I finally made it out to Carr after 6 years living in SB. I don't know what it is but I tend to gravitate toward the valley when I feel the urge to go wine tasting. I'd heard great things about Carr and had it on my list of things to do when the perfect opportunity cropped up to get me out there- the Spring Release Party. My friends and I attended the Spring Release Party and had a great time. The only downside was realizing how expensive the adventure was the next morning. We all decided to do the tasting for $10 so we could decide which bottle to get. In the end, we bought 2 bottles of Syrah since we all agreed that one was the best. (The Syrah was a bit young I think since it still had a fruity taste to it. Give it a couple years and it will be a great Syrah). What got us was the corkage fee Carr charges for each bottle. I would have understood the fee if it wasn't their own bottle of wine but it doesn't make sense at all to charge to open their own wine. I asked around if other wineries do that and, not surprisingly, they don't. So I think Carr should reconsider ripping off their customers like that. Other than that, great atmosphere, decent wine selection, and located near downtown. read more

How I came to be at Carr Winery vs. any of the other attractive wineries in town :I was buying books at The Book Den and when I asked the woman behind the register where to go for wine tasting, she gave the following glowing recommendation: "There's some winery close by on Salsipuedes St , or maybe it's Olive St, I can't remember and it doesn't have a sign and their outdoor seating is in a parking lot and I can't remember the name of it. I'm too busy trying not to run over the people in the parking lot outdoor seating to pay close attention to the actual place." Ok, sold. We'll check it out. It was indeed on Salsipuedes St and it's quite easy to find. You leave the more central portion of SB for quieter, somewhat deserted roads as you head to Carr Winery. Good-bye State Street and crowds. Yes, the outdoor seating is in the parking lot but there's a very legible, very visible sign announcing that the nondescript warehouse is in fact, Carr Winery. It's basically an aluminum-sided warehouse. Do not let this turn you off--this only adds to the character of a very nice winery. Stash your bike or your car and head indoors to a very roomy, cozy, rustic warehouse-of-a-winery. There's an L-shaped bar to your left, along with a lot of tempting merchandise (including some sexy girl panties with 'Carr' printed on the front and 'Haute Wine' printed on the back). Straight ahead, the space really opens up to reveal a back wall comprised of stacks of wooden barrels, presumably busy aging various red and white wines. High tops and stools are scattered over the polished concrete floors and a shuffleboard is to the left. The room is all brown and golden toned, with dim lights. It's crazy inviting- easily a place where you could pass several hours with a good date, a good friend or a group of people. We grabbed a spot at the bar because we were there for a tasting. Mmmm, the tasting. Thinking of it so that I can write this review makes me want more. She poured one white- a Chardonnay aged in oak...then we moved on to the good stuff: a pinot blended from multiple varietals followed by a pinot from a single varietal. We wrapped things up with a Cabernet and a red table blend. They were all quite delicious. Our sommelier was very knowledgeable and fun and of course, everything you taste is for sale. nutz-n-bolts: prices: average parking: street, super easy dress: casual. but I guess this applies to all of SB what makes it special: the space for sure. It's far cooler than most of the tasting rooms I've been to. I also like that it's set apart from all of the State Street craziness. Finally, the wine is higher quality than a lot of the other tasting rooms. Oh, and don't forget their special wine panties! Cons: none. You should go. read more

An excellent winery to visit during the harvest season. During our trip to Santa Barbara we decided to stop by some wineries and came across Carr. I was a little skeptical to enter the winery since the exterior of it was nothing like the wineries that I have experience in Temecula. Well, was I in for a big surprise once inside the look and feel was like i had enter my next door neighbor small winery and i was part of the magic! (now if only i had a neighbor or friend with their own winery, heck i wish I had my own winery!) I suggest going during the harvest months since you get to experience everything up close and personal. As we tasted the wine we saw them start the whole cleaning/ de stemming process. The people working their explained what was happening while they put the grapes through these great machines and even let us take some pictures, its was awesome. A tour and taste of SB all for $10! The wine itself was light and delicious but the ambiance was fantastic and therefor every time I visit SB I will definitely stop by Carr! SideNote: There is a Beer company next to Carr, not sure the name of it now, but if you go during the weekend you can do a taste of Wine and Beer all in one stop! read more

True Wine Lover here... of the close to 200 wineries/labels in Santa Barbara County, Carr is one of the very few that have earned my membership. I have tasted at least 125 wineries, and Carr is in the very top tier. My "investment" or "spending" on Carr wines each month is second only to my mortgage, and I live in SB. And I enjoy every $ I invest in good times and memories with Carr. The winery is a great space, great vibe, very friendly staff and great members. For $10 you get six tastings of different wines. Situated in a barn-like space (located in the industrial park area), the place does look a little like Napa. The lady who served us the wine was not very personable, and did not explain or try to "sell us" any of the wines she poured. And even if she did, I'm not sure if I would've bought a bottle from there. One thing to note which may be of interest for others is that they have empty bottles that you can fill and refill with their wines. They say that the wine can last for about 5 days and after you're done, get a refill for a discounted cost. Pretty good deal! read more

The wines aren't great, but they produce a few solid varietals. It was good enough to buy some so our $10 tasting fees were waived because we bought 3 bottles. Like a picnic blanket in the middle of a city park, the dark, classy tasting area is smack in the heart of a winery so busy with things like forklifts, mile high barrels, big machines, and hoses, it's like a Richard Scarry book. And there's shuffleboard! So go for the atmosphere: it's the best of the five wine tastings we've tried in SB/Solvang. read more

FANTASTIC WINERY! I love that it's inside the winery itself so you sit amongst the barrels of wine and it's nice and cool inside. I went for my birthday and they gave me and my boyfriend a free tasting of their dessert wine. I usually don't like dessert wine (the only thing I've ever met that's usually too sweet for me) but their dessert wine wasn't too sweet at all. It had a more buttery taste to it. Inside the winery they have all sorts of fun games to play: shuffleboard, chess, backgammon, etc. and the wine was lovely. I got the basic flight ($10) and decided to take home a bottle of their 2010 Carbernet Franc (about $30). We drank the bottle for Thanksgiving and it was lovely paired with white turkey meat and cranberry sauce. read more

I enjoyed the Tasting Room at Carr Winery, most notable were the game boards, shuffle board, and lots of space to sit/stand. The great part about this place is that they sell growlers of wine which is pretty awesome if you're a hardcore wino. Their wines were tasty, but pretty pricey if you're going to pick up a bottle ($30 and up for the good ones). Service was awesome as well. I absolutely adored this cute winery with its wine barrels stacked high to the ceiling in a perfectly chilled room. At Carr, I learned a few things about myself that proved interesting. Apparently my liking for white wine is unwittingly growing the older I get. We tried the Pinot Gris which is fermented in stainless steel barrels which definitely gave it a very clean finish. Then our hostess generously poured us a tasting of their Sauvignon Blanc (not part of the tasting menu) which is fermented in the traditional oak barrels and I fell in love with the rich crispness of the wine. I like the interior of Carr's a lot. I went years ago once and thought it was too dark but unlike Funk Zone wine tasting rooms, it's very spacious and that's good. I tried a Syrah rose--not usually my thing--and it was outstanding But I think it's expensive. If it were more in line with the other wine tasting rooms in town (or had at least a few other choices at the 10 range) I'd give it a 4. It's closer to our condo , though, and you don't have to screw with Funk Zone's notoriously bad parking so I think I will go back, with or without boyfriend. read more

At night, it seemed like a shady area, got a little nervous when trying to find it. But it's definitely worth it once you get there. (and I really don't know anything about that area, so don't shy away from going here) I came on a night they had live music. Sat and drank wine (didn't do a tasting), listened to good, live reggae-ish music, and was with good company. It was at the end of a long day of drinking, so I couldn't honestly tell you how the wine was, I think it was pretty good though. . . If you can go when they have music, do it. I came here over 2 years ago I believe. I went on a wine tour with a friend that sucked until I got to Carr winery. Now this winery is very different than any winery I have been to in the past. First off it looks like it's inside of a barn and I was already ready for the worst. To my surprise it looked like I was inside the cave the moment that I walked inside the BARN. lol The decor was very slick and homey. The people at the bar pouring wines were very knowledgeable and took their time with us to explain the different type of wines they had and the difference. Let me tell you that it was busy that night and for her to take the time to explain and give us a free sample was awesome. They also had a live band that was playing Gipsy kings, Santana, and Mana cover music. Man, it was my type of scene. I look forward to coming back and hanging out there and trying there awesome wines. read more

We had a fantastic host who gave us liberal pours and 3 bonus tastings on top of the standard tasting. This place is stacked. Good everything: service, wine, atmosphere, value. I left with a bottle of the Cab Franc and the Harvest Girl Syrah. This is in a hip little quiet neighborhood of Santa Barbara off the beaten path. Highly recommend an evening tasting here followed by a dinner at Arnoldi's Cafe two blocks away. read more

Came here with my boyfriend a few weeks ago while visiting Santa Barbara for the first time. Needless to say, we fell in love with this place. It has a very unique, intimate ambiance and the staff is incredibly sweet, personable and knowledgable. THIS PLACE IS SO AWESOME. We walked in and it was calm, air conditioned, and very welcoming. The wines are amazing, the CrossHair cab franc was awesome and totally what I was looking for. Tastings are fairly priced: $15 for five of their standard, more entry level wines, and $20 for their specialty wines. They do 2-for-1 tasting with the Axxess card as well. Ren helped us out and she was so awesome. She had her own twist on the order of the tastings and showed us a map of all the wineries that the owner is involved with in the greater Santa Barbara area. She not only possessed extensive knowledge on the wines, but understood that we weren't wine experts and talked us through what we were tasting and what we liked. She really defined the experience for us and I'm so glad that she was there when we came. Their playlist was also awesome, with lots of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. They also have plans to put a fire pit outside and maybe expand, which would be awesome. Some might say that a downside to this place is a little further from all the other wine spots nearby, but I don't mind because it's walking distance from my house. It just means that you're in a calmer, less hectic environment, so make the trip out here and enjoy! read more

Such a hole in the wall find! I didn't expect much walking into this little warehouse, but the inside was so unique! Barrels everywhere, two stories of tasting areas with plenty of seating, the coolest rustic decor, and a few dogs accompanying their owners. What a lovely little reminder of why I love this city - all the hidden treasures! My friends and I played shuffleboard while tasting at 2-for-1 prices with a SB Axxess Card. Good wines, nothing great. Large tasting bar & huge room, so you can wander around. Some chairs & game tables to hang out at. Dog friendly (seems like every tasting room has a dog now!) - a couple of ladies with their well-behaved dogs were hanging out & enjoying a wine flight. You could buy wines by the glass, flights, and growlers? I would go back with some girlfriends & kick back for awhile... Limited parking in front, so I would park elsewhere & walk here. read more

Absolutely fantastic place to spend a few hours. How many wineries do you know that have leather cusion booths and shuffle board. Great Pinot noirs and a really inviting atmosphere. It's a beautiful place with incredible photography and handmade jewelry pieces from various local people. I adore places like this one, where they support local art (in any form). Been here before and had great service. Enjoyed the wine and service. Came in today sat down and no one came to serve us for a good 5-10 minutes. At that point we left. A group of 5 came in right after us and were served as we sat and didn't even have glasses in front of us. Hopefully they get a better handle on their service as the wine is good...service seems to be lacking. read more

This place is worth a visit to anyone that lives or passing through santa barbara. For a tasting fee of $10 you get a great selection of wine-from a crisp pinot grigio to a decedent cab franc. The tasting fee is well worth it for the number of wines they pour. The tasting room is in a large barrel room that has a very peaceful atmosphere. The staff is very nice and knowledgeable.
