Also love that they bring complimentary chips and salsa. While the vibes and staff are both lovely, the food is just okay. A bit overpriced and mediocre in flavor, quality and freshness. We got a burrito for $29 that didn't come with any sides and was bland and there was no texture throughout. Birthday Ruined My friend and I made a reservation and specifically reserved the "Brad Pitt" booth because when i asked her what she wanted to do for her birthday, that was all she wanted to do... go to Casa Vega ( her first time) and sit in that booth. When we got there, the guy who sat us told us we couldn't have the table we had specifically reserved because we were a party of 2 and that was a table for 4. They weren't even busy! The place was pretty empty and they could've easily accommodated us. We even told them it was my friend's birthday and they didn't care. Then, they proceeded to seat us at a 2 person table that was across from a really old gentleman who was with a super young girl (who could've been his granddaughter- to each his own, but didn't want to see that all night. When we asked for a different table they said the others were all reserved... hmmm interesting that I didn't see anyone sit there during our time there. A weekday lunch at Casa Vega with a buddy, so it was a low-risk proposition. While there were more people at the bar than I expected to see, the restaurant overall was only about half full, and the staff easily kept up with everyone, providing attentive and friendly service from start to finish. As others have stated in detail, CV has been here for a long time, and entering is like going back in time. Even at lunch it's dark and mysterious, with muted lighting and the feel of bygone days. It's quite easy to forget the Summer sun and the bustle of the Valley while you're in here, making it also easy to get lost in conversation, and a pretty perfect place to have that lunchtime catch-up with friends. One thing I really like about Casa Vegas is that they have 2 kinds of tortilla chips: the ubiquitous corn chips and the far-less-common chips made from flour tortillas. These flour chips were a big thing in the late 1980's or early 90's, and a lot of restaurants had them -- but they disappeared for whatever reason, and CV is the only place I know that still has them. And they're great; crispy and more indulgent than traditional corn chips, and I find they have more flavor. They're automatically served with the table-side guacamole, but the waiter will bring them to you if you ask. And you should ask. As to the rest of the food, it's standard "American Mexican" food: tacos and burritos and enchiladas, tostadas and flautas and taquitos, along with plates of the usual things like steak or fajitas, ropa vieja and some seafood. They do have a few top shelf fillings available (shrimp and lobster, and a few higher cuts of steak), but for the most part you're getting the same kind of safe and unchallenging cuisine that convinced mid-century gringos that Mexican food was "okay." My buddy ordered 2 shredded beef tacos, which were nicely plated and generously portioned. I didn't taste them, but they looked very good and he enjoyed them quite a bit. I opted for the Mexican Caesar Salad with Sliced Steak. The lettuces were fresh, cool and crisp, and were nicely coated in a dressing that had a layered, homemade flavor. There were crushed tortilla chips instead of croutons for added crunch, and the steak was a lovely cut, served medium rare (as requested) and well-seasoned. In fact, the seasoning on the meat paired very well with the dressing, so the meat felt like a planned component rather than an extra item added to the side. It was a good salad, and just the right portion for lunch. So, while you won't be finding anything revelatory on the menu, you will be eating well-prepared, tasty food that delivers on a promise made long ago and kept all these years later by people proudly doing what they do as well as it can be done. read more

Let's start with logistics: parking is valet only unless you manage to find street parking on very busy Ventura Blvd. When we arrived, we stood waiting for a bit without being acknowledged. When the hostess came over, there wasn't even a simple "hello," just "How many?" and "Do you have a reservation?" It's a small detail, but hospitality starts with a greeting. The ambience is undeniably cool -- dark, classic, very old-school LA. It has character. Food-wise, it was inconsistent. I have been going to Casa Vega since the late 1980's. It had always been a high quality authentic Mexican restaurant with a premium price. I moved away from Sherman Oaks but have made it a priority to go back to Casa Vega a few times a year. I have to say over the course of the last several years the quality has slowly declined. The original owners retired or passed on and new management took over, the daughter i believe. We went tonight and there was little resemblance to the food we used to enjoy. First, the salsa recipe is different and not nearly as good. I have to ask why would this be changed when it was the best in area? I ordered the empanada burrito with carnitas inside. This used to be a burrito with casa vegas excellent refried beans that is oven baked with ranchero sauce and a light amount of cheese on top. Instead the burrito did have beans inside with the carnitas but they were not as good as they once were, being more chewy and less flavorful. And the burrito was drowning out in melted cheese and somewhere some ranchero sauce was on there. My wife ordered a chili relleno combo. A chili relleno is a poblano pepper stuffed with cheese and fried with an egg batter. Not any more. There was no cheese inside! There was a minuscule amount of cheese on top. The house margarita was still top of the line and the chips were still very good. In summary, what was once a top valley Mexican restaurant is now mediocre at best. That food no longer warrants a premium price. I struggled to give it a 2. Sadly I will never return. read more

Honestly, what is all the fuss about? Why so many negative reviews about this place? I have been here twice before, many years ago. Tonight was my third time dining here since my son and I decided to go out for dinner. It really hit the spot after not having Mexican food for a very long time. The complimentary chips and salsa came out first and I will agree with other reviews that the chips were kind of stale. The salsa was delicious. I ordered the Lobster Enchiladas that came with a Tomatillo Sauce, rice/refried beans and a side of sour cream & guacamole ($32). It was absolutely delicious and a very filling portion. I asked for light sauce and got exactly that. They also didn't skimp on the amount of lobster. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and barely have any leftovers for tomorrow. My son ordered the Pollo Asado plate and although he liked it, he said he wouldn't have ordered it if he knew it was going to be a bone-in half chicken plate. It doesn't say that on the menu. His also came with a tomatillo sauce, rice/beans and a side of sour cream/guacamole, with 3 corn tortillas. ($30) You can always ask for flour as well. They have a full bar here and the drinks are EXCELLENT! I had a Frozen Coconut Margarita ($18) which was PERFECTION!!! So silky, smooth, DELICIOUS! I was about to lick the glass clean. My son had the Guava Margarita ($18) and loved it as well. Very well balanced and I also thought it was great and I don't even like Guava. Again, I don't know why there are so many bad reviews! We started with a complementary basket of warm, fresh chips and a very spicy salsa, along with a side of freshly made guacamole that was incredibly creamy and flavorful. This famous restaurant has a rich history--helped made famous by actor Marlon Brando and even featured in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood--so my expectations were high. We ordered a Carne Asada wet burrito with chicken added. When it arrived, it was incredibly soggy, and the chicken inside had a watery texture & the steak was extremely overcooked. We flagged down our waiter, who was very polite and understanding, and asked to exchange it for a burrito with grilled chicken breast instead of the wet chicken. While the second burrito was an improvement, the beef was still very overcooked and underseasoned, and the chicken completely lacked flavor. The drinks were also a letdown. We started with a guava drink that had literally no alcohol in it and tasted like watered-down lemonade with no guava flavor at all. We had to order a second drink and a beer just to get something decent. Our bill came out to a whopping $98. For that price, the portions were painfully small, and you can definitely find better quality elsewhere. Inedible to me. - My partner's refried beans (with the Chili Colorado) came out hard, cold, and dry. - My mom's chiles rellenos were just as bad. Only the chips, salsa, and drinks tasted normal. For decades, this was my favorite restaurant. Then I had to relocate to Canada for work. I just moved back, and this was the first place I HAD to eat at. What a disappointment!!!!! Then $29 for a scoop of rice and beans, a cheese enchilada and a shredded beef enchilada. They don't serve my favorite anymore, which was a ground beef enchilada. Plus tax, and then $10 for parking at 3:00 p.m. on a Sunday. Over $60 for what cost them under $5 to prepare. This is not the Casa I loved, and the attitude of the white servers was as though I was making them work, while the Hispanic servers were friendly, efficient, and totally embarrassed by the costs. I understand the higher prices to give the work staff better pay. But management has dumped all of those costs onto the customer without taking a slight profit hit. I'm normally more of a carnivore, but the veg was calling to me that day and did not disappoint, haha. The spicy marg was too sweet and not all that spicy, IMO. I wouldn't get that again. I'm writing this as a disappointed customer of Casa Vega for almost 20 years. Last night I came to the restaurant with my partner and instead of the usual price of it being around $70/80 dollars (with a tip) for a couple of drinks (which are now micro sized), 2 plates and a guacamole, the bill came to over $130. We were mortified! A place that used to be relatively customer friendly with their prices and even catering to those in need during the pandemic. It's sad to see the heart of Casa Vega (under new management) be ruined by greed. Even with the new construction and changes it felt weird, but now with the prices being hiked up, it's a real shame! It had some kind of spice I did not recognize and did not like in this drink, and it was VERY weak, as if there was very little tequila in it. My wife ordered beef tacos. I took one bite. The blandest and most tasteless taco I have ever eaten. I ordered the chicken mole'. I am a mole afficionado. This was the most flavorless, blandest mole ever. No discernable heat, no discernable chocolate, no distinctive flavors. The server did a good job. The bill was $98 and change. I tipped $10, the valet was $10. $120.00 for a meal that was tasteless, for a meal that was not worth $20. Used to love coming to this place, the food used to be so delicious now it's sad what it's become. Came for the food, stayed for the vibes-- don't think i'll be returning any time soon. We were sat outside in the patio, which was so gorgeous. Our server wasn't very attentive. I think he only touched our table 3 times, always in a rush. We were out of chips, didn't receive sharing plates after ordering appetizers, needed drinks refilled but never got them. We gave up after having to ask random bussers and servers for what we needed. Our table was crowded with so many dirty plates that we ended up stacking them ourselves. And they still didn't get picked up. I don't expect forbes service standards but it was ridiculous. As far as the food. The beans are canned. It's obvious in the taste, i'd like to see the restaurant deny it. The rice was undercooked. My enchiladas were a soppy ball of tortillas grease and cheese. Everything we ordered was mediocre and overpriced. Even something as simple as guacamole was not good. It was so bland. I'd prefer not having the table side presentation if it meant it would taste better. I used to come here all the time. I won't be back. Maybe for a margarita, but the service and food is awful. The food was honestly the biggest disappointment. The quality was poor, the portions were underwhelming for the price, and almost everything lacked flavor. Nothing tasted fresh or memorable, and with so many incredible Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, this just didn't come close. Served sizzling hot, packed with flavor, and cooked to perfection, every bite hit. You can tell this kitchen knows exactly what they're doing. I'd heard about Casa Vega, and even as a city local, passed it a few times knowing I'd eventually attend and it did not disappoint. I met a few colleagues here for a Friday work lunch, and we enjoyed ourselves. It has a dimly lit ambiance to the spot so I venture to guess it's great for intimate conversations when dining. There was some nice musical tunes in the background not too loud so you could hear it but also carry on conversation too. From a culinary standpoint we started with the table side guacamole and margaritas, how can you go wrong there? I went with the CV Spicy Margarita. For lunch I was set on getting an enchilada but the debate was between Crab & Shrimp or the Lobster....and I went with the Lobster enchilada. What has happened? Food was horrific! Was there on Saturday, August 22! Ordered crispy chicken tacos and finally got them after sending tacos back I never ordered! I've always loved their refried beans but the order I received was like a pot of clay! Ordered flour chips which I use to buy frequently but my chips were overcooked. Came in at 10:45 pm on a Wednesday with a group of 3 people to have some food, been calling the number since 9pm to ask when last call is since they close at 12, no one picked up the phone so we came in waiting about 7 minutes to be seated the gentleman who was manager said we're closed i said it says 12 we have over an hour and i said i been calling to check for last call without any explanation why his closing a hour & 15 minutes early and not answering the phone he says we're closed this guy has no manager skills or experience the owner should look into this matter. Most likely they're closing early because it's slow we came in to bring business and spend money, definitely not a good way to treat customers he needs to be fired asap. read more
