I'm astounded that this place has as high a rating as it does. I've been there for lunch twice in the last couple of months with friends from work. To me it's pretty hard to mess up fried catfish, but that's what they did, both times. The first trip I had the popcorn shrimp and catfish. Second time just the catfish. The only thing you really need to do with fried food (besides making sure the oil is hot enough) is serve fresh and hot. This place gave me lukewarm, mushy fried foods both times. And it wasn't even close to fresh and hot. Both times I was there it was during a very busy weekday lunch hour, so there's really no excuse except that maybe they're frying too large a portion at once. I'd give it no stars if I could. Just wanted to get that out of the way. The catfish here is disgusting. The batter is dense the fish ends up tasting fishy and the batter is so bad.. which the batter might be better but they often burn it. It is sorta cheap, depending on your definition of cheap. The hush puppies are the only thing worth eating and I've never had hush puppies that look like this anywhere else. They are long and thin.. despite being the best thing on the menu I found them every bland. The first time I went the cole slaw was horrible. Tasted like someone dumped a bucket of corn syrup in some mayo and threw in some very well chopped cabbage. I went back a second time because some co-workers wanted to go and got a completely different type of slaw. This one was just shredded cabbage covered in vinegar .. not much better than the sugar and mayo. I have no clue why they have different cole slaw at different times. I'm not entirely sure whats up with the fish.. You would think with all the frying they clearly do inside the place it would be fresh but some pieces of fish were a different temperature than others and the breading was way more soggy, almost like they fried it the day before and tried to reheat it, then tried to mix the old fish with the new fish in the hope that no one would notice. The smell inside here is basically that of burning grease. It burns your eyes its disgusting. I'm also pretty sure there is a quarter inch think layer of grease on everything inside the building. I am staying in a hotel nearby while visiting from Houston. I arrived at the Ben White location about 6:15 PM on Friday, 2/1/19. I was immediately seated. Just as immediate was the arrival of those wonderful hush puppies with the two dipping sauces. The green jalapeno dipping sauce is my favorite. The place was packed with families. I began with a half order of onion rings. They were made to order and arrived at my table, hot, right out of the fryer. Delicious. I usually eat them with ketchup but this time I used the green jalapeno sauce. Amazing. The half order of rings was plenty for two people. I brought more than half of them back to the hotel with me. Because of the appetizer, I went with the lighter portion of the catfish dinner. Three pieces of fish, and my sides were regular coleslaw, mac and cheese and green beans. The waitress asked me if I wanted regular or creamy coleslaw. I messed up and told her regular. Not my thing. Regular slaw is pretty much a bunch of slivered cabbage with a shiny coating. Eating raw cabbage like that is not my thing. But that was my fault for ordering it. Next time I know to get the creamy. I also made a mistake with the fish. When they ask you if you want regular or spicy fish, order the spicy. I feared the spicy may be too much for my tender stomach, so I ordered the regular. Regular is pretty much fish coated in corn meal and fried. Very little seasonings. Not even salt. Next time I will get the spicy fish as it will have more seasonings for flavor. The mac and cheese was creamy, gooey goodness. OMG. So good. The best part of the meal however was the green beans. Perfectly seasoned with tiny pieces of bacon. Not too much salt but you could tell they were properly seasoned. I could eat a large bowl of those things as an entire meal. So good. I've learned from my ordering mistakes and next time the meal will be even better. My waitress was fantastic. Friendly, efficient and checked on me just enough throughout the meal. Yummie food, large portions, and a decent price. I've come here for lunch and dinner, dine in and take out several times and I'm always pleased. They've got good comfort food, if you dine in sides are unlimited. The sides differ from night to night with cabbage, corn nuggets, okra, broccoli and such. Corn nuggets and okra are my personal fav. Here's where I went wrong...I thought I was getting a steal with ordering the bottomless fried shrimp for $13.00; didn't know I'd be gagging trying to eat it. The first plate they brought out was undercooked, soggy and EXTREMELY fishy, so much so that I had to ask they take it back and cook it longer. The second plate was just as fishy and a little crunchier, but I decided to grab a to-go box and quit trying to eat it. I'm driven by the Catfish Parlour dozens (hundreds) of times in the past few years. I'm not a big catfish lover so I guess I never gave the restaurant a thought. Then one cold December day, I saw the sign in front: "Happy Hour." The siren call of a margarita after a tortuous visit to the post office nearby was overwhelming. The exterior of CP is pretty 'down-home' - essentially a wood covered metallic building with no windows to speak of. However, once you get inside the place it is pretty nice. I was taken to a booth and ordered a frozen margarita and some Cajun boiled shrimp for happy hour. The waitress brought me a bowl of hush puppies with regular tartar and greenish 'jalapeno' tartar sauce. The margarita was good - neither too sweet or tart - and with a good amount of tequila (a plus). The hush puppies were delish and the shrimp were fresh and pretty sizable. I also ordered a cup of crawfish etouffee which rawked - *lots* of crawfish tails in a creamy almost sweet sauce. Although it was just a happy hour visit, I didn't need dinner later that evening. I had enough food at the Catfish Parlour to tide me over until the next morning. A good place with no pretension. read more

I to was not sure what I had expected but Catfish Parlour was a really nice surprise. I am not a catfish eater but the menu has so many other options including oysters, shrimp, and other types of fish. The oysters looked so yummy but I had to try the shrimp because my husband is not a fan of eating oysters or even seeing them on the table so I do what I can to make him feel good while eating. The shrimp order was huge and much like Jason C. I ate so much of the hush puppies that when the food arrived I was half full. The margarita's were amazing, the beer was cold, and I like getting the beans and coleslaw with extra jalapenos. The fried shrimp had the perfect amount of breading and didn't taste over cooked. We are building a new house less than two miles away and have a feeling this might be one of those places we can visit and order take-out often. That could be a con but it's feeling like a pro. This time I went for the healthy option and got the grilled catfish with veggies. Really good y'all! It was lightly seasoned and grilled perfectly. The rice was really good too. Veggies I got were carrots and black eyed peas. Both very tasty! I bet the grilled salmon is also really good so I'll be trying that next time. This used to be my favorite place to eat when I lived in Austin and I am not a big seafood fan. I hadn't been there in about 8 years until last night. Sadly it will be my last visit. The service was absolutely HORRIBLE! There were only 2 tables including ours which was a party of 7. 4 adults and 3 children. and then a party of 3, who had already eaten when we had arrived and was leaving. We had to ask numerous times for things, such as condiments and drink refills when you could clearly see the glasses were empty. In my opinion for the amount of wait staff that I saw standing around and only one 7 of us there it would seem that they could at least make sure we had drinks. After a very lengthy wait, our food arrived and it was not all correct, and no sense of urgency to correct it. My bill was about $115 not including the tip that I was very hesitant about leaving because the service was just horrible! My husband who is from Washington state thought we were all a bit crazy because we raved about this place before we got there. read more
