We've been coming to Cannon Beach for over 15 years, sometimes twice a year. We mostly cook in, but will venture out for a meal or two during our weeklong stay. We have visited nearly every restaurant in town at this point. How we have not been to Castaways until tonight is beyond me! We've had some decent meals in Cannon Beach over the years but rarely anything memorable...until tonight. Wow. We have found our go-to dinner spot! The creativity, the flavors, the kind and helpful service...it was perfect. We enjoyed both specials, sea scallops and red curry prawns, the crab fritter appetizer and the blood orange margarita. I recommend making a reservation. Even in the off season, even for a party of two. A couple came in right ahead of us without one and were unable to be seated tonight. We have been here 3 times to give it a try and each and every time we have been turned off. The first time we tried the hostess was rude. The second time we came for a drink and the Chef/Owner was snide. The third time we came in there was no room at the bar, so we said we would come back. We came back in an hour, plenty of room at the bar, and we sat down to order. The Chef decided that he was done and didn't want to serve anymore, even though our friends that were sitting at the bar since before we left the first time had still not received their food and it was still another hour until their posted hours said that they would close. amazing that they are in business. read more

My husband and I decided to try Castaways on our last night of vacation in Cannon Beach and it did not disappoint. Since the hours of the restaurant are not posted on the yelp page, my husband called and he got an answer on the second ring. Since the bartender/hostess was available to answer the phone quickly we decided they couldn't be too busy yet. (It was six when we called and we beat the rush that night by maybe ten minutes.) The restaurant is small. Just a few tables plus the bar so either go early or late. There were two people working front of house that night, the woman bartender and a man who acted as our host and waiter. We both got the rum punch (which was only $5!). It was delicious. My husband order the jambalaya (top of the spicy scale) and I had the house Mac and cheese Cajun style. My Mac and cheese was great. I was worried it would be too much cheese, but I was wrong to worry. The pasta shells are in a creamy cheese basil sauce that also works well with the chicken and andouille sausage. I also loved the crunch of the bell pepper. I even ate all the mushrooms in the dish as well and I'm not usually a mushroom person. My husband's jambalaya was very interesting (in a good way). The rice is served in the center of the plate with the jambalaya surrounding it. It reminded my husband of curry with the use of the basmati rice. He loved it and not a bit remained of it on his plate. The portion sizes are a bit large. I took the last bit of my pasta home with me. So if you are not supper hungry I'd consider going with a small plate or sharing. I will be coming back here the next time I visit Cannon Beach. read more

Tried this place based on reviews and it did not disappoint. I absolutely loved it! I had the ahi tuna and my husband had the filet mignon. He said it was one of the best steaks he's ever had. Their rum drink was also amazing (not to mention STRONG), as well as the hurricane that followed. We got here right when it opened and there were about 10 people waiting. We got right in. We made several attempts to try this restaurant over the last couple years ., and weren't able to get in until today . Wow!!! It was definetly worth the wait. We were at the door about 30 minutes before the 5:00 opening. First ones in the door. Greeted by friendly staff and quickly seated. Nice drink menu. Had a pineapple jalapeño margarita. I cannot comment on the food since I decided the staff was so rude I did not want to continue. They were very short and abrupt in their responses to any question. For example, when asked about making a reservation they said to call, but when told no one was answering the phone the waitress replied we are too busy to answer the phone all day. The waitress WAS busy running around back and forth because she kept forgetting to give patrons who had their dishes any silverware so ended up making multiple trips back and forth. I should have gotten a clue about their attitude from the sign out front of their outdoor dining stating we have limited seating EVEN though there are empty tables. We were on the coast to spend some get away time without our kiddos. We decided against some of the other "upscale" options that seemed to have been around for well..forever. We were greeted warmly but told that there would be a 30 minute wait (reservations while on vacay? Not for us!)..Hubby and I decided to take a stroll since it was a decent night for one. About 10 minutes into our walk we received a call that they had a table open up for us..cool! We walked back and were seated right away. We ordered some yummy drinks from the bar (I went "tropical" and darling Hubby went for "cool and refreshing" and both were excellent!). We ordered some kind of "balls" for an appetizer in the recommendation from our server and were pleasantly greeted with belly heaven. Our main courses were both excellent and from the looks around the room at the other diners, I would say that everything on the menu would be a good choice. There were a couple of families there, but my picky eaters would have gone hungry; besides, I'm not spending $35/pp on their dinners! If you have any respect for yourself or any other human being then don't set foot in that bar. The place was near empty but still refused to let me and my spouse have a seat in the bar. The owner and the staff said that every seat was reserved. I have never encountered this type of treatment. We left politaly and said to the owner who followed us outside that's okay although they came recommend there are plenty of bars in Cannon Beach with empty seats and welcoming staff. I thought to myself plenty of restaurants would love to have my hard working money, this place should be investigated for hatred and anything else you could think of. Thanks to Yelp we discovered this little gem of a restaurant and even got to meet the chef. The food was excellent. I had the Ahi tuna and coconut shrimp in a sauce with a heat rating of 4...It was delicious ,served over basmati rice and with a few sticks of young asparagus and pieces of yellow pepper in it, the sauce just added the right touch. My hubby had the Jambalaya and it also was a scrumptious dish. We ended the meal with the Chef's sweet treat of the night. It was a warm lava coconut brownie topped with homemade coconut ice cream..Oh my!! To top it off, the staff was terrific, the service fast, and I'd say, the best food on our week-long trip. Once again they have outdone themselves. Whether it's the wonderfully presented Seared Ahi plate, the majorly delicious chicken skewers, the mango flambe with toasted coconut sprinkled liberally over the top, or just a drink that isn't afraid to have alcohol in it, this place makes a great EVERYTHING. The chef is amazing. And funny. The servers remembered me after only one visit a week prior, and the ambience is welcoming and awesome. We love this place! We've been coming here for many years, way back when they were a tiny little place with a tiki bar around the corner! The first thing we do when we book a trip to the area (this time we were actually staying in Manzanita & drove up for a date night!) is to make a dinner reservation here! We are so thankful they now take reservations!! I love that the owners, the chef & the bartender, are so hands on! They personally meet with everyone to assure everything is to your satisfaction! Amazing cocktails, fabulously tasty food and top notch service! We just went with the specials this time...wow! The starter was divine! Fresh Dungeness crab on grilled crostini with herbed goat cheese & a Meyer Lemon sauce on a bed of Balsamic dressed arugula! Wow!! The Meyer lemon sauce just popped & the flavors all blended fabulously!! We could have just had a couple of those for dinner ! But everything is so wonderful here we went with another special as an entree : Alaska Weathervane Scallops, Jumbo Prawns & Dungeness Crab sautéed with onions, peppers, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, tri-colored cous cous and white wine saffron lemon stock sauce! We found a parking place and had a great meal. We have always liked this place. We need to come more often. Tonight super chef Josh came out of the kitchen to describe the menu and communicate with customers. It added to the dining experience. I got an excellent Manhattan to start and my wife had a special berry cooler which was "really good". Later I had an interesting red wine blend with food. We started with the reliable Tiki salad: always good. Wife had seafood linguini which had a great seafood selection. I had a pork special that was tasty and, unfortunately, a little rich for my older digestive system. We couldn't handle a dessert since we were full. Service was great: knowledgeable and helpful.
