We enjoyed dinner here last week. A nice rural setting - watching horses and colts play in the fenced area right outside the restaurant as we dined. Very good menu, food prepared to a high standard. Service was attentive, if a bit rushed. Owner and staff were all friendly and engaged. We had escargot, lamb, and fish - all quite good. Modest but solid wine list. Our only downside was that on the four state trip we were making, this was the only restaurant we visited in which the staff did not wear COVID masks. We understood they all had shots, but it is still reasonable, and in the staff's health and safety interest, for them to remain masked, at least for a couple of more months. This is also the CDC recommendation for such businesses. We were a bit uncomfortable due to the lack of staff masks; otherwise a fine place to dine. read more

Our visit was a pretty mixed bag. It started with a call ahead to inquire about outside seating. We take COVID seriously and avoid dining inside. Luckily, they said there was outside seating and reserved us a table for "outside at 8:30". Upon arriving, we had to venture deep into the restaurant to find a maître d', who was the person we spoke to on the phone. He greeted us from about 20 feet away, and loudly said that we should take off our masks, or we'll scare the other diners. We declined, saying that we'd rather exercise caution. He sat us at the most distant table, noting that it was so we could be "cautious." The table, though away from other diners, was NOT outside seating, as the same gentleman had confirmed for us on the phone when he made our reservation. When we asked about this, he said, that they didn't have outside seating "this late." At this point, it's worth pointing out that none of the staff had masks, and the only other masks I saw were another couple seated similarly distant as we were. The rest of the diners were seated closely and with no masks. We opted to stay for our meal, as there weren't really any other options that we could try after 8:30 in town, and the restaurant didn't seem to have commercial air handlers that increase the spread of covid. We masked up any time a server came by, though that protected them far more than us. All told, we're severely disappointed at the laissez-faire attitude toward covid, but it is a restaurant, so I may as well discuss the food and service, as well. First, our waitress was wonderful. Zero complaints. As for the food... I had the filet mignon and my wife had the sea scallops. And both were fantastic, if uninspiring. All the food seems to be focused on a classic idea of fine dining, and executes that vision extremely well. The downside to this is that there's nothing surprising, unique, or innovative. The main portion of the entrée is fresh and cooked to perfection. Unfortunately, any sides or accompaniments are not given any such care or attention. The white wine sauce that came with my wife's scallops, we were informed, was purchased, not made in-house. My steak, meanwhile, came with mashed potatoes, carrots and green beans. The mashed potatoes tasted as if they may have been made in-house, but the carrots and green beans were both bland and almost certainly came frozen. The filet itself was a decent size, decently seasoned and cooked utterly to perfection. It was one of the most tender and delicious pieces of steak I've had in some time, and the only thing keeping this review above 2 stars. It would have been nice to see the sides given the same level of attention as the mains. And another word about the maître d'... he seemed as if he may be the owner of the restaurant. He was incredibly friendly and attentive and seemed to have a great rapport with many of the guests, some of whom seemed to be regulars. He did have some strange issues with social boundaries, though... stopping to ask my wife about her ancestry and saying that she looked Russian or Romanian. It was an ever-so-slightly uncomfortable conversation. At the end of the meal, he insisted that he take photos of us (he did this with the other mask-wearing couple, as well) ... and it seemed as if it were because he thought we'd want to remember this oh-so-special meal for a long time. He also joked that he'd take a picture of us in our masks "for halloween." If I were to visit this restaurant outside of Covid-times, I think I'd still give it three stars, due to the lack of care for any food that wasn't a main dish, and the invasive questioning. read more

This restaurant is amazing! The best hidden gem in Pine Mountain, GA. Well worth the little drive from Atlanta. Since discovering this place, I come quite often. The filet is the best I have anywhere in the world and at a fraction of what you would expect for similar quality and size. Delicious! I have yet to have anything on the menu less than superb. We went to Carriage & Horses last night. This was an unusual but wonderful experience. It felt like we were eating in someone's home. The service couldn't have been better. We had hot, wonderful bread on the table within 2 minutes of sitting down. My husband and I shared the shrimp cocktail, it was great. My husband ordered the filet mignon. He said it was better than Bones. That's really saying something for him, as he is a steak lover. My friend and I both ordered the trout, which was the special and was grilled. Excellent. My friends husband ordered the ribeye. He didn't want to share a bite! Both men were hesitant to have the sauce that came with the steak, but they were both mopping up that sauce with the extra bread that appeared on our table. We got a dessert to share. Also wonderful. What an amazing place! My husband arrived to this country style home on a two laned roadway outside of Pine Mountain and warmly greeted by Dagher. Dagher has been here and operated it for 28 years. He personally took care of us and ensured we tried his amazing out of the oven bread and high quality butter. We have not had bread and butter for 5 years, but we trusted what he said-it was melt in your mouth, both the bread and the butter. He opened two bottles of red for us to see which we liked better. We had the crab cake with large chunks of fresh crab and crunchy exterior and the shrimp cocktail, both did not last long. Our entrees were the pork shank with an amazing veal sauce and the lamb shank with a beef based broth, each was licking the plate worthy. We were so full, that desert was not an option. Delicious food and incredibly personable service! My husband had the lamb shank (one of their signature dishes) and I had the filet and lobster. My filet was so tender and well seasoned. His lamb was so tender he didn't need a knife! Each meal came with a salad, bread and three vegetables! We were so full but had to order the caramel pecan fudge brownie as well! I took my wife there for our 20th anniversary. Due to COVID, there were only a handful of other people dining there. We were welcomed by the owner and his daughter, who spent the next couple of hours bending over backward to make our evening extra special. The owner is as charming as can be and treated us like royalty. The restaurant is a beautiful farmhouse with tons of history. We didn't meet the chef (though I've no doubt the owner would have brought him out had we asked), but the chef prepared delicious dishes (we had the lamb and filet). Our family of seven made a reservation and Daghar, the owner and proprietor, called us to confirm. He welcomed us and made us feel right at home. As my elderly father made his way into the restaurant in his wheelchair, with our family group of 10, the host issues him this greeting: "Oh, Jesus Christ!" We had a reservation, for which we were on time. But apparently he's never seen an elderly man before. We were led through a front dining room with an empty table for 10 (why wasn't this spot offered?), through a small bar and through the main dining room before arriving at our designated table, which my dad maneuvered as best he could. We were left on our own to move chairs and get him where they told us to go. Next, the house was out of 3 of the 5 wines ordered, 2 of 3 beers, 2 of 3 sparkling waters and several liquors. Um, that's not reasonable. We got baskets of hot from the oven rolls (frozen dough) which were fine but came with frozen pats of butter. That's just lazy. Apparently whatever the owner tells you to order is all you can really count on being available. The proteins were fine -- trout, beef, pork -- but the sides and sauces were dismal. Frozen 5-way mixed with frozen green beans and reconstituted sauces. Eek! No one could tell us anything about the sourcing of our $25-38 meat items. Again, lazy. The desserts, much hyped, were middle quality frozen factory-made and, again, served very cold. This place is an experience best left to locals, with whom the staff have relationships, and those people rave endlessly about how great everything is here. We weren't treated very well for our $750 check in a dining room where 6 other people were eating. And that greeting on the way in? Inexcusable. Not that any apology was offered. read more

Based on all of the fantastic Yelp reviews, we decided we had to try Carriage & Horses- we were not disappointed at all. Great place, great food and great Owner, Daghar! We were only staying two nights in Pine Mountain and we went to C&H both nights. We enjoyed the filet and lamb shank and on the second night the wife called to make our reservation - a must- and she spoke to Daghar. She asked if there were any chicken specials - none on the menu- and Daghar said he would make one special for her! Now that is service. The other great memory was the wine selection. Daghar opened about 6 bottles on our first visit and he let us try each one until we settled in on a Nero D'Avilo 2012 for only $10! If you do go to C&H make sure you engage Daghar. Reservations are a MUST! I called two days ahead and made early reservations for four people for my parents' 54th anniversary. The owner greeted us at the door and waited on us for the entire meal, turning away all day-of reservations. It was a very special dinner, and we really appreciated the personal touch and exceptional food. We started with escargot and some Italian wine. Mind you, my father does not drink alcohol at all...ever,...but he had TWO glasses of the wine. The side salads and dinner bread were so good!
