I am a deep lover of Napoleon (Mille-feuille). I like it with crispy but not hard phyllo layers, mixed with cream. It has always been my favorite dessert. Mille-feuille is so flaky that it often makes me choke. Cathy's Bakery has a cake called crispy sponge cake, which is two slices of sponge cake with several layers of phyllo in the middle. The dry, flaky layers wrapped with moist sponge cake create a crunchy and crispy texture but won't make you choke. I have never visited Cathy's Bakery, and I didn't even know where it was until I checked Google Maps. The cakes were brought by my daughter's friend to my home on New Year's Day. We ate the cake while playing mahjong. It was sweet, but not too sweet. As a Chinese person, when we describe a cake or dessert, the best is "sweet but not too sweet", which means below average in sweetness is good. By the way, remember to eat them as quickly as possible. Once you leave them overnight, the crispy phyllo in the middle will become soft, and the whole cake will be a waste. Anyway, I never visited the bakery, but my daughter's friend brought us a box of 32 pieces of very tasty crispy sponge cake. It had a very good texture. We didn't finish them all, and it was still edible the second day. But by the third day, the phyllo became chewy, and I didn't want to have it anymore. Still, it's a good cake. I recommend it, but don't buy too much.

Decent bakery with a limited selection. This location is cash-only, so make sure to bring some. It's smaller than their other locations. I came to pick up a few hotdog buns--they tasted good. Nothing spectacular, but still good. Overall, a decent spot to pickup pastries.

    Fruit tarts. Simple and tasty.

We often forget to post good and rave about the places we take for granted. This is one of them. The fruit tarts are so tasty and well made. So are their Napoleon crunch cakes. Great service and communication with the staff as well. Thank you for making my son's birthday special each year!

Cash only but no sign posted. Limited options of bread -- and it was 1pm on a Tuesday. Rude service and hard to find parking. Cherry on top, the bread is just okay nothing special.

This is my go to place for Crispy Cakes! I ordered the same day (quarter sheet) for a birthday celebration and Cathy's Bakery came through! The filo dough was crunchy and cake was moist! The cake was already all decorated before I came for pick up. I think it was $38. Extremely reasonable! You have to tell them you want it with cream, otherwise, it will be bare with only the cake and filo dough. Cash only.

We've been ordering from Cathy's for two years now and they're one of the only remaining bakeries that does the crispy layers cake (see photo). In Canto, it's pronounced Chui Pei Dan Goh. Still very reasonably priced.

Ordered the taro, pudding spong cake with crispy pastry layers. The spring cake was moist and fluffy. Taro paste was smooth. Pudding was light and soft. Also it fits the Asian definition of good deserts: not very sweet!

I've been getting cakes here since I was a little girl and it's always a hit. We usually just add decorations ourselves. No frill kinda place. Cash only. The mango one is our go to. It's got sliced mango on the inside and out. Not too sweet. We've never tried chocolate cake with taro before, I think there was a mix up with the order but it was still yum.

The Chinese cupcake wrapped in paper was one of the best I've had. It was spongy, moist and just the right amount of sweetness. Pineapple bun is the Hong Kong style buns. The top is crispy while the rest of the bun is soft. Sesame bun was soft and filled with good amount of sesame inside. Egg tart was also good. The cashiers here are also super sweet - the black sesame bread sells out fast, so I usually call in ahead of time to ask if they have any and they'll set aside a few for me until I arrive, which I really appreciate :) Little things like that go a long way. As the name of the bakery implies, it's "Perfectly Sweet"…read more I'm generally a bit more wary of purchasing baked goods from non-Asian bakeries since they tend to be sweeter than what my palate likes, but not here! The hours are a bit limited, but I managed to make it in time to grab some pre-made baked goods to go. I got a bag of coconut macaroons, bag of several chocolate chip cookies, 2 red velvet cookies, a baked dog cookie biscuit, and a cute Keroppi sugar cookie. Most of these ended up being gifts, but I did enjoy one of the red velvet cookies and for an already sweet flavor profile with white chocolate chips in it, I was already fearing the worse, but went perfect with a glass of milk. The edges were nicely crisped by the baking too. Delicious. Love that they had a stock of cute, pre-decorated cookies available as well (some Sanrio characters, animals, etc.) They also list all the ingredients used in each of the baked goods that they have prepackaged, which is nice. It's also filled with a light, soft cream. DELICIOUS! I arrived at Old Ferry Donut (San Gabriel) on a Wednesday (around 3:42PM). Parking is simple. There's a competitive customer parking lot. And there's a city public parking lot about a two minute walk away. Staff is very friendly, professional, and welcoming. Staff maintained a bright smile throughout my visit. Staff immediately helped me. Customers can order at the self-service kiosk or counter; however, the kiosk felt very dated & the prices on the kiosk felt less transparent. I recommend just ordering at the counter. There's no penalty for using card at this donut establishment. As mentioned, I love the Tiramisu Donut ($4.95). It's not too sweet; rather, it all felt balanced. However, this is a VERY messy donut; I recommend eating this donut with a fork and knife. The powder fall everywhere, and your clothes can quickly get stained with chocolate powder. Still, it's a delicious pastry. On ambiance, Old Ferry Donut (San Gabriel) is comfortable. This business is more reminiscent of a cafe than a typical donut shop. There's customer internet with password; details on the counter. There's a gender neutral restroom. And there's an electrical outlet & outlet adaptor for devices. The location is fairly small; there's one interior table and one small counter. Fortunately, this place felt airy and well-ventilated. There's also some upbeat, fun music in this clean spot. Overall, I found unexpected joy at Old Ferry Donut (San Gabriel). There's sincere passion & hard work within these walls. If searching for a special donut for a special someone, this is an easy spot to recommend. 4.9 out of 5! Go!

(FYI - they are going to open a Goomo tea shop on the corner in the same space!) D'ange has so many fun flavors of buns. I really liked the taro with mochi one. The only thing about the buns is that the fillings tend to be only on one side of the bun, so there are been times as I'm biting into the bun, I'm not getting any filling until the last couple bites. They even sell cookies and all different flavors of toast that would make some yummy brick toast desserts! And if you need a whole cake, they have them in the case ready to go too! The buns I got were great, as were the Portuguese egg tarts. They even sold Chinese tamales at my last visit, so I picked one up too. Their cakes are the classic Chinese bakery style, light sponge cake layered with fruit and whipped cream. They make custom cakes in all different sizes and I think the pricing is pretty reasonable for what you get. Best of all, the cakes are fresh and not overly sweet, which is exactly how I like them. This time I ordered a quarter sheet chocolate cake with chocolate cream. It was really good, rich enough to taste like chocolate but not so sweet that it became overwhelming. Everyone at the party seemed to enjoy it. They also open at 8am which makes pickup convenient if you need a cake for an early event.
