I've walked past Catch 818 so many times while doing my evening steps along Ventura Boulevard. For the longest time, I actually thought it was a Thai restaurant because of the name. The space always looked roomy and relaxed, never overly packed, which made me curious. I finally told a friend we should try it, and that's when I found out it's actually a Mexican restaurant which is perfectly fine because I love Mexican food. We were seated quickly. There were about five couples in the restaurant including us, so it wasn't busy at all. The place itself is spacious with plenty of tables, which I appreciated. I ordered a chicken quesadilla but received a steak quesadilla instead. Honestly, I had been considering steak anyway, so I didn't make a big deal out of it. The portion was generous with a good amount of steak inside. Overall, I'd rate it about a 7 out of 10. It wasn't bad at all -- definitely more than average -- but it didn't quite stand out flavor-wise the way I expected from a sit-down restaurant. My friend ordered the fish tacos, and the fish portion was impressively large. Very meaty, very generous. Taste-wise, though, we found ourselves adding more avocado, tomatoes, onions, and sour cream to boost the flavor. It was good, but it needed those extras to really come alive. We also ordered horchata with lemonade and cucumber, which was refreshing and enjoyable. The server had a fantastic personality: warm, friendly, and welcoming. That said, I would have appreciated more check-ins. I tend to drink a lot of water, and we had to call her over for refills. At one point another customer was ringing the bell to pay, and she wasn't around for a few minutes. Not a major issue, just something that could elevate the experience with a bit more attentiveness. One thing that stood out was the timing of the food. Since it wasn't busy, I expected a quicker turnaround. It wasn't excessively long, but slightly slower than anticipated for a mostly empty dining room. Overall, I'd rate Catch 818 around 3.5 out of 5. The portions are generous, the space is comfortable, and the service is friendly. With a little improvement in flavor depth and attentiveness, it could easily move up a notch. It's a solid neighborhood spot with potential.

A false review against the waitress

I been coming over to this establishment for the past 2 months, and the service has been proper with professionalism. "Natasha G"made a poor review by falsifying information. I was a customer the evening she was there, the waitress was not clocked in and she wasn't taking nobody to the back.

My sister and I come often here because we absolutely love the food and the micheladas they're easily our favorites and very convenient because we live near by However, the service consistently is horrible every time we come we are rarely checked on for drink refills or to see how we're doing. During our visit today with a friend, the staff dropped off her menu and water but never returned to take her order. Instead, they focused on cleaning around us and didn't look in our direction so we can get their attention until the very end when the kitchen was closed. Mind you every time we come there's no more than two or three tables present.

Amazing! The food is so good, i was having a hard time finding a close marisco spot around north Hollywood but this is it. Super legit! Had the pescado zarandeado, fish chicharrones and shrimp cocktail. Very satisfying meal and my complainy ass husband had no complaints, they also got the beer buckets for happy hour at certain times, a plus!

Located on Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks. This is their 2nd location. Great service. Nice clean environment and a nice ambiance with music playing in the background . I came for a drink and oysters. I got the prepared oysters (shrimp and fish ceviche on top of raw oysters). It was delicious. The server suggested the regular oysters (will try next time). I didn't order any other entrees but I look forward to coming back and trying other menu options.

If you love Mariscos this place has quality food and very chill environment Ventura side

My very first time here, I was beyond impressed with the food . The inside of the restaurant is decorated very nice with art all over the walls and they have patio seating. The Horchata tasted very authentic and the alcoholic beverages were not tiny at all. The food was AMAZING! They also had delicious chips and salsa right when you sit down with a side of beans. Good spot for any occasion.

THERE'S ONLY ONE place you need to consider for your mariscos/fresh seafood cravings. The service is always great. The hostess and waitresses are attentive and super helpful. Great selection of food items for the pickiest of eaters. Awesome selection of beer and drinks. The setting is very chill. Open and airy right on Ventura blvd w/ a view of the street life. Indoor and outdoor seating options available.

Octopus Taco, avocado, sesame seeds, grilled onions, cilantro sauce , chipotle sauce, lime juice, served in a flour tortilla.

Yes, I'm well aware of location, ingredients, operating costs, etc...but damn. Getting 2 cocktails felt really indulgent. The interior/ambience is lovely - really appreciate what they did to the place. First had the guacamole maragrita - i love avocado and appreciate a less sweet spin on cocktails. It was really good, I like the play of pureed avocado and citrus notes. Next I had the creamsicle maragrita - I love the combination of orange and vanilla so it sounded intriguing. It was...a bit odd. There was.a smoky mezcal flavor that overwhelmed the drink making it hard to detect that orange/Vanilla flavor. And there was supposed to be mezcal in it. However, I did appreciate the server coming by to pour the Cocktail into a more chilled glass, mine got warmed up while drinking. Docking a star because the food seems like kind of an afterthought for the price. These days I usually need food with my cocktails. Wasn't very hungry so I went with one of the cheaper snackier options - chips and salsa. It was serviceable. My friend got the guacamole with tuna, and said the guacamole was too basic. Would come back for the drinks for sure. Wish they had a daytime happy hour with at least daytime happy hour food pricing.

My husband and I stopped in on a Sunday for a quick drink before a movie, and the "vibe" was non-existent. They have four TVs at the bar, but the setup was bizarre, two were completely off and another was just frozen on a directory logo. The biggest issue, however, is the cleanliness--or lack thereof. The place is incredibly dirty. It feels like it hasn't had a deep clean in weeks, maybe longer. The bar top was disgusting, the floors were grimy, and even the woodwork looked like it hadn't seen a rag since opening day. They are charging $17 for "signature cocktails," which is bold for a spot that feels like a neglected dive bar. If you're going to charge premium prices, you have to at least wipe down the countertops. Service-wise, the bartender was friendly enough but low energy and minimal level of service. To make matters worse, a shift change happened while we were there, and the departing bartender made us close out our check and start a brand-new one with the next person. Why should the staff's administrative hand-off be the customer's issue? It's just unprofessional. The Valley has so many actual dive bars with character and plenty of high-end spots for a great cocktail; I'm not sure where this place is trying to fit in. It feels like someone bought it and just stopped caring. We won't be back.

Sherman Oaks is gritty and the section of Ventura Boulevard that houses TLP is almost brutalist in its anti-establishment aesthetic. You would never know it was here if you didn't either live in the neighborhood or seek it out as I did. It is sandwiched between a completely non-descript place that I didn't even look at and a crystals shop with grafitti-etched windows (unfortunately!) but some really cool beads. Inside is the same -- no frills, a dress-down and survive-if-you-dare vibe. My pictures will illustrate what I mean. Nevertheless, the friendly service (shout out to our server, Patrick), the menu, and the quality of the food are well worth it. Again, see what we ordered in the photos attached. Everything was delicious. The floor, tables, and chairs were all clean. There is some kind of post-apocalypse rhumba going on with the ceiling treatment. It is almost reverse-logic art with all the shading (stains? velour movement?) and utilitarian installation it reveals. Love the walls though, and the worn distressed wood everywhere (see the pix, folks). A bonus was watching the Masters (Patrick let us linger) and sitting by a giant window that was open to the street. Parking is up a block or so on either side. We always find safe spots in Sherman Oaks. The music seemed to be one CD of an unknown (to me) vocal artist and was pleasant. The crowd was friendly and the whole atmosphere was like one big homey grunge party. You know those mornings you fall out of bed and almost don't want to change out of your pajamas or yoga threds? I go back inside to ask if we were going to be seated for our reservation and she asks under what name...mind you I was there before opening so she already had my name and time for reservation before no one else was there yet. We weren't checked on throughout the meal (again the restaurant was NOT crowded) and after completing our meal I realized the hostess deleted my reservation. For those who use OpenTable you know you get points for every completed reservation. I reached out privately to management first about my overall experience to hopefully rectify the issue. I wasn't looking for any incentives but that they at least train their wait staff better and resubmit my reservation in the system so I could both redeem my points and leave a review. It never happened. In an economy where everything is expensive just stepping outside I really value good service as well as good food. There's music that's lively without being overbearing, and the staff is uniformly friendly. But... You have to order at the bar and, though they have runners to bring your food, you do have to hunt them down for anything after the delivery (extra ketchup, etc). While this isn't my favorite system at my age, to be fair, whatever the owners are saving on staff is reflected in the prices, which are absolutely below most places in the area for food that is good-quality and drinks that are generously poured. So yes, my wife's Espresso Martini was served in a deep-bellied Belgium beer glass, and my whiskey neat was a hefty pour. Yay!! For food, I ordered the Smash Burger, which is served with melted American, grilled onions and the house version of Russian dressing (as well as pickles, which I deleted). The burgers had a nice, smashed crust while remaining juicy, the cheese was properly melted, and the grilled onions had a terrific caramelized sweetness, while the house sauce was very well-balanced: ketchupy and creamy without being too mayonnaise-heavy. A very good smasher. My wife ordered the Big Texan Burger because she wanted cheddar and frizzled onions and BBQ sauce, though she deleted the bacon and pork belly that are normally included. This, too, was a very good burger: cooked to a proper and pleasing medium-rare and well-seasoned, with a good, fresh flavor to the beef. The onion rings were less successful, which are of the beer batter type, but seemed to be a commercial, frozen product. The coating was browned but not crisp, and the flavor was relatively nondescript. We didn't really eat them, and wouldn't order them again. And so, to me, The Tipsy Cow is a bit of a mixed bag: reasonably priced decent food and reasonably priced, generously-poured drinks -- but in a mostly self-serve environment that incrementally loses its appeal in relation to your age and your dining circumstances. Certainly worth a try, but you've gotta be in the right mood.
