For years Murray Hill's eateries have been a cluster of establishments that only serve college bar food, fast food, and Indian fare. While the latter is usually my choice for most meals, even the best palak paneer and tandoori chicken can't be on semi-daily repeat. Cask gives the neighborhood a nice option to deviate from the norm and has done a steady job for the last few years in providing comfort food and strong cocktails in an intimate setting. The bar is too prominent to ignore, a really ideal solo / duo dining / drinking spot. The happy hour is solid, consisting of an array of craft beers on tap, house wine, and some of their signature cocktails. Their Blood Orange Jalapeno Margarita is a popular choice, but I prefer the Spiced Dark and Stormy, both of which are available for $8. The tasty bar bites are a range of their small plates, much of which is finger foods like lamb nachos, crab crostinis, and cheese steak spring rolls. On the elevated level is where most of the dining happens. The menu at Cask is modern comfort American ranging from a super creamy mac and cheese to a flavorful portion of brussel sprouts. There are some stellar plates worth noting: pork chop, beer battered fish and chips, and a really outstanding grilled whole trout. I would never say no to their burger, which stacks high amongst other burger + fries combos of that price point ($15). There is also a downstairs private room for folks interested in hosting parties or private events. It is a tad cramped for anything more than 20 people but comes with its own private bar. Ventilation is not the best and service can be hit or miss. My vote would be to hang out at the bar, since the bartenders make for good company and a stiff drink -- sometimes simultaneously. read more

Thank you to Dino K. for organizing this UYE here.... Like Cask Bar+Kitchen's design. Cask Bar+Kitchen, has an old woodsy/rustic style. Wood accents definitely dominated here. We sashayed to the lower level and continued with the round up. It's tight downstairs folks- but it was all good. Pat F., Chloe C., Mardory V., and I, inched our way little by little and eventually, set up shop at the bar. Started our night with wine and noshed on a couple of 'Bar Bites', (which were exactly that and nothing more). We shared Grilled Octopus and Crostini with Crab- which were both very tasty. Octopus was precisely grilled and tender and the Crab on the Crostini was sweet, as it should. Mardory V., ordered the Lamb Nachos that were so delicious- which we all shared. I think my biggest complaint of the night, was carrying a conversation- but it comes with the package. It was just too cramped for me. If you're in you're 20s, then Cask Bar is your hot spot. Now this is a place to grab a proper pint! You ever see the outside of an establishment and then wander inside and feel as it you walked into an optical illusion? I felt like we walked into a movie set or somewhere in another country. It takes you away and you feel as you are no longer in NYC for a few hours. What amazing decor and ambience. Dark woods, wrought iron railings, candles, oil lamps, cool hanging filament lighting, all types of antique radios and articles are placed on shelves throughout. Brick walls adorned with old paintings and barrel tops add to the classic comfort feel of this fine bar/restaurant. The lighting is dark and romantic inside, and adds to the overall vibe. Good selection of music playing just tops it off. I put my name on the waiting list and told it would be a 30 minute wait. No problem as we found a few empty seats at the large bar and settled in for a few tasty beers. They carry a real nice selection of craft beers and cask ales. We went for Ommegang Red Voss which is a terrific creamy amber Belgian style beer. The bartenders are super cool here and they gave us samples of a few beers to try and are actually very knowledgeable in describing them. Very friendly and accommodating - always a plus. The hostess came by and told me she had a table ready in the downstairs area. She said if we wanted to wait for another 10 minutes she could hook us up with a better table in the top floor dining area. I thought this was very nice of her and she was so cool about it. We waited and took the better table and it was in a nice spot up against a brick wall. Another girl came by to lead us to our table and offered to take our drinks to it, and even offered hang our coats on the wall rack. I have to admit, the staff here is really friendly and outgoing! Our waiter came by and brought over a half loaf of bread with oil and olive dip, and a bottle of water for the table. Bread is served rustic style on a wood carving board and a big knife. As it was our first time here I asked for a few suggestions. He said the Philly cheesesteak eggrolls were a good starter so we said, why not? These evil creations were melt in your mouth fatty goodness. But, oh my, those dipping sauces! One was a chili mayo based sauce. The other was like liquefied smoked bacon! Oh yeah! We decide to share a few entrees. Baked truffle mac and cheese was rich and creamy. It had a baked breadcrumb top that I love so much. Definitely filling and a lot to eat for one person. Also went with the steak flatbread. This was terrific. Steak sliced and cooked medium rare, red in the middle and moist. On a long flatbread with portabella mushrooms, caramelized onions, red cabbage, and melted gorgonzola spread on the top. It is cut into sections for easy access. Served on a long board with a salad on the end and a light dressing on it. This was just too much food and we could not eat it all. I was waiving the white flag near the end signaling that I had enough. When our waiter came by with the dessert menu we just laughed at him. He was a really good guy. Yes, this meal was a cardiologists delight! If you go here for dinner try to get a spot in the upstairs area. The downstairs also has a bar and small dining area, but not as large or nice as upstairs, but is a cool place to grab a drink. The upstairs has a long communal table right in the middle of the floor which would be great for a group to eat together. The food prices are not too bad and are actually very affordable. The menu selections are what I would call gourmet pub fare. Very good overall. Beers are fairly priced for craft styles. Terrific spot to grab a drink, dine as a couple, dinner with a group. Great staff, attentive bartenders and waiters, friendly hostess. Even as we were walking out everyone said thanks and wished us a good night. Will be back just for the terrific atmosphere and friendliness of the staff. We have to sample more of the great beers and food here! read more

Wow this place was so good that I had to betray my diet a little bit. You are going to love the super chill environment. Whether it's earlier in the day or late at night, you won't be able to tell. The way they set up the lighting, you can really lose yourself in here. That of course is definitely not a bad thing! The food is so dang good here as well! We had the cheesesteak spring rolls which were amazing and I had the most delicious pot pie I have ever had in my life, I kid you not. It was made with steak inside and the base is made from beer! The crust itself will melt in your mouth and is not something you want to miss out on! I highly recommend making a reservation when you come here. They seem to be extremely busy even on weekdays. Cask is one of the few places in Murray Hill that hits the perfect bar/apps/dinner trifecta making you feel right at home no matter your plans. Cask has an extensive (and constantly rotating) menu of craft beers and good wines, and their "rustic" food menu is a force to be reckoned with. Appetizers are reasonably priced and built for sharing, and they deviate from the typical pub fare that's been a stereotype for the area. Entrees won't break the bank either, with a range of around $15-$25 per plate. Needless to say, Cask has been my go-to ever since I moved to Murray Hill, and if you're interested in some proper after-dinner cocktails, head right across the street to Middle Branch...Perfection! read more

Cask-tacular! Really nice place with a good energy, friendly service, a nice (though not overwhelming) beer selection and tasty food. Had dinner with a friend on a Friday night. The place was lively but not shrill. Beers were good, although they ran out of the Six Point I was drinking so I had to switch. They usually have something from a cask and a handful of draughts...well chosen but not extensive and nothing too rare. Their bottles looked good but I'm a draught guy. Service was friendly and easy going...no rushing us but there when we needed something. My buddy had a burger and fries, which astonishingly disappeared within minutes and I had the steak flatbread with blue cheese which was really, really, really, really good. Did I mention it was really good? Restrooms are downstairs and the ceiling is low and the urinals are high. I'm rather short but I rarely have to stand on "en pointe" to deposit my beers but here I was kind of on my toes. Maybe they should keep a step stool for short dudes like me. So when walking in I must say I was getting a good vibe long beautiful wood bar walk up a couple steps and have some beautiful tables in the back it was some what a little bit more quiet until more people came. A place named CASK who is suppose to have their own beer doesn't have beer!! This is gonna suck!! Okay water it is then.. We perused the menu.. So ready for this.. A place who boasts itself as a seafood restaurant has more meat dishes then seafood.. And has a totally different menu on their website.. Strike two.. Whatever so glad we are meat eaters or we would be screwed!! Okay we found what we were going to eat and ordered. First was the grain salad this was so amazing the texture of grains goji berries, nuts, fruit and tanginess of the dressing was amazing Next we ordered the mushroom flat bread and a arugula salad the alas was amazing the flat bread eh not so much I almost think the mushrooms were canned? For our entrees I ordered the short rib this was okay it was very very fatty. I don't think it was cooked enough. The Brussels were delicious. My bf had the salmon. It looked delicious but when cutting it open it was completely raw not like somewhat cooked which is acceptable, it was slimy cold in the middle. Completely unacceptable. Strike three!! Although the waiter was very sweet and took care of it, it still should have been cooked properly. The sides to his dish were perfect cooked and prepared! They gave us our dessert on the house it was a chocolate chip bread pudding which was decadent but by this point we had enough.. The food was great, service was mid but the ambience was pretty nice. I invited a few friends from out of town for dinner and they enjoyed the food. The drinks were decent nothing crazy. Service I would say is mid just because when the waitress would take our order she would just take one/two persons order and then walk away so we'd have to wait till she came back or ask another server for assistance. Our group of ladies gathered here for our Christmas Secret Santa dinner - mainly since their happy hour ends at 8pm - and had a great time! Definitely recommend this spot for a girl's night dinner or catching up with friends! The bar area in the front is a little cramped once the place starts filling up, but the back area where we were seated for dinner was nice and cozy. The food was great! We each ordered a variety of smaller plates and everything was delicious; I really don't think you can go wrong. Caramelized Brussel Sprouts, Pretzel-Crusted Crab Cakes, Truffle Mac & Cheese. YUM. And speaking of happy hour - the St. Murray cocktail is to die for! It's sweet but potent - totally snuck up on me, and when is St. Germain ever a bad idea? Definitely looking forward to going back to Cask - for drinks and food. My oh my... This place's food is fabulous. We ordered Roasted Lamb Nachos and it was awesome. Perfect! The nachos were freshly made or gave the impression that it was freshly made. The lamb (shredded) was soft, tender, and tasty. The combination of both made the dish Perfect! We had other dishes, they were good. But none of them gave me the unforgettable impression as the Roasted Lamb Nachos. The ambiance was great, and the service was great too. Very good place to hang out and to have dinner with friends... What a great place my friend recommended. I took a video of the food (that Yelp won't let me attach to this review via the app?) and I wish I had taken photos. First- Oyster happy hour! $1.50 each until 6pm. A really good deal. We started with a dozen of those and devoured them so quickly that we didn't get to enjoy them alongside the suggested bottle of rosé. We did end up ordering a bottle of rosé which was cost efficient for two people. I ordered the blackened fish tacos & my friend order the mushroom flatbread and the margherita flatbread to go. The tacos were DELICIOUS! I'm always cautious about ordering tacos from upscale places like this because the cost rarely matches the quality. But they surpassed my expectations! After 700+ reviews what more can I say? Cask Bar & Kitchen is good, they know what they're doing over there in Murray Hill. We had such a solid meal - I really don't have any major complaints... our waiter was super attentive and so nice, the atmosphere is so energetic, and the food was overall really good! A couple things you should definitely try: truffle mac and cheese (nom nom - cheesy and totally truffly), the brussel sprouts (I am so not a bs fan... but when mixed with chorizo and cheese - I could eat them all day). Both dishes were big enough for 4 of us to each get a good potion too. But here are a few constructive things to share + info for those headed to dinner there soon: The place is LOUD. At one point my one of my friends was across the table telling a story to the rest of us and I honestly have no idea what the middle of the story was about. Between the music and all the wood/hard surfaces the place is really loud. The champagne dressing on my salad was very acidic. I just didn't love it. The rest of the salad though - Roasted Pear w/ baby greens, goat cheese (I subbed out the bleu), toasted hazelnuts + chicken ($16) was yummy. I do wish they had cut up the pear for me. I know that sounds like I'm just being a baby... but that pear with its waxy skin was hard to cut with a butter knife. The doughnuts we had for dessert were a great choice given the frigid temps outside - who wouldn't want to enjoy warm donuts on a cold night! These treats had a nice crunch and flavor on the outside but lacked anything on the inside. It would have been nice if the kitchen could maybe mix in some cinnamon to the batter rather than just roll it in afterwards. Those criticisms weren't bad, right? A cute, romantic spot great for happy hour, catching up with friends, or a date. This place is deceptively large! It's easy to miss from the outside; I was looking for it and still walked right on past. There's an upstairs and downstairs bar, so when the main floor fills up (and it definitely did when I was there for happy hour on a Friday), you can migrate south! Happy hour includes $5 draught beers, $6 Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir, and $7 cocktails. The Pinot Grigio was meh, but their cocktails were great! Their jalapeño margarita is a MUST-TRY! The draft beer was incredibly tasty and I had to close my eyes to savor the first sip. The service was extremely pleasant. We had the signature pulled pork sandwich but unfortunately, it was just so-so. The meat wasn't that juicy and the bread was neither memorable nor toasted. I had two glasses of the red sangria and was in heaven. To start, my friend and I split the Cocktail Trio that comes with 2 Jumbo Shrimps, 2 small Lobster Tails and Lump Crab. Sooo good - the lobster was my fav! It's a small plate so I wouldn't recommend ordering for more than two people. For dinner, I had the Wild Mushroom flat bread w/ mushrooms, spinach, mozzarella and Parmesan truffle oil - it was so filling and tasty. My friend and I met at 6:30 on a Thursday and by the time we left at 8:30ish there was a wait so I'd try to get here a little early if possible. Came here for a quick small dinner with a friend. We were seated downstairs where there are a few tables and a full bar. Very cool. Could imagine hosting a small party down there. We ordered the beef and guiness pie ($17). I was a little disappointed by this. I'd say that it was 50% gravy and 50% actual substance. The food tasted good, but there simply wasn't enough. I wasn't trying to get a soup (actually told my friend I didn't want to get the soup of the day). We also got the crispy brussel sprouts. I feel like there again was an aggressive amount of sauce on them, but they tasted really good and they were perfectly crispy. The servers here was AMAZING. Very attentive and friendly. They didn't rush us out and they were just some of the best customer service people I've ever encountered. Happy hour is 3 - 7. Unfortunately I didn't partake cause I'm trying to do a dry January (ugh). They have some cans of beer for $5 and you can add on a shot for $3 of whiskey / rye for $3. Their house drafts are $6 and wine is $7. Then they have some cocktails for $8. Not bad. I went here on a Wednesday night to meet a friend from college. I loved the decor and the lighting was low with candles. There was a communal picnic style table, which I'm usually not fond of- but the spaces in between parties were very spaced out. So I loved it! We had a guy named Michael taking our order. He was excellent and fun . We got the chicken wings, which were good.....steak spring rolls, which were AMAZING.... and the Brussels sprouts, that were very good but heavy. I ordered a white sangria which I was disappointed with, which is why I gave 4 stars. On the drink list it said "homemade" ...which I always get excited about. Cask is an excellent restaurant, especially for date night. The ambiance is warm, with a good number of seats at the bar, followed by tables toward the back. Service was phenomenal -- the hosts who helped me get a table were incredibly friendly and accommodating. And our server was excellent, he had good recommendations and kept an eye on our table without hovering or rushing us. We split a few starters rather than getting a full meal, and there was still plenty of food with the portions they serve. The truffle mac and cheese was phenomenal - really cheesy with a hint of garlic in the flavor that put it over the top. And the coconut curried mussels were excellent, served with all the trimmings, including delicious crispy bread for dipping in the unique broth. The perfect spot for a date or just a meetup with your friends. Finally came here with 2 of my gfs on a weekday for dinner. We attempted to eat here 2 other times...however the wait was too long and we were too hungry. It was pretty crowded again but decided to wait this time (heard good things about this place). The ambience is great and the decor is nice. It's pretty dim inside...looks like an intimate setting. Food: was excellent! Upon sitting down they give you some bread with olive oil. We ordered a flatbread to share (was pretty decent) & we each ordered our own entree. After pondering about what entree to get, I decided to try the pan seared scallops (I love scallops!!). The scallops were cooked perfectly. The portion is actually pretty small...but was tasty! My friends ordered the roast chicken and salmon and they enjoyed their meal as well. Arrived around 9:30pm for a dinner with three friends. We settled on tuna tartare, veggie burger, margarita flatbread, bolognese pasta, squash salad and pan seared salmon. Yeah, it's a lot for four girls LOL and we did think we ordered a bit much at first but..... we basically devoured... everything. Everything tasted great but my fave was the veggie burger hands down. It's not heavy and greasy like a regular burger but highly flavorful at the same time. On to the salad, I'm not the biggest fan of squash but that salad reallyyyyy did it justice. Pan seared salmon and tuna tartare were prepared to perfection. Least favorite was the flatbread but that was cause everything else was just that good. For drinks, which were all served in a timely manner, we ordered two gin and tonics, a pitcher of red sangria and four tequila shots to end the night. Had dinner here last night. Restaurant was not busy. WORST MEAL I've ever had in NYC. We waited 40+ minutes and were served cold fried cauliflower appetizer. Had to ask and wait for aioli that was to come with it. Waited another 30+ minutes and was served fish that probably was not fried that day - seemed it had been baked to reheat. Was hard as a rock. Served with soggy, cold fries. Trivia sound was blaring all the way to the back of the restaurant clashing with very loud bad 70s music so we couldn't talk to one another. The bathroom was absolutely filthy. I've been in cleaner portapotties. They weren't even busy! We were one of maybe 3 tables. I would give it zero stars but Yelp doesn't allow. Paid $50+ pp for it. Went to Cask the other night and had a fantastic time. I really enjoyed the décor because this place had a warm and cozy feeling from the dark wood and dim lights. I met up with a few of my friends. I was pleasantly surprised Cask has a great selection of beers and wine. They also offer the standard drinks and some interesting mixed drinks. Service was great! The bartender was a really nice guy and so attentive. He made sure everyone was taken care of and he didn't miss a beat even when it got really busy. They offer a great menu but you should try to make reservations if you want to have dinner there. We got there about 6:30p and thought we could just have drinks and get a table right away but there was a 2 hour wait for a table. So we did the next best thing. We ate at the bar all six of us and we really all enjoyed everything. I would definitely go there again but will make reservations for dinner in the future. read more

It's almost as if you're a dinner guest from the Game of Throne's 'Red Wedding' episode, the bar/restaurant has a similar scene in terms of surrounding wooden benches, chairs, tables, walls and etc. It even has a long communal table in the middle for large parties. It feels as if you're transported back in time where the Kings and Queens still rule the Earth. After reading some yelp tips, we ordered the cheese steak spring rolls with a bbq chipotle and blue cheese dipping sauce. I had high hopes for this appetizer, but sadly, it didn't reach any of my expectations. The grounded meat and cheese inside were a little mushy. Yuck. This is something I would expect from a frozen box, but not here. My friend ordered the steak and I got the burger with onions and fries. Though the 700+ reviews speak volumes already, I have to reiterate how much I love this place. Cask is the one restaurant I can say is my favorite without hesitation. Every meal I have here makes me tear in happiness. I've been coming here for at least 5 years now, but no meal or drink has ever disappointed me despite the other aspects that could terribly mar the experience. The crowds and noise here can turn away the faint of heart. It's not obnoxious bar games noise, but a very deafening hum from the sheer numbers that seem to overwhelm this place after 7p. (happy hour is already over by then guys!) The wait for a dinner table for a party under 4 ppl can also make you cringe. Once you're on the other side of that, though, it's heaven. Stellar as always. 25 minute wait for 3 people on a Thursday night, but I'm used to that by now. This time I shared the mussels, crab crostini, prosciutto and Fig flatbread, Mac n' cheese, and paccheri pasta, followed by the chocolate brownie with ice cream and caramel and peach meringue tart. The mussels were fantastic, as was the mushroom pasta, but the crostini isn't too special. Loved the flatbread but I think the truffle one is better. The Mac continues to be one of my favorites in the city. Amazing desserts, too! I want to try the cheesesteak egg rolls but they don't seem to be on the menu right now... read more

Fun time the Irish bartender was AMAZING. Definitely going back with more people next time.

This place is crowded and our waitress was in a hurry to get us out. We came as a group of around 15 people and our waitress tried her best to be nice but she was overwhelmed I guess. The food was okay not the best. I got the tuna tartare and the mushroom flatbread. The tuna tartare was good but I love anything with avocado. All of our food lacked salt. I also had the jalapeno blood orange margarita and it was okay not the best I had. The food was not bad but I guess it's just not worth coming back here a second time. read more

I just had Sunday brunch with my friends and my husband at this restaurant and I absolutely loved (almost) everything about it! Not only were the prices very reasonable (about $10-15 a plate for HUGE entrees), the place was nearly empty at 12 noon. (Although it ended up being far more crowded around 1 pm). I would definitely go back! Pros: -Very nice looking restaurant, with decently spacious seating and a very nice, clean bathroom. -They gave us an AMAZING little muffin basket to munch on for free while we waited for our food. It was one of the best bread baskets I've ever had -- so incredibly sweet, soft, and tasty! -Great service -- waitress and bussers were very attentive about bringing us water, our bill, refills of all kinds, etc. -Fantastic food -- I highly recommend the hangover sandwich -- so tasty and filling! -- and the GIANT platter of amazing blueberry pancakes. Those alone were worth the price of admission -- they were so fluffy, soft, and delicious! Cons: -I wish the nutella french toast had more, well, nutella on it. The top part had a huge layer but the bottom pieces of toast had very little. So that felt unbalanced, although the dish was still good. From the get to it took a while for us to get water once we sat down. I eventually hailed a waitress as she walked by and was able to get drinks and an appetizer (which took way too long to receive). The Brussel sprouts were pretty good, but everything after ruined it. They took away our silverware and never replaced them before we got our entrees 25+ minutes later. We had multiple servers check on the food and our second round of drinks was almost as bad. Super disorganized and really upsetting overall. Entrees came so late we had to take them to go and the chicken sandwich almost tasted undercooked. read more
