So disappointed with this place. Went with my BF and a friend. Ordered Pozole, a breakfast burrito, Huevos Rancheros, and a Chile relleno. HORRIBLE. ZERO FLAVOR. The same sauce for the Huevos Rancheros was the same sauce for the Chile relleno. Very bland. The breakfast burrito was super dry, had no salsa in it. The Pazole too had zero flavor. Even with the onions and cilantro. The waitress was very attentive, and that was the ONLY good thing about this experience. Will not be coming back. Taco bell had better flavored food. Too bad. Who can go wrong with cheese enchiladas and a burrito. I thought this would be authentic Mexican food but instead I got worse than chipotle tasting food. Horrible taste. The only thing that was good was the salsa. Price was a little high for both things. read more

Kay, first things first IT IS CASH ONLY. but dont let that stop ya! We were craving Mexican food and we hit the jackpot! Casa Calderon is a super charming, family owned (i think) restaurant with amazing food and service. The seating is super spacious; we sat at one of the very cushy booths. We were given fresh salsa and tortilla chips right away. The salsa was super fresh, and mild with a nice lil kick. Chips were thick and not greasy nor overly salty (A+). At first we were going to get the green chile BUT the waiter told us that was actually the one item that he doesn't recommend to customers, because their sauce is different and they shred their pork and chicken together. So on his recommendation we ended sharing the #1 Especial with tamale, chile relleno, beef taco, enchilada and albondigas soup AND he helped us out by letting us get a half size carne asada wet burrito.... So the food is super bomb! Soup is mad flavorful with lots of celery and thick tender cuts of carrot, and eating the meatballs was like a having a spice explosion in your mouth. Taco came with a ton of lettuce in very crunchy shell, enchilada and beana and rice and all was good but the chile relleno stood out the most on that #1 plate, lots of gooey cheesy goodness. Ive been living in San Gabriel pretty much my Whole life.. always knew about this place, but for whatever reason just never came to try it, Until yesterday that is. The staff was really friendly, chips and salsa was amazing, And definitely fresh. I had the Carne Asada wet burrito with an Horchata. Burrito had the taste of a fresh homemade burrito. The Horchata reminded me of my grandmas... Overall it was a very satisfying experience, and i was very surprised how it was pretty empty inside. I regret not coming here sooner, but will definitely be coming here more often being that it's down the street! read more

I love this place but I know what it is, American Tex-Mex! If you're expecting authentic Mexican food, don't go here. It's just delicious Mexican style home made food here? I've only gotten to go orders with friends so I do not know too much about dining here. They're closed Mondays and Tuesdays and for a period between lunch and dinner. They do custom orders as everything is just cooked in the kitchen according to recipes that seem to have been passed down in their family. The service is great, they're CASH ONLY but they trusted my check when I didn't have enough cash once- they just don't take card. I like their tacos, burritos, and taquitos which all seem to be handmade and fried. Their seasoned ground beef is delicious. It can get greasy but when you come here you're in the mood for that. Always have driven past this restaurant but never stopped until the pandemic started. I was quickly greeted by the host and they were very friendly. We had not been to Casa Calderon for several years (The Pandemic), but my husband Charlie suggested we head on over a few weeks ago. THE FOOD WAS FANTASTIC!! Charlie had the beef taco combination plate and LOVED IT! I saw they had mashed potato tacos, and since I love potatoes, I thought I would give it a try. OMG!!! They were DELICIOUS. The restuarant offers way EXPENSIVE mexican food. Seriously, a cheese enchilda and a taco plate (with rice, beans, soup or salad) is $14.50. You can go to East L.A., Bell Gardens, heck even Pico Rivera and get the same thing for way CHEAPER. It seems as though they cater to white folks. Like what can we make for them and slap on a high price on it. Because they know they like Mexican food. Also the food is alright. Nothing to write home about and they go heavy on the cheese. The ONLY thing thats good about this place is there chips & salsa. Their menu is confusing. Their burritos don't come with rice in them, that's like an $3.00 extra charge. Old school restaurant since 1963. I've been wanting to come here for a long time, we finally ate dinner on a Saturday night. The warm chips and salsa were a hit but I wish the salsa would've been a bit more spicy. The Tony's special plate was good and the tortillas were nice and fresh tasting. This is my favorite restaurant of all time. It feels like home here. Maybe it's because the owner is the sweetest lady you'll ever meet. Maybe it's because the food is delicious, reliable and comforting every time. Regardless, this is the only place I ever want to eat. They start you off with fresh, in house salsa and chips. I always order a beer to go with the chips and salsa and then the Ginny burrito, adding rice to the inside. Portions are big enough that I always have almost half my burrito for lunch the next day. I'm completely addicted to the pasilla sauce that the burrito is smothered in. Mmmmmmmm. They are cash only so come prepared. The El Dorado is just a big burrito made with taco meat ground beef. It was mild tasting, just ok. I've noticed before that the food here is not that authentic or spicy tasting. Maybe they keep it that way for the clientele in N San Gabriel. read more

First - FYI, they now TAKE CREDIT AND DEBIT CARDS. In a world of chain restaurants and processed food, it was a real treat to come here and have GOOD Mexican food from family recipes. The chips and salsa were the best and the chicken soup was really good. The atmosphere is funky and unique in this old building. I do wish they had a full bar. Tap beer would be good too.
