We recently moved into a condo and had not yet had occasion to test the guest bathroom shower. Two days ago, we realized the hot water really wasn't hot enough for a friend's upcoming visit, so we called Catons. They scheduled the appointment promptly and easily. The appointment day was complicated by my return travel on the train from New York, but their dispatch team made it all happen, coordinating their schedules and mine. Shortly after arriving home, Kenny arrived and quickly assessed the issue. He fixed the problem quickly and was very professional and courteous throughout. Do NOT hire this company. They were hired to do a "complete re-pipe" of the lower level of a residence/animal sanctuary where I am employed as the caretaker. The estimate and follow-up work orders were very clear in wording- a complete repipe with ALL copper pipe removed and it was to take 4-5 days. However, after I received the close out ticket stating this was done, I inspected the downstairs and saw many spots where 2-5 ft of old pipe had been left behind, particularly in high-stress areas such as tie-ins and connections to fixtures. So I had the property owner as well as an acquaintance who is a licensed master-plumber review the work. Both agreed it was sub-par and did not fulfill the contract. And so my many phone calls began... The first person I spoke to was polite enough and told me he'd have a manager call me back asap. Except he relayed nothing of the issue to the manager. So I had to start from the beginning. The manager, seemed to have no knowledge of the job and got an attitude right away, interrupting and barking "ma'am" at me repeatedly. He argued with my assessment of things but in the next second, would tell me he had nothing to do with this job!! Ultimately, he told me to just wait for a call from a gentleman who had visited our job site and who's team had completed the work. And so enters John, so far...the worst. John ALSO used the excuse of being unfamiliar with the job (what??!), also became sarcastic quickly, and could do very little to help. He ended our first call to speak to one of his plumbers, Andy, and then called me back. He attempted to use the excuse that copper pipe had been left because it was behind cabinets they would have had to remove... First off, no. This is apparently ADDITIONAL copper pipe left behind. After all, if the all the copper pipe had been behind drywall and cabinets...we never would have been able to see it. The many feet of copper pipe I had originally complained about was easily accesible/visible. John/Andy also said that the old pipe had been left behind cabinets only because they did not have permission to remove the cabinets but were unable to advise me of any attempts to contact either the owner or caretaker (myself). Nor did they make any note of this problem on the closing work ticket. Bottom line, the work done simply does not match what was promised in writing in the estimate or what was stated in the follow-up tickets. Our problem has still not been resolved...a FOURTH person was to call yesterday but apparently John never actually told his employee about the appointment. I would also like to note that no one from Caton's has offered a single apology for the the way the house was left or the time-consuming, disorganized way my complaint has been handled. My overall feeling in dealing with Catons employees? They took advantage of the fact the property owner told them he would be out of the country for a few mos AND if you are a woman trying to deal with them? You will be disrespected all the more. Catons were very fast in coming out- same day. I asked for a garbage disposal and was quoted $450 on the phone. I then told her I had a $50 coupon. She told me to give it to the plumber. John arrived about 2 hours later and did a great job getting out a stubborn, rusted unit and replacing with a new. However, he told me the girl on the phone forgot the $68 diagnostic fee. Since I requested the new disposal, I didn't see any need for diagnostics. New total- $468 with the coupon. Good, fast, pleasant work; questionable price. I wasn't going to complain about $50 but next time, I'll ask more questions. Should have seen the deal here. It looked better. I'll use them again. A day later--- Caton's just called to refund me the $68 diagnostic fee. What a great way to run a company . I'm impressed that they want customers to be satisfied by doing the right thing. They said they would refund the money even if I didn't add to my review. I will definitely be using them again. Thanks so much. read more

For decades I had periodic problems with sewer backups to the finished basement of our 1906 house. Numerous plumbers tried to diagnose and fix the problem, which is part stemmed from roots in the city sewer. Finally I tried Catons. They used cameras to discover that there was a problem with the original sewer line. They built another sewer line and pump and I have had no problems since. The basement had an expensive tile floor. They managed to minimize damage to the tiles and we were able to restore the floors to a perfect condition. It was expensive, but worth it. The work was done reasonably quickly and in a professional manner. I wish I had contacted them first; it would have saved thousands of dollars in damage to furniture and equipment and many unpleasant hours cleaning up the mess read more

So I have had two very experiences with this company. I have an issues of water back flowing into the house. The 1st time the plumber told he would snake my outside line and that the break was on Baltimore County side of the pipe and they would send out a crew with a camera to confirm that the break was a county issue so I could contact them to fix it. No crew with camera ever came. A month and 1/2 later I had the same problem & this plumber told me since I have and outside access the county would snake the pipe for FREE ! & once they got tried of snaking my pipe they would fix the problem. So the 1st time plumber totally ripped me off! read more

I just used Catons Plumbing Geipe Rd location and they did an excellent job. I called scheduled an appointment today and they accommodated me with my crazy schedule. I arrived home from work at 7:03 they were here by 7:15. The plumber Lal # 2765 was excellent and was very professional. He showed and explained to me everything he was doing. He made recommendations, and cleaned up after himself. He started around 7:30-7:40 and was done by 9pm. I would highly recommend him and the company again. I would give no stars if I could... Had to get a main water valve replaced as a result of a home inspection. I called a week earlier and explained to customer service that the water to the building (i live in a condo) had to be turned off in order to replace. They said "no problem" and scheduled me for the following week between 10-2..(they specifically chose those hours so the water being off would not impede on the building residents). I sat there repair day and waited...and waited...and waited.. every time I called the dispatcher she told me "they are still on a job and I don't know when they will be available..sorry I don't know what to tell you". I reiterated with her that the building water was being cut off and it needed to be done before the bulk of the building residents get back from work. Not a care from them. So I waited till 4pm and finally called to cancel. And the dispatcher had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to reschedule with them....not even if Jesus asked me to!!! I understand the concept of the scheduling "time frame" but in my realm of common sense, I'd do the job that's gonna take the less time, but effect the most people first...or maybe even second. Hot water heater went up; was old when the house was purchased and it gave out mid-afternoon Friday. Tech, Thomas, arrived within the estimated time frame and made arrangements for picking up and installing a new unit Saturday. He was polite, knowledgeable, respectful, and fastidious in his appearance and his work. Great customer service skills complemented his technical skills and work ethic. I had a main water line leak in the front lawn and was given notice by the county to replace in 10 days. Since I had Caton previously do small plumbing repairs I had them do this work. They provided an estimate and started the work in a couple of days. They didn't finish the work and had to come back. The second visit cost another $795, after already paying $4,000 for the original work. The front lawn was left a mess and the pipe is sticking out of the front lawn now. It an unsightly mess. Never again will I have them do work. I have tried to contact the general manager with no luck. After leaving several messages and giving the company a chance to rectify this situation I'm posting this to warn others. read more

Thank you, Yelp, for filing a formal complaint on my behalf. Because of that complaint, I heard from Roto-Rooter, an (older?) sister company, and from the general manager of Catons Plumbing. I received an apology for the plumber's critical omission (not checking and snaking the waste line from inside the house) and a full refund. The general manager expressed his regret that he did not hear about the problem until now, as he would have liked to have had an opportunity to make the situation right. My first call about the clogged drain was on 26 July. My follow-up call was on 2 August, one week later, when I spoke to the service manager. Problems continued until another company did the waste line bypass yesterday (18 August). I heard nothing from Catons between 2 and 19 August, when Yelp filed the complaint. Perhaps, if I had escalated my complaint earlier, Catons might have resolved it sooner, but, honestly, the waste line problems were happening too fast for me to spend time arguing with them about not doing the job properly. I am glad that I will receive a full refund. This is the best possible result to a very unfortunate situation. read more

The tech snaked the clog just fine but broke a pipe when doing so and told me the pipe was like that when he got there and quoted me $500 to fix it. When I explained that I would have noticed a puddle of water on the floor he didn't know what to say but still refused to admit he broke it. Horrible. Called to have a gas dryer installed. I had to reschedule and added an additional service, moving a gas line two inches so my oven would fit flush to the wall. (Somehow the inspector on our home purchase missed this). Plumber came, told us it was 68/half hour and I had to pay for him to drive to Home Depot and pay 20% mark up o the materials AND that it would be at least 700 bucks to put the pipe in for my dryer. To go 10 feet across a cellar. So, he spent 40 minutes telling us this, then took 1 hour to drive to Home Depot and then do the stove job. I spent 400 bucks to move a line 2 inches and I got charged two hours of work for something that actually took about 40 minutes to do. I also got charged to turn off my gas main, turn it back on, turn on my pilot light and some mysterious diagnostic charge. Just horrible. Should have found a plumber to do a free estimate (my bad) but seriously. So disappointed. Will never, ever call again. read more

3-4 stars. Bottom Line: 4 stars because of thorough work, but prices are a secret until a technician arrives. I've had Catons do work 3 times over the past couple years: mainly cleaning roots from main sewer line. I've had a different employee each visit, and they are all professional, courteous, and up-front with what work will be performed. The work is thorough, and they are generally a solid company. My only hesitation with Catons is the pricing... it seems haphazard and has noticeably increased, at least for the sewer line clean-out. It would be nice to have a ballpark price before the technician arrives, but this is not offered. I suppose this policy makes sense for jobs more diagnostic in nature, but it's frustrating when I say "I need the roots in my main residential sewer line to be cleaned out" over the phone and that happens be a fixed-price item on the tech's lookup sheet when he arrives. I get it, it's easier to secure my business when the tech is already in my house... but it feels sneaky. Also, to my surprise, the price for a sewer line clean-out went up either 20% or 38% in 1.5 years, depending on whether you consider before- or after-discount pricing (discounts seem to be randomly thrown in). read more

After my second bad experience with Caton, I am never using them again. First time we used them was for a leak in the ceiling. $475.30 later and a hole in our ceiling, water is still coming out. Their excuse was, "it's not a plumbing problem". Second bad experience was with a broken garbage disposal. The plumber came and spent 5 minutes in our house, didn't get any tools out, and simply hit the reset button located on the backside of the disposal (I didn't know it was there otherwise I would have tried that), yet we end up with a bill for $229. This company is money hungry and deceiving. Highly recommend using another company for your plumbing issues. read more

We used Catons for a couple large jobs several years ago and were pleased. But, the last 2 times we've had them out I did not feel they sent out skilled plumbers. We have a smell of sewage gas coming up through our utility sink in the basement. The first tech was a Journeyman Plumber, who I learned later is not supposed to go out on calls by himself. Journeyman are supposed to be accompanied by a Master Plumber. This guy didn't seem to have a clue as to what was the causing the smell and seemed to be making up things to tell me to appease me, such as, just dump a 5 gallon bucket of water down the sink everyday. I called the office and asked that they send out someone of better quality because I did not have any confidence in the skill of the first technician. The second technician came out and and wasn't any better. He walked into my unfinished basement and said, I smell it, it's your washing machine. You need to clean the tub of your front loader. He said this when he was 4 feet from my washer and the door was closed! When I asked him to bend down and smell the tub of my washer to see if it smelled like raw sewage he looked at me like I was crazy. I couldn't wait to get the guy out of my house! I will never call Catons again. read more

I set up for Caton's to come out to look at a small repair I needed. I was told by customer service that there would be a window of 10:30-2:30pm for the service call and that they would be in on Friday, August 17th. I waited and waited and waited...no call, nothing. I decided around 3pm that I would reach out and contact the customer service again. The person emails me back and says "Oh- the person has been trying to call you repeatedly, but got a busy signal." First of all, I have a cell phone! There are no busy signals!! Second of all, NOTHING showed up in my call log or voicemails. I contacted customer service via email again and said the same thing "I have not received any calls and cell phones do not have busy signals." The person NEVER responded to that, but guess what? I got a call from Caton's plumbing just fine at 9:40pm! I mean that's 7 hours later! I understand things come up, but to lie to me and then not even have the decency to call me to say that they couldn't come is ludicrous. I even called Verizon to make sure I wasn't crazy and they said there were absolutely no incoming calls from Caton's all day and that cellphones do not give out busy signals. Bad business practices if you ask me! Very saddened. read more

I was given a 4 hour window which is acceptable and within 1 hour, they were at my door. He shared the price list so I felt confident that I wasn't taken for a ride. I had a tub clogged up at my rental property so I called Caton's . The tenant said they came out and quoted a higher price thinking it would require additional time. However, they came back and fixed the problem in less time than required and charged me $200 instead of the original $348 they quoted. The only issue was that I really didn't get to find out what the real problem was which caused the tub to overflow. I asked them to call me and tell me what the problem was but nobody did. They just unclogged it somehow. Luckily it's been working since but I would have appreciated a follow up call to describe what was done to fix it. read more

I woke up on a Saturday morning to a kitchen floor and cabinet under the sink filled with water. I called Catons's around 7:45 AM and the plumber was at my house within and hour. He diagnosed the problem (the hose in the pull out faucet had sprung a leak. He offered me several alternatives including just replacing the hose or getting a new faucet. I went with getting a new faucet. He went to the plumbing supply store, emailed me photos of the replacement faucets that were available so I could pick the one I wanted. By 1:00 PM I everything was fixed. I would call Caton's again for any plumbing needs I have. read more

The plumber came and snaked the toilet after emptying the bowl in the back yard, which contained very little human waste. Charge @ $500. He said he couldn't give me a guarantee on the work because it seemed as if there was something obstructing the flow. The camera tech came in a few days and found that roots had grown into the sewage pipe. The next tech came by to give me three options for dealing with that condition ranging from $500 to $18,000. read more

Called on Friday night just before 8pm. Told them we needed our main line snaked. My husband had tried it with the manual snake, but couldn't get it clear. The person said they could have someone out between 8-12am. At 10pm, we received a call that they would not be able to come out until 11-12 on Saturday. I told them that was unacceptable, they told me someone would be out tonight and they needed to send someone out tonight. I have waited for 2 hours when I could have called someone else. She told me she would see what she could do, but she didn't think it was going to happen. Hung up with her and called Roto Rooter. Within 5 minutes they called and said someone was on the way. 12-3-15 in the afternoon they came quickly to help with a leaking toilet. After some investigation found a break in the basin. The plumber was very helpful with information so I could confidently choose a correct toilet for replacement. He was efficient in getting the work done considering all the steps he had to go through due to the Catonsville (913 Southeriidge) house being so old. They arrived on time, were very professional and left everything very clean. The toilet was replaced and is working great. I would recommend Catons Plumbing to any of my friends. On June 24, 2011 Catons Hearing & Air made a 2nd service call to our home in Eldersburg, MD to fix our upstairs HVAC unit. I requested they not send the same technican from the week before that fell down our attic steps. They did. In the attic he took a misstep and fell through our 2 story hallway/foyer. Catons promised to repair the damage and restore our home to its original state. They patched the hole and tried to paint the ceiling but due to paint fading and us burning fires in the fireplace the paint job does not make and it is an eye sore. The estimate to restore our property to it's original state is $3500 - $4000 due to the running 2 story foyer/ceiling and Catons is refusing to repair - they have stated they did everything they will do. DO NOT CALL THEM TO WORK ON YOUR HVAC! read more

All we wanted was our drain snaked. The total fee would have been $550.00 plus (including the $65.00 to roll the truck) for the charge for the snaking and "video inspection" that were one product. They would NOT clean our line without including the "very important" video of our pipe (which had a simple clog from a toilet). The hard sell was embarrassing as the guy walked out, continuing to try to convince my wife to buy their service after I blew them off. This company is interested in making money, not in providing a fairly priced service. Avoid, unless you have money to spend on useless services. read more

I called Caton's Plumbing based on a friend's referral, wow what a scam. The company is owned by Roto Rooter, one of the worst plumbing company around. They sent a technician to my home, he was on time, with a bad attitude. I asked him if he had a journeyman's license, his response did not have a direct yes or no. Then he looked at my plumbing problem, and I asked again about his journeyman's license, or his master license number, still no response! The work is finished, thank god it was nothing major. He gave me a business card just in case I needed more services taken care of. I did some investigating of my own; he has NO journeyman's card and is NOT a master plumber. So, who guarantees the work the Caton's technician provided if he is not licensed by the state. Beware- don't fall for the southern voice and charm. read more

Our house had a 26-year-old possibly leaking Polybutylene water service line that was going to need to be replaced. It also happens to be one of the longer water lines in our zip code that I know of on the edge of the service area for public utilities. I spent the last year looking for estimates and was unable to get anyone to call back as most plumbers run screaming when they see how long they have to run the line. I had forgotten that I had gotten an estimate from Catons years back when I first started budgeting for the replacement. It was a slow process but that is nature of this kind of work which is why its so important to do something like this proactively as my neighbors soon found out when their water line failed this summer. We lucked out with scheduling as the horizontal boaring crew wanted to start work the week we were on vacation. I setup a lock box, gave them an alarm code and came back to a brand new 600+ foot water service line that has noticeable better pressure and no risk of exploding in the middle of the night because some moron back in the late 70s decided that cheap plastic pipe was the way of the future. Pricing was right in the middle. I've had cheaper and I've had as expensive as 20K. Catons was right in the middle and it did not cost me a cent as they work with the county to spread the cost out in your property taxes over a 40-year period. The cheapest guy never returned my phone calls and I'm guessing was not up to the job. read more

i first used Caton's to repair a toilet. the whole experience went absolutely smoothly. the repair person actually came early after calling first, no problem making an appointment. i asked Bruce to look at my sump pump while he was at my house as it had been running non stop. he told me that it was wearing out and that unfortunately when sump pumps fail basements flood. he advised me to buy a sump pump. he wrote down the specs . i bought it. called him back. again it went perfectly smoothly. he came on time installed the new pump. the next day it rained 5 inches. i was so glad that i had replaced the old one. in my experience catons is well run and professional. work is scheduled and done without angst and missed appointments read more

The primary bathroom toilet overflowed due to a clog in the main, which I didn't know at the time and the second bath toilet overflowed as well. I asked for online quotes around mid-night and by 7:30am received one call of the four I names obtained and was in touch with a tech by 10am that same day. The tech accessed my problem on the phone pretty quickly and was at my home and went right to work within a couple of hours. He checked the drain outside the home first and then cleaned main in the basement and found what was causing the problem, then removed the primary toilet only to find another clog. Within a couple of hours my problems were resolved and we had toilets to use again! The price was reasonable and even had a water restoration tech out to the house to look at damage the same day. I was pleased overall with the service I received with Caton's Plumbing as their staff was courteous and professional in addressing my needs. "Technician" cut my pipe without my consent on what was to be only a trouble shoot call!!! i was not informed if what the actual issue was, I was not informed of procedure for repair and cost. "Technician" cut my pioe while i was chasing dow my kids without my consent. I was actaully in the middle of saying "no repairs, we go no further" when the guy dropped his hand...allowing my pipe to fall from ceiling!! You got me; now I definitely need that pipe fixed. Oh, not to mention his lack of professionalism. He ruined my ceiling and now I have to remove cabinets to repair the damage he made when he starting pulling out drywall, not cutting neatly but breaking off chunks of drywall. He didn't make any attempts to clean up either. He used my trashbags and my towels only because i didn't want a mess. "Technician" LIED about how long repair took! Also, I was charged for the hour it took him to go to hardware store seven minutes away to buy a copper pipe and two fitters!! Receptionist at company was of no help. Oh! $95 for the firat half hour, $65 for every half hour after?!?! I only know that because i had to chase after the dude to get a copy of the workslip. Never again and I tell everyone to steer clear of this company. No legitimate business here. read more
