The front host provided a very poor experience. When we arrived, we were told no tables were available, even though I noticed several empty high-tops at the bar. When I asked about them, the host said we could only sit at one specific table in the aisle, while the others were "reserved" with at least a 45-minute wait. Trusting his word, we sat where he directed us. More than an hour later, those "reserved" tables were still completely empty. I don't appreciate being misled. The food itself was mediocre, and service was inattentive--I even had to request another drink after mine had been empty for some time. Overall, a very disappointing experience. This place is super convenient when starting at the aloft. I got in late the first night and ordered take away. I went down to pick it up and brought it back to my room. I got the green goddess with salmon and the beet and citrus salad. Both were good, but very small portions. The beet came with an abundance of dressing and the green goddess needed more. Well, I had dinner with a friend the following night there, and she got the green goddess and I did another salad with salmon. The salads were 2-3x the size. The salmon was burnt. Had a nice experience at Caroline when we went to Austin for Austin City Limits. Their chairs drink was delicious and their Avocado toast with breakfast potatoes really hit the spot. You order at the counter and then pick a spot to sit with your number. Though the location of the restaurant is not ideal, the atmosphere is great inside and they even have an outdoor patio with a lot of greenery where you can sit. What a cool spot with something for everyone! A friend and I were waiting for the Joe Pera show at the paramount and stumbled upon this gem. As you come up the front, there is a nice little outdoor area to eat. This area was already full. So we opted for the bar. The inside was very interesting with a friendly and cozy bar to the left and a dining area with plenty of seating to the right. Straight forward was a beautiful coffee counter with all types of goodies. The toasted marshmallow latte looked promising. We ended up with a banana and bourbon type concoction and a mock mule or dry mule I believe they call it. Delicious! The bartenders were fast and doing some tricks behind the counter. I dropped into Caroline on a Saturday afternoon and pleased to be seated immediately, even without reservations! I can't remember the last time that happened in Austin. Environment: The restaurant is massive! They have a huge outdoor patio on the ground level and tons of indoor seating. I didn't get a chance to explore, but there's also a coffee shop section and rooftop patio. Food: They serve many classic breakfast items, such as Huevos Rancheros, Pancakes, and Biscuits & Gravy. Prices sit around $16-23. Prices seemed fair based on serving sizes and given the downtown location. I opted for simple pancakes. They were really tasty! Fluffy, sweet, and warm! My friend ordered the Enchiladas and enjoyed them! What wasn't great?: While walking into the restaurant, there was a noticeable and unpleasant odor. The space had a fun vibe but we did have to split into two tables since there wasn't enough room for all of us at one. Me and some friends started with the elote. We were definitely expecting traditional elote but this was a dip version with chips. It was unique but still tasty. I ordered the salmon for my main dish and I really liked it. It came in a flavorful broth with bok choy, pearl onions, and mushrooms. It felt very light but filling which was nice. I'd order it again if I came back. We went into this reservation with high expectations after hearing great things about this restaurant. The evening started off well -- the appetizer was good, though nothing particularly memorable. Unfortunately, after that point, the experience went downhill. This was a five-course meal that took over two hours to complete. I had to extend my parking three separate times because of how long everything was taking. What made it even more frustrating was watching tables that were seated 30 minutes after us receive their meals and leave well before we did. There were long, unexplained gaps between each course. When we asked about our food, we were repeatedly told it would be coming out "soon," yet we continued waiting for extended periods. The pacing felt disorganized and poorly managed. The food itself was also disappointing. The lamb entrée was mostly fat with very little actual meat. The tomato soup was extremely salty -- we could barely eat it. For a restaurant offering a five-course experience at this price point, the quality did not match the expectation. To top it off, a 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill despite the slow service and overall experience. It's frustrating to be charged a mandatory tip when the service did not reflect that level of hospitality. Overall, the cost was far too high for the quality of food and service we received. We were a party of 11 so made reservations months ahead of time. The service was fine, except when someone bright appetizers at the end of the meal. The apps were quite tasty: crab and artichoke dip, extra deviled eggs, and corn dip were all popular with both kids and adults. (There's an off menu kids menu.) The short ribs, mushroom bolognese, wagyu burger, and lobster pasta were all underwhelming in one way or another. Pasta was al dente to the point of being hard and undercooked; short ribs had a bland cauliflower concoction instead of a chef's kiss of risotto or something tasty; wagyu burger looked pretty small for $21; and it took some effort to locate the lobster in the pasta. I want to start by saying that this is review is based on my taste buds. I had the chicken waffles and I would say it was 7 out of 10. The waffles, syrup, and home made butter were delicious. The chicken in the other hand was over cooked and some part were pretty hard on them. I am from the south so I am use to the chicken having the bone so it makes it more tender but these were strips so they were dry. The enchiladas were amazing, they tasted fresh unlike many other places that have an out of the can taste. This was by far better than the chicken and waffle. I wish I didn't get the grilled Mahi addition to my green goddess salad, it was cooked well but very oily and the seasoning was missing. Food for me was a 3.5. At first the chicken wings seem bland, but they have a Szechuan like afterburn. Real nice pepper mix on there. The added texture of the panko like gratin coating on them was nice, but possibly unnecessary? My salad wasn't prepped very well with some very fibrous stems remaining on the kale. I understand what kale is supposed to be texture wise but soke of the stems were still a quarter inch thick making it very difficult to chew. The salad was presented beautifully and compliments to the chef for the plantings tonight. I wish I didn't add the piece of Mahi for 11 bucks. If you insist on a protein with your salad, I'd go for steak or chicken. I just didn't see the value for a bland piece of white fish. The downstairs is like a regular restaurant, dimly lit, similar feel to North Italia. The upstairs is really fun! My child's meal was quickly ordered and delivered as waffles with a side of berries. My child could not stop eating any berries placed on the table. They also liked the waffle, yet played with them more than they ate them. My husband and I wanted to try them since they smelled SO GOOD, yet you know as a parent not to sample food that's been played with if you value avoiding an upset stomach. Now, the Brunch Burger. It's been a long time since a burger has left me thoroughly satisfied. This burger did just that! Be warned - this is a messy, runny, delicious burger, and I recommend usually a fork and knife to gather up each bite. The potatoes were good, yet dip them in the juices that flow from the burger.
