If you are looking for a great place to get fresh Italian pasta on the west side of Houston....you need to try Casetta Cucina. This is not a place to eat pasta, it is a place to buy pasta you can prepare at home. It is located in a small and nondescript retail strip center on Campbell Road just north of I-10. Inside this tiny little shop you will find a place to get a cup of Italian Coffee and some pastries. You will also find some outstanding and very authentic Italian sandwiches. They generally have three or four to chose from for lunch. Seating is limited to a table or two inside and a table or two out front. (Yes it is that small.) Taking pride of place is the pasta kitchen, where the fresh pasta and sauces are made. Casetta is owned and run by a husband and wife team. The husband is from Italy and brings his passion for food with him. The available pastas, sauces and sausages are on display in two large refrigerators. Generally, I stop by for a sandwich and get some of the pasta and sauces for later in the week. There about 10 pastas and ravioli to chose from. Since Italians have very firm opinions on what sauces go with each pasta I always ask! For example I select a pasta or two.....then let them select the sauce to go with it. Give it a try. Authentic Italian Food! So glad my mother n law recommended this gem to me! Only Italian place in Houston that reminds me of my time in Italy, I've pretty much been all over Italy but this place gives me a more Florence aka Firenze vibe! Family owned! Interestingly enough the owner is from Florence! Customer service from Rebekah was simply outstanding and reminded me of my time in Florence where I felt as if I was family. They have fresh authentic Italian Ingredients! They have frozen Italian delicacy's you can buy like pastas, Mac n cheese, sauces, Italian sausages and more. They also make their own Italian pasta in house! They have a small coffee section, bread section and authentic Italian imported drink section. I opted in for their fresh sandwiches on focaccia bread I got the prosciutto sandwich and my wife got the caprese. My sandwich consisted of fresh arugula, (I forgot the cheese), prosciutto, balsamic vinaigrette on focaccia bread. The sandwich simply took me back to my time in Florence! If you are looking for authentic pasta with real ingredients straight from Italy...this is the place. No preservatives. The Casetta family provides an extensive education on various products available so you know what you are getting! I was looking for something different and authentic as I have traveled throughout Italy from Milan-Florence-Naples-Rome-Amalfi Coast. So I know what they are selling is the truth!! They are available on the weekends at the farmers market for your convenience or you can stop by their store. The pasta and sauces are frozen. They also have bread available, pizza dough, and sausages from local farmers. What makes them unique is that they have chicken meatballs!!! Of course Beef meatballs are available-Both are marinating in light marinara sauce. Coffee is available and they have daily fresh made sandwiches for lunch. Dessert-Tiramisu This is my go to from now on for pasta and sauce!!! The service was amazing and they offered me a sample of a Biscotti that was to die for...I made the mistake of eating it without coffee because it was so good. This is a great specialty Italian food store for foodies. Just picked up some beef meatballs, pasta, and pasta sauce and I can't wait to dig in. There are floor to ceiling windows behind the counter where you can watch them make the pasta. It was sparkling clean when I stopped by on Friday, but they said to stop by on Mondays if you want to watch them make the pasta. Next time I'm going to try the beef ravioli. read more

Stopped by after shopping next door at Monarch's gift store. Ordered the Caprese sandwich recommended by the staff at Monarch's. Wow, it was delicious. I visited with the owners who gave me a history of their store. I left with freshly made lasagna, an Italian pastry, eggplant parmigiana and mushroom soup. Badass cafe and pasta supply shop. I wouldn't call this a restaurant bc they don't have actual restaurant seating. It's more of a stop and grab a fresh caprese and have an espresso - grab some supplies fresh ingredients for a homemade pasta and get going. Cute little place stocked with lotsa pasta, sauces and other Italian goods. They have sandwiches, croissants, cannolis and panna cotta. Food tastes fresh and authentic. Not Americanized with loads of sugar which I really appreciate. The place is owned by the chef who was raised in Florence and his Canadian wife who he met in Houston which they now call home. Let me tell you about the time that small talk with my optometrist led me to authentic ravioli, hand-prepared by an Italian chef with Michelin-star pedigree. So during said eye appointment, it was revealed to me that there was a classically trained chef from Florence who had previously worked in some pretty impressive kitchens who was selling fresh pasta and sauces at local farmers markets. I was intrigued. After some extensive googling, I discovered Casetta Cucina, a Houston-based catering company helmed by Chef Francesco Casetta and his wife. From what I can piece together, after working at some serious restaurants in Italy including 3-star Michelin Dal Pescatore, the Florence-born chef was recruited to serve as executive chef at the illustrious Tony's, where he presided over the menu for about a year. After an abrupt exit in 2009, he started this company and now exclusively does private catering, corporate events, restaurant consulting and the like. The ubiquity of online reviews has definitely sapped some of the "joy of discovery" from exploring local food scenes, so I was excited about this spontaneous find as I tracked down their booth in Urban Harvest farmers market on a Saturday morning. Unfortunately they were out of a lot of their supply (it was near closing time), but I ended up buying containers of the mushroom-stuffed ravioli and mascarpone sauce. In total, the frozen pasta and sauce cost $23.82, not bad considering it serves two and the ravioli is made from premium low-gluten pasta flour. Preparing the dinner was simple enough. You take the pasta straight out of the freezer and plop it into boiling, heavily salted water. After a couple minutes, fish the ravioli out and toss it with the sauce (heated on stove top) and a splash of starchy pasta water. The flavors and textures here were phenomenal. The ravioli were spongy and dense, and the mushroom filling was perfectly nutty and savory. To say the cheese sauce was decadent would be an understatement. It was silky, creamy, and somewhat sweet, further enhanced by a dash of nutmeg. Good enough to chug on its own. Can't wait to try some of Casetta Cucina's other pasta and sauce varieties, and I will be recommending it to all my gastronomically inclined friends! read more
