I've been purchasing my family's cakes from this place for a while now. Since I'm a procrastinator (even on my own birthdays, & yes I buy my own birthday cakes), I never place in orders in advance; I come the day of. They always have a decent assortments to choose from. I would never order something out of the ordinary like taro cake, but I've strayed from the typical strawberry favorite though they do have both if memory serves right. Every single time, the cake has been delicious! I usually buy the ones that are $20, but by the end of the night, only half of the cake is gone for 5 people. The cake itself is very moist and fluffy. The inside generally is full of fresh fruits. It also doesn't hurt that some of them are gorgeous, despite being a typical Asian bakery! However, they're quick to write on "Happy Birthday!" without really asking for preferences which then ends up looking shabby/shakey, or they'll sometimes just stick a little decoration off the side that will make the cake look cheap. Throw in "meh" customer service and limited English, I'm taking off a star. Plenty of parking in an empty lot. It's very easy to miss this place, so keep an eye out if you're using a GPS. read more

I don't like Las Tunas because it was a bit unclear so it did take us a little bit to find this place. Luckily I speak Mandarin fluently so calling them and asking for better directions or clarifications worked. Even though they speak Mandarin, some of the people who work there still don't get what I am saying. Maybe they are Cantonese? Speaking either Mandarin or Cantonese might be a necessity if you want to ask for anything specific. I don't think I will go there again. I purchased a cake and spelled out the name. On a piece of paper. Twice. But the lady behind the counter spelled it wrong. I spelled it out again. She then took the cake into the kitchen to "correct" it and came back with the red gel icing smeared on the white frosting, but this time, with the correct spelling of the name. I had to say something.... and it was hard to do this, but after all, it was for the bday girl. So I did. I didn't exactly let her have it, whatever that means, but told her I didn't feel right giving this to the bday girl. We just stood there for a while. We have been coming to this bakery for over 25 years. However, we began to notice the slipping of their quality. It started with our order of a large cake for my daughter's college graduation party. The cake was so poorly decorated it was embarrassing to present it...the writing was so bad it could have been done by a 1st grader. We ordered a birthday cake a while later and the same thing happened again...we ended up buying another one from a different bakery. The breads and other desserts that we purchased were also substandard and not of the same quality as before. I am a fan of Chinese bakery once in a while. My dear sister on the other hand is a dead slave to carb. She just loves Asian bread and their pastries. I've heard of this place before from friends recommending their fine and delicious treats but have no idea it was so close by. Until my sister told me about it while we were in the neighborhood and she pointed out the location to me. OH~! No wonder I didn't know where it was, it was secretively hidden among at the corner where if you drive by, I guarantee you will 95% chance miss it. Anyway, the service was kinda bad and when we came in the lady at the place was what seems like rushing a cake to another woman for delivery. They were speaking in loud Mandarin and would careless of us two customers. We went in late in the afternoon, according to my sis. again (since she was such a fan and expert) most of the good stuff are gone but we did manage to get the last piece of the egg salad sandwich and among other goodies. Again, service is bad here and they just make it seems like they really don't care for your business. The attitude of buy it or leave. They were pretty friendly and chatting up nicely (in Mandarin, of course) with the Asian chatty old ladies which probably their loyal returning customers. (You know the drill) According to the other reviews here, I guess you have to speak Chinese otherwise, there might be communication problem. For me personally, we just look, pick, and grab - nothing tough about it. The quality of the pastries here are not bad though and I am definitely a fan. Would I care to go out of my way for them? We ordered a 1/4 sheet strawberry cake for my grandma's birthday. Their cakes are spongy and moist and FRESH. I love how they layer their strawberries. Each of them are thinly sliced, ripe, and sweet. Their whipped cream is pretty good too. For the taste, it's well worth the price. $25 for a 1/4 sheet. My only thing is their English writing. I think it doesn't look nice. They are also known for their crispy cake. It's pretty good, but too plain for my taste. One last thing, some of their cake designs are so cute. We have had the teapot cake and the "long life bun" shaped cake and they turned out great. Don't know the price ranges for those, but the taste and design should be worth it. read more

Besides being well-made and pretty, the goodies here are less sugary than your run-of-the-mill cakes. The last one I got was a tiramisu mousse for my dad's birthday and it was oh-so-heavenly. It doesn't taste quite like a traditional tiramisu. It's less sweet and the texture is not as creamy, but it has that "Asian-nesque" quality that gives an Italian-originated dessert creation its own spin. The fruit-flavored cakes here are also good, from the strawberry (multiple fruit layers between fluffy cake) to the mango one I bought that one time I forgot my friend was allergic to mango =____= The only negative point about this place is that it's cash only, and their cake prices range from upper to high 20s, so as a person who usually doesn't carry cash I find myself visiting the ATM almost every single time before coming here. read more

The bakery may not look like much. But the service is great and the sponge cake is delicious! I went with my friends one day to look for their wedding cake. So this review is only limited to the ordering of a wedding cake. This was our first time at the bakery and took some searching. When we arrived at Cathy's Bakery, it was very busy. It seems that everyone loves their pastries and bread. There was a lot of varieties to choose from. From appearance, the bakery didn't look like they would have wedding cakes except for the giant wedding cake picture on the outside window. So when we asked, to our surprise they had shown as a whole folder of wedding cake samples pictures and pricing details. We ended up ordering a two layer wedding cake for a 50 people portion. The top layer with mango and the bottom layer with strawberries, for a reasonable price! Best of all, they will deliver for free in the local area. Last thing to keep in mind though, it is cash only. I called in to change the pickup time for the order that I placed a few days ago. I spent almost 20 minutes trying to explain to them that if I could pick up 2 hours late, the lady didn't understand me and she gave the phone to another lady and she didn't understand as well, I had to use Google translate afterwards. I had the opportunity to try one of Cathy's Bakery cakes at a going away dinner for Daniel L with 30-some-odd other Yelpers. Fia R and Daniel L were super cool to bring us something sweet to end our meal! The cake was spectacular looking! Being the center of attenion, the cake had to deal with the Yelp paparazzi - everyone descended upon its gorgeous self with iPhones and cameras flashing. The cake itself was a bouncy sponge cake, with whipped frosting and huge chunks of fresh fruit on top. Half was strawberry filling, and half was taro. The strawberry side was definitely the better side - fresh fruit with whipped icing and a light and spongey cake.....yum!! Not too sweet at all, and so light that I could have eaten a HUGE piece and not felt it in my tummy. Dangerous!! The taro side looked interesting, but the pretty pale purple filling had the consistency of stiff mashed potatoes - and it wasn't sweet at all. I'd definitely dive in to another one of Cathy's cakes! This cake is made of 2 giant slices of sponge bread with crispy napoleon like crisps in the middle... soft first bite until you reach the slightly crunch middle! As for their bread.. tried a few but wasn't overly impressed... as for service, let's just say that this is a traditional Asian owned joint... want service, go somewhere else.... I am really disappointed with Cathy's Bakery. They were always my favorite bakery and I would have recommended them to anyone, but things have really changed. Our family got a cake from them for every birthday for every person for as long as I could remember, but this will definitely not happen anymore. I would give them 0/5 stars if possible. I ordered my wedding cake about 2 months in advance. From the start, I should not have ordered the cake with them. They were extremely rude. They had a folder of sample cakes, but were unable to make the first 10 cakes we chose! They should not let you see pictures of what they can't make! They kept shoving us around and pressured us to chose faster, even though all the cakes we chose from THEIR book could not be made for countless reasons--it's too slanted, we don't have red, this design is too complicated, this will make the cake weak--and we didn't even ask for any changes from the pictures they showed us! I should have left at that point, but we stayed until we found a cake they could make. Joyce took my order and she was very abrupt and demanding. We listened to her anyway and gave her the deposit. 3 days before my wedding she called and said they lost the picture of the cake. There was no apology or anything. She simply stated that I had to go back to the bakery asap, while she was working, 2pm to 8pm that same day or the next day at the latest! I went to the bakery the next day, even though I was extremely busy with all the last minute errands, and still no apology. She simply stated in Chinese that "shit happens and tough luck." When I finally got the courage to tell her that she was and has been extremely rude and did not even apologize for her mistake, she gave me a forced apology. This is a Chinese bakery, and you can get all the standard pastries here (recommendations include the pineapple bun - which you can tell by the criss-cross marks on top and the sweet buns filled with red bean paste or taro paste). If you've never tasted baked goods from a Chinese bakery - be forewarned that the goods aren't as sweet (and definitely do not use the same amount of frosting) as American baked goods. In fact, one of the biggest compliments that one can give a Chinese desssert is that it's "not too sweet" (usually repeated twice) (I once attended a children's birthday party where the parents bought a Chinese cake and the caucasion kids just didn't touch it because it wasn't sweet enough - and you wonder about the Type II diabetes epidemic?) Anyway, one cake the Cathy's does quite well is a "Taro Cake with Crispy Pastry" Imagine a light cake with a taro-custard filling and covered with layers of ephemeral, golden brown crispy pastry. They do this quite well and many people order it. They also have a pretty good mango cake that includes chunks of mango in the filling and very artfully arranged fruit on top, but I think Diamond Bakery does this particular cake better (and Kee Wah Bakery also has an excellent mango cake that is entirely covered in thin mango slices) Call in advance to order your cake for birthdays. Cathy's has some of the most moist and spongy cakes I've ever eaten. Of all their cakes, I've had taro, strawberry, mango, and the crispy Asian phyllo dough layered cake [su pi dan gao]. The head honchess that runs the shop, Mary, is always full of spunk and charm. She's high energy and sure knows how to spoil her regulars. My family does business regularly with Cathy's Bakery and therefore we get little perks here and there. [Always a plus] They have a decent selection of 'Asian breads'. Of course, they can't compare with the likes of 85C when it comes to specialty Asian breads, but if you want a simple green onion bread, a pork sung bread, something with hot dog in it, Cathy's meets that simple need. They also have mochi cakes, fancy looking cheesecakes, pastries, and curry buns! Located on the southwest corner of San Gabriel Blvd and Las Tunas Dr, Cathy's Bakery shares a lot with a handful of other businesses, so parking can become tight. If anything, park in the Hong Kong Supermarket parking lot, then walk over. Tip: Always ask for Mary. I didn't know it was called a "Salad Sandwich" but its pretty much a Ham & Cheese sandwich but def not your typical ham & cheese. It was perfect for me because I was in the mood for something small and light. The bread was crust-less(brownie points for cutting off the crust for me hehe) and it was almost cake-like in texture; very similar to their sponge cakes, soft, fluffy and melts in your mouth..yum. There is one thin layer of ham, a thin layer of cheese and another thin layer of some egg mixture. Try their Crispy Cake! (in crappy ping ying its called su pi dan gao) I forgot how good these cakes were until my boss brought them to work twice. They go by sheet sizes..although I don't know the exact dimensions of their sheet sizes, I believe their smallest sheet size could feed about 15-20 people and their largest sheet could feed about 30-35 people. Honestly, these cakes are so good I could probably finish their smallest sheet of cake by myself in one day, no joke. The cake is SO simple yet SO delicious. Whoever came up with this cake idea is a genius. It's basically 2 layers of the softest sponge cake that literally melts in your mouth, while the center is slathered with an extremely thin layer of cream that holds together lots of thin crispy layers of heaven! One thing i love about this cake is that it's not very sweet at all. I just love the combination of soft sponge cake and then you get that nice crispy crunch in the middle -- ugh, its so good just talking about it makes me want to drive out and buy a sheet. Despite how much I love this cake, the bad thing about it is that you have to consume it within a day because the crispy layers in the middle of the cake will lose its crunch. OK, so I'm Chinese too, BUT apparently, I wasn't one of the kids who was sat down as a kids and told, hey you have to avoid eye contact, be rude, and not say thank you. Cathy's isn't THAT bad, but I'm just saying that people come here for the goods, not the service. My family has been coming here since it's opened. We get cakes from them for every birthday. I love how silky and moist the cakes are. They're never too sweet and dense like the ones you get at Ralphs. However, my boyfriend's family who are Filipino thought that the cake was too spongey. If you want something in between the Ralphs' cakes and the Chinese cakes, maybe go to Ruby's in Eagle Rock or Red Ribbon or Goldilocks. All other pastries and bread here are just as delicious. I have had a lot of childhood memories associated with Cathy's Bakery...birthday cakes were either from here or Diamond Bakery in Monterey Park... Saturday mornings were filled with Su Pi Dan Gao. Cathy's never disappoints, it's that oh-so-good! Su Pi Dan Gao is like what others have described it to be...crispy Asian phyllo dough layered cake. The cake in between the crispy phyllo is like this airy goodness... not too sweet and not too dense. It's like the good in-between, fluffy and that tad kind of sweet that makes you want to eat more...lots more! For big events, we love to bring a sheet of Su Pi Dan Gao. At about $15 a pop, it's a great deal and everyone loves it! Young and old love their Su Pi Dan Gao that they go for seconds...even thirds! It's such a hit that we love to buy some extra to fulfill our own tummys! Cathy's also has a big selection of different Asian breads. We've tried their pineapple breads, pork sung bread and red bean bread but it's not as out of the ballpark like other bakeries like JJ Bakery. But it does fulfill your needs if you just want some Asian bread without driving all the way to Arcadia, etc. Overall, their specialty is their Su Pi Dan Gao and their cakes, Cathy's Bakery will always have a special place in my heart....and in my tummy. read more

I had ordered their special strawberry cake with flaky crust for my engagement party 2 weeks in advance. When he went to go pick it up the lady behind the counter said it wasn't ordered and that they would make it right away. After waiting 45 minutes for them to bake the cake and decorate it the lady had asked what he would want to write on the cake. He told her 3 times to write our names but she didn't seem to understand and had started to write "Happy Birthday." He quickly told her to stop and just write "Happy Engagement" but she didn't seem to understand and instead wrote "Happy Anniversary." She had already started to write "birthday," and just covered it up with an ugly flower. She did not apologized once for forgetting our order and messing up the message.
