I had booked us for two nights but for some reason only one night was showing. The manager jumped on it and made the appropriate changes immediately. Stone, Melinda, Jason and Jslyn were great. Every question answered no matter how silly and they even made me a new key when I had to go back to the room after checkout to retrieve my coffee. The consigner Rina grabbed our luggage cart and took us to our room. She told us about all the local restaurants what to expect with the food and service and the spa services. When I returned to my room to get my coffee the key did not work. the housekeeper cleaning the room across the hall opened the door for me. Brianna in the coffee shop was making me an Americano that I asked for when I realized I had asked for the wrong thing, I just wanted regular coffee. In the middle of making the order she switched to making the regular coffee, no grumbling or body language that indicated irritation just a smile. The most meaningful thing happened at the pool. I was up early writing and had pulled out a very heavy chair to prop my feet on. When leaving I started to put it back. A little old lady Miss Anderson put her hand up to stop me, when I protested she smiled and said no you go on I got this. Rusty Wallace is the general manager of this property and I cannot imagine a better boss because the proof is in his staff. if you ever have a chance to stay here do it. it is worth every penny. What set it apart wasn't simply the beautiful hotel or location -- it was the level of personal care. Ariel at the concierge desk was wonderful. She helped arrange safe airport transportation for my friend when she arrived before me and, when my flight was significantly delayed, made sure she could check in without me. Being stuck traveling and knowing she was in good hands was invaluable. We were welcomed with a personal note, fruit, flowers and champagne, and then surprised with more birthday treats during our spa day. Those thoughtful details made the entire stay feel special. And the SPA! Easily one of the best I've ever visited. Being able to truly relax before and after our treatments -- especially in the beautiful post-treatment lounge -- made it an experience rather than simply a massage appointment. Jessica gave me what was quite literally the best massage I've ever had (and I've had a lot of massages!). Even the little things stood out: complimentary morning coffee delivered through room service and an incredibly kind and helpful room-service attendant. Luxury hotels can have beautiful rooms and impressive amenities. What made Mokara exceptional was how genuinely cared for we felt from beginning to end. The personal touches made all the difference. It was still AMAZING and left me wishing that I could stay longer! My King Room was huge and ultra clean and comfortable! Taking a break from work, I headed to the pool deck, which was small but sufficient and had comfortable chairs to sun in. I remembered an amazing redfish dish from Ostra, enjoyed so many years ago... I really wanted to eat at Ostra again this visit, because I saw redfish on the menu and wondered if it was really as good as my memory of it. I was initially bummed that Ostra was closed for a private event during my stay, BUT my disappointment quickly turned to excitement when I saw the same dish offered on the room service menu. YES!! It was as good if not better than my memory of it! Finally and importantly, the individuals working in valet, front desk, and room service were so service driven and friendly! Overall, I cannot wait to stay at the Mokara again in the hopefully, not so distant future!

The house itself is beautiful but outdated with the wrong furniture. We loved the breakfast that was served each morning but would have appreciated an indoor dining room or at least options for salt, pepper and butter offered along with additional silverware in the room. We really wanted to like this place however, there are many things that need to be updated. The big thing was light that filtered through all the blinds which made it difficult to sleep as the outside porch light had to kept on. The bed in the hummingbird room was way too firm and I didn't sleep well for three nights. The owner Lily was kind enough to cool the room down and provided another fan. The bathtub/shower was too high for me to enter or exit and need my spouse to help - steps are needed. We did like the refrigerator and microwave being available. The hot tub was nice but apparently being deaf we didn't fully hear her state how to remove the cover. I would make updated changes and re-open the B and B. Quiet neighborhood and about 20-25 minute walk to riverwalk. Uber is helpful to use. Lots of restaurants nearby.

With my lease quickly approaching an end, I recently stopped by to tour this property and I left…read morefeeling confused by what demographic they're targeting and underwhelmed just by the finish outs and amenities. First off, to be able to fairly compare these to other units you have to understand their business model, which is to be the T-Mobile of apartments - offering transparent, all-inclusive pricing with no hidden fees. That means no deposit, application fees, cable/internet, electricity, pest control, trash or water fees. The apartments here are 525 sq ft and run $1275 unfurnished. The biggest problem I foresee with these units, is that they feel so outdated compared to a lot of the apartments entering the market. When you enter your unit you walk right into a stacked washer and dryer (no door or anything), you're surrounded by a sea of white appliances and cheap flooring and finish-outs (i.e. no walk-in closet, cheap vinyl-looking countertops). You also can't upgrade the internet or TV packages (which are U-Verse and DirectTV respectfully). The "business center" is really a nook or desk with a single computer and printer and not much room for anything else on it. So why the 2-star review? Am I against transparent pricing? Of course not! But when you look at area apartments you have to wonder who the audience is. Most apartments in the area are offering apartments between 597-729 sq feet at rates of between $785-$999. At these apartments, you have higher levels of finish out like Whirlpool stainless steel appliances, islands with pendant lights, wine racks / coolers, resort style pools, multi-level, full-sized gyms, granite/quartz in the kitchen and bathrooms with decorative backsplashes, updated plumbing (i.e. Moen) fixtures, modern touches (i.e. Nest thermostats, free Amazon Alexas, built-in speakers for bluetooth music streaming, option for gigabit internet speeds), rooftop terraces with expansive views and an actual business center with multiple workstations and room for residents (plural) to sit and work (many in the form of dedicated conference rooms or study spaces in student housing). And by the time you add in fees and other costs you break even if not come out slightly more expensive. It's worth noting that apartments with higher numbers of vacancies don't mind waiving admin and security deposit fees or even giving free months of rent away to fill units and these are available to everyone. So then I started to think maybe students are the target audience with the proximity to UTSA. The issue here is there are a lot of properties and homes popping up catering to students and the finish outs and amenities are getting better and better as well. For instance, for $1125-$1199, one can net a fully furnished unit with gigabit internet, HBO, 50" LED TV and all utilities except electricity paid. This is in an upgraded unit with stainless steel, granite, etc. They also waive admin and deposit fees and give you 1/2 off a month's rent. And this is a 576 sq foot unit. The lady (short, looked like Thelma from Scooby Doo with black hair) giving the tour was telling me that they have the same finish outs and I'm equally concerned about them for competition there too. At $139 (current rate) a night they're more expensive than a king sized suite with sofa bed at the Drury Inn and Suites, $30 less than the king sized room at the all-suite SpringHill Suites and $20 less than the king, 2-room suite at the new Embassy Suites. It's worth noting that this place is literally surrounded by (3) Hiltons and (3) Marriotts (soon to be four) so there's also loyalty programs and pricing that may also make these a more attractive option. In summary, if I were the owner of these apartments/hotels I'd start putting money aside for "refreshing and modernizing" because for a brand new place, the units already look very dated and they're not very competitively priced for the area / level of finish. As a side note, they were telling us that the apartments weren't ready for move-in yet so for now, you'd be staying at the hotel and would get 50% off a month's rent price and move into an actual apartment unit once they're ready.

Besides the usual bed and TV, the room includes a kitchen, fridge, and stove. The only downside is that it can get rowdy outside, which is why they provide earplugs to block out the noise. The basement layout is interesting, since the gym and the comedy club are right across from each other, so close that a bouncer asked me for a ticket to the comedy club, before I let him know I was heading to the gym. Their gym is decent and includes treadmills, a rowing machine, a cycling bike, dumbbells, and benches, along with accessories like medicine balls and resistance bands.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ I'll rebook the Maverick if I am ever in San Antonio again.
