A weekday lunch at Casa Vega with a buddy, so it was a low-risk proposition. While there were more people at the bar than I expected to see, the restaurant overall was only about half full, and the staff easily kept up with everyone, providing attentive and friendly service from start to finish. As others have stated in detail, CV has been here for a long time, and entering is like going back in time. Even at lunch it's dark and mysterious, with muted lighting and the feel of bygone days. It's quite easy to forget the Summer sun and the bustle of the Valley while you're in here, making it also easy to get lost in conversation, and a pretty perfect place to have that lunchtime catch-up with friends. One thing I really like about Casa Vegas is that they have 2 kinds of tortilla chips: the ubiquitous corn chips and the far-less-common chips made from flour tortillas. These flour chips were a big thing in the late 1980's or early 90's, and a lot of restaurants had them -- but they disappeared for whatever reason, and CV is the only place I know that still has them. And they're great; crispy and more indulgent than traditional corn chips, and I find they have more flavor. They're automatically served with the table-side guacamole, but the waiter will bring them to you if you ask. And you should ask. As to the rest of the food, it's standard "American Mexican" food: tacos and burritos and enchiladas, tostadas and flautas and taquitos, along with plates of the usual things like steak or fajitas, ropa vieja and some seafood. They do have a few top shelf fillings available (shrimp and lobster, and a few higher cuts of steak), but for the most part you're getting the same kind of safe and unchallenging cuisine that convinced mid-century gringos that Mexican food was "okay." My buddy ordered 2 shredded beef tacos, which were nicely plated and generously portioned. I didn't taste them, but they looked very good and he enjoyed them quite a bit. I opted for the Mexican Caesar Salad with Sliced Steak. The lettuces were fresh, cool and crisp, and were nicely coated in a dressing that had a layered, homemade flavor. There were crushed tortilla chips instead of croutons for added crunch, and the steak was a lovely cut, served medium rare (as requested) and well-seasoned. In fact, the seasoning on the meat paired very well with the dressing, so the meat felt like a planned component rather than an extra item added to the side. It was a good salad, and just the right portion for lunch. So, while you won't be finding anything revelatory on the menu, you will be eating well-prepared, tasty food that delivers on a promise made long ago and kept all these years later by people proudly doing what they do as well as it can be done. read more

Let's start with logistics: parking is valet only unless you manage to find street parking on very busy Ventura Blvd. When we arrived, we stood waiting for a bit without being acknowledged. When the hostess came over, there wasn't even a simple "hello," just "How many?" and "Do you have a reservation?" It's a small detail, but hospitality starts with a greeting. The ambience is undeniably cool -- dark, classic, very old-school LA. It has character. Food-wise, it was inconsistent. The albondigas soup leaned salty -- maybe it had reduced over time, maybe just my taste preference. The fajitas were actually the opposite: pretty bland. On the plus side, they weren't overcooked, which is common at many places. The cuts were large, not overloaded with onions (which I appreciated), but also not much chicken. The guacamole had a slight sour note. Not terrible, but enough to question how fresh it was. Our server, however, was great. Attentive, professional, and the highlight of the experience. The menu font is quite small, which makes it difficult to read in the dim lighting. And the payment terminal comes with a tip percentage already selected -- that always feels a bit uncomfortable. My ultimate favorite place in the world! We walked in on a Monday with no reservation on the first day of summer to celebrate my husband's birthday. I loved how they welcomed us with open arms! We started with a complementary basket of warm, fresh chips and a very spicy salsa, along with a side of freshly made guacamole that was incredibly creamy and flavorful. We ordered a Carne Asada wet burrito with chicken added. When it arrived, it was incredibly soggy, and the chicken inside had a watery texture & the steak was extremely overcooked. We flagged down our waiter, who was very polite and understanding, and asked to exchange it for a burrito with grilled chicken breast instead of the wet chicken. While the second burrito was an improvement, the beef was still very overcooked and underseasoned, and the chicken completely lacked flavor. The drinks were also a letdown. We started with a guava drink that had literally no alcohol in it and tasted like watered-down lemonade with no guava flavor at all. We had to order a second drink and a beer just to get something decent. Our bill came out to a whopping $98. For that price, the portions were painfully small, and you can definitely find better quality elsewhere. Honestly, what is all the fuss about? Why so many negative reviews about this place? I have been here twice before, many years ago. I was very uncomfortable and didn't like the corner table we were given at first, but Patrick was able to accommodate us right away and gave us a new table that was much better. Jorge was our server and he was cordial and professional. You can tell he knows his job and the menu well. Johnathan brought our food and kindly took our pictures for us. The complimentary chips and salsa came out first and I will agree with other reviews that the chips were kind of stale. The salsa was delicious. I ordered the Lobster Enchiladas that came with a Tomatillo Sauce, rice/refried beans and a side of sour cream & guacamole ($32). It was absolutely delicious and a very filling portion. I asked for light sauce and got exactly that. They also didn't skimp on the amount of lobster. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and barely have any leftovers for tomorrow. My son ordered the Pollo Asado plate and although he liked it, he said he wouldn't have ordered it if he knew it was going to be a bone-in half chicken plate. It doesn't say that on the menu. His also came with a tomatillo sauce, rice/beans and a side of sour cream/guacamole, with 3 corn tortillas. ($30) You can always ask for flour as well. I have countless wonderful memories here, including moments when Ray Vega himself would stop by our table for a friendly chat. However, after a two-year absence, my recent visit to celebrate Mother's Day with my mom was disappointing. We arrived in the late afternoon, hoping to avoid the crowds, and put our name down. Unfortunately, after waiting 30 minutes for an update, we discovered that our name hadn't even been recorded. Once we were finally seated, there was a significant delay in receiving our drinks and chips. I noticed one server struggling, dropping food for different tables, which was unfortunate. We went there last week for dinner since we had a friend visiting from East Coast and he's a fan of the movie. He had to eat here! I am glad we did. We enjoyed the night out way more! Nice, dark lit restaurant, old school booths and charming cool paintings on the wall. It does have atmosphere, no TV (Yeyyy). Valet parking or street parking if you're lucky! It is small (restrooms included), but it has a nice vibe, you feel immersed in the past. We had a nice waiter, kind, attentive, super sweet and helpful! Great service and wonderful chips and salsa from the house and a water carafe. We tried their house margarita on the rocks and boy it's great! Amazing and you get a small silver container for a refill! The folks from the bar were loud, otherwise it's fun to hang out here and chat with friends over old school Mexican fare. The service really sucks. The waiter never really checked on us and if we asked for water or something. Got a crappy face look from the staff. They look so miserable. I witnessed a lovely older couple who the lady ordered a taco. There was a bug in her food and when they brought a new one out, it was completely wrong. They brought her beef when she originally had chicken. I felt bad because she did not even eat, and they still didn't even offered to pay for the husband's dish or take care of the food. Stopped in to celebrate an anniversary with my wife over at Casa Vega. We've been going there for thirty years or so. We got a couple of great margaritas (very nice, thanks, Antonio), and then ordered a Carnitas Verde Burrito. That's where the fun stopped. We waited... and waited... and waited. Usually they have our entrée out in ten minutes or so. Instead, we waited about an hour. We finally ordered a beer. The salsa, true to form, was great! We polished that off with a full bowl of chips to pass the time. Finally, our parking meter was running out, as was our patience. So we flagged down our server and asked to have our meal packed up so we could take it home. A couple of hours later, we decided to have the burrito. In a word, it was terrible. It wasn't even something I'd feed to my dog. (Pups deserve better.) There were two tiny pieces of hard, gristly pork swimming in a sea of mediocre beans. It was bland, tasteless, and formless. I won't be supporting Casa Vega after seeing how they treated a customer who posted a fair and honest review about her experience with the food. Instead of responding professionally, owner Christy, along with Robert Haleblian and Bill Esparza (@streetgourmetla), chose to publicly attack her and other commenters with insults and inflammatory accusations - calling her a "dumba**" and saying her partner "se*ually abuses" her. A restaurant is free to disagree with criticism, but bullying customers, encouraging online pile-ons, and resorting to personal attacks is completely unacceptable. Hospitality extends beyond what's served on a plate, it's also about how you treat people. One negative review should never trigger this kind of behavior. If a business cannot handle constructive feedback respectfully, that's a major red flag. The way this situation was handled was far more concerning than any complaint about the food itself. I expect professionalism, accountability, and basic decency from a business I support, and unfortunately Casa Vega failed on all three. read more

I'd heard about Casa Vega, and even as a city local, passed it a few times knowing I'd eventually attend and it did not disappoint. I met a few colleagues here for a Friday work lunch, and we enjoyed ourselves. It has a dimly lit ambiance to the spot so I venture to guess it's great for intimate conversations when dining. There was some nice musical tunes in the background not too loud so you could hear it but also carry on conversation too. From a culinary standpoint we started with the table side guacamole and margaritas, how can you go wrong there? I went with the CV Spicy Margarita. For lunch I was set on getting an enchilada but the debate was between Crab & Shrimp or the Lobster....and I went with the Lobster enchilada. They also have a huge drink selection...if you can't decide, the classic margarita will not disappoint. The first sip might have saying "meh"...but when you finish it, you'll be smiling from the buzz you wanted. Compliments to the bartender. No time for dessert so I'll skip that. My only critique...is that the food could have a bit more spice. I probably could have requested some extra hot salsa but no biggie. That's just me. Upon arrival we valeted which was $10. I was kind of taken back but... okay this is Casa Vega good times are ahead right? We arrive roughly 6 minutes late but we were seated at table 30 which is the first table next to the restrooms. Okay thats okay. Upon sitting we were given menus. The food runner or bus boy took our drink order and brought back chips and salsa. Here we waited for 25mins. During the wait our table side guacamole was prepared. Finally between the 25-30min mark our drinks came. I had asked the front hostess to see if we could move to a better suited section that was getting more attention but it was full. So we powered on. After I noted the slow service it took another almost 15min before our food order was taken. Then shortly after our food came within 5-7 mins after ordering. This is when the hostess came back to let us know the guac and 50% of the first drinks had been comped due to the lack of service. This was thoughtful and a nice gesture. Although all that had already occurred the food well... it was definitely showing changes. Michelada - This was alright. It wasnt too lemony and was barely on par for a michelada. House Margarita - In my 20 years of enjoying margaritas this was definitely top 3 worst of all time. They used to be good and solid. This time around the ingredients changed. I felt like the lime / lemon juice used was more lemonade like. Total let down. Carne Asada Tacos - I used to get a combo plate of either 2 or 3 items. The carne asada tacos used to be packed with carne and pico. Now we're barely getting a few bits of carne and pico to fill out the taco. Rice and Beans - I swear honestly they had more flavor and the sauce that topped the rice was more flavorful. This time very bland and missing something. Everything was off. Unfortunately this time at Casa Vega was a total let down. I'm not sure if we would be coming back. Casa Vega I hope this was just an off night but I feel this might be a sign. I miss my old restaurants Presidente, Sierras, El Chapparel and I don't want to miss the legendary Casa Vega. read more

In studio city sticking out like a sore thumb on Ventura Blvd. larger than life and twice as fancy is some of the very best Mexican food and even better mix of Mexican Style libations in Southern California. The waiters are stylish and well groomed, the bartenders are a little seasoned and older but will treat your ladies to excellent margaritas and mescal mixtures. The place is normally packed with fun locals and even if you have no reservations then the bar is quickly served and usually available after only a few moments. The meat is smoky the servings are very healthy. It's priced for the area so it's not terribly cheap, but I think if you want some good food then this is certainly worth the gamble. Try it and have your tastebuds thank me later. If you come in and you don't like it, odds are you don't know good food. read more

i love that you can dine in late. Most restaurants got lazy and started closing super early but CASA VEGA always has my back! We had an amazing meal! I got a burrito, my friend a steak and my mom the tableside guacamole! the staff is always sooooo nice! they take good care of us! the food comes out fresh and hot and super fast! refills happen before I can even ask. I was really looking forward to this place but it was very underwhelming. The service was good and the ambiance was beautiful too. Felt like you are eating in a museum. I feel like if you're wanting to eat here, it's more for the aesthetics and vibes. The food was very mid. This place has been on our list to try, but after tonight's dinner. It's a one and done. Service was not great, they would not com around to ask if we needed anything extra. It took forever to get a waiter's attention. The ambience is cool but comparing this to El Compadre in Hollywood. Hyped by Tim Conway Jr on KFI...come on Tim A while back, this radio dude was hyping us this place - and so in reliance of his non stop yapping, we decided to visit. Do yourself a favor and 1) don't listen to advice from Tim, and 2) avoid this place. The fajitas were lumpy and icky - no sizzle, no flavor. The burrito we got was horrific. This is one of those really cool restaurants that has been there forever. Even though we live about 45 minutes away, we have to visit a few times a year. They have valet parking that cost $10, or you can find your own parking nearby, but it is Ventura Blvd so that can be tough. Save yourself the frustration and pay the money and valet. They decorate for the holidays and boy do they go over the top. This place has a great vibe, and you are made to feel like you are part of a family there. The service is always first class. The cocktails are outstanding, and we always enjoy the chips and salsa. The food is not the best you will ever have but is still very good and with the whole vibe and package you get, it is definitely worth 5 stars and a visit.
