I had a wonderful time at this little place in Harlem. The food was excellent and very fresh. He drinks are made homemade in the back so they take time. The service is ok to good. Some of the waitress's are good and others act as if you are bothering them. Hopefully, you check it out and get a good one. The bibbimbop bowl is was amazing and so much food. I came back recently for brunch and felt it necessary to write a quick update. First off, the fact that I needed to come back here within a week of my first visit says something! Again, my experience was spot on all around. We tried the Tres Leches Pancakes, which was basically the reason for my return. I had to try them and they did not disappoint. They are crisp on the outside, and soft in the middle. The dish is not too sweet or heavy, which is key, and I love the addition of banana and walnuts to top it all off. We shared one savory item as well, the Short Ribs Benedict, and it was absolutely delicious. The short ribs were flavorful and literally just fall apart because they are so tender. I really enjoyed the adobo hollandaise on top. It gave the dish wonderful flavor and was a nice change from the standard hollandaise sauce that you get elsewhere. I also appreciated that they used buttermilk biscuits as the base for the dish. The home fries were perfect as well. I have yet to have a single dish here that doesn't leave me ooooing and ahhing and dying to return. Of course I did my usual food stalking of the surrounding tables to see what everyone else was eating... Everything looked so good. I'm looking forward to coming back and sampling more of the menu. I think it's safe to say this is officially one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. read more

I've ordered pretty much every brunch item - short ribs Benedict, dulce de leche pancakes. But it's really the eggs Benedict cascalote which carries this entire review. The potatoes are sautéed with peppers and onions. Not mushy or an afterthought. They are firm, soft, crispy and well seasoned. The Cascalote Benedict consists of two hefty crab cakes topped with sautéed spinach, poached eggs and a rich, creamy spicy hollandaise sauce. It is out of bounds. The crab cake is chunky, creamy and firm on the inside with a crispy panko crust on the outside. It is beyond delicious. Spinach is not wet but sautéed. The eggs poached perfectly. No water. Nor over cooked. Then topped with a rich buttery hollandaise. Worth every plank pose and mountain climber. They have a full bar. As well as coffee, jarritos and aguas. The decor is perfectly comfortable. The whole restaurant seats maybe 25 small people. The music wafting in the background varies from reggaeton, elie Goulding, to rated X hip hop. In my mind it kind of completes the whole Spanish Harlem vibe. Staff is well trained albeit not fancy. But, oh well. This is the best place to eat in East Harlem. My boyfriend thinks so as well and we usually disagree on restaurants. We Both love their crabcake and whole red snaper, which normally comes filet but they can make it whole upon request. The shrimp salad with fried plantains and avocado is my favorite !! Maaaaaaaaan this place was great. One of the many reasons I love yelp is that I can select an area and find whatever I want in said area. One Sunday what I wanted was brunch (But really, when do I NOT want brunch?). Living in Stockholm city has made me really testy when it comes to taking trains in NYC. I expect to get anywhere in half an hour, and because I was staying in the Bronx, my options needed to be close to me. Furthermore, I have wayyyy too many bookmarks in lower Manhattan, meaning I really need to explore a little more. I came across Cascalote and the reviews were what made me decide. I was so glad I did! We arrived around 12, just an hour after they opened and we were the first ones there. The waitress sat us immediately and began to explain the history behind the restaurant. Her parents own it, buy all the ingredients fresh, and make all the food. A heavy claim to make, but believable, and made me so excited to try the food. It was tough deciding, but I eventually ordered Las Tortugas (Mexican sandwich). It arrived and I was pleased to see how big the portion was. It must've taken at least an entire large potato to make my side of fries. They were DELICIOUS, and I had to stop myself from eating them before I ran out of space for the sandwich. The sandwich had pretty basic bread but the ingredients were tasty, fresh, and abundant. Good thing they wrapped both halves in parchment paper because it's so packed, the fillings tried to escape with every bite. My friend ordered the huevos rancheros and they were equally, if not more amazing (Don't tell him but after we exchanged bites, I just wanted to keep the rest of his dish). We also shared tres leches pancakes, which aren't exactly pancakes in the traditional sense. They were denser and thicker, and had a slightly crisp crust. Aside from the crust which put me off a bit, these things were INCREDIBLE. Damn. I would go here just to eat these. I really wanted to give this review 4.5 stars for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I couldn't replace my fries with a salad, which I thought was strange. It annoyed me because having options and accommodating customers' wants and needs should be a priority at restaurants. Secondly, the pancake crust. It was a busy Monday night at the corner laundromat. Since my bf and I didn't want to stand around and mingle with the screaming children rushing around the laundry baskets, we thought we'd grab a quick bite at this new taqueria just down the block. Boy. What a fun way to combine the much hated chore with leisure. looks like there will be more "laundry nights" in my near future. The place was literally a hole in the wall. we were seated at the north wall, and on the south wall there was 16 electric outlet... take notes! The A/C / heater was blowing hot dry heat on my face and I really didn't like it. Otherwise, the staff was friendly and pleasant, the deco cute, and they blasted a wide range of music from Mariachi, Ranchero to Indie pop. Bf ordered taco de pollo, and I the vegetarian burritos. The courtesy chips were nice with good salsa. Since it was a slow Monday night, we were treated with arugula salad with spiced (pumpkin?) seeds and pear while we waited. The salad was delicious. My bf's chicken tacos were good ($12 for 3 tacos). He said that the corn tortilla had a nice flavor to it, which tasted better than other tacos we had. He asked for a habanero sauce, and was treated with a homemade chili-onion hot sauce which was heavenly. It was really hot that it took my bf two coronas to wash it down. He liked the sauce so much that he asked to buy some from the kitchen, and so we went home with a carton full of homemade hot sauce! My burrito was firmly packed with tasty rice, beans, sweet corns and zuchini. I appreciated the fact that it was not runny nor watery, but moist and firm that when I sliced the burrito open, nothing fell apart! The ingredients tasted so good it was surprising. The salsa that came with the burrito has marinated carrots, onions and tomatos in it and was a nice surprise to balance out the burrito. I think they also lightly grilled the burrito, for it had a nice flavor to it, and the flour tortilla was warm & not soggy nor too soft or sticky. We were treated with a slice of flan and it was creamy and delicious as a flan can be. I'm so glad we decided to hop in this little place. We will definitely be back! read more

YES, YES, AND YES to this FAMILY business. The waitresses were the daughters of the cooks (mom and dad) who owned the restaurant. I loved that experience of feeling like I was in someone's home getting a home cooked meal. The waitresses were really nice and made great food recommendations. Went here for the first time last week (although I had been eyeing it for a while) and this might by my new favorite spot. Loved everything we ordered. I also found the vegetarian fajitas particularly fresh and much better than any I have had recently in the city. You could tell the vegetables were of higher quality. One thing I wish had been mentioned was when I asked for a little more salsa, guacamole and sour cream for my friend, they charged us a $1 for each. I wouldn't have asked for the salsa and guacamole if I had known (it would have been nice to be forewarned). Regardless, I highly recommend this place and I will be back! read more

Why didn't I find Cascalote sooner?! This cozy spot tucked away on 2nd has the best huevos rancheros and chilaquiles I've been able to find since moving outta Brooklyn. The yucca fries were cooked to perfection and the green sauce on the side was seriously addicting. We walked in when they first opened and by the time we left the place was packed. Popped in here for lunch while visiting some friends in the city. Our table had the short ribs eggs Benedict, a burrito & huevos hornados (sp). The short ribs Benedict were the table favorite, the biscuit on the bottom (rather than English muffin) made the dish in my opinion. The portion was fairly large, we wished we had shared and skipped the burrito. Margaritas were on point. The menu at the restaurant was more limited than what's posted on yelp, but still full of yummy sounding options. One criticism- I was accidentally charged the happy hour price for my drink even though it wasn't happy hour. After taking my ticket & card, they came back to tell me they adjusted it for the higher price, $4 more. That's fine as I had planned for the regular cost, but I feel like it would have been a nice gesture (and good business) to let that one slide. read more

What a wonderful spot. I can eat their vegetarian nachos all day everyday! They combine spiraled zucchini, kale, spinach, on individual tortilla chips. A large amount too, they are very liberal with the toppings making each nacho a heavenly experience. They're service is wonderful, our waitress explained everything very well on the menu and was very attentive. Ambiance, comfortable, and done tastefully, not tacky at all with the decorations. I was very impressed with the bathroom, clean, and different soaps/lotions to use. I think that shows a lot of integrity about a place. I don't recommend the vegetarian fajitas, I was super disappointed, I was expecting them to be as fantastic as the nachos and other dishes I've had. But it was totally over priced and didn't come with any rice or beans. The dish mainly consisted of large onions, and a few slices of zucchini. I didn't even eat it. I was really wishing that dish to be a staple for me. They also have to make up their mind, whenever I go in one waitress always lets me change a dish to a vegetarian option and another insists the dishes can not be modified so I'm limited to what I can order when she serves me. This place is a gem in the neighborhood. I got a recommendation for this place when I moved to East Harlem from someone in the neighborhood--always a good sign. I came for brunch a few weeks ago and I had the huevos rancheros which were excellent. My husband and I have been coming here for approx. 6 months now and have never been disappointed. Some of the dishes that we have gotten are the huevos rancheros, mata cuatro, chuletas and a side ofbrazilian cheese bread. In fact, the huevos rancheros is a dish usually only served for brunch but I love it so much that I called them on a Friday evening and was accommodated. Drinks have also been delicious as well, especially the coconut margarita. Ambiance and service is always phenomenal. I came here for my birthday, real cute spot and it was our first time doing the outside dining. We were welcomed with nice cold waters it was so hot out. I really liked how the waiters kept checking up on us. While we were looking at the menu (a QR code you scan with your phone) I kept drinking my water because of the heat the waiter came out to look outside and noticed my empty glass immediately went back inside the restaurant and came out with the water pitcher, little things like that I notice and appreciate because sitting outside under the sun can be a bit uncomfortable so I like how attentive the staff are. The place was pretty busy but are food came right away. I had the salmón on top of zucchini noddles it was one the best salmons I had in a while. So much flavor. My fiancé loved his dish I forgot what he got but I had some and it was so good. We had margaritas which were delicious not too strong just right. The ambiance was nice they had music playing from the restaurant and Then all of a sudden the music switched to Mexican birthday song, and a cute little flan cake comes out with a sombro hat they placed on my head. It was such a surprised. The flan tasted so good we ate it all. I had such an amazing time here definitely a birthday I will never forget. Can't wait to bring my friends here. read more

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Please don't underestimate this tiny Latin restaurant. It truly is a gem in Spanish Harlem. I live around the corner from this family-run bistro, and I discovered it after a friend who also live in the area recommended it. It's so tiny that you might miss it, and there sent that many tables inside. With that being said, it is almost packed every time I eat there, especially during brunch on the weekends. I've eaten in and ordered delivery several times, and have always been satisfied with the exception of the chicken burrito (honestly, you could go to chipotle and get a more flavorful burrito for less). For brunch, I'd recommend the tres leches pancakes or the crab Benedict. Both are spectacular. For lunch, go with the green enchiladas for $10z. And for dinner, their burger (yes I know, it seems kind of odd it order a burger when you can have wonderful Latin food, but trust me it's amazing!) ($16) is kind of pricy but oh so good. This place is amazing!!! It's pretty small, it has like 7 tables, but the food is delicious! We were there for brunch, we had brazilian cheese bread, which are very good. Also, the huevos rancheros with steak; they were great, but I would love a creamy ranchero sauce instead of the one they have. For drinks a margarita on the rocks with salt, and my girl had a mimosa! The margarita was delicious and the mimosa was on point not too much orange juice! Just the way it's suppose to be. We also had the shrimp salad, watercress, tomato, corn, avocado and like 4 grilled jumbo shrimp with a citric chipotle sauce! If you don't eat spicy do not worry if just a pretty small touch of chipotle. For desser: The tres leches cake!, its a pretty good cake, but was dry on the top part. If they could drop a passion fruit sauce or a strawberry sour sauce to kill a little bit of the sweetness of the cake it would be amazing! Customer service is great. We wanted to move because the AC was on blast, but they turned it off instead. Guacamole was really good. Super fresh! I don't even like avocado, but I ate this guac. This is literally the first guac I've continued eating, ever. The shrimp quesadilla came with beans, which I scraped off. After removing the beans the best I could, the quesadilla was really good. The shrimp were crispy and the veggies were fresh. Very savory. Prices are on the expensive side ($10 for guac), but food was worth it. read more

My fiancee and I live a block away and would eat here all the time if it weren't for the fact that we are both trying to eat out less and lose weight. That being said, this is our go to place if we are looking to eat in the area (probably eaten here 5-6 times) I absolutely love this place and the family that runs it. The Ensalada de Pera y Jicama is literally the best salad I have had in NYC. I love the combination of the dates, cojita cheese and pears with the pepitas. It is so good and I always get this. I have also had various tacos which are pretty good as well. My only complain would be that I need more! My fiancee ordered the fried calamari which he said was really good also. I ordered the chorizo brussel sprouts once which had a nice charred taste but were deep fried so not the healthiest option. One time, we ordered the paella, which we thought tasted really nice because of the flavors and all the seafood, but was not really a paella. The taste was great, but seemed more like a rice dish with seafood rather than actual paella. We love this place and highly recommend it! Cocktails are great as well! Adding this note after having brunch for the first time: AMAZING. I got the omelet with corn, cheese, spinach and plantains. I got a side of black beans. The combination of the sweet corn and sweet plantains with the salty beans eggs and cheese was delicious. The side of home fries was a nice addition as well. My fiancee got the hangar steak medium with over hard eggs which he liked a lot. Not my style, because I would prefer medium rare and over easy, but I am sure it would have been great if made that way for me. Love this place! read more

I came in for Sunday Brunch a couple weekends ago and fell in love! Small and cozy but full of charm I felt right at home when I walked in to this little spot with all of maybe 10 tables in it. My mouth watered and my heart was torn as I looked over the menu with so many yummy options. First though I'd like to mention a little super star which was the BEST hot chocolate of my life. Warm and frothy with hints of cinnamon, our waitress was even kind enough to add a splash of cold milk when I explained my adversion to very hot beverages. Ok, moving on....I went for the shrimp diabla with a quinoa risotto while my best friend got eggs benedict over crab cakes. Both were AMAZING! Pefectly cooked with fantastic flavors. The chef really understands how to work the human pallette. Balancing my spicy shrimp with creamy, rich quinoa, topped with a crisp and a bright watercrest salad to bring it all together. And just to add to the gluttony that is brunch, we both then shared TRES LECHES PANCAKES for dessert. Need I say more? I cannot wait to return!!! :-) read more

Had brunch here on a Sunday and it was good. I had the French toast. I generally don't do syrup and my French toast was moist enough on its own decorated with fresh fruit. My fiancée had the steak and eggs and she loved it, said it had great flavor. The restaurant is quaint and has an intimate feel. UPDATE: returned here with a friend of mine who had just finished painting (his day job). They apparently didn't like his attire, gave us a dirty look, and said they didn't have any tables available for us. I saw at least three vacant tables. I moved from Texas to New York York in 2003 and have been on a quest ever since to find some good Mexican food. Found. It. This place is sooooo good, that I weighed the possibility of not writing the 5 star review que meresca este restaurante. Like, I don't want them discovered! I want y'all to keep it to ourselves, ok? Every dish is delicious. But I have to give special mention the huevos Benedictos. Instead of muffins, they use arepas. And there is red chile in the hollandaise sauce.
