Still great as ever! Catfish Parlor South was a restaurant I loved and used to frequent years ago when I worked nearby. I ate lunch there recently and found the restaurant even better than I remembered but now it is comfort food for the 21st century. The staff treats you like family and the food makes you feel at home. I enjoyed some of my old favorites and found the fried catfish and fried shrimp are better than ever. The long hush puppies and vinegary cole slaw are also still great. New for me to try was the fried calamari which is addicting and a light and refreshing watermelon salad with walnuts. Yum. It was packed and ready for pick up before the restaurant was open. While sitting in my care waiting for my pick up time. The manager came out to the parking lot looking for me. Affordable but basically like Golden Corral for catfish. Fried catfish was fishy, hush puppies are strange, long thin flavorless fried things (see picture). (Not at all what i would expect when ordering hushpuppies.) Staff was nice although a bit slow. Tarter sauce is good, green beans had good flavor but too wet, okra was okay, Mac n cheese was okay. Stopped in for lunch today. Service was a bit slow initially but eventually we had everything. My party had everything from grilled catfish, fried catfish, and chicken fried steak. Mine was good and everyone else seemed happy too. Portions were excellent and you get 3 sides with your dinner, honestly it was enough you could easily split an entree. Lots of old time signs and ads on the walls and make sure you peek into the side room if you're into aviation, there are many plane photos in there. The main room was very dark, no natural light in here at all. It wasn't very noisy. We finally made it to one of Austin's iconic restaurants that survived the pandemic. There is a great reason they survived since 1974. They serve it all with a southern seafood cajun flair. Its just that good! Catfish, huge shrimp, tilapia, oysters, etouffe, gumbo. The blackened fish has proper seasoning, not just color. Need I say more? Its not a fancy place. Was "told" I ordered chicken fried chicken instead of what I ordered, like I didn't know what I ordered, without of any attempt being made to fix the order. Hands down the best catfish I've had in Austin (though not the best catfish I've had in Texas). The catfish was well fried and very fresh. Tartar and cocktail sauce were yummy and tasted homemade. Mac and cheese, beans, and green beans were all stellar (especially the pinto beans). The gumbo was good, but okra heavy for me. The hush puppies are fun--very savory (msg maybe?). Upon arrival, you're hit with a reminder of down south bayous given the building looks like an old house. Came on a Sunday after early morning church about 30 minutes after they opened; there were 3 other families present. I was greeted by Suzanne who turned about to be my waitress as well. She was training a new waitress (Mariah) as well so I received 5 star treatment! I was presented with hush puppies (sticks), which were a little different than what we have back home in Houston, and two styles of tartar sauce. I ordered the spicy Fish and Cracker Jack Shrimp combo with my THREE sides (Mac and cheese, broccoli, and green beans), and a sweet tea. The portion size was cool! I took more than half of it home....portion control, ladies! Overall the flavor was good...spicy here just means seasoned. I would have hated to have ordered the regular and had bland tasting fish...like why would you do that!? Lol. The green beans were seasoned perfectly and cooked with onions...the same way I prepare them in my home! This place was awesome! We tried the "catch your dinner" special but didn't have any luck catching "Catfish Charlie" He was hooked by another group but they didn't play him right and broke the line. Had the jumbo shrimp and catfish combo with all the sides Really good, cooked fresh to order not setting around under a heat lamp like other places. Catfish Parlour - wow what a surprise! Honestly I am not sure what I was expecting. I will admit I usually only eat fried fish when I am in southeast Texas and don't usually pursue it in Austin. The group I am in at work was volunteering at the foodbank down the road and we were looking for a place to have lunch and meeting close by. There really aren't a lot of options for this in the area, so Catfish Parlour it was! We had a reservation ahead of time and they actually let us use their private room which was perfect so we could have a meeting and chat over lunch. Catfish Parlour is set up so that you walk up and order your main fish/seafood and then there is a buffet of all the different sides. I decided to do the fried oysters and fries. It takes a minute for the oysters to come out so they were delivered to my table. I loved how that they were crispy and flavorful. They were delicious. The fries were great as well. I didn't try the catfish. I heard the mac n cheese was good too! We got dessert and I had the blackerry cobbler ... I love love blackberries! It was hot and served a'la mode - yum! The manager/owner was there and personally came and talked to us. He thank us for coming and invited us to come back anytime. I thought that was a very nice gesture. Came as a spur of the moment thing. Was unexpectedly invited by a friend and as a good wholesome southern girl, how could I pass up catfish on a Friday?! There were more people during this dinner hour than there's been in a while. I'm assuming because everyone is getting more comfortable as COVID restrictions become more and more relaxed. But we were seated immediately, then not long after, we were approached by our waitress who got our food and drink orders. My friend is a regular so she knew what she wanted without looking at the menu. I just followed suit. We each got a medium catfish plate with the shrimp added. For sides, she got beans, broccoli and fries. I got cole slaw, fries and broccoli. I usually don't get the broccoli but felt the pressure to look semi healthy since she got it. Sigh...still thinking about the mac and cheese that got away. Anyway, our food came quickly. It was fresh and hot. Can't complain. I got my plate spicy but really there's no noticeable spice in my opinion. It just looks darker than the the regular plate. It's the same between the regular tartar sauce and the spicy one. The spicy one is just green. Assuming it's that way to make it as palatable as possible to the most people. The sweet tea here isn't overly sweet. If you think you're going to be getting McDonald's level sweet tea think again. It's just enough where you probably only need to added sugar if you're the most die hard sweetest of the sweet tea kind of person. Not too bad. It's all still very delicious though. The fish was hot and in no way over or under done. Hit the mark just right. And surprisingly, the broccoli was great! It looked steamed and plain but when I ate it, it was kind of buttery. Not overwhelmingly but just right where it didn't need anything else. I didn't even add any salt. Just as is was perfect. OH, and the hush puppies at the beginning of the meal! That was probably my favorite part of the meal. They came out so fresh and hot. Crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. Paired perfectly with the tartar sauce and sweet tea before the meals arrived. And the best part is that the medium plates are big enough where you'll still have leftovers to take home. I took home a lot of my food. It cost us about $40 for the two of us. Not too bad I'd say. This is another go to spot for sure. read more

Service - it is always down to earth and makes you feel like a back in the country establishment. Everyone is kind and polite and you will probably meet the manager and owners. Though it seems catfish is a big thing in these parts, this takes me back to my childhood, when I lived in North Carolina for a short time, after leaving Austin. Had a lot of catfish there. But not only that, just a lot of southern cooking in general. It was a cute touch that the waitress brought hush puppies with tartar sauce (like getting chips and salsa). And they were pretty good. I got the little catfish plate, the spicy variant. You get 3 sides with any dinner plates so I got the creamy coleslaw, fried okra and green beans. Catfish is nice and juicy. The breading is good but not spicy. I would have it again but will likely try the regular for comparison. Put lemon, salt and the malt vinegar and it's pretty darn good catfish. The coleslaw is good. Everyone has their preferences in this arena but I like the creamy in this place over the vinegar based one. The okra is as expected. The green beans are great! Love them. Had a long day and came here on a Saturday night since I was in the area. There were some people there and the parking lot was not full. After about 30 seconds a server came up and I was seated. I ended up getting a side salad and the Large combo. It came with fried catfish and fried large shrimp along with French fries, beans, and coleslaw. The food arrived very quickly in about 5 minutes. There isn't much taste so you will have to use the malt vinegar, ketchup, and hot sauce on the side. The fried food had a nice texture to it and was soft to eat. The blackberry cobbler with ice cream was good, but sweet. It wasn't amazing, but the food was very good. I may try some oysters next time. read more
