Bought a strawberry cake for my nephews 2nd birthday that was enough for 20 people. Really good portion sizes because I'm pretty sure it could feed 30 people. My family and I were very loyal to Cathy's bakery growing up and would go often to get our birthday cakes there. I'm not sure if my taste has changed but the cake seemed a bit more dry than I remember? It needed a bit more cream compared to how much cake was in it. The strawberries were also not as fresh as I had hoped for. However, the people there seem very nice and I was grateful I was able to pick this up close to the holidays when it may be busy. read more

The guy who helped me seemed like he was shocked when I walked in like he wasn't expecting any business that day. Cash only, no cards. The cake was mediocre and on the dry side. Hello my Yelpies, I was so excited to check out their special holiday cake. I saw on social media that they are making a "Turkey" Cake. YES, you heard that right. A TURKEY CAKE! Obviously it's not a real turkey but it's a sponge cake in the a shape of a Turkey which was perfect for my Thanksgiving celebration. The cake was a huge hit! Everyone was taking turn to take a picture of the cake. I was so happy to see how excited people were. I got the coffee and hazelnut flavor cake, the coffee sponge cake was delicious but the only reason i give it a 4 star is because I don't believe there were any hazelnut flavor in the cake. False advertisement to the below owner's response that the bakery also offers smaller sizes of 1/8 the sheet! We came here for the crispy cakes as what it was famous for and the man in the front told us the smallest size is quarter of a sheet and can't be smaller! Another customer and I are splitting the quarter sheet, we asked for help to package the other half into another box, the man said the store does not help repackaging and just gave us two gloves to hand pick and transfer by ourselves. Not to mention they charged $2 more for the additional paper box!!! Never buy again! Will go to Diamond Bakery for crispy cakes in the future as they offer much better services and the crispy cakes are in bigger pieces and offer 1/8 of a sheet! No wonder their multiple store locations are now down to one! read more

Wow haven't been back to this place in ages and with this recent experience I would suggest people to reconsider if thinking about getting a birthday cake. When called the day before to place order the person said words can be written on the cake during pickup. When picking up the next day, the guy told me he does not know how to write any words on the cake and the person who does left work already?! This is how you run business?? I've purchased over 20yrs for various friends and family and have never come to this situation where you can't write anything on the cake. Now the birthday cake has a big o blank space right in the middle without any words on it. Excuse my language but WTF?! This is my boyfriend's favorite bakery & I can see why. I've never done phone orders but there's always cakes ready in the cooler baked FRESH (day of). They have 6 inch, 8 inch, sheet sizes, all delicious. Their designs are pretty simple, either chocolate or plain white frosting but enough room where they can write something down for you (e.g Happy Birthday). Outside may be a little plain, but the inside is fluffy with light frosting in between layers and fresh strawberries! They also have cakes with fresh mango inside. It's sweet enough but not overwhelming like other cakes. And best of all, they're affordable ($20-$30). The service is alright. If you can speak Chinese, probably the better but the owners/workers do speak English. I believe I had an interaction with the owner's son & he was really nice! Wants to meet new customers & ensures they're kept happy. The owner is a boss lady, don't care, just get in & get your cake lol. Each cake comes with one candle & a plastic cake cutter. I loved this bakery. Their cakes are not too sweet. 6 years ago I got my daughter's birthday cake from here. I picked Minnie Mouse from their book. The cake was delicious and at the end my daughter got to keep the toy/cake topper that came with it. 6 years later, I decided to come back and order a cake for my other kid. We picked Pikachu from their book and was excited. However here it comes the disappointment part. When we picked up the cake it looked nothing like their design book and no cake topper or toys came with it either. The guy that was at the store did not speak english very well so he called someone and that person told us that cake does NOT COME WITH TOYS. Say what? I was never told . Mind you the guy who helped us take the order didn't speak english very well either but a simple "NO TOY" will work. I was upset and annoyed. I loved the cakes here but disappointed that they did not told us that it doesn't come with toy. I could have easily gotten some cake topper from amazon or target. You should put up some signs or teach your employees to say "NO TOY" that these type of cake doesn't come with cake topper. read more

I called a few days ahead of time and ordered a quarter sheet of the strawberry sponge cake for $32. I requested all the icing and decorations to be white as this was for a friend's bridal shower. We had ~20 guests and it was the perfect size to serve. I'm happy to report that the cake was a hit with all the guests! The cake wasn't too sweet, which many of the older guests appreciated, and because it's summer, the strawberries in the cake were extra sweet. There was too much frosting in certain parts of the cake that I scraped off while eating but aside from that, we were happy with what we got. Cash only! read more

I order a birthday cake for my daughter and pick up at 1:30pm yesterday and the guy work at the counter just hand me the cake. I asked to write happy birthday with my daughter name on it. He said he can't write it because he has ugly handwriting and hand me a cheap little happy birthday sign and told me to put on it. How can a place that make cake and have no baker available? I called a day ahead to order the 12 inch cake which was $40 12in cake is HUGE , this came fed 10 of us with plenty of leftover too. They're very nice on the phone and you can even pick the color of flowers! My mom loved the cake and style so much, she said it reminded her of cakes she grew up with so the style appeals to more traditional Asians in my opinion. I came around 12pm on a weekday. The bread selection was pretty full but the cake selection was lacking. All the display cases were empty except the refrigerator behind one of the display cases. I bought my dad a vanilla cake with taro filling for $24. It was decent. The filling was weird though. Most bakeries make a taro filling that's smooth and almost pudding like. The filling for the cake I bought was literally smashed taro. It was chunky and some parts were hard. I only came here after I couldn't get a cake at JJ Bakery. I've been a long time customer. Cathy's Bakery has always been reliable for me when I want to order birthday cakes and fruit tarts (pre-ordered). My favorite go-to is the triangle shaped egg sandwich. Today I went to pick up a cake and it was perfect as always. The issue I had was the lady at the store was pretty rude to my mom. I don't speak Mandarin but the tone she was using with my mom as a customer is rude. The lady was in a hurry to sell and bag items to us. My mom asked if these items can go in 1 bag, and the rest can go to another bag. The lady was angry and treated my mom as if her request was annoying. With COVID-19 and we are buying breads for different households, we wanted to separate bags. The lady stopped bagging sandwiches for my mom and threw the bag to the side. She was just so angry and in a hurry but we were the only customers in the store. My mom spoke to her in Mandarin asking for another bag so she can bag them herself. The lady didn't give it to her. Then again, after a minute, she came back to the counter area and gave my mom another bag. Suddenly another customer walked in when I paid in cash. The lady took my cash and handed me a receipt. She went over to another customer to help her. Then I realized she forgot to give me my change. I informed her that she forgot to give me change and she apologized and gave me my change. My mom felt awful being treated like that. Why are you in such a hurry when there is no one else? And if there was another customer, can you at least finish with us first and go help the next customer? With COVID-19, we are supporting local businesses and happy to come buy breads and cakes here. But if we are going to be treated like this, then it is hard to come back. Please be more kind and friendly to your customers. read more

My parents just now went to buy two sheet cakes: Taro and strawberry and after returning home to celebrate my sisters' birthday we realized after a bite that the taro cake went bad. We didnt touch the strawberry in fear that went bad as well. I'm not a fan of Chinese bakeries so if I think the breads are good, then it must be fabulous to other people's tastebuds. We were hungry driving around trying to kill time until we went to lunch. Lil guy was hungry and frankly, so was I. I asked hubby to pull into this little strip mall so I could just buy something from this bakery. I saw the curry puffs in the warming display. It says 'curry pie' and it was a buck. I thought, why not and bought it. I get back in the car and took a bite. It wasn't all that exciting. It wasn't hot and it wasn't spicy. Then lil guy said he was hungry so I go back inside and buy him a hotdog bun. I must say the bun surrounding the hotdog was seriously delicious. It was still warm and it was soft with that hint of sweetness. Together with the saltiness of the hotdog, the entire thing was so yummy we were prying it out of lil guy's hands so we could have another bite. If the bun is anything to go by, I'd say that the rest of the bready items would definitely be a hit. So during meal times & weekends, parking is sparce. Cathy's is known for their flaky, layer cake. Don't know the exact name but they'll know when you describe it. It's sold only by the entire sheet for ($10, roughly?) seems to be popular during holidays as I've seen many people line up for it, even pre-order them. They also offer several types of nicely decorated individual sized mousse cakes @ $3 each. And of course, what Asian bakery do not sell breads w/ pork sung or onions, pineapple breads... Etc. Overall, not a bad place to pick up some baked goods, but their selection is nothing like 85C or JJ in Arcadia. The baked goods they sell are good, but aren't anything so spectacular that I would go out of my way to get them. They also do custom cakes or any special occasions.
