I just had a terrible experience at a place I used to like a lot. I gave it 4 stars in February. Now I would say, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Bought 4 X $25 gift cards at Costco. 2 worked and 2 didn't. When I went to the Ale House site, it said the two bad cards still had $25 not used. The bartender got Robert the Manager and he basically told me SORRY. He said if I had bought them at the restaurant they would have worked. He told me my only option was to call corporate and see if they could help. SORRY, this guy really doesn't understand customer service. I left with a really bad taste for how Robert didn't even want to resolve this. With the Ale House web site showing these cards with $25 on each, he should have taken the cards and resolved this with his corporate. There are too many other restaurants in Winston-Salem. I don't eat at restaurants where they don't care about me or provide customer service. Go somewhere else. read more

I literally only eat here for the spinach dip it's the absolute best thing on the menu and also perfectly portioned for a meal. They have a bar area as well as outdoor seating that is perfect for the warm months. The service here is always wonderful, can be a bit slow at times but the staff are super friendly always. read more

My daughter and I arrived in town following a long and delayed flight. We were starving so we ordered food from the car on our way to the hotel. Somehow we wound up one soda short, which can be a problem when you're eating spicy chili! I called the restaurant and the manager,Brandy, could not have been nicer! They immediately compensated us for the missing drink and were so kind and understanding. The food is delicious (my daughter got the Cobb salad and I had the chili) and it more than hit the spot. We were seated across from the bar. It was Sunday, after 10 pm, and the restaurant side was closed, we had to sit in the bar area. I watched five people actively vaping. Last year the same thing. We spoke to management about this. Apparently no one cares. But having someone vape near where I'm eating. Gross. Received our bill with 18% gratuity already added on. Horrible experience. Service was horrible, the servers knew they were getting their 20% large group tip no matter what, and they decided not to put any effort into making our group's experience pleasant. Waited an hour for drinks and apps to come in, and by that point some people decided to leave early because they couldn't wait another hour for the main course. After two hours, our main course arrived, well that is every one but mine. We had to tell the waiters they forgot my food and it took more time for mine to come out. Food was decent, but that was all that was. Everyone had different tabs, and the waiters forgot to charge one tab of an appetizer and tried to charge us instead! Instead of taking responsibility for one of their miscues they tried to get someone else to pay. I went twice in a week because I loved how the food was, they have a good amount of veggie options. The food came out quick and I sat at the bar both times and the bartenders were very attentive, talkative as well and overall a very friendly environment! I got their pretzel sticks with beer cheese the first time I went and the second time I went I got their veggie burger. Both were delicious and the fries were hot and fresh as well. I can't speak on much about their food since I've not ordered anything in awhile, but I can definitely assure you of their attentive service and overall mellow atmosphere to enjoy while on a date or drinking/dining with friends. The beers are always icy cold, and no matter how packed it can get there always seems to be room for you and your party, regardless. Both the manager and the bartender was very kind and conversational so I definitely look forward to returning often. I arrived on their Karaoke Night - hosted by DJ Tish (Tuesdays from 8 PM - 12 AM), and wound up winning their 1st prize ($25 off gift card to use when dining at Carolina Ale House). Thought this was going to be similar to Miller's Ale House down in Miami but I was wrong. Not sure if the quality was poor because I ordered for pick up instead of dine in. The hot honey wings had good flavor but they were so tiny. Also I know this is more of an economic thing but $12 for 6 wings is crazy. However the Macked Out Doughnuts were pretty good. When we pulled up, it was almost deserted so that made me second guess whether or not we should eat here but we asked a few patrons that were pulling up and they gave rave reviews so we decided to try it out. There's a decent selection of beers on tap here. And the Ale House could be a comfortable place to hang out...but the service here is consistently poor. It matters not whether you're at the bar or seated at a table; the staff is slow to attend to your needs in every instance. It's as though they don't recognize they are supposed to be checking on you, taking your order, or keeping up with your needs. And that same spirit carries back into the kitchen, whose staff seem incapable of turning out dishes in a timely fashion. Tonight I waited half an hour for an order of cheese fries. I was extremely pleased with my visit to Carolina Ale House at Winston-Salem. Once seated, I received great attention from the server from start to finish. The decision not to select a hand-held sandwich was directed towards the cajun pasta but requested the switch from shrimp to chicken. The food came out very quickly and the server refilled drinks while asking how things were progressing. Overall, it was a very good visit from start to finish. TLDR - Food was a 4.5, but the Service was a 1 Oh, where to start... We had high hopes. The inside felt like an older sports bar. Nothing terrible, but a few chairs at our table had broken pieces. The place was not packed. There were only three other tables besides ours, which leads me to the service. It took us 50 minutes from sitting down to getting our food. We had to ask for everything... silverware, napkins, and refills. Our server never checks in on us to ask if we need anything after bringing our food. We were given plastic silverware and told they didn't have any regular silverware ready, yet the next group that came in 5 minutes later were given regular silverware. We even heard him talking about giving us plastic silverware and laughing about it. Just disappointing because the Food was excellent. The wings were fantastic, I had their hottest sauce and it was great. The flavor was great, and the heat wasn't unbearable. The Ribs were about the same as Chili's. Someone tried their burgers, and that was amazing as well. The kids' meals were nothing to rave about, but our kids enjoyed the grilled cheese and BBQ chicken. read more

Came in on a Sunday night around 5:45 on November 16, 2025. Was seated promptly but had to go ask for a server after waiting over 10 minutes. Restaurant was not busy and there were at least four servers around the front desk. We finally ended up ordering and after five minutes or so waitress came back and said they were out of lettuce so we removed the salad from our order. Then he gave us plastic silverware to eat with - while our neighbors were given real silverware. I requested real silverware and he gave the excuse that none was rolled. Decent wait time as we expected, seemed half the restaurant was open as usual, don't know what management has got going on. When we were sat ordered spinach dip. Instead server dropped fried pickles. Told her that wasn't what we ordered and she took them to a different table, gross. Waited 15 minutes for a drink. I order 12 wings honey buffalo, partner ordered pub burger with fries cooked medium. Food arrived, still no spinach dip, wings were lukewarm, underside of the plate was filthy, wings were TINY, not ideal for $22. Burger was way overcooked, fries were cold. Server came again and asked if we got the spinach dip, which we never did. Server made it seem like she did us a favor by taking the spinach dip off the bill, but we never got it in the first place so little confused by that. Paid, left tip according to service which was not great, drove 5 minutes down the road and pulled over, threw up everything. Not sure if it was the wings or the sweet tea but was sick literally 5 minutes after leaving. I tend to forget about this place but it has never disappointed. Nothing fancy but the service and food is usually consistent. My salad was fresh and my daughter's burger was good. The french onion soup was good but a few too many onions this time. There is a pool table that offers entertainment while you wait. I had heard some good things both on and off Yelp, but this was just a 3 star in my opinion. I took the Fam-Bam on Sunday afternoon and we got the seating in the covered outside area. The table was not clean and after we ordered our food we got two of the items soon (Pub Burgers), the third item a Cobb salad took another 7 or 8 minutes. The burger was okay, nothing super special about it, and even though we asked for refills several times and silverware it took a while to get those because the servers were stretched too thin. I am only giving this rating based on my recent experience with the Asst. Manager, Kayln. We have been regular customers long before COVID. We average going every two weeks. We love the servers and have been on a first name basis for years. Sierra, Taylor and Payton are awesome! They always recommend food orders that are consistently good. If any food does come out that is not excellent, they send it back for us. We love all 3 of them! A fairly new server waited on us and there was a misunderstanding about my drink order. When I questioned, she asked if I wanted to speak to the Assist. Manager, and I said yes. Instead of doing the right thing (should have taken it off our bill), she was rude and refused to take it off our bill. I am retired after working in customer service for over 41 years, and I know great from horrible customer service. We did not return for a good while. I love Carolina ale House! Been here a few times, love the beer selection and I have actually found all the food to be quite tasty. Tonight I had Juan and Sagittarius( I forgot her name) Taking care of me and did a great job. I tend to sit by myself, drink my beer, do a lot of work on my phone but also listen to the conversations around me to see what kind of nut cases are at the bar or interesting conversations to join into. I received great service, good conversation, got to watch all the peeps around the bar and even watch Tiger Woods try to make a Bertie after a lousy shot landed them against the tree with no way out and he managed to get out. I got the fried pickles and the turkey club pita - which I loved the pita! I probably had more beer than I needed and he can only eat half of the club but I'm in my hotel room now enjoying the other half while I write reports then get to bed because I have to get up at 2:30. I've been to other Carolina ale House location and always have been pleased. These guys behind the bar were a hoot! I like to be entertained when I eat especially when I sit silently and absorb it all in while also dissecting their service, the quality of food, the atmosphere, and the convenience to my hotel. I always stay at Hampton Inn's when I travel so it's right down the road it was a happy camper by the time I left. Good service, good food, good people. Kind of disappointed with our whole experience tonight. Our food tasted really good once we got it, but it was unfortunate that our service was lacking. It took our waiter over 20 minutes just to come get our drink order or say hello. Then mixed our order up, only stopped to refill drinks once and brought everything to the table except my entrée, which was a salad that I didn't get until every one else was already finished with their meal. We ordered the Honey Buffalo Wings, Buffalo Wings, and the Crispy Ribs. The wings were good! Everyone loved both flavors. They were juicy with plenty of meat on their little bones. The Crispy Ribs were a bit too crispy for me. Almost dried out. NOT enough meat on those bones for sure! I should have skipped the ribs and ordered more wings! The service here is really good! The young lady that helped us was a delight! If you have shopped long enough to need some nourishment, stop here for wings! My family and I recently visited Carolina Ale House and although the staff was amazing and willing to go the extra mile the situation still didn't work for half of my party. we had several members of our group that was unable to enjoy the food due to the cross contamination of food. They cook ALL of the food in the same oil it was very surprising to learn of this. My group was unaware and we didn't recall seeing anything that stated this during our reservation set up prior to coming in. With so many people today having so many allergies to foods I would have thought this would not have been an issue. Don't get me wrong the place and the crew were ALL great! So many restaurants do use the same oil however most cook shrimps, and fish completely separate from chicken, we do hope this will change down the line somewhere, FOOD ALLERGIES CAN BE SEVERE EVEN DEADLY IN SOME CASES, please take this into consideration for your guest who would like the Ale house experience but not at the cost of a life. read more
