaten, certainly the best Cream of Mushroom Soup I've ever had. So i want to be clear that this is a Mom and Pop owned falafel/Shawarma Shop in small storefront with 5 tables on Speedwell ave, the food deserves to be put on a pedestal and described in the same way I'd describe any fine dining cuisine. I will make this my goto lunch spot whenever i find myself near Morristown in fact i just might plan my day around a visit to Carmel Haifa and i suggest you do the same. read more

so tonight was my first time trying out food from here. I must say it was delicious! I got the chicken shawarma platter with a side of falafel and baklava. I called at 8:45pm to order take out, which was cutting it close to closing but they were very nice about it. When I got there the guy at the front was super friendly and very helpful! He made suggestions on what I should try next time and gave me extra garlic butter and tahini sauce which was EXCELLENT. Big fan. I've lived in Morristown for over five years now but only recently visited Carmel Haifa, and I'm sad I didn't do it sooner. The outside is unassuming and honestly, I've always cruised by it and thought not much of it. But it was recommended to me and I figured I'd give it a try. The chicken shwarma and kebob are unreal - perfectly cooked and seasoned and the portion is huge. 10/10 hummus and pita, too. My husband also loved the falafel and the marina bread (but the bread is a little too spicy for me!). During the nicer months there's outdoor seating, but the inside is pretty small so I would not recommend for parties bigger than 2. Definitely set up to be more of a take-out restaurant, but I'm so happy I gave this place a shot. read more

The name Carmel Haifa did not even register in my mind when I ordered food from this place. I was just looking to try another Mediterranean restaurant. I ordered the chicken kebab platter with french fries and the vegetarian platter. This is some of the best Mediterranean food I have ever had. The shish kebab was marinated and grilled perfectly. The falafel's had incredible flavor and the side dishes were amazing. While eating the meal I said to my daughter that this food tasted like the food I had in Israel and in New York City. We have tried Carmel Haifa for many years and never had a bad experience/meal. This is by far the best mediterranean food in the area, with an excellent value for money. What a terrible disappointment when I got home with my vegetarian platter. The falafels were not freshly made, so their temperature was luke warm. Not hot the way they are when freshly fried. This ruined the dinner. And this is the second time this happened. The exact thing happened once before and the next time in I let them know about it. He made it up to me by giving me extra falafels which was a favor that made no sense because it was too many to eat. While we're at it, what's with the supplies piled high on the counter so that it forms a barricade that you can't see over? What is being hidden? Please do better! read more

We decided to try this place after seeing the reviews. We came on a very busy Friday night with people waiting and phones ringing off the hook. The staff were hard at work, hustling hard and yet being friendly and managing the chaos seemingly well. We didn't wait too long for our food. It is with a heavy heart that I give this place 2 stars and that is solely based on the food. I really expected more with the hoards of people and the high reviews. I was expecting meat that's shaved from a large pit but instead it was some meat tossed in a fry pan. The meat was dry and the spices were just too much (not in a good way), probably because of this reheating process. The dressing on the salad was bland and the salad itself was just lettuce. I'm used to having a Mediterranean salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions... very disappointing. The side sauces were also lackluster with not much flavor or spice. The one great part of the meal was these little pita triangles they give with spicy sauce (which was actually spicy) with grilled onions inside. It was the superstar of the meal and something I've never come across in all the Turkish restaurants I'd eaten in. We found this place through Yelp reviews as we drove from Pennsylvania to New England. The restaurant is extremely small - it only sits about 8 total, but man, is it worth the stop! What it doesn't have in size, it more than makes up in quality of food, value and friendliness. Everyone here is so kind, helpful and enthusiastic. Although there wasn't a kids meal, our two children split the chicken kabob platter and they loved it. My husband and I had grape leaves (delicious!), the lamb schwarma and baklava. This place is so delicious! We got 2 sandwiches: the Chicken Shawarma and Shawarma Haifa with Veal & Lamb. We were surprised by how different they were. Both were good, but we'd definitely come back for the Shawarma Haifa - lots of tahini, extremely flavorful, good quality ingredients. Look. I'm from Detroit. Over 30 years. That Detroit -- the one that has the highest Middle Eastern population outside of the Middle East. You can't swing your arms in Metro Detroit without knocking over a bowl of tabbouleh. I've eaten kebobs and kibbeh and fattoush and hummus my entire life. I'm bothering to tell you this to lend a little bit of weight to my next statement. Carmel Haifa makes the best falafel I have ever had in my life. By miles. And the rest of the menu isn't far behind. Falafel is so easy to get wrong. Good falafel has dozens, sometimes a hundred ingredients -- it's really hard to get the flavor right, and as a result a lot of it is bland, or unbalanced. And even if you luck out with a recipe, the fry is easy to screw up too. It's all too often spongy and soft all the way through. Truly great falafel (and Carmel Haifa's falafel is, when it's right, perfect) is crispy and dark on the outside, and fluffy on the inside, but still with some tooth. Getting those two things right is hard. And rare, in my experience. The oversized gerbil droppings they sell off of carts in the street are falafel in fraudulent name only. Carmel Haifa has the real stuff. The hardcore stuff. They even get the tahini just right. It complements the flavors of the falafel (and the sandwiches, incidentally), but doesn't overwhelm it in any way. This is a family run place, in the purest sense. From what I can gather, Dad and Mom are around in the morning, prepping everything for the day. The young guys work the counter. The food they turn out is of the quality you always hope for from such an arrangement, but seldom get. Kebobs and kaftas are all cooked over an open charcoal pit with a desk fan stoking the chunks of Royal Oak. It's hard for me to overstate how gratifying the flavor this process imparts onto the meat is. The lamb is irresistible as a result, and I have a hard time ordering anything other than the lamb kebob sandwich, even though everything I have had has been exceptionally delicious. I can laud, unequivocally, the following: shawarma (both chicken and lamb are good alone, but do yourself a favor and try the combination), lamb kebob, shish tawook, shish kafta, grape leaves and their awesome baklava. The hummus, while a bit thinner than I grew up with, has a wonderful flavor as well. I always hated baba ganoush growing up, but I tried Carmel Haifa's when my girlfriend ordered it, and have to say that it was pretty tasty as well. They've recently started offering soups, which I haven't yet tried, but am confident will be equally awesome. Take it from a guy that grew up eating shish kebob like people in this region grew up eating sausage and peppers -- this place is absolutely, positively the real deal. Don't let the tiny storefront deter you. And if you've never tried Lebanese / Middle Eastern cuisine, this place is a can't-miss starting point. They're not serving anything weird like tongue or brain, the prices are downright cheap for the generous portions you're given ($1 for 3 falafel? Seriously?), the service is friendly and competent, and -- this is huge -- these guys really care about the food they're serving you. And it shows. The last thing we expected, moving from Detroit to Jersey, was to find truly great Middle Eastern food. After something like 75 trips to Carmel Haifa over the past 6 months, I'm happy to report we were wrong. Just writing this has my mouth watering. Time for some lamb. read more
