I highly recommend Glass House Tavern when you're heading to a Broadway show or hanging out in Manhattan. Located in the heart of the Theater District near Times Square, it's a great spot for a pre- or post-theater meal. I enjoyed a delicious twist on an Old Fashioned, called the Whistle Willow Old Fashioned and we noshed on Truffle Parmesan Fries, Calamari, and Crème Brûlée. Everything was DELISH! We had a reservation for 12pm on a Saturday and arrived at 5min after noon. There was already a line out of the door (everyone in line had reservations) and it took them about 15min to get to us and seat us at our table. The restaurant is quite large with two floors and most tables were already taken. It was very loud (likely because it was so crowded). They definitely needed more staff as we were seated for 15min before I could flag someone down to fill our water glasses. It took another 10-15min to get our waitress to come over (she confessed someone called out and she was covering alot of tables, to be clear our experience was not her fault and she was trying very hard). Our food came arrived about 25-30min after we ordered (we ordered simple stuff, scrambled eggs with home fries and sausage with a side of multigrain toast as well as a mushroom feta quiche with salad). When the food did arrive, they had given us bacon instead of sausage (no big deal as I like both), but the toast was literally a cracker it had been so toasted. I asked the guy who brought our food for a side of jam to make it more palatable and it never arrived. The food was decent and arrived hot, but the portions were small. The quiche was a single small piece (maybe 3 inches across) served on a small plate that one would use for a dinner roll. I visited Glass House Tavern for a pre-Broadway show dinner. It was so convenient because the restaurant was only one block away from the theater. We were served by Laura, who was knowledgeable about the menu, the wines, and on top of it all, she had a wonderful sense of humor. There was another server Larry who was also serving other tables, but we wound up chatting with him as well about the show we were about to see. For an appetizer, we split the lump crab cake. It was one large crab cake, and it served with a side of cucumber noodles. The crab cake crust was lightly crisp, and sweetness of the crab meat, and light seasoned outer crust were complimented by the cucumber noodles, which seemed to be pickled. The portion was quite ample. For entrees, I had the braised short ribs over Swiss chard and roasted carrots. Laura shared that the short rib had been slow cooked for over four hours, and the meat just falls apart. She wasn't wrong. The short ribs were cooked perfectly and extremely tender. They were quite flavorful, based on the rich savory sauce they were prepared in. The Swiss chard was nicely sauteed, along with the carrots that seemed to have been cooked in butter. My hubby had the NY strip steak topped with chimichurri, with fingerling potatoes and carrots. The steak was cooked well enough, however, the meat lacked sufficient seasoning. The chimichurri was a nice addition. The potatoes were a lovely companion to the steak, along with the sauteed carrots. For dessert, we shared a NY style cheesecake, which was pretty standard, good, and it had a caramel drizzle. We had a lovely Sancerre Blanc. If you're looking for a restaurant to have dinner before seeing a Broadway show, with American cuisine, Glass House Tavern is a convenient option. We had a lovely experience. Came here during the wknd of December 20th fir my daughters 18th BIRTHDAY and what I thought would be and in-and-out visit, turned into is being there for hours. My daughter and I sat there and just talked and talked. My daughter and I both order wings , I ordered the honey barbecue and she ordered habanero or sriracha wings, of which were delicious. The drinks were also really good! Our server "Talia" (I truly hope I got her name right) was a gem . She had the most bubbly & beautiful personality. She was very courteous, attentive and sweet. She made our experience amazing! She even sang Zaire (my daughter) Happy Birthday. The restaurant itself was very well-kept, heat, clean and service was organized. The Head manager even came and checked on us and the owner, I couldn't help but tell him how amazing our sever was. I've been coming into the city for 30 years, I have my favorites of course. is walking by here one day and happened to see the salmon dish on a video in front of the restaurant. stopped in at 6 on a show night, no res. I was immediately greeted and placed on the table of my choice. service was immediate and impeccable. Host stopped by twice to ask if everything was okay. My issues: salmon presentation was different than advertised, ok not a big deal. The salmon was cooked perfectly. The char on the skin was delicious. The sauce application was random, almost an afterthought, and barely there. But that was okay because the sauce was very very sweet. the salmon came out piping hot, while the couscous risotto was room temperature at best. chances are that had been plated while the fish was cooking. the other issue, it was completely bland. the color and the texture and the composition was fine I loved the sweet little bits of corn, but it was very flat. it desperately needed salt or perhaps a shot of Parmesan cheese. no salt or pepper was on the table either. I got a side of french fries which were very good but clearly frozen. For 14.00 for a cup of french fries I expect something different. one final issue, and I know it seems nitpicky. The bread brought to the table was shocking to me. it was one of those soft dry rolls that you get in a bag of 12 or comes with your order of fried chicken from a gas station greasy spoon. Bland, something in between a regular and potato bread, and flavorless. it was fresh however, but not warmed. the two pats of butter came out probably after being nitrogen frozen, it took a solid 10 minutes before I could use a knife to apply the butter to the bread. that kind of bread in New York City is just unforgivable giving the amount of bakeries and bakers close by. maybe a single piece of crusty Italian bread or ciabatta would have done much better or even handmade breadsticks. I think those minor issues make a big difference in overall customer experience, rock hard butter is always a downer, even when the bread is this mediocre. almost forgot the Caesar salad which was probably the best one I've had in years. creamy anxious delicious dressing with the softest of lettuce. I love the parmesan crisp but could do without the matchbook size pieces of the croutons, those were bone dry. overall great experience and I'll definitely be back. read more

The restaurant itself is nice, clean and we were seated immediately with our reservation. Our server was beyond polite and kind and got things going quickly. The flaw was that while it seemed like they kept noticing the empty water or drink glasses, they were not super quick in getting them refilled. We tried their pre-theater menu and the choices were simple but sounded great. We both got the short rib entree but each had the same complaint that the meat needed more salt and wasn't as flavorful as some we have had in the past. The desserts were good but again, nothing that I will be craving in the future. We had to flag another server to get pepper (half way through our meal). I asked for more gravy as my spare ribs were dry and my creamy mashed potatoes...we're not! The gravy they eventually brought? Wasn't the same that was on my dish. When we cashed out, no thank you. No acknowledgment at all. Came here for a quick pre theater drink with my bestie. Place was packed with your usual post work and pre theater people but we snagged 2 seats at the bar. Bartender greeted us quickly and got us a menu and we were able to order drinks quickly. The bar has bar food which unfortunately we did not partake as we feared we would run late to our show. I have never rated a restaurant this low. This had to be the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. We arrived for a six o'clock reservation. We were not happy with our seating and asked to be changed which we were. Then the maître d' came and said we couldn't sit there. It was reserved for 6 although it had only 4 chairs. So we were finally seated at an acceptable table. We ordered both appetizers and main course by 6:10. We received the appetizers quickly. However, we waited until 7:05 for our main course. We repeatedly asked the waiter what was going on and he just said he'd check but each time did not give us any reason. It felt like they were deliberately not get our dinner because we asked to change tables. The maître d' was particularly disrespectful when I asked what the problem was. We ate quickly because we had an 8 O'clock curtain. Every table we saw that came after us was seated, served and left before we got our dinner. We were expecting to be seated in dinner area, but we're not. The party was seated in the bar, which unexpected and uncomfortable. When it was expressed that we wanted to be be seated in dining area "we were informed, guest had reservations". I found that comment odd, because we also had reservations. Met my mother, my brother, and his family here for my nephew's birthday dinner. It took rather a long time for someone to finally show up and take both our food and drink orders. Normally, we order drinks first and peruse the menu. But our server took so long, we ordered dinner too. The food was absolutely superb. The hanger steak was flawless. My salad, which had pomegranate arils, was amazing. The crab cake, an appetizer that I had for an entree, was delicious and not overly breaded. It had sone crunchy veggies. We often come to Glass House Tavern for a meal before seeing theatre, and the food is consistently good. The ambiance is nice. The low rating is for the service that's been consistently disappointing. Several times we've gotten a server named Laura T who behaves particularly poorly. She is pleasant and professional in the beginning, but at the end of the meal after we've had drinks, appetizers, and entrées, she always pressures us to have dessert and tea/coffee. When we decline because we're trying to make a 7 pm curtain, her demeanor completely changes and she becomes brusque at best, if not blatantly rude and dismissive. The last time was particularly egregious, when she just dumped the credit card machine on our table and left us to figure out how to split the bill between 2 cards on our own. When someone in our party asked for a box to take leftovers home, Laura brought the container and asked if my friend wanted to transfer the contents herself or wanted Laura to do it. When my friend responded "whatever is more convenient", Laura responded saying "You tell me, I work for you" in a condescending tone that made my friend feel foolish for trying to be polite. I would suggest management retrain Laura regarding how to talk to people and what constitutes good service and decent manners. read more
