I finally made it here! I happened to find myself wandering around the bustling cosmopolitan that is Dixon. I was overwhelmed by my restaurant choices. The Tavern on the Green, Tadich Grill, The French Landry, LA Halle, and Spago all sounded good but didn't make the cut. So there I was at Cattlemen's wondering if the food was as good as I've heard. I order a steak. Ques the suspense music. Duh, duh, duh da... It came with salad, bread, and garlic fries. The salad was so crisp and succulent I ordered seconds. No kidding! I love salad. The kitchen had run out just as I ordered so they sent their interns (interns get all the dirty work) into the fields at night to cut me fresh greens. Yep, it was that fresh. The bread was this half sourdough round. It was lightly toasted on the outside, tender and moist on the inside. Just the way I like it. It must have been baked the night before. You don't really appreciate bread until you've had really good and really fresh. What about the steak you say? I was just getting to that. I ordered a 20oz cowboy steak. It was BIG. Big enough for a ravenous ranch-hand hungry from punching cattle all day. It was cooked perfect, tender and had great aged beef flavor. Now you want to know about the fries? Don't worry, I didn't forget them. I just couldn't eat them... Ha! Well, I couldn't eat them right then anyway. I was so full from salad, more salad, bread, and a giant steak I had to take them home. You know what? Those fries were still good when I snacked on them later. Overall it was a great steakhouse experience. Now, with the dinner for two deal you get to chose 1 of 4 appetizers, 2 of 6 entrees, and 2 desserts!!! Yes two DESSERTS, shut the front door! It was tons of food, my gosh!!! So for our 1 appetizer, we chose the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail... Tasty, not bad, not amazing either. For our entrees, I picked the Grilled Salmon very tasty and plump, thought they had brought me chicken by mistake, they assured me if was fish LOL and my friend chose the 9.oz Prime Rib which he said was a little overcooked for his medium request but seasoned very well and he finished completely. For our two desserts... Drum roll... We chose the Grand Canyon Cheesecake, SO HUGE!!! Nothing special than your normal cheesecake from the Cheesecake factory however about 3 times in size so if you love cheesecake dive on in! And... We also chose the deep fried apple pie... Oh S$#^ imagine this... Apple pie filling wrapped in pie crust and then fried crispy and put in front of you piping hot with big dollop of vanilla ice cream and then drizzled with caramel sauce Ooooh my!!! Bang for your Buck! I've been going here since I was old enough to eat my order of Beef Back Ribs. I'm more inclined to order steak nowadays, but there was a period in my childhood where watching the waiters bring my order on a large metal platter filled me with glee and I'd start hopping on the hard but finely finished wooden benches. Ah, the good times. This location is right off the busy 80 and was usually packed with people heading toward Tahoe/heading out from Tahoe so mostly tourists and locals. Now mind you my parents were willing to drive the 30 minutes from the country outback just to take us here for a monthly meat worshipping: the ritual would still remain with me. For and price of maybe around $20 (if you order the BBQ Beef Back Ribs) the entree comes with large four ribs, a side of baked potato, and all the salad and sourdough bread you can muster your chops to engulf. If you order anything else (such as their to-die-for button mushrooms sauteed made lovely in a little red wine and lots of butter or their twice baked potatoes) these are extra, so bear that in mind. I've also had their Rib-Eye as well as the Porterhouse. The meanest SOB the West of Sacramento that covered the entire plate. Desserts here are pretty large too, not to mention if it is your birthday, they bring you a little scoop of ice cream topped off with a candle and the old fashioned way of singing to you. Hopefully, you'll have a bunch of the cuter waiters meshed in. The staff are usually college kids going to Sac State/UCD and are totally courteous and cute in their pseudo farm hand attire. I've never had the experience of a rude person here the past twenty years I've been going. For the family dinner in a laid back environment resembling an old barn replete with the bison head on the wall, I'd recommend a stop here any day to fill up your insides with a good juicy slab of meat. read more

I haven't had a chance to eat at this Cattlemen's in a long time unfortunately because I live in Napa so it was a treat to stop in yesterday. Got there about 6:00 and was told it would be a 15-20 minute wait. Perfect. Justine at the hostess stand was lovely and efficient. Popped into the bar to grab a glass of wine and was texted that my table was ready. This was no more than 10 minutes! The bartender, Alexander, was prompt and funny. Once seated, we were welcomed by our server, Savannah. She was amazing. Very friendly, efficient, and just lovely. We ordered the grilled artichoke appetizer and it arrived promptly and was excellent. My usual is the steak and crab. The sirloin was cooked perfectly at medium rare and the crab was succulent. Rude and overpriced for the quality. I had a mediocre filet and lobster tail one night while working in the area. The next night got there 2 minutes after 10 and would not even let me order a night cap during their Dixon may fair. Must be a bunch of 15 dollar an hour employees that could give two shits about customer service. I would recommend buds pub 2 miles into Dixon. Angelina is a boss! Her service was on point - best we've EVER had. She had a few tables and even a large party of over 13 people but still made an effort to check on us every 3 minutes; that's what you call amazing service. Calamari is always a hit and food comes out super quick. Don't load yourself up on bread (but it's so yummy AND is always hot and fresh) because your entree comes with salad, beans and potatoes. YAASSSS. *disclaimer* This is only offered on the "bar" side, so first come first serve..and not offered in the dining room. I got my first taste of Cattlemen's my freshman year of college, and since then Cattlemen's has grown increasingly popular. There use to be no wait for these ribs, and nowadays it seems that there's always a line and a fear of ribs running out. The ribs are HUGE for the cost and really filling. I can probably get full off of two, but I have no self control so I'll shove four down my throat before calling it quits..It's THAT good. Perfectly saucy, but not too saucy, and the meat isn't dry! Thank da lordy. Their garlic fries are SOOOOO good. This pplace has to be one of the biggest points that I miss about going to school in Davis. I've had food on the dining hall side before and it's amazing. I definitely recommend this place. Stopped by here on the way to Reno/Tahoe just to avoid sitting in traffic. We ordered the ribs and lamb shank. All were pretty tasty and American-portion sized (AKA large & obesity-inducing size). All the meals came with a salad with your choice of salad dressing. The salad was SUPER fresh, especially the tomatoes. So juicy! It also came with a baked potatoes with all the fixings. I'm pretty sure that was the item that pushed me over the edge. The ribs were crispy, but meat fell off the bone quite nicely. The lamb shank was pretty good, can't complain. I would say the food here is pretty good, but probably not mouth-watering amazing. I had passed by this restaurant plenty of times on the way to Sacramento and always pictured it as a place for cowboys with a name like Cattlemen's :p Decided to look it up on Yelp and for the most part liked what I saw in pictures and reviews. I finally was able to check it out just recently. We got there around 4:30pm on a Saturday and were seated at a booth. Disappointed right away upon seeing the food specks stuck to our plates, and when I unfolded my red cloth napkin to put on my lap I noticed a white stain on it. Ewwwww! The disappointment kept coming as the salad that came with our meals was not up to Olive Garden standards :p Didn't care for the bread either. The whopper: my well-done steak was cooked medium rare! To top it all off, we decided to order their cheesecake which was not good at all. It looked and tasted more cheese than cake, nothing creamy about it at all! Plus my dessert fork had a fingerprint on it :/ The whole time I was there I was wishing I was at Tahoe Joe's instead, dusty tables and all! I satisfied my curiosity but will not be coming back here. In my college cycling team days, this is where I went to load up on the protein I burned after a 90 mile race. I wish my metabolism were still so high. This place has a 2lb (yes that is correct) porterhouse, which is the union of the NY strip and Filet Mignon. If you think about it, it's roughly about 1lb per steak. I used to be able to eat this, with a salad, sourdough bread, baked beans and then have dessert. I have since lost my superhuman eating powers and since I don't live nearby anymore I might once in a blue moon see the Cattlemens in Roseville, during a trip to or from Tahoe. Forget driving down I-5 to Coalinga! Cattlemens in Dixon offers the same great tasting all natural, Harris Ranch beef without you having to drive by and smell all the cows on your way over. Definitely a win-win situation. My boss recently treated our team out to dinner here to celebrate some work anniversaries and we all left the restaurant stuffed full of deliciousness. Since I had never been here before, I took my friends recommendation and decided to order the 12oz. western cut sizzling prime rib. Melt. in. your. mouth. The sizzling meat was so tender and came paired with the au jus gravy for dipping. I also chose the mashed potatoes as my side which were rich and creamy, and in addition, the dinner entrees came with their all-you-can-eat salad. As good as the salad is with their individual dressings for each person, I'd say to try not to fill up too much on the salad or bread cause you gotta save room for the star of the meal! The ribs are about as long as a forearm well maybe a little shorter if you don't count the bone. the ribs have improved. I remember my first experience here freshman year of Davis which was 4 years ago (damn im old) and I thought the ribs where very dry and not that good and didn't see why people liked going here. Now (4 years later) I would have to say that it has been a big improvement on their part. I recently visited Cattlemens for my birthday, and my experience was just as positive as the last time I was there. This was my 3rd time ordering the Rib Eye, medium-rare, and it was tender, juicy, and not too fatty. Every piece was easy to cut, chew, and swallow, and the crispy onion straws really elevated the flavors. As a side, I ordered the garlic fries, which were to die for. While not as hefty as the baked potato, I didn't mind because I don't really have the largest of appetites. AND if there's a birthday in the party, they'll offer you a sundae and a cowboy hat (my waitress asked if I wanted the staff to sing, and I gladly declined). We ordered the 20oz Porterhouse black and blue, but too blue for me so I sent it back to get regrilled to medium rare it was delicious and tasty but I've had a more tender porterhouse before. We ordered a 10oz filet mignon but it didn't look like your typical medallion, it was burnt and really tough and small at $30 it better be good, so I changed it a 16oz ribeye medium rare, it was the best ribeye steak. read more

C took me here for our monthiversary. It was my first time at a steakhouse, so take my opinion as you may. We came on Monday night (apparently every Monday is $1 ribs! or $2 for take-out) and it's only served in the bar area. We chose the dining area, because the bar area was packed and had a long line. After 20 minutes, we got our seats. We were served with warm sourdough bread with butter. C got a bluemoon on tap and I got a mai tai (so gross!). I was so lost when I looked at the menu. Each dish came with an unlimited order of salad and beans. But I went with the medium rare 9oz prime ribs (thanks to the Yelp photos that helped me chose). Every night they have an item on special and that night what I ordered was on special (nice!). C ordered the Hustler? (rare T-bone). It also comes with a side (mashed potato, sweet yams, twice baked potato, etc..) The prime rib was delicious! YUMMY! I couldn't finish it though, so I had it for lunch the next day. Looks delicious but had no flavor. Also, some woman who looked like a manager kept giving me a scowl. Maybe smile? Other than that our server was nice and attentive. I was really disappointed to have driven all the way out to Dixon to not be satisfied with my meal. I felt like the food was lazily made. The artichoke dip had no flavor whatsoever.. I was expecting something comparable to elephant bar artichoke dip but I literally could not taste a thing with each bite. Not to mention it was extremely oily.. I ordered a lobster tail plate with mashed potatoes. The only thing I really liked was the minimal amount of beans that me and my boyfriend had to share as a side ... But even the beans tasted like they came out of a can. The lobster had no seasoning and I could tell it was just boiled in water and placed on a plate. Came to Cattlemen's for Father's Day. Our go to meeting place since... Forever.. we are from Roseville other family from Sacramento and Suisun. Walked in and greeted right away. Seated right on time. The Service we received from "XAVIER " was the Best. I couldn't believe he remembered every little detail. Mine especially. Iced Tea, No lemon, Sweetener, Straw, extra cup of ice. None of our 7 drinks ever went empty. Brought out bread baskets as well as plenty of salad for 7 of us. The filet was perfect as well as the prime rib. My rustler ribeye cooked to perfection as well as the cowboy ribeye. Best baked potatoes, Salad was nice and cold. What made the dinner so good was our service . I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. What have I been doing?! I was introduced to this place somewhere last year and it was love at first sight. I love food, especially giant portions. To this date, I still haven't actually ordered steak here yet because every single time I get to the part of the menu with the full rack of ribs for $19.99, I can't look elsewhere. :O The hot sourdough bread is amazing with butter. :D When I order the ribs, it comes with "endless" salad (although I rarely get a second bowl because the ribs + a baked potato come shortly thereafter). We like to discuss which one of us would die the most terrible death if there were to be an earthquake while we're in the restaurant. (None of us want to get impaled by the buffalo head.) The service is consistently good, and the waitress we had here from the time we went for my birthday was especially awesome. She told us that the Sheriff could feed 2-3 people. (Cue our exchange of glances. It could probably feed one of me. Or 1.5 of me.) I've gotten pretty talented at scarfing down the entire rack of ribs every time I go. This feat apparently amazes most of the staff. NO MORE $1 ribs during football season! Currently $2 per bbq rib. I would come here many mondays last year when they had the $1 ribs. It was super worth it! However, this time, they told us the ribs have increased to $2. It's not thaaaaat bad but it definitely limited me from getting more ribs! Our group ordered 20 ribs (you can order more later). I also ordered a side of bbq sauce just because I like my ribs saucy! I ordered their fries.. small portion for $1.99 but the fries were at least crunchy. BLUF: Great, cheap steakhouse nearby UC Davis. If you are there with a buddy, go for the 'Lasso an Original Dinner for Two' which is a great deal for a full meal. Cattlemen's never seems to have too long of a wait, even during NYE dinner. When my family and I walked in, we were promptly seated and were attended to by engaging staff. My dad and I went for the Lasso an Original Dinner for Two which comes with one appetizer, two entrees, and two desserts. The dinner came with complementary bread/butter and salad starter. We started with the jumbo shrimp cocktail which consisted of six shrimps, nothing special. For the main entrée, I ordered the 9 oz prime rib (cooked rare) and my dad had a 6 oz filet mignon (medium rare). The prime rib was mediocre but the filet mignon was delicious from the half that I tried. Even if you order a 6 oz steak, the main entrée comes with a sweet potato and the whole meal is decently filling. For dessert we ordered the Pete's Pan Cookie which is a pozookie (giant chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla bean ice cream in a deep dish) and the chocolate outlaw cake. The chocolate outlaw cake is a triple chocolate diabetes attack in waiting, a layer of chocolate frosting o top of chocolate mousse, on top of chocolate cake. Get there early they get busy quick but my server Mallory was great, very friendly didn't make one mistake and the food was sooo good! Never have gotten to dessert here. Parking is plentiful, bathrooms are clean. Ambience is cowboy friendly and it's very noisy inside. I doubt there's a dress code as I've seen belly shirts, shorts and flip flops indoors. Reservations aren't required but on weekends highly recommended. Maybe if this place had servers that cared about the quality of your food, a reservation policy that let you be seated at the time you designate for your reservations (and not 60 minutes later), and Although the steak might be good (if you can get it cooked the way you order it), it is still pricey. Add that to the fact that some of the servers here are about as attentive as a three-toed sloth and this place has all the appeal of a gaudy Western from the 70's, and you have Cattlemen's. Wonderful place not only for the food!! Best service imaginable!!! Cattleman's in Dixon has superb, amazing customer service as well as superb food and drink. Changed our reservations more than once and they were so kind and happy to help. Put my daughte's cake in their fridge, sang happy Birthday and treated us like family.
