This is one of my favorites spots in Berkeley! The food here is AMAZING. One of the best burritos I've ever had. Their bakery is also incredibly tasty. The sangria is super fresh too, and cheap! Met up with the cousins for lunch at CL on Saturday. There is some seating inside and outside in the front. Free street parking on the side street. I ordered the $2.30 tacos which came with green sauce, onions: Carne: 2.5/5 meat was dry Carnitas: 4/5 good texture and flavor, not too salty Barbacoa: 5/5 great flavor! So happy to find a Mexican Bakery in Berkeley! I went in expecting the traditional sweet bread that is the more dense variety as opposed to the lighter bread with the pink or white sugar on top, they did have this kind, but not the denser one. I spent a lot of time looking at each pastry guessing what they might taste like and decided on a large slice of dark bread with frosting looking stuff on top and a dense looking pudding bread with raisens. I also ordered a caffe latte. Both breads were delicious. The one with frosting is actually a butter/sugar concotion that is very tasty and creamy. The bread pudding is very dense, even heavy, and has a really unique taste. I have never seen this variety at a Mexican bakery before. The helpful lady behind the counter told me they mix pudding and many types of sweet bread to make it. The caffe latte wasnt too tasty, but Im not a huge fan of non sweetend lattes and only got it to counter the sweetness in the breads. Everything else in there looked amazing. I cant wait to go back and try their veggie burrito and nachos. They have fresh fruit cups and agua fresca that looked amazing. Everything seems fresh and well done. Truly a little gem in Berkeley. This place has a little bit of everything. Coffee, delicious Mexican baked goods, GREAT tacos, burritos, and Tortas, and fresh carrot/orange juice. Best of all, they're open late for those, like me, might feel like a little dessert and coffee but don't want to be seated for dessert or want something low key. Recommended: Sweet empanadas, especially the custard or pineapple with coffee. The pound cake (with coffee) is good too. Carnitas Torta is HIGHLY recommended. Overall a nice neighborhood spot. Not really for a sit down dinner. More like a taqueria with baked goods, but you can always take out dinner and sweet bread to devour when you get home. read more

Casa Latina used to have some of the best tamales in town. Flavorful soft masa and pork with delicious recado wrapped in banana leaves. They were divine tasting! We went to pick up some tamales for Thanksgiving and were so disappointed. The tamales now are so dry, we couldn't eat them. The masa is so dry it crumbles. There was almost no sauce and very little filling. We bought $81 of tamales and ended up throwing them out. read more

I visited this place on Tuesday around 7pm. It's a tiny place! You walk in. There are a few mexican bread displays, you can pick some out on a self-serve tray and/or order your food & drink. I really wanted to try a torta, but I decided to try the tamales plate with one green chicken tamale and one red beef tamale. They were decent. The rice and beans were decent too. My SO had a burrito and he liked this place more than Taqueria Talavera. (But I disagree). I also ordered a pineapple aqua fresca. It was a little watery but still good. We were too full for bread. Maybe next time :) Ps- when we left around 8pm all the shady characters came out! The bums and creepers. I wasn't comfortable walking back to my car (luckily I was with someone). So please go when it's still light outside or have a friend! Pps- I originally had a window seat until some guy started smoking outside. We moved into the neighborhood a month ago and have been there four times. Great for parents, friends, dates. Construction guys get their breakfast here in the mornings. Amazing burritos, pozole and tamales. Their menu is enormous. I keep an eye on the pan dulce. read more

I really like that it's a panaderia-taqueria. It's like the Mexican equivalent of those crazy donut shop/Chinese take-out hybrids. I've tried seven of the Berkeley-area taquerias, and this place has the best carne asado super burritos, by far. I'm most impressed by their guacamole -- it tasted richer than guacamoles in other Mexican eateries, since it actually had small chunks of avocado in them. It's slightly pricier ($7) than the meat-rice-cheese-salsa-guac-cream burritos at other places, but I think it's worth it. The only complaint I'd have is that they could work on distributing the various components in the burrito better. I know it's a pet peeve for some of you to have a mouthful of rice followed by a mouthful of meat, so it's something to keep in mind, I suppose. Their $4 tostadas are also quite impressive, since what you get is a huge mound of lettuce and meat. However, avoid ordering it to-go since the tortilla beneath that mound gets soggy really, really fast. read more

Moving away from San Jose and its awesome choices for Mexican food has been sad indeed, but luckily I moved into a place that is walking distance from this awesome bakery. I like to go in and experiment with the different breads and pastries. I can safely say that I have never been disappointed in any choice I have made. The conchas are fluffy and delicious! I have also tried the tostada and torta. The tostada was delicious and stacked high with meat, lettuce, crema, queso, etc. In my excitement over this, I broke my fork (I couldn't eat it just by hand it was piled with too much food!). Despite the delicious tostada, the torta is my favorite. The meat was juicy and flavorful and the bread was perfect. It was also packed pull of veggies, crema, jalapenos, and more. I'm salivating just thinking about it. Having been spoiled with quality Mexican food all my life (being form Modesto and moving to San Jose) I am wholly impressed by this place. Though it is definitely on the pricy side, it is worth the splurge ever so often! read more

This place was awful. I dont understand why its rated so highly. We tried the shrimp tacos and the fish fajita. None of the food was hot when it arrived. It took 2 minutes for it to be ready (probably microwaved). The fish and shrimp were SOGGY. The service was good, the food not so much. When I moved out of my house, one of the first things I started missing was my mom's homemade, authentic Mexican food. Whenever I want good Mexican food, I drive all the way over here. I don't live too far from here but if you add traffic, it's a hassle to get to. I've been coming here for about 7 years. Everything I've tried is delicious (mole, empanadas, pozole, pan, flautas, etc). The restaurant is cute and clean. You order at the front counter, they give you a number, you find a place to sit and they'll bring you your food. The only reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that there have been a few occasions when they've made mistakes on my order and they don't compensate in any way. Going to this place reminded me how unauthentic this place is. 98% was not Latino which explains the four and a half star rating. They probably don't know any better. Have been enjoying Casa Latina for over 4 years now- and usually love it. This time, our burritos were cold! The beans and some of the carnita and carne asada meat was just barely warm- as if it had been off the heat for a while, but everything else was actually cold to the touch. The cheese that was added was cold and not at all melted! We decided to pack up our burritos and remaining guacamole & head home to warm up our burritos!!! We had to heat up the burritos in a skillet for 20-30 minutes just to get them warm enough to enjoy. The guacamole was excellent as always, but we weren't even given enough tortilla chips for the guacamole (only enough to enjoy barely 2/3rds of the guac) - let alone to have enough chips to enjoy with our burritos. And, we were not offered any pico de gallo or sauces for our food or chips- as none is left out due to the pandemic. The male employee working the counter/FOH was very young and seemed to be new and not fully trained. He gave us our burritos and was unsure of which one was carne asada and which was carnita! He awkwardly came back about 5-10 mins later to ask if we figured out which one was which!? Unfortunately, they were not at all as busy as usual- so it really does not make any sense why we had these problems/mis-steps. (I hope this is not indicative of the experience that we had!!) We will give Casa Latina one more chance to see if we experience the usual excellence that we always did to decide if we will continue being regular patrons! read more

What can I say, I love me good agua that is fresh. Those fresh waters of sandia and orange/carrot rivaled that of jamba juicy. This place is not cheap so if your poor like me come once in a while. Not bad. I liked this place. We went here for dinner. Got a refried bean and cheese burrito. Not the most amazing burrito I've ever had, but it was good compared to the kind Berkeley offers. Usually healthy pinto beans, super bland stuff. Not my cup of tea. Pan dulces I thought were good. Not sure what some of the other yelpers are complaining about on that spectrum. We always get the chicken/verde and the chicken is moist and tasty. The service is friendly and efficient, and the coffee was good (soy cappuccino). In search of Mexican pastries, I came here. After looking at the day's selection, I decided on the cinnamon roll. Glazed with a sugar frosting, it was the most appealing pastry. Though I did tell her that I was going to eat it there, the server heated it up in a paper bag, under a flat grill. With my cup of coffee, I descended into my sugar breakfast. The roll was sweet, though hard to eat. It would have been easier on a plate with a fork. I also like my rolls to be gooey and sticky. This roll was not like that. Tasty yes, but not what I expected. The sugar stuck to the bag after the heating under the press. I will give this place another chance as the other goodies looked good. Their food menu looked good as well. I need to preface this review by stating its prob been upward 5 years since I have left a yelp review. Unfortunately my experience tonight resurrected my review skills. I ordered from CL last week based on positive reviews and it was fine - not great, not terrible, but good enough to re-order from this week. I should have trusted my spidey senses when I placed an order that was going to be ready for delivery less than half an hr later - this couldn't be fresh food. When my order arrived and I dived in (because... hangry) I noted right away this was absolutely NOT fresh food. I got the flautas con polo and it was clear from the first bite that this was made ahead of time by at least 1 day - actually it was visually clear as I can tell when something wrapped in a corn tortilla has been refried ad nauseum (I am Puerto Rican, I know abt first day food, second day re-frying etc). It was also slathered in "guacamole and sour cream" which I paid extra for - the guac tasted like the pre-made stuff you buy in plastic packages. I also ordered tres leche cake and it was pretty nasty. My boyfriend (who really enjoyed the burrito he ordered last week) let me know the meat in his burrito tasted a bit off and not as fresh. While I realize things happen and not everything is perfect, I expect that when I pay upward $70 for a delivery of 3 friggin items that my food would at least be fresh. Also, given that shelter in place is hard on restaurants, one would think that an eatery would be mindful around ya know, not serving old @ss food in order to continue to make a profit. Am I salty? You bet! Don't try to get over on me, I am a food connoisseur. And CL, don't even try to leave a generic reply of "so sorry you weren't happy with your order" - I am not having it. The upshot? Went here for lunch with my boyfriend and ordered the chicken flautas while he ordered the enchiladas verdes. The place is super casual with a "sit yourself" approach. The ladies at the counter were really nice and helpful. The chicken flautas were way too dry even when it had crema and cheese on top and red sauce. It was just way too dry for me. However, the enchiladas were delicious! The carnitas was perfectly seasoned and so juicy! I know what to order next time. We also ordered a horchata and that was delicious as well! I love horchata so I get very picky about it how it tastes. This place did it good! I just know now not to order the chicken flautas anymore but will definitely try others on the menu! read more

Some of the best authentic Mexican food in the east bay. I moved up here from Santa Barbara where they have some truly amazing Mexican food, so finding this place has been a relief. They have some damn good nachos with or without meat, their Tacos and Tamales are great too. My personal favorite, the Carne Asada Burrito, makes it hard to pick anything else though. The prices are also quite reasonable with everything being between $4 - $7. They even have coffee, espresso, tasty hot chocolate and a good breakfast burrito. Omg, I've been wanting to come to this place FOREVER and am soooo glad I finally did! I had the carne asada quesadilla in a spinach tortilla. Yummo! The quesadilla is served with pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. Also tasted the al pastor tacos, which were tasty! According to their menu, all their meats are baked, which you can really taste the difference! Their prices are reasonable and their servings are just right. You order at the counter and then take a seat to wait for your food. The place is pretty small, with only about 3 tables of 2-3 chairs each. But if you're eating in, you'll get to enjoy the quote of the day on the little chalk board they have. I'm only bummed bc I didn't get to try their pastries/pan dulce! (I had a box of pastries from Mazetti's in Pacifica waiting for me in the car.) Instead, I took a Mexican hot chocolate to eat with my cream puff -AMAZING! I can't wait to go back. When we first moved to Berkeley, we tried Casa Latina and we weren't impressed. The nachos were mediocre and my husband didn't like his burrito. Whenever we wanted good Mexican food, we'd just walk over to La Mission. Fast forward three years to today. It was recently renovated and I can't say for sure but the menu seems different. I found out they are owned by the same people who own La Mission. I'm not sure that's always been the case though. In any case, they have some delicious *Mexican* tacos and tonight we got a torta and tostada that was pretty damn good. We'll be back! read more
