Stopped by based on a recommendation from our hotel. Chris was the tasting room attendant and was very helpful. Wine was very good, however, we were a little put off by the owner's reaction to Chris giving a homeless man a dollar. The homeless man came in and asked for a quarter. Chris looked into his wallet and said he would give him a dollar, which I thought was very nice of him. I understand the importance of not wanting the homeless to return thinking they will always be funded money, but within 10 seconds of Chris giving the money, the owner ran down from upstairs and said "don't you ever f-ing do that again or else they'll keep coming back". Chris took it well and apologized, but it was very rude to scold him in front of us. read more

I've been coming to Carr for a few years now for their excellent Cabernet Franc which I think is one of the best examples of wine made from this varietal, but more recently they have been hosting the Folk Orchestra of Santa Barbara's rehearsals, and I have to say that it's been very nice to be having rehearsals in a winery production facility. Everyone here has been really nice to the orchestra, and all of us definitely appreciate that (as well as the delicious wines). As I mentioned before, the Cab Franc is absolutely amazing. There are three different bottles to choose from in terms of Cab Franc. There is also the El Jefe, a blend featuring Cab Franc that is amazingly on tap. The tasting room is open late, too, so it works well if you want to go tasting after an early dinner. I'm really grateful that Carr is hosting the Folk Orchestra, and I look forward to many more awesome rehearsals here as well as bringing my friends here to taste the awesome wines! read more

We stopped by during the holidays and they were having an event with Holidays on Haley. I hope this becomes an annual thing as I loved spending some time at this winery. They have a lovely outdoor fire with plenty of seating and extremely inviting on a cold night. For the event we got to taste three of their wines and I loved them all-cab franc, grenache, and I think a syrah. This is a very relaxed and comfortable wine tasting room where you can relax and enjoy wine without feeling rushed. Great experience and we'll be back soon to get a few bottles. read more

Carr Winery was my first winery experience in Santa Barbara. It was a nice stop because the atmosphere is intimate, but inviting. You would want this to be your local winery! There's tasting at the bar and then also some booth/table seating for small groups. It wasn't crowded with a ton of tourists like the other winery we visited (we felt very rushed there). We go to take our time with our tasting flight and enjoy each other's company. I liked how they were able to customize a tasting of just white wines for me. The rest of my group had the tasting where it was mixed. We also played shuffle board. Thankfully someone in our party knew now to play! The area where Carr Winery is is kind of industrial, but there was plenty of street parking and what seemed to be neighboring waterholes. ;) If I could only pick one winery to taste at in SB, I would pick Carr. Ehhhh this place was okay. I enjoyed the cheese pairing with the wine but wish they offered pairings for BOTH tastings and not just the specialty tasting. When it comes to Carr Wines, two words come to mind, Cabernet Franc! It's delicious. Rich, full-bodied, slightly spicy with a hint of tannins...yum! If you like big, bold reds or Rhone varietals, you'll probably enjoy Carr's Cabernet Franc. The tasting room is expansive, with a few high top tables, a large bar and lounge type seating. It's the perfect venue for private events. I've been to several private events here and the space works seamlessly with catering and is large enough for dancing too. I've been a regular at Carr for almost two years since I have several friends who are members. The atmosphere is wonderful being surrounded by all of their aging wine barrels, and the cool temperature due to ideal aging of the wine in those barrels is always refreshing. I've had loads of fun playing their table shuffleboard, checkers and especially backgammon. The wine is fantastic, and there are two tasting menus to choose from. PS Veronica is the best! On a Sunday Funday afternoon me and my friend decided to do some wine tasting using the Axxess card 2 for 1 tasting. Apparently we were the only customers this day at the winery and the place was a ghost town but nonetheless we were warmly greeted by Acacia. I hope I spelled her name right! She was very knowledgable in explaining each wine we tasted and we had great conversation. Luckily they sell chocolate bars so it really complimented the red wines. If you get cold easily I recommend you bring a light sweater or jacket since it's pretty chilly inside. read more

This is by far my favorite tasting room in Santa Barbara. I've been coming here for years, prior to becoming a local and I have had a wonderful experience every time. The tasting room is quaint and relaxing. They offer comfortable spots at the bar, cozy seats away from the bar, and shuffle board! They also have live music, which I've only checked out once, but when I did the band was amazing and it was a great, family-friendly atmosphere. Their wines are phenomenal. I've never had one I didn't enjoy. I especially like their Pinos, Cab Francs, and Syrahs. They are also dog friendly :) Carr is a must visit spot in Santa Barbara. read more

My girlfriend and I visited Carr Winery on a recent trip to Santa Barbara. She said she was there a few years ago and really liked all the wines and thought I would like them. She was spot on. You walk into the place and there's a small "room" with a low hanging ceiling. Lots of dark wood and the tasting bar to the left when you walk in. I've tasted in Temecula, Napa, Sonoma, Paso, and Solvang and saw something I've never seen before: seats at a wine tasting bar. Oh it was glorious. The ability to sit and enjoy your wine instead of standing is a fantastic thing. I know there are liquor laws that stop other places from being able to have seats, but it was so amazingly nicer to sit and drink the wine instead of standing, I had to mention it. After I got over the stools at the bar, I saw the HUGE room in the back. There were chairs, tables, couches with games...backgammon, a small shuffleboard table, and checkers. To the right was a large, open area with wine barrels and other wine making equipment. It's always neat to see how the "fudge is packed." If you ask the wine pourer person nicely, they'll take you up top to where the library wines are stored. Tons and tons of awesome wine up there. I think we estimated 6,000-7,000 bottles of quality wines up there. It was really need to see the different vintages, styles and varietals. Now, on to the good stuff. All of the wines we tasted were all nice. A few of them weren't wines I typically enjoy, but I could tell that there was quality in them...they just weren't my favorite. Most of them were pretty fruit-forward with smooth finishes. You got 6 tastes for $10. Of course, if you're nice and they're a bit slow, you sometimes get bonus tastes. That was nice. They also have wines on tap that you can get in a liter bottle to go. When you come back with the liter bottle for a refill, it's $5 cheaper. Seemed like a pretty good thing to bring to someones house when visiting. I'll be visiting Carr again anytime I visit Santa Barbara. It's a quality place with quality wines. read more

It is hard to believe that I have never reviewed Carr before today!!! Carr is a great place, it is in that other "funky" zone which may be up and coming. I know that a lot of people don't make it to Carr because it is not in the Funk Zone and is too far to walk. But that is a shame. I would suggest perhaps starting your day at Carr while driving is still an option, then park and walk the zone the rest of the day. You might want to hit Telegraph next door while you are at it. When you pull up to Carr you see a big Quonset hut that makes you think of a black and white WWII movie. Not the cozy wine tasting room nestled in the middle of a vineyard in the wine country--quite the opposite. But when you go inside it is kind of magical. A well thought out tasting room which has the most comfortable feel to it! The place is large and they keep the lights dim. The production area dominates the building and when they aren't actively making wine it makes a wonderful room for events and parties. The wines are very good, I wouldn't say that they are absolute best that Santa Barbara has to offer but most are quite good. The staff on the other hand is the best that Santa Barbara has to offer and I have long standing friendships with several of the great people at this winery. Whether you become a member or not I would recommend getting on the mailing list as Carr has so many great events throughout the year. Very nice inside. Large and dark. Kinda romantic. Very cold. The aid is set to 60 at all times. Bring a sweater or drink more red wine! The tastings were a overpriced with small pours. $10-12 for 5 small tastings. Also, the tastings are pre set, so I wasn't able to chose the varietals that I prefer and enjoy. Probably wouldn't go back for a tasting, but possible for a glass of wine or to host a private event. read more

Very small quaint place people are friendly. Enjoyed the wine tasting short but sweet if your hungry eat before you go there they don't serve lunch or dinner. Carr is a cute winery away from the busy vibe of the Funk Zone. We went with a group of 10 or so on a Friday night and luckily didn't have a problem grabbing enough seating near the shuffleboard table. Everyone had different wines, from glasses to growlers to bottles, and enjoyed their drinks. They have cheese plates available but, as is the case with most wineries, no food. The inside is neat because people were crushing the grapes in large vats near the bar the casks of wine were stacked up everywhere. This place is kid and dog-friendly, and they also seemed relaxed about people bringing in outside food. Triumph Brewing is right next door and on this night they had a Mexican food truck outside, so there are some dining options if you're hungry. Definitely check out Pure Order Brewing about a block away if you're visiting Carr. read more

This place was our first stop on our road trip to Pismo Beach and I'm so glad we made a little stop here. Christy or Christine (i'm sorry i forgot, I got a little buzzed) helped us and she was the best! She was very friendly, and talked about each wine and taught us about some other stuff that i probably would remember if I hadn't gotten so buzzed... I guess that's what happens when you go wine tasting on an empty stomach at 11:30 in the morning. heheheh She was kind enough to make some recommendations for us for our trip to Pismo Beach as well as places to eat in SB. I enjoy this local winery for its uniqueness and its delicious and affordable selection. I have a growler here because when you purchase a growler, you can continue to come back and refill it with their tap selection. The location of the tasting room is in a huge and amazing warehouse with wine barrels everywhere. It is dark, and romantic yet really open and fun. Having moved out of Cellar 205 months back and into his own space over on Salsipuedes, he is truly doing his thing.
