I stepped in last night after work to meet a few girl friends for happy hour. Happy hour is 4-8pm. It was pretty crowded and I liked the little seating area near the bar. I didn't take a full walkthrough of the place to really cage its size and decor. The menu had some good choices. I just shared 1 small plate with a friend, the grilled avocado was $9. It had corn and mayo. I'm not a big mayo fan but I was able to get past it. The dish was tasty but I think it needed salt. I was also surprised it wasn't even a full avocado it was only half. If I was going to order the flatbread ($13?) I would've ordered the bruschetta. I enjoyed the white wine sangria ($7) it was a nice size glass . It was probably one of the best white wine sangrias I ever had. I loved the strawberries in it, my friend was drinking the red and she said it was too sweet. Gster and I were on our own, as our tourguide Patch was taking a night off. Gster and I can never ever agree on dinner places (or much of anything for that matter). After finding Cask online, I was obsessed. The affordable prices is what sold Gster. We tumbled throguh the snow a few blocks, and were greeted by the most cozy, intimate, charming atmosphere. Just by walking in and feeling the ambiance, I wanted to have every meal here the rest of my life. The walls are exposed brick, with beatuiful wooden beams. You feel like you are in an upscale country barn. There are beautiful lanterns hanging from the ceiling, with mason jar lamps all around. The decor is farmish, and very rustic but high class country (if that exists). The tables are long and wooden, and some are family style. Everything is intimate, rustic, ornate, and just stunning with charm, beauty. I felt like I knew the personality of this restaurant within just a few minutes. My favorite part, was the delicate little vases of babys breath and simple herbs on each of the tables. A simple touch, that created such elegance that I have never seen before. We had to wait a bit for a seat, so we sat at the bar. I got a sangria for my 10th time this week. Even though it was freezing cold, snowy, and windy, I was on SpringBreak 15! Had to get my sangria. The drinks were very good, and the bar was bubbly with young professionals, dates, and cheerful moods. The whole charisma just uplifted my spirits. For meal, I got the angel hair pasta in pink vodka sauce. I really couldn't decide between that and the mac and cheese, but i was so thankful for my choice. The vodka sauce was one of the best I ever had, with so much flavor, creamy but still light. It melted in my mouth, and my mouth is watering again just thinking of this experience. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that Cask is serving brunch now. The waitress (who by the way was really cute) told us that they just started serving brunch a few weeks ago. I had the hearty fritatta and my GF had the mushroom flatbread. Both were good. One funny incident - there was an older lady who was dining by herself. Next thing you know, she takes a picture of us and then asks us if we planned on taking a picture of her. Of course, we said no, but she then goes on about the conspiracy to get her. Throw in a few random shouts of "You are all perverts" and "You should just turn yourself in" and that made for a truly memorable brunch. read more

Used to live nearby so I came a lot. In the last 2 years they've probably turned their menu over 3 times or so. I don't know why they keep changing, its actually a little annoying especially when you go on a trek across town to go just to find that they've changed something again. Thankfully the staples like the lamb nachos have remained (although now they only appear on the bar menu - i still asked for them at the tables though which they were happy to accommodate). They did get rid of the short rib which was disappointing. The fish and chips are pretty good and the fries are outstanding but only 2 pieces of fish leaves you wanting more...feel like you could add a 3rd and then the value would really be there. Dessert-wise, they doughnuts are a must. However, I will admit, this is one of the items that keeps (frustratingly) changing. They used to be plain spherical doughnuts, served hot with a crispy exterior rolled in granulated sugar (version 1). Then they changed them by adding some sort of jam inside (not a fan - version 2). Then they changed again by making them more biscuit shaped with powdered sugar on the outside and jam on the inside (version 3). I recommend telling them no jam and ordering some vanilla ice cream on the side. Thankfully the flavor is still there, although i will admit i miss the super crispy exterior of the original doughnut version 1's. Im a texture guy - sue me. I came here around brunch time with a party of 4 on a Saturday and there was no wait for our table; awesome! The restaurant definitely has a romantic feel due to the dim lighting, dark wood furniture and the candlelights. The food here is delicious and affordable. The menu is of good length in that you won't be flustered with the amount of options they have to offer. I had the avocado omelette and I asked to substitute the bacon with another meat choice and the waiter said it could be done with no problems, or extra charges, at all. The staff is very friendly and attentive and I cannot wait to return here with other friends to show them the place and try the other things on the menu. My girlfriend and I were in a pinch on a Thursday night. She got out of class really late and it was nearly 10:30pm. We wanted to have a nice date night but couldn't think of a place that would still be open that we would enjoy. Yelp came to the rescue and we found this place. We walked right in and walked to the back to the dining area. It's quite dimly lit here but look around and enjoy the wooden decor. We got a table almost immediately and were served with a bottle of wine right after we ordered it. The tables aren't too close which is a huge plus! The menu was amazing and we had the lamb nachos, bruschetta flatbread and sliders. ALL OF IT WAS AMAZING. The nachos was our favorite with the sriracha! This might be my new neighborhood spot for drinks! Great happy hour M-F from 4-8pm. There are that many "nicer" places to grab a drink in the 'hood', but this is a great option. It was packed on a Thursday evening. The bartenders are really nice and definitely know their drinks. Plenty of beers on tap and pretty good wine selection. The apple torte dessert I tried was also really good. My friend tried the short ribs and seemed to enjoy them. A nyc favorite already. Cask embodies all of the elements I look for in a bar & kitchen: a killer cocktail list, grade A wines & beers, delicious food, friendly staff and inviting interior. It's classy without going over the top. I sipped down 2 cocktails, which I'd recommend in a heartbeat. They included the Miss Sarajevo (Tanqueray Gin, muddled strawberries, St. Germain, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup) and Blood Orange Martini (Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur, Absolut Citron, blood orange puree, fresh lime juice). Cask's food also blew me away! The Pretzel Crusted Lump Crab Cake (w/ cucumber linguine, roast tomato remoulade) made for a nice app and didn't taste as pretzel-y as I had anticipated. Then for my main, I went for the Orecchiette Pasta that came w/ sweet Italian sausage, sundried tomatoes, spinach & parmesan broth. That pasta didn't stand a chance! I didn't leave one bit behind. If you want something more meaty, I'd suggest their Steak Flatbread, which was presented on a nice wooden slab. To make matters better, they are even quite affordable. I will be back again and again! I think this is a nice little gem in Murray Hill. Not exactly the hippest of areas but the food and atmosphere here is great. The entire space is candlelit with a nice mixology bar that seems to use fresh ingredients (the cucumber gin drink is good). I wouldn't say there is anything terribly special on the menu but everything is done well. The steak is flat bread was good, truffle mac and cheese, mussels. Nothing is light but if you want something particularly unhealthy, the philly cheese steak spring rolls are great. Everything seems like it was done not to be conspicuous just good. read more

This was the perfect spot to meet up with some college girlfriends. I felt like we were Sex and the City once we had our awesome cocktails! We all wanted to go somewhere new and different, and this fit the criteria. We had dinner for 4 at 8:30 on a Friday night, which was a great decision to get our night going. It is in a convenient location in Murray Hill. For cocktails, I started with the Rite of Spring (gin based) and later got the The Standard (vodka based). Both were enjoyable and strong without the alcohol taking over the drink. These drinks were worth it for about $10 each! Buzz was on. The bread they give you is addicting, so proceed at your own risk. I would have loved to take some of this home via purse, but my inner Carrie told me to keep it classy. For dinner I had the caramelized brussel sprouts and cask chopped salad. Sure got my full intake of greens for the evening! Both were fresh and delicious. We had a really fun time here and I thought the food was spot on. There is a pretty cool booth right when you get past the bar on the right. It has its own set of steps and a railing. Mental note to request that specific table going forward. The dim lighting in the back makes it romantic, so I would mark this as a date spot as well. I am in love with this place and foresee myself being a regular at this cute Murray Hill spot. Since we had to wait ~45 minutes for a table, we ordered the blood orange jalapeno margarita and vodka cocktails. Can't remember the vodka cocktail name, but it had strawberries and mint leaves in it. Both cocktails were excellent and had the perfect alcohol level! As for our dinner, the portions are very generous. We didn't think that 2 appetizers and 1 entree would be so much, but it was (in a good way). We ordered the truffle mac and cheese, lamb nachos, and burger. Everything was delicious and well-crafted. The mac and cheese was perfectly al dente and seasoned nicely. However, it was not the best I've had and slightly lacked in flavor for me. Would still recommend though. Lamb nachos were so unique and I've never seen anything like it in other restaurants. It was sort of like a Mexican-Asian fusion dish. This was really good, and I don't normally like fried foods. Burger was above average. The meat was tender and seasoned really well. The fries that came with it were addicting. All in all, this place gets 4 stars for the food and drinks and 5 stars for the service. My overall experiences here (been here twice) have always been great. My only gripe is that they don't take reservations of parties with less than 4 people, and the wait can get pretty long during the weekends. read more

Came here after reading all of the rave reviews. This place is good, however I was a little disappointed considering my high expectations. We started off by sharing the mac and cheese and the mussels. The mac and cheese was very good, however I found the mussels to really lack depth of flavor. I can't put my finger on it, but the broth was lacking some acidity and led to a somewhat bland flavor. Lemon helped, but still not as good as many other places in the city. Normally the best part is soaking up the broth with the bread, but here it didn't seem to appealing. Then I got the burger. The burger was good, not great. Ordered it medium rare but it came out at least medium. Not a huge deal as it happens all the time, but was still hoping for a little closer to what I ordered. Burger itself was pretty good. The pickled onions are a nice touch.. My girlfriend had the pasta with mushroom ragu and it was good - would probably order it if I went back. Brownie dessert was delicious as well. A few friends and I stopped by for dinner off the bar bites menu on a Friday evening. For some reason I was under the impression this place was small, but it was bigger than I expected with a lower level. Dimly lit, but loud; we didn't mind except for that woman with a terrible, ear splitting laugh next to us. Good place to come with a group or a date. Service was pretty friendly and attentive. Get their cheesesteak spring rolls! Crispy on the outside, savory and meaty on the inside. We wished we got 2 orders of this instead of 2 orders of lamb nachos. Lamb nachos were underwhelming because the lamb was pretty bland and seemed a little out of place. We looked at the 2nd plate with regret, but my friends still cleaned them up. We also got their meatballs, covered in a layer of melted cheese - pretty good. There was a nice selection of beer and wine, and I tried the Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar for the first time. Sooo good! My time at Cask was disappointing. It has so much potential. Nice design and layout, good looking menu and fun cocktail list. Execution however was where it fell short. On a positive note, my Bulleit Manhattan was quite nice and served in a cool glass. I was able to walk with it and not spill it. Good touch. The Bourbon Smash I had however had not even the slightest hint of bourbon and was pretty disappointing. We ordered the flatbread and the brussel sprouts. The flatbread texture and flavor was doughy, not crisp and underwhelming. The sprouts didn't have any browning and the chorizo didn't really add anything to the flavor. Both very missable items as far as I'm concerned. The beer selection here is ok. You can find some craft brews but nothing too exciting. On a final note, our server could not have been more uninterested in helping us out. This sort of behavior just annoys me and will keep me from coming back to a place. read more

Yay! I AM a fan of Cask Bar + Kitchen. I want to give it 3.6 stars. Here's the thing. You see, I'm kind of a jerk about music. Or particular...whatever it is you want to call it. When I walk into an establishment and the first thing I hear is Dave Matthews, I fear that the demographic will be, um, uh (to put it not so delicately) a bunch of frat boys who've graduated but not yet grown up? Anyways, so my very particular jerk self walked in and Dave Matthews was on and I was immediately all "...uh oh this is going to be real bad." But it wasn't! It was good. Here's why: -despite the bar/restaurant's lackluster wine/drink list, my super girl-y blood orange concoction was delicious -the staff was super friendly and attentive, from the bartender to the host to our server and the busboys/food runners -the ambiance was fantastic. super pretty. all filament light bulbs and brick walls and old oak and dark and cozy and glowy. -the food was good. aside from my risotto being a bit glue-y, it was really solid, well done, higher-ish end bar food. um...and the portion sizes? kind of out of control. (this was both good and bad, as we couldn't really take our leftovers with us...) -the music improved considerably over the duration of our visit! now it's radiohead! woot! I wholeheartedly recommend the seafood trio appetizer. The crab, lobster, and shrimp were all quite fresh and well-prepared. My scallop dish was excellent (save for the risotto), but the amalgamation of flavors present in the dish really seemed to work. My mister's short ribs were delicious, but like I stated previously, the portion size was seriously out of control. My biggest gripe about this place is the lack of selection in the wine and drink department. The beer selection was *okay*, but the bar seriously wanted for a few more craft cocktails, as the ones they had were puzzling. (Jim Beam/raspberries/mint?) And wine? Pretty meh. Seriously meh. Atmosphere: 4/5 Yikes! This place is really nice actually. From the outside I wasn't impressed but inside it's dimly lit and has a little bit of a loungey feel to it. The front has a few seats and a long bar with easily accessible bar tenders. In the back there are several tables and a really cool long table in the middle where you can just sit and drink. They have a great selection of wines and beers as well. Service: 4/5 They are fantastic. The bartenders, hostesses, everyone. Water was given without us having to ask even though we weren't eating, and the servers came back often enough, but not too often. Perfect amount of spice and cinnamon. Topped with roasted marshmallows - divine. Beet salad with creme brulee goat cheese? Awesome. Lamb burger - great. A little on the small side though... I had the garden omelette my first time, and portabella benedict the second and both times I was able to finish about half before I started to feel like I was going to burst. Both also came with home fries and small salad, and at ~$10 per dish, I feel like this was some pretty good value. Solid in taste and quality as well. I was here for dinner last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. This was the first time I've sat downstairs and I have to say the vibe of the whole bar/restaurant is very trendy. We sat at these high tables on wooden benches/ chairs and started the meal off family style. We were a big group of 10 and we ordered 2 of every small plate on the menu and each of us tried a different cocktail. The best small plates by far were the grilled octopus - which was tender and light, the roasted potatoes - which were drench in a savory sauce and pan roasted, and the ribs - which melted in your mouth. My least favorite were the sashimi tuna with citrus. The plate was beautiful but I found this item lacking in flavor and substance. The Mac'n'Cheese was also not my favorite, the menu description made it seem like it would be amazing, but it was a bit soupy. The list of cocktails is extensive and Even includes beer cocktails. I tried two different spicy margaritas and they were perfect. Not too sweet with a nice kick. For dinner I had the Salmon and it lived up to its hype. I'm definitely a fan of crispy Salmon skin and the beans they paired with the dish were smooth and buttery. Overall, this was a great experience for a Tuesday night birthday dinner and I wouldn't mind coming back to try the oyster happy hour. read more

This past weekend a group of friends and I went to Cask for brunch for the first time since they began doing a bottomless/party brunch with a DJ. I am a vegetarian and had been to Cask a number of times previously for brunch and always had a decent experience. This time, I asked for the breakfast burrito without bacon and was told they could not make any modifications. Unless the burritos are premade and frozen, there is no reason they could not easily accommodate this request for someone with dietary restrictions. I asked multiple times and was told they absolutely could not do it and were not particularly nice about it. The only other entree option for vegetarians was avocado toast, which I did not want and was forced to order for the bottomless brunch deal which the entire table is required to get. As far as avocado toast goes, it was mediocre at best. It was a very strange experience particularly in NYC which is generally accommodating to vegetarian diets. Cask is not a large restaurant and there is no good reason they should prohibit easy modifications. I would avoid this spot if you have any dietary restrictions. read more

So, Murray Hill has a dearth of good restaurants. Funny enough, it also has a dearth of discerning yelpers. It took me a while to find places I could actually enjoy and Cask is one of them, with some caveats. If I had written this review when I first discovered the place, I would have knocked it down a star due to the OSHA violating noise levels. Thankfully, they installed some noise reduction foam in the ceiling (and dressed it up nicely) so it's now at least possible to sit without being uncomfortable, but it's still raucous most nights. But, it's worth noting that the food is good here. If you want dinner and drinks, this is the place. Desserts? Eh. Their charcuterie is geared towards people who don't really know cheese or dried meats: selection is limited to classics like "cheddar" and "blue". The beer selection is solid, the cocktails are good, the wine selection is acceptable. The entrees are hearty and filling mostly. The flat bread pizzas are delicious. It's a place to get a good dinner and a drink during a weeknight. It really doesn't do anything else all that well, and it's super crowded on weekends. read more

This place was a disappointment. It's gorgeous inside and appears to be a great place to enjoy some craft beer and good food. As a beer geek, the beer list was really good. Great selection of good craft beers. But the bartender didn't know anything about the beers which was a disappointment. The bartender didn't know what one of the taps was and when he found out from the other bartender, he was wrong. The beer was typical in price and they did have a 2 cask ales which is great. As for food, this place missed the boat big time. My girlfriend and I ordered a few small plates from the menu. Most of the items were rather expensive for a pub. Plus it appeared that you had to order side dishes for your entrees which you only find in really high-end restaurants in NYC. I've been to a lot of bars and restaurants in Manhattan and have never been this disappointed in a restaurant's food primarily because it has such potential. The food was just ok. Nothing special. But the menu makes you think it will be excellent. Great dishes, poorly executed. One dish we had was steak on a flatbread which we asked for medium and it came out almost burnt. Then when we did get it back it wasn't even that good. I've had skirt steak and similar steak from less impressive places that was better. I'm really upset because this has such potential. This place is always busy. So I think that says a lot. The place is massive - there is a long bar, and towards the back, lots of table seating for diners. Expect at least an hour wait though from when you put your name down to actually being seated if you're going for dinner. The food is AMAZING. I was pleasantly shocked at how amazing it was. We got the mac n cheese, tuna and salmon tartare, philly cheesesteak spring rolls and kale ceasar salad. The small plates are pretty small so you can probably order a few on top of an entree if you wanted (for a party of 2). The food also came out super fast. The crowd is a relatively "older" one for Murray Hill - late 20s, 30s and even 40s. Nice Ambiance, But Food Looks Better on the Menu Than In Front of You. I was pretty excited when I entered Cask last night. The setting was very nice, and they were still serving food at midnight. The menu looked very good with the cured meats, burgers, flatbreads, and other big plates. Our group ordered: - Cured Meat appetizer (choice of 3): sopressata, prosciutto, & chorizo. All were not great. - Burger and the Lamb Burger. Wow, both were cooked well done and charred when medium rare was requested. These items should have been sent back to the kitchen. - Truffle Mac & Cheese. Generous inclusion of truffle bits, but the white cheese was too watery and saucy. It wasn't creamy enough, but the truffle aroma was nice. If the dish were creamy, it has potential to be great. I liked the top bread crust layer. - Flatbread. Reminded me of the surfboard shaped flat bread pizzas from Waldy's. I didn't try any, but it looked disappointing here. - Philly Cheesesteak Spring Rolls. These were good! The beers are expensive (~$9.50), so you're basically paying up for the atmosphere. Cask is a good late night date place, but don't believe the reviews that say the food is amazing because it is not. Came here last night with a few friends and had a great time. Immediately when you walk into Cask Bar and Kitchen, you feel as though you've been transplanted to the east village. The restaurant is dimly light and has a vase of fresh flowers and herbs at each table. To echo what other reviewers have said, this place is very much unlike other bars in Murray Hill. This sentiment comes from someone who desperately hates this area of Manhattan. Cask had a huge number of beers on tap and a great happy hour deal lasting till 8 PM. My friends and I had two bottles of $24 pinot noir and I believe that was the bottle price for a few other whites and reds. As resident fatty, I also had a crock of french onion soup and then split the truffle mac and cheese with a friend. The french onion soup was excellent-- the gruyere was particularly copious, which I always hope for. The top of the cheese was slightly less crispy and burnt than I prefer, but I think that's a matter of taste. The truffle mac and cheese was also really good. It was cheesy, thick, and also came in a relatively large portion. I was really full after the soup and appetizer, but there were a variety of other things I would've loved to try-- the cheese and meat plates and philly cheesesteak spring rolls sounded particularly delightful.
