We just finished our first of many meals at the Carnation Cafe. I had bacon wrapped prawns and have to say that each part of the dish, prawns, rice, green beans and cabbage, was an individual flavor experience, and cooked to perfection. My date had ribeye steak which was cooked exactly as ordered and fork tender. I stopped counting the times he said "[Darn]! that was good". Thank you Chef Don. We'll see you soon! read more

We are a local customer who live close by and love the new café yet so far. The staff is friendly and the chef is well trained. We call him the "sauce guy" due to his sauces are amazing! Each are made from scratch along with all the items on the menu. Just to name a few of our favorites are the Halibut cheeks with this amazing lemon garlic butter sauce and the chicken marsala is delicious. Do start with the fried cheese nuggets with this homemade marinara sauce. Every plate has been served hot and fresh! Leave room for dessert or take it home. They have a beautiful case full of cream puffs and other homemade pastries, which all are amazing. We have gone to their wonderful Sunday brunch offered on certain holidays too. Good price for all the food! We visit the café at least 1-2 times a week. I hope they are here to stay. read more

I'm late in posting this but felt the need to share my experience. We, a party of nine, came here for the first time for Easter brunch. I promised my son a particular dish was here (I didn't confirm with the restaurant- just assumed) and he was severely disappointed when it was on the buffet line. A picky eater, he wouldn't eat anything else. We apologized to our waitress but asked if anything could be done (it was an easy dish). I was shocked when the chef agreed to it on such a busy day with a set menu and even kindly delivered my son's special request to him. He was very nice and didn't seem the least bit annoyed by us. Regarding the food, I though it was all very tasty, especially for a buffet. It's one the better buffets I've been to. My favorite were these delicious little French toast and crepe pieces. So good! We came for breakfast and it was FANTASTIC! Service was A+, food was A+...even the coffee was shockingly good. My fiance had the waygu beef meatloaf and eggs and I had the florentine eggs benny and man were we happy campers. Great experience and great food. We'll be back ASAP to try out dinner. read more

Came here for brunch today. Not too shabby. I had the biscuits and gravy, pretty darn good. Just the right amount of spicy. My only major complaint here is the kids chocolate chip pancakes came with a TON of chocolate syrup on top. It's bad enough I'm giving in to chocolate chip pancakes, but it is completely unnecessary to drown them in chocolate sauce. It made them gross. My kids couldn't even eat them. And there was no ice in the water.... So that was a little weird too. read more

We had dinner for the first time at Carnation Cafe tonight. The Carnation Cafe is in the old Bank of America bank on the main street of Carnation. Seems a little odd when you think about it, but they've done a great job of transforming it into a very nice neighborhood cafe. My husband ordered the halibut special and was very happy. I had the chicken marsala and it was delicious. We shared the chocolate ganache cake that was served with a chocolate dipped strawberry and a berry sauce. Very good! Service was great too. Amazing. Seriously amazing. This place is a gem of the east side. My wife and I have been dining here over the past couple years and we have NEVER HAD A LESS THAN AWESOME DISH here. The soups will make you close your eyes, the better to savor them. The clam chowder is the absolute best I have ever had. The other evening I had a bacon wrapped filet that rivals Ruth's Chris Steak House. Juicy and cooked to perfection. Everything, and I mean everything, is expertly prepared. I'm firmly convinced that if this chef can't do something extremely well, it does not get on the menu. Service is very nice, the food is amazing and the chef loves to cook. I mean he REALLY loves what he's doing and it shows in the food. I wish there were more stars because this place is my favorite. Okay, enough superlatives and here's the details. The chef has an east coast/Italian background and the dishes served here reflect that. Deserts tend to be sweeter than I personally care for and that is very much in the Italian tradition, so not really a criticism. The exterior of the café is nice, but modest as is the interior. Comfortable and attractive, but unassuming. A relaxed place where blue jeans are the norm. Service is among the best I've ever had, but not presumptuous or intrusive. This all is a bit of a mask when it comes to the food. The food is the equal of any place I've ever dined and the superior of most. Come prepared for a great meal. Leave in love with the place. You may even want to get territorial and keep other people away. I recommend dining here at your earliest opportunity. Otherwise you'll be wasting the rest of your dining life when you could have been eating there. read more

We already love dining at the Carnation Cafe so when my husband asked me where I'd like him to pick us up take out for my birthday I immediately said Carnation Cafe! I called and asked if they were serving their delicious Halibut with Caper sauce. They were! I laughingly told the chef it was my birthday and guess what? Visited for dinner last night with my parents and my 3 young boys. Fantastic, friendly service, cozy atmosphere and amazing food! All the desserts are made in house, bread made daily, too. My family: 6 of us (myself, wife, and 4 children (9, 9, 11, 14)) Service: my complaint here is that the wait staff should always inform you when fountain style drink refills are not free. This is especially true when they ask a small child directly if they want more. The food. I had the Shrimp and Avocado salad; the shrimp was over seasoned and there were too few actual shrimp. As a matter of fact I had what appeared to be two entire avocado and only about 10 small bay shrimp. My wife had the Cafe Cobb, which she said was average. For reference no one cleared their plate (not even my 14 year old son who normally finished his meal) 3 out of 4 of the deserts were small, the éclair was medium sized. We again didn't finish any of them. I myself didn't have any, but my kids thought they were just okay. My wife indicated the Tiramisu at Tutta Bella was considerably better. Price: The appetizers were pricy, as were the deserts. I thought the main courses were a little expensive for Happy Hour in Carnation. I was a little shocked at $7 for two small glasses of cranberry juice, same for orange juice; really $3.5 for maybe 6 to 8 ounces of store-bought juice? $138 (+ tip) for a below average meal, DURING happy hour, in a Denny's like atmosphere isn't going to bring us back. read more

About 14 other people at tables, at various stages of restaurant experience - eating meal, waiting for meal, talking after meal. Two wait staff (that were seen), one line cook. Order was taken about 10 minutes after being seated. Simple order for a party of two - fried eggs sunny, and a cheese omelet. Took another 20 minutes to get the food, even though every table except one had been served their meals. Cheese in omelet was not melted and hashbrowns not crispy (and can't rate the toast since toast is a SIDE DISH with an omelet, that you have to PAY EXTRA for). Have never, in all my years of eating breakfast out (over 40 years) has toast ever been a paid for side dish. The sunny eggs came with potatoes and toast (go figure), but the toast tasted a little stale, even toasted. Based on how quickly the food was prepared and served, it seemed as if the line cook could only make one table at a time. And the table that ordered after us, sent their meal back for redo. Going back again for breakfast - no way. Try for lunch - don't think so based on breakfast experience. read more

This is for the NEW Carnation Café. I have gone many times and finally getting around for a review. Different style but just as good. I usually order the Eggs Benedict, Reuben or French Dip. This weekend my friend and I went there for dinner (Friday night). Since we go there enough, they know our names and give us the booth we normally sit in. Water was quick to arrive and kept full. The French dip was very tender and loaded with meat. It is on the lunch menu and not on the dinner menu but they made it for me. Bread was soft and grilled and had a nice buttery taste. Salad on the side was heaping and coated just right with the dressing. The Au Jus was piping hot. My throat is sore but this meal was so tender that I was able to eat most of it and besides it was just tasty. My friend got the burger and it was thick and cooked like she ordered it. It was huge and very juicy. She got the side of homemade chips and they were excellent. Then we all went back on Saturday as we had a friend from out of town. I got the eggs benedict. It was two huge, heaping muffins with sauce, tow huge eggs and tons of thick sliced ham and tons of breakfast grilled potatoes....lots of leftovers and a meal for the next day. One friend had the spinach omelet scrambled eggs and it was full of spinach. She loved it. the other friend had the chicken friend steak. Normally, it seems the chicken fried steak has too much breading, thin steak and greasy. Not here...steak was cut in three pieces and thin crust and lots of meat. Gravy had a hint of spice but not overbearing. She loved it. Prices are a tiny high but I am happy with food and service so it is worth it. They seem to try to make sure you are happy. Our drinks were always full and they came by often to make sure were happy. We boxed up our leftovers and ate them today. They haven't been open long and still may have a few bugs but overall, they are trying. The stop to see if you are happy and will fix any issues. The cooks will come by your table for feedback. Servers are right on and happy. They also offer fresh made dessert and we got the lemon meringue tart.....OMG, it is fricking light, tasty and just a slice of heaven. Be sure to get that and don't share....eat it all yourself! read more

First, I'll admit I'm a food snob - not for expensive food but for food that's simply and consistently good. Second, I live in Carnation and want nothing more than to see this new place survive AND thrive. Third, I know they're brand new so now's the best time to fix it! So that's why I'm putting all this out there...PLEASE keep up the effort to improve! Here's the lowdown: * They advertise a website but don't have one. Can't even find a phone number or menu online. Need to get with the 21st century. * No obvious signage out front - on a busy rural highway that has thousands of cars/trucks pass by every day. * They've improved the interior over the previous rendition, but it needs more warmth and personality. Praobably already working on that. * I ordered food togo - a cod fish sandwich w/ side salad and a bleu cheese burger w/ bacon and fries/crispy. Five different people asked me a variety of questions while I sat at the bar...all being helpful, but failing to communicate with each other. I watched the cook staff, wait staff and other staff very carefully - all seemed busy but confused. Makes sense when you're this new. However, with all those people running around (including children of the staff - not a bad thing in a family restaurant as long as it doesn't get out of control), when my food was casually placed on a stainles steel table on the back wall (in styrofoam containers - GET RID OF THE STYROFOAM - 21ST CENTURY), it just sat there. Five people walked by it before I belted out, "I think that's my food over there." * Too much disfunction and too many people - they can save a lot of time and money by streamlining and getting on the same page. * All the above is fully recoverable. Here's the food deal: my burger was a black chunk of some foreign element covered in soot and hard as a rock. The bacon on top was soggy, undercooked, fatty and limp. The bun (nice bun) was oversized for the shriveled burger and soggy, under-toasted with stale, boring bleu cheese sauce or dressing or whatever it was. No pickles or onions accompanied the burger - which could be fine, but they should ask or offer. The fries were cooked perfectly (I asked for crispy) - undersalted for me but perfect for my husband. * Husband's fish sandwich was quite yummy. A little over-battered and over-sized, but good. We ended up splitting that an feeding the insides of my burger to our cats...rest went in the trash. * Side salad was plain and predictable, but fresh. Either serve more dressing w/ the salad or reduce the size of your side salad. * We'll try it again and wish Carnation Cafe the best of luck! read more

First time having lunch here. I had the small Cobb salad. It was very good. Plenty of toppings. I also had their tomato basil soup. Really liked it. It had a ton of flavor and not heavy cream based. My husband had the taco salad. It was beautiful with a nice display of avocado on top. We will be back again soon. read more

The interior is pleasant and clean, the service is good and the food was great. I've been there twice, the first time, I had the Cod burger, it was so good! The fish was light, delicate and crispy, the bun was nicely toasted and the fries were pretty good. The second time, I had a French Dip and a side salad. It was a good salad, crispy and fresh and the Au Jus (sp?) was really good, nice beef flavor and not too salty. The french dip had high quality roasted beef, I think it was provolone cheese on a nice toasted french roll, and it was a generous sandwich--I had to take half of it home. It's a brand new restaurant and the service was quicker the second time I was there. . I thought the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. You can get a sandwich and fries (or whatever side you choose) in the $10 neighborhood. I liked it and I would recommend it. read more
