When we walked in the atmosphere was reminiscent of Cabo San Lucas off to a good start! Fresh (and hot) chips and salsa with excellent margaritas to set the mood. WARNING - I seriously believe this restaurant could make you sick. We have eaten there several times and about half the time the food is no more than barely edible. The other half of the time the food is objectively bad. And tonight the food will very likely make us SICK. The steak smelled horrendous. Why did we eat even a single bite of it? Good question. I literally thought it was the cheese that might have smelled pungent, but after consuming one of the three tostadas and separating out the ingredients, it was most definitely the meat. It smelled and tasted spoiled. 3 of our party of 7 people had some steak, but left most of their food on the plate. When the young waitress came to give us our check she asked, and we just said we wanted to pay and leave - no boxes. When she probed a little further I mentioned the meat was really bad and she said, "I smelled and tasted it too, and thought it was off, but my manager said to take the food out and ask how it was. If you didn't complain, it was fine" Are you $%&# kidding me?! Food is an intimate thing. You're consuming something. This just felt like a major violation of trust, and to be honest, I suspect something is very wrong with how this kitchen is managed. Ordered carry out, which we've done many times before. Picked up order, not to be eaten until much later. After scrutinizing packaging an hour later, discovered we were given the wrong order. Called business to advise of their mistake and asked them to pick up wrong order and deliver correct order. I was informed they don't do that. We could return, with receipt, and they could rectify. I found myself in Hartford. The reasons are not important or interesting in the least. Upon entering this sleepy town, I expected a drive in and drive out experience. Low and behold, I see a brightly colored, stucco type building in my peripheral vision. VVRRRRRRRRRRRRP... sharp turn to the left. This must be a latin dining establishment I have never seen or heard of, must try. Upon entering, our party was pleasantly greeted. We chose a high-top in the bar area. Chips and salsa and waters were brought immediately with a warm, curteous smile. Lunch menu was available. I sometimes like to oder off of the dinner menu at lunch so I have dinner in the fridge. Being I had never been here, I thought, just go with lunch. I ordered the Ensalada De La Casa. This had to have been the dinner salad and was generously priced. My meal included a huge grilled sliced chicken breast, a full tomato of wedges, a couple different lettuces and about a whole avocado. The avocado dressing came on the side in a generous serving bowl, delish! Lesson learned. You never know when a treasure is going to be discovered. read more

Great new discovery when I was in Hartford! I've been twice for lunch and enjoyed both experiences. Prompt service and a taco salad that is da bomb! Wide open menu that covers the standard mex dishes and ones that are on the more creative side. I wish their salsa was spicier. If you're one that prefers mild then you'll enjoy. Good environment with daily specials. Overall, I will hit up this place every time I'm in Hartford. Reasonable lunch prices and great food make this place one to bookmark. read more

Wife ordered her burrito without tomatoes. Said it twice and waiter confirmed. When she got her burrito it was filled with tomatoes. I had chicken chimichanga. Had an aftertaste I couldn't initially place. Like something burnt. Realized it was from deep frying in very old oil. I ordered a medium margarita at $8 in the menu. When I got bill, I was charged $9. When k brought it to the attention of the person taking my money, he said the prices went up and the waiter is supposed to tell the tables. He said it was the waiter's fault, but when I got my receipt, still charged $9. Food was average. Wouldn't go out of my way to eat here and will not go back again. read more

I have been to this locations a few times but every time I've visited everything has been great from the food to the atmosphere to the service. I usually go to their location in West Bend which is equally as good. I love Mexican food. I have visited many Mexican restaurants so I am particularly picky about my Mexican food. All I can say is that this place has always surpassed my expectations. Their food is always fresh. You can tell they make all of their salsas, rice, beans from scratch. However, from previous reviews I wanted to find out if the beans were really from "a can". After challenging/asking my waitress about this she brought out some uncooked beans in her hand. All I can say is that they are definitely not from a can. she mentioned that the chef blends the beans right before refrying them. Maybe this process is what is making them look highly processed. Anyways, my only recommendation to the owners is to add more drink specials! oh, and if you want a spicier salsa for your chips ask for it.. they have a variety of salsas. you just have to ask for them. if you are in the area you have to definitely try it! read more

I will admit, I was not expecting to find delicious, authentic Mexican food when traveling through Hartford, Wisconsin, but Casa Tequila challenged my expectations! A brightly colored building tucked quietly back from the Highway 60, the atmosphere is unassuming, but the staff is friendly and the food is delicious. We visited at lunch--me, a spice-and-heat-loving vegetarian from an urban, heavily Mexican neighborhood, and my mother, a small-town midwestern meat lover whose idea of spice is putting black pepper on her mashed potatoes. (Actually, she's more adverturous than that, but neither of my parents can handle too much spice). We both found flavorful meals that fit the bill perfectly. The meal began with chips and salsa. Contrary to what a previous poster said, they *do* have more than one salsa. They brought two to the table initially--one mild, one a chunky medium--however, if you want the hot arbolo pepper salsa, you may need to ask for it. (As soon as I mentioned I like hot salsa, a waiter gleefully scurried off and came back with the hot salsa.) Though certainly not the hottest salsa I've eaten, it had a very satisfying kick of heat, and, moreover it was flavorful--rich and slightly smokey. The home made chips were just right. My mother thoroughly enjoyed the mild, and tried the chunky salsa as well (though she's not a huge cilantro fan and there was more cilantro in the medium.) Casa Tequila has several vegetarian options. I tried the spinach and cheese enchiladas in mole sauce (you select from three possible sauces.) The mole was well-balanced and flavorful with many subtle notes. I added some of the hot salsa to kick the heat up a bit. The portions are fairly large--plus I'd been munching chips!--so I didn't eat the sides. I tasted the rice--a fairly standard spanish rice--but did not have any of the refried beans. My mother tried the taco salad. The shell was good and crispy. She found the meat and other ingredients flavorful and satisfying. Here again the portion was large enough even on the lunch menu that she took some home with her. She said that in comparison to the other new mexican place in town, she found Casa Tequila's food to seem fresher and better prepared. The staff were very friendly. Granted, it mid-week just after peak lunch time (so they were not very busy), but they were very attentive and chatted with us a while about the food and how they prepare the authentic mexican food (I even picked up a few cooking tips myself!) It was clear to us that person who waited on our table was knowledgable, passionate about the cuisine, and good with people. I usually have reason to pass through this area at least annually...to be sure, I'll be back to Casa Tequila (maybe next time I'll get a chance to try their fresh juice margaritas). In the meantime, I hope the local residents continue to discover give their patronage to this jewel in their midst. read more

Chips are served warm with one pureed mild salsa and another pico de gallo that was more piquant (not sure if I would classify it as "spicy", although that's what the server said). The special,chile in nogada garnished with pomegranate seeds and a filling beef, raisins, spices, nuts. I was happy that they offered more variety in sauces and flavors than I originally expected. Poblano peppers, sauces made in-house, and a fair amount of vegetarian offerings. Margaritas were not my favorite; I'm not an expert, but my companions and I agreed that they tasted off. Casa Tequila is one of those places I eat, almost weekly. I love Mexican food, and theirs is great! They did a nice job renovating the building when they moved in. The chips and salsa are great. The salsa must be homemade, because sometimes it is spicier than others. I really love their salsa! The service is always speedy. They have a great taco special on Tuesday. Stopped in for lunch on a weekday, wasn't crowded at all so I was a little leery. Place was clean and nicely decorated. Used to be a steak joint so they transformed it nicely. I would say it is "cozy". Greeted at the door and seated. Menu has many selections and had some nice lunch specials. I being a fajita person had to check them out. Very good deal, $8.99 for fajitas (chicken or steak) and the portion was large. I had to take the rest home. I would get them again, good tasting and good portion size for the money. Salsa is fresh and really good too. Staff was friendly and attentive, for the most part. We had to wait quite a bit to get our bill which is really annoying when you want to leave. Second visit on a Saturday night, unfortunately close to when they stop serving. They took us in and were nice got us drinks and food. On a recommendation from a local, we tried this place. The first sign that it was a lackluster place should have been the stale chips and bland salsa. Unfortunately, we didn't pay attention and ordered a meal. It was all pretty flavorless. Even the beans seemed like they came from a mix. It was so bad we just decided to pay and leave rather than consume the food. Oddly they were strangely busy. A very mixed experience here. The positives: 1) The menu. Some creative dishes here that are head-and-shoulders above standard beans-and-rice Mexican. 2) The service. Pleasant and accommodating of special requests. The negatives: 1) The bar program. A place that calls itself "Casa Tequila" ought to put their tequila selection front and center. And they appeared to have a pretty good selection including 1800, Hornitos, Corralejo, Patron, and Milagro among others. However, there was no easy way to tell what other tequilas they had. They were all grouped tightly together at the bar, only partially within the patrons' view and with labels facing away from the patrons. And they had no printed list either. When I inquired about their tequila selection, I was directed to a shelf displaying their top-shelf liquors along the back wall of the room. Uhm, thanks but I forgot to bring my binoculars. So in short it looks like they have a genuinely decent tequila selection, now all they have to do is highlight it. Or change the name of the restaurant. 2) The margaritas. I had two. The first was a "specialty" margarita that was fairly big (20oz glass I'd estimate) but had exactly one shot of tequila in it. So I got a shot of pretty expensive tequila diluted with a whole bunch of other stuff. Deciding the specialty margaritas weren't worth the price premium, my next margarita was the house melon-flavored margarita. This was by far the most disgusting margarita -- make that the most disgusting mixed drink of any kind -- that I'd ever had. It tasted like they pulled some liquid cleaning product out of their broom closet, tossed in a splash of Sauza, and then mixed in a bunch of sweetener to disguise the fact that they're trying to kill you. 3) Food presentation. While the menu options were interesting, my dish came buried under a mound of melted cheese that overwhelmed and dominated what otherwise could have been an intriguing and flavorful mix of ingredients. This place has a lot of potential. It needs to work on the details. I wouldn't mind giving it another chance some day. read more

My experience was nearly the same as Dave and Amy's review below. Salsa This is the backbone of any Mexican restaurant. After your first bite you already know what you have in store before ordering. Low quality ingredients really shine through in their flavorless salsa. For some reason they had black pepper in the salsa? The replacement salsa wasn't any better. We are in the peak of tomato season with farmers markets and produces stand in every direction but yet they are using greenhouse tomatoes? Chips were stale, likely pre-made and not warm. Food Clearly everything is out of a box or a can with no seasoning. Rice and beans were completely flavorless. I had the Bistec a la Mexicana, tomato soup base, extra soupy, canned peeled tomatoes, green peppers, missing green onions and grilled jalapeno. "Ribeye steak" tasted off and flavorless, lucky if there was 2oz in the dinner. Corn tortillas clearly came out of a bag and were not warm in the warmer. Total disappointment. Service I ate at the bar and the bartender seemed more interested in the conversations with the 3 other patrons. I had to ask to order, my water was never refilled and again had to ask for my check. She did ask if I liked my food, I replied no, she ask what didn't I like, my reply everything, response "Oh" then swiped my card. No attempt to correct, compensate, get a manager or ask how they could improve. Value Wasn't worth $12 and even if it was $6 I likely wouldn't come back. Conclusion More American food than Mexican, highly processed at authentic prices. To the owners please go talk to your local farmers and stop buying your food from Sysco. I was so excited about this new restaurant coming to Hartford, I love Mexican food, I probably could eat it every day. I must say I have been extremely disappointed with almost every aspect that is important to me in a restaurant. 1) The table and chairs are very cheap, the table wobbles when using a knife, the chairs are uncomfortable (lt is almost comparable to a bistro style) . 2) The place is very loud, the acoustics are horrible! 3) I always order chicken in my food, and every time it has been DRY! I had ordered a grilled chicken taco salad to go, and when I got home the chicken was burned on the bottom (so not acceptable). The chicken is not the nice white shredded type, it's chunky with dark pieces in in (yuck)! 4) The salsa is good, but they don't give you nice size bowls of it (very tiny cups just doesn't work). 5) My husband likes a lot of flavor and the food here is on the bland side (it's missing something). We have tried this place 5 times, I feel we have given them enough chances to have decided we will travel further to get food we really enjoy! Hooray for real Mexican in Hartford! I was home for the holidays so my parents took me to try this place out. I enjoyed the variety on the menu. I decided to try the Parrillada since it sounded good and was unique. It was pretty tasty, as was the salsa. Not quite as good as my three favorite Mexican spots where I live in Virginia Beach, but top notch for small town Hartford. The service was only OK, but the food made up for it. read more
