A short walk from our hotel and an easy online reservation ensured we had a good start at Carson Kitchen. We were immediately seated at the counter which was a great place to sit. We were able to watch the activities in the kitchen and even chat with one of the chefs. Since it was late after a long day of travel, we opted to split a few options. We chose the short ribs for our entree and the Mac and cheese and warm spinach salad as our sides. The short ribs were cooked medium and were very tasty. The Mac and cheese had a nice crisp to the top. The spinach salad was fresh, cool spinach topped with a warm mixture of veggies. Very tasty. The amount of food was perfect. The staff was very helpful to us in navigating the menu. We watched chef Amati make these beautiful deviled eggs and commented on his artistry. He was so kind to make one for my husband. I came here last weekend with a couple of coworkers after hearing some solid recommendations about this place. It wasn't super crowded when we arrived, though we'd made a reservation just to be safe. The ambiance is cozy and slightly upscale without being stuffy -- dim lighting, rustic wood tables, and a soft playlist of old-school jazz playing in the background. I liked the vibe immediately. We decided to start with a few appetizers to share because, honestly, everything on the menu sounded tempting. We ordered the tempura green beans, hot dog burnt ends, and spicy Korean-style wings. The tempura green beans were hands down my favorite out of the apps. Lightly battered, crispy without being greasy, and perfectly seasoned. They came with a creamy dipping sauce that added a little tangy kick. The hot dog burnt ends, on the other hand, were... interesting. I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered them, and I still don't know how I feel about them. They were smoky and drenched in this thick, sweet BBQ sauce that was actually pretty good, but the texture threw me off a little. Not bad, just... unexpected. The Korean wings, however, were incredible. Perfectly crispy skin, sticky spicy-sweet glaze, with a touch of heat that lingered just enough to make you want another bite. For our main courses, we went all out and shared a few different plates so we could each try a little bit of everything. We got the beet salad, braised short rib, New York strip, truffle mac 'n cheese, and wild mushroom risotto. The beet salad was so fresh -- roasted beets with arugula, goat cheese, candied pecans, and a bright vinaigrette that was both tart and subtly sweet. It was a perfect palate cleanser before digging into the richer dishes. The short rib was fall-off-the-bone tender, sitting on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes with this insanely flavorful red wine reduction. Every bite melted in my mouth. The New York strip was cooked medium rare, exactly how I like it, with a perfect sear on the outside. It came with roasted garlic cloves and a side of house-made steak sauce that, honestly, wasn't even necessary because the meat was so flavorful on its own. Now, the truffle mac 'n cheese deserves its own paragraph. It was unbelievably creamy, the kind of dish that makes you close your eyes for a second after the first bite. The truffle wasn't overpowering, just a subtle earthy note that paired beautifully with the gooey cheese sauce and perfectly cooked pasta. I wish I didn't have to share it, if I'm being honest. The wild mushroom risotto was equally outstanding. Rich, savory, with perfectly cooked rice that was neither too soft nor too firm. It had a hint of white wine and was finished with a generous grating of Parmesan on top. It was one of those dishes where you think you're full but you keep going back for another spoonful. And then came dessert. We were already pretty stuffed but had been told not to skip dessert here, and I'm so glad we listened. We got the doughnut bread pudding and the brownie with bacon ice cream. The bread pudding was warm, soft, and custardy with little crispy edges -- topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that slowly melted into the nooks of the pudding. Absolute heaven. The brownie was thick, rich, and fudgey, served warm with a generous scoop of smoky bacon-infused ice cream. I was skeptical about the bacon ice cream at first, but it actually balanced out the sweetness of the brownie and gave it a really interesting savory note. Easily one of the most memorable desserts I've had in a long time. Service throughout the evening was phenomenal. Our server was friendly, patient, and gave really thoughtful recommendations without being pushy. Drinks were refilled promptly, plates cleared at the right moments, and dessert arrived just when we thought we couldn't eat another bite but somehow found room. All in all, this was an outstanding dining experience from start to finish. Great food, excellent service, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Started the food with the pork belly my wife gave a 7/10 (I was a 6/10) decent meat with a buffalo sauce. Made it solid but not the best pork belly I've ever had. Then got Mac and Cheese and Espresso steak. Mac was different than I saw in the pictures. A white sauce and parm cheese dish 6.5/10. This was the first restaurant I tried while visiting SLC. The ambiance is great and there is a really nice view if you get a seat facing the window of the mountains. The waiter recommended all the items we tried and told us their Mac and cheese was number 1 in SLC so of course we had to try. I was not impressed by the Mac and cheese and would give it a 6/10. I was disappointed in our inaugural visit to Carson Kitchen. I had high hopes, but it fell short. The food pretty tasty and definitely the highlight. The crispy chicken skins were so surprisingly tasty and came out fast. The cocktails were yummy and pretty. The meals were all flavorful. One issue is that it took FOREVER for our table to all get our food. It's like the kitchen cooked them one at a time as they trickled out over the course of about 20 minutes. My own meal was beets and grains and arrived last after everyone else had finished eating. They did comp the last two items and apologized. Another issue was value. The steak came with no sides for like $34. My son said it was just ok and had little flavor. I think a starch on the side would have gone a long way. A pasta dish was like a snack scoop. They were very stingy with the portions, especially considering the prices. I don't think I'd return, even though I did love my drink and beet salad. Disappointed! read more

Disappointing. Carson Kitchen has been on my list a long time because of the good reviews I've read. When I finally went I was surprised to see the place almost completely empty, except for one other patron. The drinks were alright but the menu was kind of limited. I was surprised at the quality of the food - mediocre - but still for a high price. I don't think there was a description of everything on the sandwich I got, the Chip Butty; it just said softshell crab and hp aoli (and nobody could explain to me what hp meant!). I felt mislead, because I was surprised when a tall sandwich with lots of oven fries and a teeny little fried softshell crab came out. I guess I should have known by the name that it would be loaded with fries, it even came with fries on the side but I asked to substitute a salad and I'm so glad I did. The bread was stale and I ate a fry or two but just ended up deconstructing the sandwich to eat the expensive part of it. I think the salad was the best part of the whole meal. I think my partner got the Secret Sunday Chicken sandwich, it was ok, the the bun was stale and he ended up not eating it. The location is great, very large, the street parking is a little difficult. This time around I had something totally different from before, I ordered the Beet Tartare and the Mushroom Flatbread. For most restaurants, I think that consistency and delivery can be difficult, but not for the Carson Kitchen. Ebony nailed both my dishes. I am a sucker for a good beet salad and this was next level! Loved how fun it was making the perfect bite. After cleaning my plate I moved on to the mushroom flatbread. I really liked the levels of flavors on this flatbread. Appetizers were great. I highly recommend the fried green beans. They have a nice light batter and great taste. It's a large serving but you'll find yourself continuously reaching for it through the meal. Mac and cheese was also a stand out. Not too heavy and great flavor. I got to try some of the tatertots and they were good. Friends all seemed to enjoy the burger. I found the risotto light but still filling. I wasn't expecting the flavors but it was still good. We were looking for a local restaurant for our group of 13 to have dinner after our Volleyball tournament at the convention center. We estimated our arrival to be 9:15-9:30 and they close at 10:00, so I called and asked if they would accept our group. I was pleasantly surprised that they said yes. We called when we were on our way and they were so kind and said they were waiting for us. Our server Genevieve could not have been kinder. She explained to us that the portions are family sized and good for sharing and was so patient with our large group. All the food was amazing, so fresh and unique! We are all from out of town, so we really wanted something different and local and Carson Kitchen was an amazing choice. This was a unique experience! I've never been somewhere where most of the menu is intended to be shared. We got to try so many things such as: bacon jam, deviled eggs with caviar, pork belly, tempura green beans, the iron chef burger, their special bacon ice cream and donut bread pudding, and the macaroni. By FAR the bacon jam was the best. Hands down one of the best things I've ever eaten! Our least favorite was the tempura green beans. There just didn't seem to be that much flavor it them. What was really cool though, is that they gave them to us for free! Our waitress just came up and said " do you guys want these? We made extra". That has never happened at any other restaurant before. Their service was also top notch. We brought our 1 year old with us, and all three workers that interacted with us were almost overly concerned about them not having a kids cup for our baby. They then went out of their way to go to the next door restaurant and get a kids cup just for him. That is also something that has never happened at any other restaurant before. Unfortunately they had a cook that didn't show up, so the food took extra long to get to us. Despite this, their excellent service and delicious food made it totally worth it. Fine food served in a beautiful venue. This small-plate New American restaurant is a delicious place to try something new. Although not each dish matched my palette, great care is taken to prepare and serve these beautiful dishes, and most were very, very good. I've included some photos of some of my favorites- the pork belly, chicken thighs, and the glazed donut bread pudding were all spectacular. Although we needed a little coaxing from the staff, my wife loved the mac and cheese dish. It's truly a gourmet take on a kids classic. I'd recommend getting a reservation early at the chef's bar where you can see them make the different dishes, talk to the staff to try favorites and off-menu dishes based on your tastes, and adjust your orders to what you really like. Be careful of ordering too many dishes if you're trying to limit your food budget. As is common with small plate restaurants the total from several plates can add up quickly! read more

This place is an understated establishment. The unassuming location and somewhat bistro decor does not prepare you for the delicious food that comes out of their kitchen. Our server was friendly and attentive and the food came out super fast. We started with grilled oysters which were in their shell topped with Panko and a savory sauce. We also had the duck tacos which were soft and served with a sweet chili sauce. We had the fried chicken skin which came with a dip of fresh honey. Fantastic. Then we ordered the street corn polenta which was a polenta bake shaped like a French toast stick topped with corn and queso and tomatoes and onions. Absolutely delicious. We had the risotto which was warm and filling. Then we ordered the pork meatloaf sandwhich. If you're a fan of meatloaf, this did not disappoint. I would go back and get this to put in my fridge and eat cold. It was that good. The huckleberry soda was a nice change of pace and the Chardonnay was also on point. After a long day's drive from Las Vegas, we arrived for a 7 pm reservation. We were seated immediately and quickly discovered the restaurant was extraordinarily loud, so much so I couldn't have a conversation with my adult daughter who was seated two seats away from me at our round table for 8. Two stars for ambiance. We tried the Crispy Chicken Skins and my family members contorted their faces after a single bite. I sampled them and quickly agreed it is something I will not order again. 1 star We ordered two flatbreads and they brought out three. We informed them of the error and they said they would comp us the extra one which was nice. However, when the check came out, the third flatbread was on the bill. I brought it up and the waitress quickly corrected it. The turkey burger was very flavorful with unique blend of spices. It tasted as though there was a hint of cloves. Five stars for flavor and originality. My son rated his baked Mac and cheese five stars too. My other two sons rated their flatbreads five stars. The Watermelon and Feta dish was unique and refreshing doused in a vinaigrette dressing and garnished with mint. The accompanying cucumbers were also tasty. Five stars I was pleased that they offered a complimentary Berry Crumble for checking in on Yelp. The service level was three stars. We felt forgotten for several minutes after finishing our meal. We ended up having to flag down someone to get our check. I ended up asking for the Berry Crumble to go since my party was tired of waiting. They were out of Berry Crumble but provided a substitute. The food was pretty good but the noise level was a huge damper on the experience. What we had hoped would be a joyful family reunion with shared conversation ended up being something less than that.
