I'm one of those people who always thinks about leaving reviews for a business but it just never happens. That streak has been broken after my visit to Cathedral Automotive. These guys were so professional, honest, accommodating and hard working that I had to make sure everyone knows just how great they really are. I took my 2005 WRX to the guys at Cathedral because I had been hearing a knocking noise from the right front that was causing some concern. I had a couple friends look at it with me but we couldn't figure out what it was to save our lives. One of my friends recommended Cathedral because he had taken his car there a couple times and had always been treated right. I called them up at about 1pm and Shane told me to go ahead and bring it down and that they would take a look at it ASAP. I got there about 30 minutes later and was greeted by Shane with a smile and a welcome, which as some people know can be kinda rare at some shops. Shane listened to what was going on and advised that he'd like to go on a test drive with me to hear it for himself so he could make sure we were addressing the right issue. Sometimes it's hard to explain a noise so it was nice to have him go with me to verify that they would be addressing the concern that I came in about. We went back to the shop and he asked me to wait in the front office while he got it up in the air and took a look at it. It must have been 10 minutes later when John, the owner, came up to the front office and asked me to come have a look at what was going on. I went out to the shop, which I have to say was exceptionally clean and well organized, and went with John to look at my car up in the air. John walked me all around the area of concern showing me piece by piece that all of the suspension and brake parts in the area of the noise were solid and of no concern at all. He then pointed out the actual problem...the shop who i had let do the previous oil change had left two of the plastic push pins out of the protective cover for under the engine and that when air was blowing under it that it was flapping and hitting the underside of the car. John asked to be excused for a moment and came back with a couple replacement pins, popped them in and ot was good as new. I was shocked! Now don't get me wrong, I love my cars and know a lot about them but I will be the first to admit that I'm not a professional and don't know everything. The fact that my friends and i didn't catch that hurts my man pride a bit but I will get over it. I rely on my car to get to work every day and based off what my friend told me would have just trusted them no matter what they said and had them repair it. The simple fact that they took the time to go on the drive with me to verify what was wrong, only had me wait 10 minutes and then actually showed me what the problem was is a testament to these guys professionalism and honesty. After replacing the pins, John lowered it down off the lift and asked me to go for a ride with him to make sure we solved the problem. And you know what? It did! I thought I was going to be looking at hundreds of dollars in repairs and it was simply two little pieces of plastic that someone else had not put back in place. When we got back to the shop John handed me my keys, shook my hand and said "have a good day and come see us again." I stood there with a look of confusion that he must have picked up on and we both started laughing. I said "I have to pay you something for your time and effort and for being so honest." John said to me "listen, this stuff happens and I'm just glad you brought it here to have us look at it. There's no charge for this and if you have any other problems in the future, please come back and see us again." Shocked. Absolutely shocked. Not only did they not try to rip me off like some shops will do, they didn't charge me at all!! I couldn't believe it. I thanked him like crazy and was on my way with a car that didn't make any more noises! This is exactly what every shop should strive to be like. Most people have no clue what they are talking about with their cars and have to go on trust that what the mechanic is telling them is accurate and honest. I can tell you right now, these guys are accurate, honest and a whole bunch of other positive synonymd that would take a long time to type out. Based on my amazing experience along with my friends who have had nothing but great work done on their cars by these guys, I find the negative reviews posted here insanely hard to believe. As long as I live in AZ I will be taking my car to these guys and no one else. I will be recommending to all my family and friends and anyone else I can tell about them. Hi All ... Cathedral here! Yelp will remove this post the second they see it, but since we can't get them to remove the PHONY one-star review by "K.P." you'll see on here in a glorious close-to-the-top position, we figured we'd get this out there for as long as we can. So here's how we know this is a phony "review": 1) We would NEVER make a repair without getting full authorization from the customer. E-V-E-R. Our loyal customers that have come to us for 17+ years know better. That's why we have loyal customers. And why we've been in business for 17+ years. 2) We would NEVER "call a day later." E-V-E-R. Why would we? You need your car, and we need your payment, so that's just silliness. 3) When a business owner logs into their Yelp Business page, they can view their Yelp "activity." This particular "activity" from "K.P." said: "A man in his 40s from Phoenix, AZ wrote a 1 star review of your business." In his 40s!! Now if you're 25 and reading this, you may think 40s is old. Otherwise, not so old. Notice the phony reviewer says, "I am an OLD GENTLEMAN..." As if anyone would say that to begin with, but that's beside the point. Oh and BTW ... we have a screenshot of that activity and will be happy to show it to anyone who requests it. 4) Another tip off for us was that this person first posted the phony review under the phony name of "James L." and then immediately changed it to the even more phony "K.P." Not sure why that would be, but it's just another sketchy detail we noticed. That's in addition to all of the other ridiculous, poorly put-together nonsense he or she strung together. We have screenshots of these also. 5. The average price for a condenser for an older car hovers around $400 - really depends on the car. "Old gentleman" K.P. has an "old car," so there's no way Old K.P. would have ever been quoted $800 for a condenser. Not at OUR shop anyway. 6. Not only have we not had a "James L" or a "K.P." in the shop recently ... we haven't had a repair order for an $800 condenser. So ... just a few reasons we know this is a bogus "review." Business owners have almost zero recourse with Yelp. There are people out there who are paid to write phony reviews, good and bad. Yelp knows it, but it's almost impossible for a business owner to have anything removed once it's posted. You know what else Yelp does? They quite often stick LEGITIMATE 5-star reviews on the "not recommended page," which most people don't even know about. Why is that, you ask? NO CLUE, we would answer. Even Yelp can't tell you why. And if you ask them to put them back on the front page? HA! Good luck with that! There are competitors who will write bad reviews just to try to hurt a fellow business owner, maybe thinking it will boost their own business (karma doesn't work that way though). And then there are just all-around mean people who for whatever reason enjoy lying and trying to cause other people grief just for kicks. Who knows what "K.P./James L.'s" deal is, but since Yelp won't fix it, we'll make sure we get the word out. It stinks when you're a reputable business who has worked long and hard to earn that reputation, and something like this happens. And when Yelp won't do anything to help you make it right. What really sets them apart is their patience and transparency. They take the time to answer questions, check in throughout the process, and explain things clearly without making you feel rushed or talked down to. My husband and I have been taking our cars to Cathedral for about 15 years because we have found them to be honest and dependable. We do not say that easily about anyone in the auto repair business. We ask lots of questions to make sure we understand WHAT they suggest we need and WHY. John and Shane have been top-notch in their explanations and they never do any work until my husband or I approve it. They have helped us with everything from regular maintenance to finding a used power seat replacement (because a brand new one was going to be triple the amount) to inspecting a used car we were considering buying (they did that for free) and more. There is no one else we would trust with our cars, which range from 13 years old to 4 years old. We highly recommend them. read more

This review is long overdue! Cathedral Automotive gets big time "gold stars", from me! I have been their customer since 2000. John and Shane have worked on both cars (Corolla, now an Accord). I even lived for a time in Scottsdale and Cathedral was not 'convenient' but I made time to go there ANYWAY. I trust them completely, to do the work I need, in an excellent manner. No worries - ever. John and Shane are my go-to guys for anything automotive, no question. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Just moved to Phx from L.A. recently and had no idea where to take my '05 Mercedes. These guys came highly recommended by a guy in my office who won't take his cars anywhere else for the last decade or so. I'll never go anywhere else after the stellar service these guys provided. Unlike the dealers they didn't try pushing anything I didn't need. They used quality dealer parts and made sure to show me the old ones so I could understand why they needed replaced. These guys are great! Honest, fair prices and straight forward. I was referred to them by one of their long time customers. I had bought a suburban that was throwing several codes and couldn't be registered. I took it to Firestone on Cave Creek and was quoted $2,400 to have the work done. I took it to Shane for an inspection/quote and for almost HALF the PRICE that firestone quoted, he did the work and it passed emissions! I will be a customer for life now. The Team at Cathedral is the BEST! It is really great to know I'm dealing with people who care about you and your vehicle. They are so good at what they do, they make it seem like magic!! I have a 2007 Honda Fit with over 274,000 miles on it. Cathedral has repaired and maintained it since it was new. In fact, they service and repair cars for everybody in my family. They deserve 10 stars for honesty and another 10 for knowing their stuff. I have saved thousands of dollars in new car payments by knowing my old car is still dependable and roadworthy. When it's finally time for a new one, Shane and John will be taking care of it as well. I wouldn't even think of finding another shop. read more

Over 15 years ago, someone recommended Cathedral Motors to me and immediately I saw the difference in how this business worked. They were upfront with what was wrong, with an explanation that a layman could understand. They make every effort to have your vehicle ready when they said it would be.
