It's a bit hard to hear with a large group of 8-10 tables so be prepared for a large room with high ceilings and tile. This is an authentic Mexican restaurant! The food and service is chefs kiss! The options of food are fitting to all people even if you have allergies or don't eat certain things. The outside is a bit misleading but only because the whole restaurant is getting renovated which brings this down to a four star rating. The inside is also being renovated but is looking better than the outside. We were visiting San Antonio and found this place close to the hotel. We popped in on a Monday night. We were greeted immediately by the host/waiter/bartender/bus person. There were only a few customers in the restaurant. It had an old Mexican restaurant feel. There were some odd Christmas decorations up. We sat at the bar. The waiter brought over warm chips and salsa. The chips were light and crispy. Salsa was decent. I ordered a skinny Margarita. It was a little weird. There were a bunch of mixers sitting open on the back bar. I feel like they probably should have been refrigerated, but not sure. The drink had tequila sweet and sour and some orange juice. It had no rim and very little ice. He set it down and said try it, I think I put too much orange juice in it???? He did offer to remake it, but I declined. It wasn't awesome, but weird for a Mexican place to not have a decent Marg. The star was the chicken ranchero. The grilled chicken was perfect and the onions, tomatoes, and peppers covering it had a good kick. Overall a decent experience. We were attending a conference and the bartender at Marriott recommended for us to come try this place. He gave us a card with his name written on it to give to the restaurant. Should have already spotted the red flag from that. This place is basically a mom and pop Taco Bell. Hard pass and want to warn you that it's not worth the drive. So disappointed when we should have went with it gut instinct, especially with the distance from the hotel. We ordered tacos, beef enchiladas and carne guisada, it all literally came out in 10 minutes and the meat had the goopy consistency of taco bell meat. The only thing that was decent was the chips and salad that came at the beginning of the meal. Ate lunch today and the food was just regular Mexican food. The lemonade was very good along with the fresh warm chips and warm salsa - very good! I do have to say the restaurant is nicely laid out and decorated. There is a nice area for a friend's dine-in gathering on the left side of the restaurant just walking in. I did not see any servers, it was about 4pm but the person who served our meals was very nice. Again, the restaurant is a very nice setting for dining. Humble and simple place, kept clean and tidy. They were very accomodating to my modification requests and I really liked my meal. I had cheese enchildas with ranchero sauce and double rice. I love onions on my cheese enchildas and they accomodated my request, there were both diced onions inside with the cheese and chopped onions bathed in the ranchero sauce. The style is sort of Monterrey norteno in my opinion. The employees were very attentive, including the host who was watching the tables to make sure people had refills and weren't waiting long to get their check. The complimentary chips are thin and crispy and the salsa is spicy with chunks of jalapeno and tomato, if you like Pace salsa, this will satisfy you. That is not meant as an insult because I like Pace salsa, but not the picante sauce. The glasses for tea are super big, but they sell soda by the bottle so no free refills for soda, just the tea. We stopped by for a quick lunch. They have some strange decorations like they left up Christmas decorations and tried to make them easter with streamers. We were seated quickly. The table was set for two, but we had our toddler with us and they didn't give him any utensils or a plate. I ordered the mixed fajitas while my husband got a tamale combo. The food was hot, but these are the weirdest fajitas I've ever had. Half the plate was covered in grilled vegetables such as carrots and zucchini. I didn't mind that, but it just left less room to add meat. It also came with refried beans, rice and a little dab of guacamole. I had to keep asking for utensils and plates for my toddler. The host was actually very nice and gave my child a fruit snack on the way out. Overall, the food was fine, but nothing super special. Sought it out because to me Tex-Mex is judged by cheese enchiladas, and they must have chili con carne on them. It was the way I was reared in Waco. Most cheese enchiladas in San Antonio are covered in red "chili gravy" goo...not to my liking. Enchiladas with chili are hard to find south of Austin, so, when I read Casa Sol featured them, I gave them a try. The building is good size and clean. The fare is standard Tex-Mex, which is my preference. The service was crisp and courteous. While the cheese enchiladas came covered in their chili con carne, I would give them just a solid "B." The chili was a bit disappointing in that it was too thin and not heavily flavorful...just lacking that final something of cooked down real chili. The accompanying rice, beans (very good), crispy taco were up to par, but when I rolled some rice & beans in my soft corn tortillas, I missed solid chili to bring it off. Mediocre food but not bad. 2 stars for this place because they give you a main menu and lunch menu (if you go during lunch hours) however they charged us for full priced when we were there. Our waitress had disappeared for some time so we had to ask and confront another worker about it; she said that they have a "system issue" and can't honor the lunch price. My thought was why serve the menu? You're misleading and tricking customers from the start. She didn't seem apologetic at all and wanted to offer me a discount. My thing was not to get a discount, I'll pay for the food I ordered but I was bothered why they tried to charge more for something when that wasn't present up front? I was craving a chimichanga and this was one of the places that popped up when I started my search. Came in on a Friday afternoon. COVID- staff was wearing masks and hand sanitizer was provided. SERVICE- when we walked in there wasn't anyone to greet us so we didn't know whether or not to seat ourselves. The salsa was "fresh & chunky" (my friend's words after the first bite) which you don't get nowadays with most restaurants. I ordered the chimichanga and my friend had the chicken flautas. My chimichanga was fried to perfection and tasted so good- only thing I didn't like was that there were more refried beans than beef in it & I could've done without it. The environment was relaxing when I arrived around 2:30 PM on a Friday, and I was promptly seated. I was given a lunch menu that stated the lunch specials were available from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM Sunday through Thursday. I opted for the beef enchiladas lunch special, which was listed at $10.99 on the menu. However, upon receiving the receipt, I noticed that the item was priced $2 higher. The cashier and I had a back-and-forth discussion about honoring the menu price since it was different in their system. She had to make a phone call to verify if they could adjust the price, even though it clearly stated $10.99 on their menu. This discrepancy made the experience uncomfortable. As for the food, I would rate the beef enchiladas 3 out of 5 stars, while the rice and beans were excellent at 5 out of 5 stars. However, the service received a lower rating of 2 out of 5 stars due to the pricing issue, the need for clarification and slow service after receiving our food. I honestly have no idea how this place has 4 stars. I don't know if it was taken over and under new management, but my family went there on a Thursday early evening for dinner to celebrate my nephew's art showing for his school. Boy were we surprised. I was brought out something that looked like cheese enchiladas with extremely hard rubbery shrimp in a white sauce that smelled a bit like low tide. I attempted a bite and could not eat it. I didn't even dare the sides. The rice looked hard and dry but honestly didn't dare try it so I can't speak on the taste. My sister in law ordered a burger and we all know it is a burger at a Mexican restaurant however she took a bite and when she opened her burger there was a hair in the middle of the burger. Now, don't get me wrong it wasn't like a little strand that could have come from the table there was one embedded in the patty and some on the cheese I wish I had taken a picture to show. My daughter just ordered a taco and we will just say it was greasy. My wife ordered a salad and even that had brown lettuce and unappealing. So naturally it was inedible. I know you are asking how could this get worse ?!? Well maybe by having a roach scurry around the rim of the tortilla holder. If you have read my reviews before you know I love to give rave reviews but we will just say that stating this place is subpar is a high rating. I know some of you will still go and try it out anyway due to the other reviews which I wish we had some of their experiences. I know I will never go back I would never recommend this place. I advise to go with caution. You may ask well did you tell the manager and yes after we were able to get him to our table he comped the food. He wasn't too receptive to our feedback but hey that is on him. None of us ate our food we still paid for the drinks so we could at least tip the server and then we went across the street and enjoyed some Whataburger. Salsa tasted fresh, but not a ton of flavor. There was a bit of a kick to it though. I had the guisada, it tasted heavy on the tomato sauce or whatever spice was used. It tasted acidic, but the meat was tender. The kids menu was a bit limited. However, our server was very nice. I could not find this restaurant on Yelp even though it has been in the same location for over 20 years. There is one simple reason why this Restaurant is a must-visit in SATX: IT HAS THE BEST CHIPS AND SALSA IN THE UNITED STATES!!! I was statione in San Antonio 1999-2004 and found this gem then, then came in 2022 and took my family here with that promise, and after 18 years, it did not disappoint.
