Was visiting family in Reno and was told the best authentic Mexican food is at Carmelita's Taqueria in Golden Valley. Located in a shopping center next to Ramey's supermarket, Carmelita's Taqueria delivers the best menudo in town and also serves some of the best scratch chilaquiles you will ever find. We visited on a Saturday morning and was able to find seating for our family. The menu's diverse selection covers the traditional items you expect but if you want to experience more variety, you have those options as well. Carmelita's delivers generous portions with reasonable prices. I must say everything is handmade and easily full of delicious flavors and also salsas to meet any pallet. We tried the menudo, pozzole, chilaquiles and other dishes and all were perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious. Again, best menudo and the garnishments provided were all fresh to include homemade tortillas. Restaurant was very clean and service was excellent. They can accommodate large groups but be mindful this place is very popular. Carmelita's Taqueria is highly recommended. I do expect to visit several more times before heading back home. I came in during the week for a quick lunch with my son. It was a bit busy so I understand the wait but I had also asked for a high chair and was told they did have them but the lady didn't further assist and at least let me know where to grab them from so I had to wait and ask again. I also had to grab the high chair myself (I'm pregnant) while carrying my toddler and the high chair. Other than that, the food was great! I had the menudo and my son had the chicken tenders with fries. I like how crispy the fries and chicken were and the menudo was very flavorful and rich in broth. You can get half an order of menudo or a full order and i definitely could have done with half an order. The full order is worth the price for the portion size and the dish comes with freshly made tortillas. I highly recommend trying this place if you're in the area and hungry. I happened upon this restaurant while thrifting around Reno/Sparks. I had two carne asada tacos a la carte and they gave me chips and salsa with it! Their chip salsa is spiced so well that I couldn't get enough of it. And their green salsa served with the tacos has a great amount of lime; super tasty! The asada wasn't seasoned, but it was cooked very well and tasty still even though I prefer it seasoned. The servers and staff were super friendly and they all seemed to really love working together. The inside is very clean and comfy. I think next time I come I'm going to try the chipotle burrito. It looks sooooo good read more

So hubby took me out for a late lunch and of course I wanted to come here, my favorite place for Mexican food. I ordered the Monday special, the 3 chicken enchiladas with rice, beans and a salad. Service was great as always and while we waited for our meal, we enjoyed chips and salsa. Flat screen TV's were on, different stations. I took half my meal home as usual, and when I asked for a box, I decided to get a container of 4 pineapple empanadas, freshly made! We visited for the first time today on a recommendation from a fellow food lover. It's in Golden Valley, which is a bit of a drive for us, but if the experience is good the drive would be worth it. It was a Sunday afternoon and the might have previously had a rush, but most of the tables weren't really wiped and there was trash and debris on the floor. Keeping the dining area clean should be a regular duty because I always think if the front isn't clean how is the cleanliness in the back and on food prep? We ordered a Quesabirria ala carte taco (that was recommended), 3 enchilada combo plate, flauta combo plate, side guacamole and a michelada. It came with complimentary chips and salsa-chips were thick, hard and cold so we didn't eat those. The michelada was good and the guacamole was also. I ordered carne asada for the flautas and they were good but had some really hard pieces like cartilage or gristle. My husband loved the enchiladas and rice and beans. The biggest disappointment was the Quesabirria taco-it was just off. The dip tasted old-I only had one bite and didn't eat the rest. I absolutely love this place. There hasn't been anything I've eaten here I didn't like. Please check them out if you're in the area! They also have a tummy "sweet treat" shop right next door. This used to be a regular sit down Diner a few years ago, now it's a Mexican restaurant where you order and pay at the counter, and when it's ready, someone brings your order to your table. Pretty efficient system that actually works pretty well. This was the day after Christmas, and there were a lot of people sitting at the many tables enjoying fare from a fairly large menu. We enjoyed complimentary chips and salsa while we waited. We didn't have to wait long, service was very fast.My wife's steak burrito was huge , with a generous portion of tender sirloin. My Chile Relleno was hot and delicious. The establishment is bright and cheerful with quite a few big screen tvs. We will be back soon to try some of the other menu options. read more

The food is pretty good, but I have to say it, the tortillas are not. They for sure do not make tortillas in house. They taste hard and reheated and Rivas and Roberto's have much better, softer tortillas. As someone who takes much pride from the tortillas to the salsa, these tortillas are not it, which ruins the whole burrito for me. read more

Carmelitas is a hidden gem. Kind of a far drive for me, but a necessary one. Honestly worth the drive. Homemade tortillas, pretty good menudo, carne in rojo is soft and flavorful. Pozole was aight, could use more flavor. I do like how they give you chips for while your waiting. Al pastor tacos were bomb, carnitas were more on the dry side but the flavor was there. Great selection of salsa to choose from. I wish that will build one in south Reno but only time will tell. Overall great Mexican food. read more

Husband and I wanted to try something different and decided on here. When you walk in you go to counter and order your food and pay, then pick a table to sit at. I wasn't sure what I wanted and asked asked the lady what she recommended between enchiladas and carne asada plate. I went with enchiladas, 2 beef and 1 chorizo. The chorizo was my favorite of the 2. The beans were maybe Tom temperature of even and was a little bland. Spanish rice I felt was good. They do not have a fountain soda machine only bottled drinks and beer. Not sure if they offer water as we were not offered. She did ask if we wanted chips and salsa which we said yes. I hit 18% and then I noticed on my account the amount changed to a $10 flat tip on a $21 TO GO order. They would have to put "custom amount" which I did not do. My ala carte chili relleno ($4) made a nice light meal at a very reasonable price. My husbans huevos rancheros ($10) are very different from traditional. This recipe must be from a different part of Mexico. He said they are VERY good. The people are friendly. It's cute inside. So why only 3 stars? EXCEPT For my chili relleno the prices seem a tad high for the QUANTITY of food. Probably not by others standards but I'm a bargain hunter. The salsas are not chunky. And there are no veggies in my relleno sauce. More blender made. It's tasty but I really love relleno sauce full of onions and mild peppers. The chips were nothing special. I started at 3 stars but when I asked my husband how his huevos rancheros compared to traditional he said he thinks these are BETTER! So I bumped it a star up to 4. But wait... We ordered flan and cheesecake. My flan was ok but not sweet enough to satisfy me. And a tad more towards the rubbery texture instead of silky. The cheesecake was also not very sweet and it was quite dry. So I'm afraid this tips the scale back to 3 stars. This is only our first time here. It's $8 for a vegetarian burrito so I'm not sure how soon we will be back! I usually judge a Mexican restaurant based on my first Relleno. I wouldn't order one here again because it didn't dazzle me. This restaurant was delish and the woman was so nice and helpful. A couple of us got enchiladas one with green sauce and one with red. We ate our plates clean. Loved it. First went 2018 A burrito was $9.99. Now 14.99 and they charge you a dollar if you want xtra green sauce. We would order once a week $30.00 or more tip 20% So average per year $1800.00 dollars.
