So my friend has been going here for decades, turned on to the place from another friend who has also been coming here for decades. DECADES because this place has been around for 50 years!!! How this is this the first time I have ever been is admittedly an embarrassing admission.... Burritos El Chavo is an institution, that has rightfully earned its place with their loyal customers, and I, too, am one now. From the moment I walked in and was greeted, I knew it was going to be gooooood. If I see a chile relleno on a menu, my go to order will always be, without fail, a chile relleno burrito with refried beans and add onions and cilantro. I have had many, some great, some so so. When I tell you this was single-handedly THE BEST chile relleno burrito I have ever had, I say that with full chest. What makes it stand out more than others? The sauce and the beans. My friend's go to order is carnitas and the carne asada, and she cuts in half and eats one of each. I must say hers looked tempting, but I just don't know if I can ever switch, because that flavor is now a core memory. Wow, what a disappointment! I have been going to this place for a few years now. Haven't been there in a long time though. Yesterday was the final straw!! Place is a hole in the wall small eatery. This place used to be a great place to have all of your favorite authentic Mexican food. Not any more. Walked in yesterday around 3:20pm and barely got a hello from Earnie, actually it was an Ola, automatically assuming that all of their customers are hispanic. I don't even want to talk about his wife. Don't know her name and don't really care. She was very unpleasant, unprofessional, rude, mean, and disrespectful. I even told her. I got me a Carne Asada Burrito with shredded beef, onions, beans, tomato sauce, & cilantro. I also got their Horchata that tasted so bad. It was basically water, with a pinch of cinnamon in it. Food overall tasted less than mediocre. Horchata was $4.50, and add Guac. $2.50. Guac tasted bland and was missing the main ingredients in it. Like garlic, lemon juice, and other spices.. Chips was small, but decent. Had to ask for that too.Didn't come with the meal. Ambiance was dull, and boring. There were probably 4 people in there including myself. They don't do delivery nor do catering. However, you can pick up to go orders. I am being generous with the last star. Place was clean, food came out quick, and they had few parking spaces in the back. Not all restaurants have parking these days! No public restroom either. Will not be returning. I live around the corner and really enjoy being able to walk right over. I really like the bean and cheese burrito. And for drink I get a mix of horchata and jamaica. Always hits the spot. It's a no frills place and maybe that's what I dig about it the most. It's a family run restaurant and we all know each other and chat a bit. Date: May 19, 2022 Hubs and I were both craving Mexican food so yelped around and saw that SFVeats on Instagram posted about Burritos El Chavo so we decided to check it out since it wasn't too far from us. Although we both were looking for tacos, we ended up with different selections because there was just so many interesting choices! 1. Asada plate (14.75$) - comes with beans, asada, rice, guacamole, salsa and onions/cilantro. As well as a side of 3 tortillas. At first glance I thought 'wow. It's so less' but after I started eating, I was like 'oh man, I'm stuffed!' Everything was well seasoned and tasted great! I usually don't do Mexican beans but there's were so soft and yummy! 2. Junior plate (8.95$) - we got this one for our little man and he ate it like a champ! Loved the beans, rice and asada and he usually isn't a big fan of beef! 5 stars! 3. Beef burrito (14.75$) - the love got this one. The beef is shredded and cooked with bell peppers and onions. It was so soft and juicy and melted in my mouth. He usually doesn't like rice either but he said the rice was so good!! We also ordered two drinks, orange and apple jarritos! Perfect to match the meal. I grew up in LA, and Burritos El Chavo is the best Mexican spot in the Valley, and one of my favorites in all of LA. Tucked behind a liquor store, this hole in the wall gem makes the best bean and cheese burrito and aces their asada and carnitas. I've tried everything they make at Burritos el Chavo, from tacos to nachos to enchiladas to taquitos, and there's nothing I crave more regularly. It's become a favorite for everyone that I've brought here, and the owners are always so nice. All these bad reviews on yelp are actually mind blowing to me, and I can only assume that those people have bad taste and have never had authentic Mexican food. This place has been in my heart for years. It's family owned and family run, and the food is perfect. No matter what I order it feels like I've been invited over for a home cooked meal. Wow, this place really hits the awful trifecta of A) overpriced menu items, B) mediocre food, and C) utterly awful customer service. I bought a Carne Asada burrito yesterday which was about the size (and taste!) of a 75¢ frozen burrito you could get a Ralph's. It was $13.25. Half the size of a Chipotle burrito, 30% more expensive. Perfect! What really stood out was the awful attitude of the cashier lady. Others have noted this as well in their reviews. She was regarding me as if I was a pest.
