I used to come here and get my hair colored and cut by Lisa. She was great. I decided however to try someone new to get highlights. My hair is dark brown but I have gotten highlights successfully at Carolynes before and have been very happy with be results. I went in yesterday for some highlights and a trim. The lady messed up my hair so badly that she asked me to come back today so she could fix it. I spent a total of 8 hours at that salon and she still could not fix my hair. The horrible receptionist at the front told me it was not the hair dressers fault because since I am pregnant my hormones change my hair and it is essentially my fault and there is nothing more they could do. As I was walking out of the salon another hair dresser says "it's not that bad". Wow. That's what I want to hear! I am so disappointed. Especially after she still Charged me $60.00 for the trim! Now I am a pretty understanding person and I appreciate her trying to make it right the next day. She's only human and we don't always get it right... I get it. But I walked out of that salon after 8 hours with damaged hair that looks worse than when I initially went in. Now I need to go somewhere else and have them fix my 60.00 mistake. Jen is amazing! She is truly an artist with nails (fingers and toes-but especially toes!). I've been seeing her for 14 years, and her skill has only evolved with time. She is so creative and knows what will look awesome-just trust her. She'll suggest colors and patterns for you if you don't know what you want, and if you have a crazy idea she can probably do it. And she's great at incorporating rhinestones into stuff!! I am so loyal to her nail art that even though I live in NYC, land of the man/pedi combos, I almost never get my nails done here because I'd rather wait the six months until I make my semi-annual visit home to AZ. Her toenail paintings seem to last forever! Some of my favorites are watermelons (great for summer!), American Flag (complete with rhinestones, a 4th of July fave), zebra stripes, tuxedos (SO cute for formal events! and she does whatever color combo you want), and team spirit/school colors (she even begrudgingly painted my toes with U of A spirit despite her ASU allegiance!). Everyone I've referred to her over the years has nothing but raves for her. As for other services at Carolyne's, I've had my hair done by Liz and she's pretty good. I have friends who have seen other stylists there (whose names I can't remember off the top of my head) that they love, and the place is pretty big and spacious, so there are plenty of stylists to choose from! With regards to the comments on the front desk people, I understand...but we're in Scottsdale. Come on. The owner and her daughter have always been nice to me and my fam, possibly because we've been there with them for so long, but I've seen the way they act around other people and it's not anything out of the ordinary for this town. It's definitely not the worst I've seen, but just suck it up-you're in a salon in the land of pretentiousness. You'll walk out of there as gorgeous as the rest of the city and you'll forget the front desk people five minutes later anyway. Moral of the story: GO SEE JEN!!!! read more

Shea has been cutting and coloring my hair for 7 years ever since I moved to Arizona. As an ex hair salon manager, moving stylists is a huge scary step! I fell upon Shea as asked for a master colorist and stylist and my stars were aligned; I had found my person! Over the last 7 years she has taken me from light brown to light blonde gold but over the past year I've been thinking about a grey transition. This is what she just did. Let's begin with, I never give any place a review this is my first time but I am very disappointed with the service in this place. I took my girls for a haircut and and I asked to cut my oldest daughter's hair in long layers and she decided that she just need it a trim without asking then she don't even dry her hair. (So I don't noticed that she didn't do what I asked)Then it was my youngest daughters turn, ask her to cut it about 2 inches and a she did the same just a trim until I told her that I need her to cut it a bit more and she did it but not to happy. Then they charge me $35 for each hair cut. It will be ok, if they did what I asked and I least dried their hair. This place is a ripoff, not recommended. read more

It's never easy when faced with having to find a new hair stylist. I've been going to the same stylist for well over a decade and when I was forced into a situation that meant I'd have to find someone new I was really pretty nervous about it. I live close to this salon so I checked the Yelp reviews and two names stood out with great reviews and longevity in the business. I called and made an appt with ease to see Shea. I arrived for my appt and Shea was on time and ready. Also, very professional and nicely dressed. I was immediately put at ease during the consultation and felt I was in good hands and that she understood what I was looking to achieve. She explained the approach she'd like to take and then verified that the quoted price was okay. Love that! Nothing worse than an expensive surprise. Shea you are amazing! I left today so happy with my hair! The color is beautiful and the cut feels so good. You truly made a very anxious time for me a true pleasure. I really couldn't be happier! Thank you again Shea! Please note that I am writing specifically to review my experiences with Boyd, one of the nail technicians at Carolyne's. I think the salon itself is adequate -- stylish but not overly-pretentious decor, a super convenient location, and a very indulgent and current selection of guilty pleasure US Weekly, OK and Vanity Fair magazines. It's obviously very girlie-oriented and I always feel like I am treating myself when I'm there. Boyd, however, is way more than adequate! He is one of the only people who I will trust with my fingernails -- best manicures I have ever had! I have natural nails and I am so protective of letting "just anyone" have their way with my delicate nail beds. Boyd is a pro and is just as OCD about nails and polish as I am. The polish selection at Carolyne's has got to be best-in-class: all the technicians share, and I swear you can name an OPI seasonal shade from 4 years ago and someone will know exactly what you're talking about and locate it for you! To boot, I genuinely enjoy spending time with Boyd -- just fun and a pleasure. Sometimes I will also pop in for a pampering pedicure, and I highly suggest the new chocolate-scented scrub/mask/lotion products. Mmmmm.... The next time you feel like you deserve an upgrade from one of those walk-in places, consider paying a bit more and making an appointment with my boy Boyd! read more

I used to go to Carolyne's some time ago when I lived in Scottsdale. When I moved to Fountain Hills, I tried to go local. That was a big mistake! I have not been happy with the many stylists I've tried. Just got my hair cut yesterday at Carolyne's and I cannot say enough good things about Danielle. The best cut I've had in many, many years. I'm changing my review from last time. Steven Mason's work has gone down hill. The last time he did my hair there were big brown triangles in my hair line from the color not reaching it. He tried to fix it with no luck and said oh well. I said other stylists have had no problems with that area and explained what to do. He told me I should probably just go back to them then. I had to go to another stylist to fix it. Which took her no time at all. Maybe he needs to go back to school for some more training? Or get a better attitude. There are hair salons everywhere in this town, so customer service counts a TON. I love, love, love Carolyne's Salon. I see Sara, who can do fantastic things with my unruly hair. They have great prices, are centrally located, have been in business a long time, and clearly have a sense of family there. Everyone feels welcome when they walk in -- you'll find the salon to be clean and organized, and everyone is laughing and smiling. If you have crazy curly hair and need it tamed, shaped, or styled, as for Sara! But, there are plenty of other talented stylists there as well, so you'll be in good hands with anyone. read more

Scottsdale must have the highest number of salons per capita in the Southwest. The fierce competition means they have to always give their A game or risk customers going to the next salon over. Since Carolyne's just rents out space to the artists, this review is limited to their running of the front desk and the facility itself. I'll keep this brief so please excuse my bluntness. The people who answer the phones and handle customers at the front desk talk in overly brusque tones to the customers, make customers wait too long before they acknowledge them in person or on phone, and just generally have terrible phone skills on both a people and technical level. Forget about it if you need a stylist with a certain specialty, because either they don't have a clue or will just match you up with whomever is available regardless of what you asked for. I got a better result from the student at the beauty school down the street than the "specialist" they set me up with. The salon itself is decorated nicely, but is so dirty with fingerprints on everything and a thick layer of dust that's highly visible in all the out of the way places. This is the kind of salon that one might be able to live with if the stylist they love moves there, but otherwise I'd recommend one of the hordes of other Scottsdale salons that try harder. read more

I was really disappointed that they would not honor an expired gift certificate. They took the money that my friend paid, so they ought to honor it. I own a business and we have expirations on our gift cards, but it's just to encourage people to use them. We always honor an expired one. What difference does the date really make? Money is money. Not a good experience! I had my hair done by Lizz. As independent contractors go, she is not aware that confrontational responses to an unhappy customer is not a wise business decision. When I went to have my hair done, she showed several pictures to illustrate what she thought I wanted. The pictures were correct, low lights on my blonde hair, long layers, no grey. She said she would leave "a few greys for a more natural look". With a half inch grey growth line and an under layer of dark brown, this was not what we had discussed. But, things like this can and do happen. I went home to see if It would "grow" on me. It did not. When things like this happen, It is how they are handled that mark a true professional. When I went back to talk to her about it, she started out saying it was an easy fix, so far so good. But she didn't stop. I was lectured about how I was unclear as to what I wanted. That there was no grey line, that the under layer of dark brown was not her fault, it was how my hair processed. She was angry, argumentative and went out of her way to make me feel like I was to blame and wasted her time. I also received a lecture about not booking for her time when all I wanted to do was talk (please note, I did tell the desk I wanted to talk, they booked the time - but I left feeling like I took money out of her pocket as she now had an hour of unbooked, unpaid time on her hands). I would strongly recommend avoiding Lizz unless you plan never to ask to redo her work, or state that she didn't do what you wanted. Based on her reactions, I would never trust sitting in her chair again. This is a lovely salon, and there are other stylists there that are extremely nice and professional (Astin among them. My husband had to go back for a retouch, and she was very gracious and did a fabulous job!!). read more

I've been seeing Lisa A. for the better part of 11 years - wherever she goes, I go. The salon is 45 minutes away from my house so I've tried going someplace closer and each time I did, I left extremely disappointed. Driving to see Lisa is well worth it. I've gone from my natural dark brown, to blonde, back to brown and back to blonde, long hair, short hair, pixie cut and everything in between. She knows my style, what I look good in and what I don't, and I've never left unhappy. I love her creativeness, honesty and desire to try new fun things.
