The perfect distance from the shopping area and lots of food options nearby. Only downsize was the old timey heater was a bit noisy throughout the night. We just stayed at Cathy's for a quick two night getaway. The rooms are charming but show their age. Unfortunately for us the cons outweighed the pros and we will not be staying here again. We stayed in Cabin #2, was hoping to love the place as it has so much potential! If they update the beds and couch the cabin would be 4 stars. A good night's sleep makes or breaks your trip and we did not have one. Pros: Large 2 person indoor Jacuzzi bath that was very well cleaned. 2 person shower. King size bed. Heater and gas fire place worked well. Overall cleanliness was good. Cons: The most uncomfortable bed, very firm and worn out. We sank to the center of the mattress. The pillows were also very small, flat and worn out. Could not request more as there is no office. We both got very little sleep and woke up feeling bruised and soar all over. This put a damper on our trip. Couch was also very old and dirty, could not sit on it to watch TV as it was so worn out. No blinds over the front door window in front of the Jacuzzi bath. read more

The inside was dirty and had peeling wallpaper and a chunk of the blinds were torn off. I didn't stay the second night even though I paid for it so that says a lot! The paint was all chipped and the garbage outside was packed to the top. They have the faux fire and bathtub but if it's worn and dirty it doesn't work. We stayed in cabin 2 and it clearly has been a long time since they bothered to do any kind of maintenance on this place. When I sat on the couch I fell into it because the springs had given out. Broken window, loose fixtures, no blinds on the window on the front door. I had to hang a jacket in front of it. The bed was very uncomfortable so rather than stay a third night we went home. I texted the manager who is not on site and got no response. I do not recommend staying here. I know I won't ever again. read more

This was a decent place to stay during my trip to Big Bear. The location was convenient and felt safe and secure. Because the rooms and appliances are so old/dated, they did make creaks and noises throughout the night. I used the big bathtub, which was a delight! I also liked the no-contact check-in and check-out system. To note: Google Maps has two different locations when you type in "Cathy's Cottages" so I went to their sister location by accident and had to wait 30 min in the freezing cold before everything got sorted. After deciding upon a last-minute trip to Big Bear, I was pleased to find that a room was still available. There were no cabins available, I believe, but room 221 (Grandma's Attic) was. I wasn't expecting much since it was so last minute but I was very pleasantly surprised when I walked in, and I would like to stay in there again by choice! It was so cute and cozy, and I truly did feel like a grandmother decorated it (in a good way!) Even though we were on top of a cabin filled with many people, we could not hear them, which is something I was worried about but turned out not to be an issue. There was a cute bathroom with a checkered floor. There was a gas fireplace and a little patio that you could eat breakfast on. It was close to the lake and the little boardwalk in the lake. The bed had a cute quilt and there was a little nook by the window. The internet was super fast, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. A little bonus for me was the makeup-removing wipes! Also parking is really easy and there is parking available literally right outside each of the cabins. It wasn't perfect, but I didn't mind any of it. For example, once the water in our room completely turned off. I know things like this are inevitable, so what matters to me is how they handled it. And they handled it by sending someone RIGHT AWAY to fix it (hence the 5 stars instead of 4). The bed was a tiny bit hard, but that's just preference. And the flame from the fireplace was mostly blue, as if it wasn't turned up high enough. Also, be careful if you are using a GPS to not type in Cathy's Cottages, but instead their main address on Eureka (that's the only place you can check in). Its not too far, but it's kind of annoying to have to backtrack. And its really pleasant when you get in there (smells great, nice and warm, and there is coffee, tea, and cookies). We arrived in town at noon and stopped in at the office to see when we would be able to check in. There was no one at the front desk only an ipad with a womans face that you could only see her from her eyeglasses up. She never looked up at us. Our paperwork did not list the check in time. The face in the eye ipad said check in time was at 4pm. She said she would call us when out room was ready. We did not receive a call and showed up at 3:55pm. She said our room was not ready, the beds had not been made and told us it would be at least a half hour before the room was ready. once again she told us she would call us when it was ready. We returned at 4:30. We did not receive a phone call. When we tried to call the office, all's we got was a voicemail. There was a man at the front desk whose name I did not get but I will call him Dick because of the way he treated us. We told him this was our third attempt at trying to check in. He became indignant and said well is shows here in the computer that your room was ready at 4:00. I told him were there at 4 and were turned away. He became argumentative and just being a Dick. The customer service is basically non-existent. Then we found out that our cortege was not in town where the check in office is, but was 3 miles out of town. In addition, the cottage was located on the main boulevard adjacent to a circle K.. The view from the bathroom window overlooked a property that had an array of broken down cars, motorcycles, and other machinery. This was not the cozy mountain cottage we expected. My husband and I have thoroughly enjoyed every second of our experience here at Cathy's Cottages since even before check in. Josh and family were excellent from the time I made that phone call from San Diego to inquire about a room. They were great in person and the amenities they offered from the get go made us feel as though we were right at home. Inside the cottage has been wonderful. From the warm decorations and atmosphere, to having all the essentials provided to us, has left us wanting more. Enjoyable enough to book an extra night and call our bosses to take an extra day off from work. The hot tub has been used plenty and was definitely one of the highlights of the room. I've stayed here 8 times since 2010. Every time has been amazing and great. They are very accommodating. The rooms are wonderful ( always with extra little goodies in the bathroom, kitchen is supplied with paper towels, dish soap, dishes, silverware, etc...) a very comfortable bed with more than enough pillows, and I'm somebody who needs at least four to myself ;) there is also a circle K right & red box down the street, for all kinds of snacks, goodies & movies! =) Great place to enjoy the jetted tub, the romance! Also sitting on the very large porch enjoying nature is so Relaxing! The owners, the pool family, are one of the most friendly, accommodating, just very hands-on owners I've ever met. They recently re painted the rooms (at least cabin #6) Can't praise thsese cabins enough! If you have any problem at all they always go above and beyond to help! While many people's reviews are great, my experience didn't match. DON'T STAY IN ROOM #8!! Promised a fireplace and it didn't work. After quick communication with manager, Maintenance called and explained that yes, they knew it didn't work. I wiped up a little water from snow on the floor from my boots and the paper towel was filthy. The sink doesn't have a stopper to shave properly. The heater makes a lot of noise at night. The shower took me 10 minutes to get it to the right temperature. It was either too hot or too cold. TV volume doesn't go up high enough to hear well. Asked manager for partial refund since the fireplace didn't work as advertised. She said she'd contact the owner. Never heard back from anyone. To me, this place has enough tourist dollars to not have to worry about quality. read more

Great little romantic cabin. Wonderfully relaxing jacuzzi tub in front of a gas fireplace. Room was clean & fresh. Great cabin at a great price. Little bit noisy from the traffic across the street at Circle K, fortunately we had brought our own fan which helped drown out the street noise. Parking is right outside the cabin & lined with trees & bushes that helps with the view so you dont see everything across the street like the convenience store. Nice, cozy and romantic for sure! A jetted bath tub, love seat and bed all in front of the (gas, no wood) fireplace - yeahhh! Also a double head shower and a fridge and microwave - everything you could possibly need. The room could use some TLC updating. The outlets need to be replaced, the plugs just fell out. The phone had old directions above it that don't apply (and the directions on the paper we got when checking in- the directions didn't work either. I had to use my cell phone that thankfully worked in the mountains. The office is 3.5 miles away. They offer free wifi. The love seat had no more cush in the cushion. Decorated nicely in the 80's (it's now 2017) But yes, I'm giving them 4 stars! I really liked the place, it had everything to have a romantic weekend and it was about $150 per night. read more

When I arrived there was a lady and I asked for the bbq place and she said it's covered with snow but she told me that she is gonna bring me another one!!! They said we are sorry ,we are not gonna bring you one but told me that I can dig it and clean it by myself if I want to! I did it myself and it took me more than 2 hours. I hurt myself , I messed up my gloves and clothes but I made it! At the end I'm not complaining about anything but they are oke to send me an email that says I ruined two of your towels which is one and charged $10 for it!!! What a pleasant surprise! Found a great cottage with a fireplace and in-room hot tub for less than I usually pay for a hotel room in a non-tourist destination. Check in was quick and friendly. They have a library of DVD's they loan out, but with just about every cable channel available on the tv, I had plenty to watch. There's were 6 pillows on the bed, a comfy love seat and small dining table. Also included were a good-sized fridge and microwave with dishes, glasses, and silverware available as well. A Circle K across the street for any snacks/supplies and two grocery stores a short drive away, the location was great. Not next to the lake and a few miles from The Village, but I was very happy with this choice and enjoyed a nice night of peace and rest away from the big city. Will definitely be back. read more

Where do I begin? I always do a ton of research before selecting accommodations for a trip. This time was no different. I am a very picky person when it comes to where we sleep and shower, and I was very pleasantly surprised when we arrived at our cottage. The check in process was not only painless, it was actually enjoyable. Josh and Curtis (I hope I got your names right!) greeted us warmly, explained the do's and don'ts, and offered us hot tea and cookies. They took the time to suggest restaurants in the area, noting their favorites and the pros and cons of each. The office offers Yankee Candle votives for sale, and the office also lends candle holders for your convenience. Cathy's Cottages are a short drive from the Sleepy Forest office, and are very easy to find. There is a Circle K gas station across the street, complete with two Red Box movie rental kiosks which came in handy for renting a few DVD's to watch by the fireplace. Parking for your cottage is directly across from your unit. Literally, a four foot walk and you are at your door. The Cottage has a cute porch with chairs and a table for your enjoyment- weather permitting of course. Once inside we were immediately enveloped in warm vintage country goodness. The decor was vintage, yet tasteful. The carpet spotless, the linens clean and crisp. I can't stress enough that oftentimes the smaller details are what matter, and the staff here definitely care! Sleepy Forest is family owned and operated, which I have a soft spot for because we also own and operate a family owned business. We were delighted to find that there were lots of little goodies placed in our room. In addition to the regular soap, shampoo, and lotion - there were also makeup remover wipes, cough drops, hair styling samples, gum, and other goodies in the basket near the bathroom sink. There is also a small refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave, and a set of basic dishes to use if you need them. The shower is super huge with two shower heads to either enjoy by yourself, or with your significant other. Our cottage had a gas fireplace and a two person spa tub. The fireplace was gorgeous, and the tub was oh-so- relaxing. I actually started my next morning off with a luxurious bubble bath in front of the fireplace, while watching History Channel. This normally stressed out mama was one happy and relaxed girl :) My husband and I plan on returning in a few months with our girls to stay for a weekend, and just our luck - Sleepy Forest also offers family cottages. If every stay is this good, we might just have to make this a ritual every few months. read more

Well after all of the online hype about Josh and Bob I was a little sad that they were not there to check us in, BUT the two guys who were were also very nice and down to earth. They told us about the restaurants in the area and made us feel very welcome. We stayed in cabin 228 which had a queen bed and 2 murphy beds. I read a review from a year ago complaining about the bed in there and I have to agree with that person, the bed does kind of suck. It really caves in in the middle which I can't stand. Would be fine if you were sleeping alone. I ended up sleeping with one of my kids on the murphy bed after the first night. Room was somewhat clean but I did find about several long black hairs in various places on the beds which always grosses me out but then again I am a germaphobe. I am a chick so I know hair does fall out but maybe housekeeping should wear their hair up so that wouldn't happen. Also when we folded up one of the Murphy beds (it was left down when we arrived), there were cheetos and other leftovers from the previous guests. Made me feel like the room was not vacuumed as thoroughly as I would prefer. There is a fireplace in the room which is also the heater... does a great job at warming the place up and the mini fridge and microwave are awesome to have. Circle K across the street meant 24 hour access to candy and redbox- yes please! All in all a great little place to stay and you can get a KILLER deal by booking on their website. read more

Stayed here for a week due to work. This place is really old and run down and it shows. The room was covered in a dark green wallpaper. It also looked really old. There was no AC unit in the room. So when I would come back to my room at the end of the day, the room would be at least 10 degrees hotter than it was outside. You can't leave the windows open while you are gone because it's not really located in the best of neighborhoods. There's a Circle K gas station at the corner so you have people walking up and down the streets day and night. Some of them looked pretty shady. Plus the windows are really old and single pane. I would open the windows to cool the room down and before I knew it mosquitoes and flys were in my room. The room also had a hot tube in it. The hot tube also showed its age. It had chips in it and a few of the jets didn't work. The room has had carpet through it including the surrounding area by the hot tub. The carpet was old as hell and had stains all over it. Like I said the tub was surrounded by carpet. So I'm sure it's safe to assume that carpet gets really wet. The box springs on the bed had a piece of plywood screwed into them. I'm guessing because they're old and sag. The couch was also old. It smelled really bad and when you sat in it you hit the frame and sink all the way in. The tv was tiny and you needed two remotes to watch it. I understand you are in the woods and looking for something rustic but this place is just old and dumpy. read more

I've roomed twice at Cathy's Cottages, a romantic getaway in Big Bear geared toward couples. My initial experience here with my spouse, in 2011, was as good as it gets. Picture: kitchenette, in-room jacuzzi, king-size feather bed, gas-log fireplace, cozy country decor (pleasantly quaint) --- a "best all around value" for the money --- and centrally located near all the great Big Bear attractions to boot! In fact, truthfully, the spouse and I were so happy with our little hideaway that we jealously guarded the exact location of our stay lest this place be mobbed and we find it impossible to book another year! After nothing short of an outstanding "first impression", my spouse and I concluded that Cathy's Cottages would become an anniversary tradition. These haven't exactly been easy times --- the recession dealt us some massive blows, "home sweet home" is overcrowded with live-in relatives and six months of the spouse traveling for a graveyard gig left us exhausted to boot! And so it was imperative that we found a way to return, to carve out much-needed quiet time together. There was no question where we would book: Cathy's Cottages, of course! This past October we were booked in a different cottage --- one that looks superficially identical with its own particular characteristics. For instance, the gas log fireplace was on a 30-minute timer --- the first cottage enabled us to set it for an entire hour. It was quite late when we took notice, likewise, that the in-room jacuzzi tub was running slow, significantly slower than our recollection from the previous year. The cottage we had booked on our first stay, meanwhile, was occupied. when kindly offered to relocate elsewhere we learned --- before we moved our things, fortunately --- that the jacuzzi tub there also took about 50 minutes vs. the 25 we recalled of the previous year/cottage. Suffice it to say, a series of "issues" culminated in the realization that our in-room heater was not functioning properly. Though set for 70 degrees, we awoke twice to a snappy 60! In the end, however, we are happy to report that the owner, Bob, though on vacation himself, made right by enabling us to make up the lost time and sleep. As luck would have it, the cottage we had so thoroughly enjoyed the year previously opened up on day three of our stay and we couldn't be happier. Now that all is well that ends well, we've decided to let our best-kept-secret out: Cathy's Cottages is a fantastic place to go for a romantic getaway. Our only advice? Arrive early and make sure everything is ship-shape before you settle in. We've belatedly (but thankfully) learned that a personal policy of making a thorough check of everything in one's room before unpacking one's bags makes good sense whenever and wherever we travel. We had an experience at a national hotel chain during business travel this past summer where management seemed inconvenienced to learn of problems --- not answering the phone late at night, informing us that maintenance was unavailable to repair a problem before our stay ended, etc. Cathy's Cottages offers an entirely different experience --- a refreshing focus on creating repeat customers of one-time guests. That assurance counts for a whole lot in our book! read more

I stayed here a few weeks ago with my boyfriend. We LOVED these cottages! The cabins are big and full of every amenity we needed- fridge, coffee pot, huge double head shower, jacuzzi, comfy bed, fireplace, etc. We were blown away with the quality of everything. Also, Cathy's Cottages is located a few miles from downtown Big Bear, which we actually enjoyed. There are many businesses around (convenience store, has station, restaurants) but it's not as crazy busy like the main drag is. We will be back to these adorable cabins. We stayed here because Sleepy Forest wasn't available for the days we wanted. Although it's a little out of the way in Big Bear City, it's not a terrible drive...at least not during the week. Check in and out was easy at the Sleepy Forest office. The room itself was really nice and much bigger than the pictures online let on. It had a small fridge and microwave that we used to keep drinks cold and make popcorn for our movie nights. Movie nights made easy because of the Red Box at the Circle K across the street. We did have a problem w/the VCR/TV, but upon calling the office, they came out and fixed it for us right away. Had a coffee maker and hair dryer. All the creature comforts. It's not a full maid service, but they changed our towels every day. The bad part about where we stayed (the Aviator room) was that it was not it's own cabin. Although we were there during the week and the other 2 adjoining rooms (one above and one next to it) were vacant for 3 of the 4 nights we were there, When the 2 rooms were occupied on Thursday night, you could hear lots of noise from the other rooms. Also, if you're a light sleeper, you'll be up from all the noise from the main road. It quiets down around 10PM, but it's still pretty noisy. For the price, i can't complain too much. It's much cheaper than staying near the lake areas...just bring some ear plugs and you'll fare much better. Since the room itself is so nice, it's worth the minor inconvenience. Customer service here (whether Cathy's Cottages or Sleepy Forest Resort) is always great. read more

This has to be the best choice I've ever made. I will never stay anywhere else in big bear. If you're having doubts; no need. The check in is at a different location, but it's in no way inconvenient. It's actually on the way to the cottages. Cathy isn't actually present in person but she's warm and welcoming and helpful (she's live on the i pad answering everyone's questions) the cottages are just down the road and close to EVERYTHING. There's a circle k no more than a 20 second walk from your cottage. There's McDonald's, Taco Bell, and el pollo loco down the street. The cottage feels unreal. You walk up and you have your own shaded little porch with chairs and a table you can chill outside on. You walk in your cottage and there's a little room with a table for breakfast, a little bench and a coat hanger. Then you pass through the door to your beautifully made bed and awesome fire place. The tv is also new and flat screen. Your room comes with a microwave and a sink and even some dishes. The mini fridge is a nice touch as well. The shower is no joke!! The pressure is awesome and the shower head changes color. Seriously. If you're looking for somewhere to stay look no further. Cathy will be seeing us a lot more!! read more

My husband and I stayed here for one night to attend a nearby wedding. We wanted something close to the venue but affordable. Let me tell you, Cathy's Cottages met our expectations and then some! We stayed in the Aviator room (#8) and LOVED it! It has three beds (two are Murphy beds) and can sleep six people comfortably. Came with a dining room table, couch, coffee table, mini-frig, microwave and dishes. It's almost like a studio apartment. We were so surprised how many amenities they provided in our room. Oh and coffee and coffee maker too! We didn't get to use the fireplace but that was a nice option too. The bathroom is clean, well supplied and the shower is immaculate. Looks brand new!! Very important :) The gentlemen who checked us in at Sleepy Forrest was a sweetheart. We arrived earlier than check-in time but he said, "no problem" your room is ready. I can go on and on but will keep it to this limit. Romantic, fun, private, cute, good location (except next to main street cars can get noisy). We will be back and I do recommend staying here. Pros: It was a large room and the layout was nice. The jacuzzi, double shower heads, and vanity sink was a nice touch. Ours had hardwood/laminate throughout so it was nice and clean and didn't smell moldy. They accidentally gave us a key to another cabin next door and that one had carpet and we noticed that it smelled musky/moldy, so I would request the hardwood if you can't handle that smell. Cons: They gave us a key to the wrong room! We walked in and saw a purse/luggage and someone clearly was using the bathroom. We called the front desk and told them what happened and he said he would get us the correct key right away. We waited a good 30 minute before he got there he didn't even apologize. I wouldn't be posting this part if they were a tad apologetic, at least to the people in the cabin that we walked in on, but he responded, "oh this doesn't usually happen" and chuckled. It was so off-putting. Some of the blinds are kind of see through/broken and the front porch light doesn't turn off so it was really bright in the room all night long. I could even see the circle k sign from my bed through a crack in the blinds. We were told that the parking space in front of the cabin was our parking, but when we got back from dinner, all of the spaces were occupied so we had to find parking in the back. I'm not even sure if it was a ligitimate space but there was nowhere else to park so we just risked it. The space heater is only next to the bed so the rest of the room was cold. I'm still giving it 3 stars instead of one because it still had nice features to the room and it was clean, but because we've stayed at other places Big Bear; this place was just ok even without the incidents. read more

This is probably the cutest little cabin ever, we literally didn't want to leave the room. It comes with all the essentials. The only downfall was it's not nestled around trees like it is where you check into the office. but we definitely enjoyed our stay and will be back soon. read more

Amazing place. The front desk staff were amazing. They accommodated our unusual check in times and were so incredibly friendly. The rooms are clean and well-decorated and furnished. The rock tub and the double shower were very romantic. Would highly recommend this place. read more

Cathy's Cottages was a wonderful place to stay for a couple of nights! The owner was very kind and accommodating. House keeping did a great job tidying up the room and restocking while we were away one of the days. I can tell that the family who own these cottages care about how comfortable their guests are. The only thing I would say was missing during our stay in room #3 was a window A/C unit, where I noticed one of the other cottages had one. Our room had a window fan which was nice at night time but wasn't sufficient enough during the day. It wasn't too bothersome considering we were out and about most of the day and it didn't get that hot in the room but it would have been even more comfortable to be in a cooler room, just preference. :) All in all, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a private getaway! read more
