For visitors to Houston landing in Hobby Airport, I'm afraid that the drive down Edgebrook is not the first impression of this fine city I'd have chosen for you. However, the food at Casarez is the taste of Tex-Mex we're proud of. If you're eating here around lunch time (as I was) $10 is more than enough to stuff your face so full you won't need dinner. The lunch specials are a great value, and include things like a Footlong Burrito (get out your ruler kids, this isn't a 10in subway "footlong" either) with rice and beans, the "Casarez Special" which includes one of almost everything on the menu, enchilada platters, or a 3 taco plate. They even had vegetarian options, which is hard to find at Mexican chain restaurants. The decor is spot-on too with day-glo paint colors, and oil paintings of cowboys and cacti. Topping it off are mis-matched plastic seats and a radio blaring latino hits. When it's time to pay, you get up, and go to the register. read more

Definitely a really good dive Mexican restaurant. The prices are very inexpensive and the food is tasty. The staff is great. They have $3.50 margaritas all day long! Let me tell you those margaritas are greeeeeeaaaatt! The food is great. I had the plate which comes with three tacos and rice and beans for $6.50! My husband had the cheese enchiladas for $7 something can't remember. Both were awesome! We also tried the queso, yummy. The chips and salsas were authentic and very delicious. Many thanks to the Yelpers who tipped us off about this local find. We were staying in a hotel near Hobby Airport and wanted to get some good, authentic Tex-Mex during a very short trip to Houston. This place surpassed our expectations. Not only was the food delicious and cheap, the staff were tremendously kind and friendly. One of our party of four was a vegetarian, and they double-checked with the kitchen to make sure the beans were veg-friendly (they were) and then made sure that the people ordering the grill platter understood that it contained meat. One of the co-owners stopped by the table to chat. They were all lovely people. The grill platter for two had a LOT of meat: shrimp, chicken, pork chop, and some other stuff I'm not remembering at the moment. Thumbs up generally (although my mom didn't care for the beef that was included on the platter, there was so much food that she had more than enough to contend with without it). I had a very tasty dish, "Pork Tampico," which was deep-fried chunks of pork tenderloin in a spicy tomato sauce. The frying and the saucing were done with a light hand, and the dish was served with very good fresh guacamole, beans and rice. My sister enjoyed her veggie enchiladas. Casarez is terrific. My friends and I have been going to Casarez for over seven years now!!! Bobby and his crew have great food both on and off the menu, and it's not just mexican food. Breakfast - as good as it gets breakfast tacos served quickly and to order. Their breakfast burrito is a monster and will out you back in bed for sure! hahaha! Lunch / Dinner - Let's start with the chips and salsa, Thier verde salsa is as good a salsa can be, there are only lateral moves from this one people. You can go to Casarez and be totally satisfied ordering 3 beef fajita soft tacos. Thier fajita meat is THICK and tasty! The Lunch menu foot long burrito will definitely satisfy and fill anyone. They also have a crazy Chicken Cordon Blue, Seafood menu, and Steaks to boot! Their cheese burger is massive and comes to you sizzling on a fajita plate!!! The staff are in it for the long haul and always remember you. Every year at Christmas these guys allow you to sign up for a dinner that they do one night while closed, the meal is free!!!!!!! all you do is sign up, come on over and enjoy! Went there based on Yelp reviews and wasn't disappointed. The staff is all in as far as being attentive and quick to take care of the customer. The owner is out and interacting with the diners checking up on us as well. A co-worker and I both over ordered on our food, and had at least 5 margaritas each. The tamales and the enchiladas tasted exactly the same, greasy overcooked with a chuck of burnt hamburger tossed on top. We must have chosen the table between two stations because the waitresses walked passed us several times to take orders from customers that came in after us. Once I did flag one down I guess I upset her because it was all downhill from there. Had to ask for our drinks from 3 different workers before ours were brought to the table and then I guess they thought we didn't need chips. It wasn't that busy inside. We did eventually get to eat but it was pretty uncomfortable after all the grief of poor service. There are way too many Mexican restaurants around that will treat the customer like a VIP. I swung into Casarez based on the previous review and that I drive down this street once or twice a week. I went in for a Sunday late lunch and was surprised that there was a family of about 20 people celebrating a birthday. That is always a good sign if there is a party! The crowd overall was very diverse - another good sign. Now I am not really an expert of Tex-Mex or Creole-Mex as it is called here with its Louisianna influences. It seemed that they had an expansive menu far beyond the typical fare and I did see mention of a wood fired grill. It seems a few trips here would definitely unveil some wonderful treats. The two salsas they severed with the chips were fresh and delicious. The meal came out quickly and prepared to order and was quite yummy. I ordered the Casarez Special - I thought that would give a good cross section of their food - crispy taco, tamale, and an enchilada w/ the customary rice and beans. The beans had a great flavor to them! I then broke down and ordered dessert. Not knowing what to order I blindly ordered sopapilla - remember I am not an expert. And what a delight when they brought it out! Puffy and crispy with honey on the side. Heaven! I left happy! For the more seasoned diner I am sure you will find great things on this menu. Drove by this place for three years and just wrote it off as another Mexican restaurant on Edgebrook. Finally tried it and was pleasantly surprise on the quality of the food. The owner happened to walk by our table and told us how he used to be a chef at one of the swanky hotels downtown and his food shows it. Try the fried avocado (not on the menu) or the pasta! I'm a total Mex snob from Colorado and this place was really good! I usually dislike most peoples recos on Mex food, but Yelpers have this one correct. Had the Shrimp Rancheros plate; it came with 12 large grilled shrimp with rancheros sauce (tomatos, onions, peppers etc...) on top, small side of guac, refried beans, mex rice and six corn tortillas for under $10 (ridiculous value). All of it was great including their chips and salsa. There was so much food that my "to go" became my dinner for that night. Casarez is a very good mom and pop Mex restaurant choice! Found the Mecca of Mexican food, and it is Edgebrook Drive. Unfortunately, we went to Casarez first and thus have not tried any of the deliciously enticing taco trucks or other options...one day. I'm planning a taco crawl where I just walk down the street eating from every restaurant. This place was super crowded on a Sunday afternoon but subdued on the Monday night we visited. Quick service. We've tried the fajitas, very smoky and good; queso flameado (with chorizo) which is, of course, insanely delicious; fried avocado with chicken, which was perfect - crunchy and soft and warm and full of wonderful things; carne guisada, which was good but not the best I've ever had; and the foot long burrito, which was awesome - comes with guac and cheese inside which was a pleasant bonus, since many burritos just skip those fixings. Price is right and the food is on point. We will be back to Casarez. They have some very intriguing Mexican/seafood combinations that I am dying to try but just couldn't tear myself away from the classics to order quite yet. read more

I love their food and the service is great. The owner will even come out and visit every table to make sure everyone is enjoying the food. Their Mexican burgers are the best!!!! I haven't been able to find a better one anywhere else. The meat is thick and juicy and well done. And being a Mexican burger, they add ham, but THICK ham. All the other topping are on the side for you to add to your liking. It's too big for me to eat by myself, but it's too good to share it, lol. The only down side is the parking. It's way too small, but you should be able to find a parking spot. As a bonus, they have a drive thru. I usually order the burgers and then pick them up at the window. This place has consistently served good-tasting, reasonably-priced meals for years! The variety is great. Especially enjoy the hamburger being served on a fajita platter - it lets the onions get grilled just that much more!! The atmosphere is friendly and makes everyone feel like family. I wish I had stayed to eat dinner here, but after a long 5 hour drive, I was exhausted and decided to get my food to go. I got stuffed Avocado which was my first time eating such a delicacy. I have to say I was impressed. That was definitely the most delicious tasting meal I had had in a long time. It wasnt as heavy as I was expecting considering it was fried. The chicken stuffing they used was essentially fajita chicken which made it that much more awesome. It makes me drool here as I type this. I wish I could order it in the mail! Whenever I see a restaurant offering 2 types of cuisine, I typically avoid them because I believe "fusion" is a bad idea, or that most places can't do both well. This place CAN, and DOES, do both well. I ordered blackened chicken, wife ordered a combo called "the grande" which came with tacos, a chalupa and enchiladas. Dinner came with complimentary chips and salsa. You get 2 types of salsa, green and red. Neither are particularly great, but neither are bad. What can you say, it's free? The cool part is that both salsa come in a neat carafe-type container so you can pour yourself some more as needed. The blackened chicken? Comes with blackened seasoning, but it's not blackened with high heat. Topped with shrimp etouffee. It passed the sniff test when it was brought to the table. Smelled and looked great, and tasted pretty darned good. Got a chance to get a nibble of the wifes combo. Tacos/chalupa is the standard stuff, but her enchiladas were quite good. Overall, the food is a little bit above average. Service is very friendly, and the price is an ok value-for-money. 30 bucks for 2 people including tip. Cararez is a good "hole-in-the-wall" type, independant place that blows away all of the chain restaurants it competes against. 4 out of 5 stars. Could be maybe just a little bit better. **side note** I don't considered this a "fusion" place. While offering up both mex and cajun/creole, the dishes are kept separate, making no silly attempt to combine cuisines. read more
