The food is good, but be careful of the wine. We went to Cava with a group of 13. Everyone ordered their own wine by just asking for an Albariño or a Tempranillo. When the bill arrived we discovered that some of wines were $40 a glass! So what should have been about a $650 bill was $920. It felt like an intentional rip-off because the server never mentioned that some glasses of wine were $40. And if you go to Spain, the home of Tempanillo, you can't find any bottles more expensive than $20, let alone a glass at $40. The owner was there and supervising everything, so I think he was responsible for spiking the bill because it was a large group. So overall, what would have been a good experience for us was tainted by a feeling of being ripped off. The following night the same group ate at Moxie as a group of 10 and the food was just as good but the bill was only $538. read more

Tried making reservation yesterday and the guy at the front desk was very rude. We were getting the time we intended to book for but he rudely (body language) told us that we can only order from preset menu option of $45 without any flexibility...3 of us are vegetarian and we always. Find vegetarian options at tapas place.. while he did not say a word about it to other two parties in front of us. It was fine. Went for a bachelorette party-- the location was cute, the ambiance was nice/trendy. A little claustrophobic. The food tasted fine. I think the most exotic thing on the menu was pork belly and I was with chicks who think fat is the devil so I was the only one who ate it (with a lottery-winning-expression of joy). There was a hummus platter and things like cheese burger sliders. There were some desserts like churros that were sort of more traditional. The women were impressed with the black salt, and the dessert that was chocolate spread on desserty bread with salt on it. Admittedly, I love traditional tapas, and also wasn't with the most adventurous group of women, so I guess we were relegated to the American favorites on small plates. If you're ever in Cambridge and want to try traditional tapas, try out Dali. I haven't had anything off that menu that isn't good- the Lomito al Cabrales, and pheasant are personal favorites. This one is worth every penny you pay. You will have a top flight experience here. 1. Service is excellent. It is clear these folks have had excellent training and clear guidance on how to work together as a team. 2. The atmosphere is warm and cozy (at least in February) without feeling crowded. 3. The food is killer. More importantly somehow the servers know just how to time delivery. You are not overwhelmed with all your plates at once nor left waiting endlessly between plates. The kale app with creme fresh is fantastic. Of course I can say that about all the other plates as well. Each succeeding plate seemed better than the one before it. Just as we remember, an excellent experience. Called for reservations and the entire downstairs was booked with a private party. So we took the seats at the "chefs table". What an experience!!!! Cava is my go-to for Portsmouth. I spend two weeks a month here on a consulting assignment for the better part of a year. There's two of us here from California and at most places, we find the food too heavy, rich, fried, and/or butter laden. Cava is the exception and therefore our go-to. Cava delivers. Upon arrival, we were seated promptly and at the chef's table, as offered when I made the reservation. Our chef, a native New Hampshirite, was talented and knowledgeable. He made great suggestions and was very understanding when I remembered to mention my allergies halfway through a dish preparation. On his recommendation, we tried an off-the-menu pasta dish that he and his sous-chef had been experimenting with. It was definitely one of the best dishes I've had in my life (and I am relatively well-travelled). Everything was good, from wine to dessert, and the bill was surprisingly reasonable (though we do eat like birds). My husband and I went to the first beer dinner they hosted. The food and beer pairing left both of us very happy. Just enough to keep us from being hungry. We decided to come back for the next three beer dinners it was so good. One of the three dinners I decided to spend the same amount on food off their menu instead of getting the pairing - I left so hungry. I only managed to order three plates. The flavors were amazing, but not enough to make a real meal. Lesson learned that both of us need to order off the menu or get the pairing so we get enough food. Love the staff. This place is simply doing everything right. The inside is intimate but still welcoming. All of the waitstaff was friendly without be overbearing. Most importantly, all of the food was simply to die for! My partner and I shared 6 different tapas including a dessert plate of cheese, honey, and these amazing little crackers. I came to Cava with a group of 6 for my mom's birthday and had such a great experience-- the service, ambiance and food were amazing! Tapas can get confusing, especially with a party of 6, so we decided to go ahead with the tasting. As far as price, for only $32 you get a 7 course tasting which is very reasonable/unheard of in comparison to NYC prices. For an additional $32 there is a wine pairing option- 4 glasses of wine for only $32!? Mind blown. The food was creative, exciting and well-executed. First up: The baby beets with pickled black berries, valdeon, hazelnuts and red wine which was delicious! Let me preface this by saying, I generally, really don't like beets however they were roasted perfectly and the combination of the flavors made them delicious! Next was the cava gazpacho& white corn soup:bursting with flavor and a light kick. My favorite of the night was: mushrooms with sage, truffle, corn over polenta- OMG- seriously, one of the best bites I've ever had. Initially, I was a little confused when I had a plate served with pieces of popcorn on it, but this was unreal. The grilled prawns were good, nothing out of this world. The pork tenderloin was perfection with the saffron coming through without being too overpowering and the chorizo-- alls I can say is, mmm mmm. The golden pineapple with lime and pomegranate molasses was the perfect palette cleanser and had us all primed for the final course. In honor of my mom's birthday, the brought out a valhrona chocolate dessert with hazelnut topped with a candle and I think I could eat this every day and be happy- it was DELICIOUS! I really wish Cava wasn't so far so that I could have this dessert whenever I wanted. Lastly came an almond torta covered in strawberry rhubarb and lemon yogurt- it was the perfect mix of sweet and tart. Yes, we ate all that food for ONLY $32. I have been a yelp user for recommendations for a couple years now, but I have yet to feel compelled enough to write a review. My dining experience last night changed that. On a road trip to Maine my boyfriend and I stayed in Portsmouth and ate at Cava. Best meal I've had in a long time. GREAT deal for the tasting menu. 8 plates for $30!! A perfect progression from light palate cleansers to heavier plates. The combinations of flavors and ingredients was clever and surprising and in every single case it was a winning dish! My bf's favorite was the steak and watermelon while I preferred the sea scallops, polenta, sweet corn and popcorn! And the wine pairing was exceptional- each wine enhanced the food exactly as it should. If you are ever driving anywhere near Portsmouth Cava is a must. It's hard to review Cava as a restaurant. It really is an experience as much as a meal. For ninety minutes on a Saturday night I felt like a judge on Iron Chef, as I savored delectable morsels of creatively prepared little plates. Many of the elements of traditional tapas are there: the Serano ham, the nuts, the octopus, and cherizo. However, they are remained in amazing combinations. I ordered the dates, Manchego, and Serano ham, thinking I would get a plate of typical finger food. Instead, the dates where stuffed with the cheese, wrapped in the ham, and roasted, so they arrived as a crispy, sweet, salty delight. Nearly all the dishes were prepared and presented with as much flair. The scallops are a must-have, though the shrimp with black beans, sausage, and home made bread didn't live up to the expectations created by the rest of the meal. Cava is not a restaurant you'll leave stuffed, nor is I one I will visit often. It is, however, a wonderful treat and an indulgence worth experiencing. read more

I first went to Cava two years ago and had what remains my favorite dinner ever. The tasting menu was creative, delicious, and alarmingly reasonable at $30/person. My then boyfriend and I split a bottle of wine, had fantastic service and enjoyed sitting among their outdoor climbing garden. Fast forward to last week on our honeymoon when I was scared to go to Cava and be disappointed if it was not as awesome. ... Not disappointed. It was a rainy evening and we were seated at a corner table by the window. Decided to pick and choose small plates this time because so much was enticing. Overall: Very good Pluses: Small plates (afternoon tapas is a great idea), intimacy, open feel, outdoor dining, good staff Minuses: Wine is a big pricey for the selections that you can get many other places including the liquor store. I've always enjoyed my experiences at Cava. Very professional, very attentive. Even if the wine is a bit more mainstream than I'd like, the staff is always upbeat and knowledgeable no matter who it is. The food is quite good. I've only had tapas, but my last outing there made we want to get back on yelp and write after almost a year, so that's saying something. First off, you must order the Rose and the Melon and Crispy Pork Bellies. TO DIE FOR. The juxtaposition of the crunch and fat of the pork with the juicy melon and white balsamic foam is truly one of the best bites I've had. The dark chocolate, pistachio and sea salt bocadillo was good, but not great. The chocolate stole the plate, which is fine, but the pistachio and salt get a bit lost. The chickpea "fries" lemon olive vinaigrette my companion really enjoyed. We also ordered the roasted medjool dates stuffed with manchego & wrapped in ham. I used to make a version of this with bacon or wild boar bacon and parm. The ham was a bit more subdued and the manchego a little less salty which I actually liked. The flavors, while robust, were a nice toned down version of what I was used to. In the past I have had other dishes such as a sun-choke plate and beef plate that were equally enticing. The kitchen is open, with counter side seating available so you can sit and watch them prepare the dishes (always a brave thing to do) but also the sign of a more artistic and confident kitchen. The location is also wonderful. I've always loved the quaintness of 'the alley" and to now have good food and wine in an outdoor setting (take that city council) in Portsmouth is a true joy. This place is a gem. Our innkeepers across town suggested we sit outside, order tapas, and drink some wine. Cava did not disappoint, even with a brief summer shower just before mealtime. We started with a bottle of Spanish wine. Considering the style and flavor of this restaurant, I had no problem spending $30 for the bottle. What's nice about Cava is they list their restaurant price alongside a market price, which allows you to survey your options based on how Cava offers particular wines. I ordered something I had never heard of, which the waitress kindly explained, and was not disappointed. When it began sprinkling, the proprietor's covered all the diners with a nice, extending shade. Once the showers subsided, it was back to the evening sky in a snap. We began with the gazpacho and white corn soup shooters, which somehow managed to remain separated with each and every shot. The flavors remained both complimentary and distinct, and eased us into two oysters. Soon after the oysters, we ordered the patatas bravas with garlic aioli and fried herbs (a personal nod to our time in Spain spent feasting on bravas regularly), which we found to be both flavorful and reinvented. Other locations like to mix a catsup/mayonnaise combination for bravas, but the aioli was a nice touch, and the herbs were a surprisingly tangible component to the dish. We enjoyed two delicious prawns (full, attached to the head), and were presented with the a show-stopper for tapas, the yellow fin tuna cruda. Nicely presented, it sat on a fresh avocado puree, and offered hints of grapefruit and, again viable components as opposed to garnishes, shavings of radish. There were four of these--somewhat of a steal for only $10. The dessert was the standout. It was some form of peach cobbler with homemade ice cream. It was light, airy, and beautifully presented. Split between my wife and I, this dessert provided only the pleasure of a complete meal--not all the weight and guilt that can come from a final course after many tapas. Stopped in on a Sunday evening after a day in the sun for a quick bite. My partner is a big fan of Cava, so I let her run with the ordering. We started with the gazpacho/corn chowder shooters. Yes - shooters. The two soups are served in a large shot glass. The perfect way to start a meal - I could have had 4 more "rounds". Next were the friend chick peas. To me, they seemed like little falafel squares. Loved the tabouli/feta combo. So light. Next was the foie gras. Despite an adventurous palette, this was my first foie experience. I'm hooked and California is stupid for banning this food of the Gods. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The portions were small, but this is tapas. The drinks stiff but flavorful. According to all reviews, the best way to experience Cava is with the Chef's Tasting. Can't wait for that. read more

Food was delicious. Loved that each course was something we had never had before. The flavors were delicious and the portions ample. I'm not a drinker but wanted a glass of wine. The waiter brought over a glass of white that was scrumptious. Dessert was churros and a pumpkin cake that was absolutely life changing. Cava is a very nice dining option in Portsmouth. I am a bit of a food snob and have the habit of thinking that if a restaurant is not in a big city or in Europe that it is not worthwhile. Well, Cava proved me wrong and I think its worthy to venture into Portsmouth for. Although I would not consider the tapas at Cava to be truly authentic, I am also a Spanish tapas snob after going to Spain on three separate occasions, they are nice, more elegant versions than what you would get in Spain. Favorites included the Sunchoke and patas bravas. The only item that disappointed was the paella because it was a bit flat and the rice did not have the proper consistency. (You should be able to spoon the paella and turn the spoon upside down without the rice dropping from the spoon) Cava is a very affordable option for the food and experience that you get. Next time I am in Portsmouth I will not hesitate to go back. read more

I've been three times, and all three there were problems: The first time we got there and they were closed for the week. OK, so we went to Black Trumpet. The second time they only had ONE waiter for the WHOLE restaurant. We sat there for 25 minutes and didn't even get a drink order placed so we left and went to Black Trumpet. The third time was during Restaurant Week last spring. Now, I have a number of eating restrictions (no red meat, nothing from the sea, no mushrooms, no goat milk) but their menu had things I could eat. OK, so we went with 2 friends, got there and it was a DIFFERENT MENU. There was NOTHING I could eat except for chickpea fries, and it was a Saturday night and everything else was booked. I wound up spending $30 to eat 2 orders of chickpea fries which weren't even that good. The waiter was so rude about it too. After that, I swore I would never go back -- three strikes and you're out. Not serving your posted menu is a cardinal sin to me. There is absolutely no excuse for it, especially for a special event that people plan to attend in advance. read more

The food was also mostly good however some tapas where nondescript and lacked character. The size of the tapas dishes where too small for the price. The paella for two was small and over salted. Stumbled upon Cava quite by accident. I wandered down Commercial Alley one morning, coffee in hand, and Gregg Sessler (chef/owner) was unlocking the door. We chatted a bit, and he let me take a peek inside. Appealed to me in every way. He recommended I sit at the chef's table (four chairs at the bar overlooking the kitchen/work area) when I did come back for a meal - so that is exactly what my wife and I did one evening last week. The experience was sublime! First off, it is a delight to watch a chef at work. Watching him run a kitchen close up, and the ability to converse with him as he's deftly plating a dish (Is that Manchego? Where do you get your Serrano ham?) is a very cool thing to be able to do. Ordered a nice glass of Albariño and opted for the tasting menu, $29 each for eight courses. Began with a thin shave of yellowfin tuna in a heirloom tomato, corn and avocado relish and truffle oil drizzle (really an amuse bouche). Loved it. Next was a white corn and gazpacho soup - amazing, and asthetically a lovely dish, too. The Bangs Island mussels were also great, but the seared day boat scallops with crisped Serrano ham were outrageously delicious (and what I thought would be the highlight) - until the star anise rubbed sirloin with chanterelles and goat cheese arrived. The patatas bravas (huge serving) with garlic aioli was a perfect accompaniment with the steak, and by the time the desserts arrived I was sated. Even thought the menu is not 'traditional' tapas (like the sort you might find in an Andalusian tavern) Chef Gregg has adapted flavors to appeal to American tastes with both creativity and aplomb. I very much looking forward to returning and trying the paella, as well as sampling a few more Iberian wines. I had two reservations prior to our family birthday dinner at Cava. 1- It was restaurant week with a set menu of small plates - I worried I may not like the choices, or that I would leave hungry. 2- We may be rushed out since it was a busy Saturday night, and service would not be so great. Quickly, Cava proved neither of these would be the case. The restaurant is small, with an open kitchen (which always proves to me that the person cooking my food is not licking his fingers while making my dinner). It was clear that every course was cooked and plated with passion and love of the food. I started with the beet and apple salad, which was crisp and full of flavor. I moved on to the flank steak, that was cooked a perfect medium rare. For my third course, I had the hake and clams in saffron broth- the flavor of the broth was so potent it made the fish and clams extra tasty. The meal ended with churros - huge portion of cinnamon donuts with chocolate sauce. The chocolate was so good, I ate two portions of it. The meal was slowly paced so we could really enjoy our bottles of wine and each course, as well as relaxing at the table. I thought it was 'middle of the road' Tapas food trying very very hard to be innovative and cutting edge.....success = Meh. Lets start out with what was good: 1.Manhattans were great, and they even gave you a little extra on the side. 2.Manchego stuffed Dates wrapped in Serrano Ham-----Tasty 3.Presentation of all the dishes were beautiful.. little pieces of colorful art balanced on the plate. 4.Staff was very pleasant. Now the bad: 1.When you spend time making a plate look pretty it better taste good too. And some of the dishes.. just failed... miserably. a.The Tuna with Watermelon---------FAIL, just plain fail. b.Garlic garlic Shrimp------ Over cooked. c.Pork loin-----Overcooked AND incredibly small, every other dish that we got had at least Four bite size pieces.. this only had TWO and for $16.... I am glad we got there early as we didn't make reservations...and there was a line when we left! Sure, the portions were small...but I was personally stuffed by the end of the meal. As far as Tapas is concerned, my expectations limit the experience. Typically Tapas is stigmatized as being expensive for its underwhelming in portion sizes and inaccessible dishes. Such stereotypes are not to be found at Cava. Yes, the meal will be expensive and the dishes are not simple regional staples but the flavors are carefully planned and ingredients top notch. The Tasting menu and individual A la Carte dishes when served 3 to 4 per person will satisfy your hunger and any taste you may hold at the time. On my visit I enjoyed an unusual cocktail: Guajillo pepper infused Tequila with Lime and my fellow diners a wine pairing which consisted of 4 generous glasses of diverse flavor and origin. The tasting menu was smaller upon its delivery than predicted but with several additional dishes was enough for the three of us to share; the Tasting consisting of 7 dishes and served for a minimum of 2 patrons. The dishes incorporated a diversity of flavors; fruits, meats, soft cheeses, mushrooms, cocoa, and vinegar balanced each dish perfectly. Standouts included the Braised short rib with cocoa and celery root, Bronzed scallops over a salty savory ham porridge, Pan roasted Brussels Sprouts with Pomegranate syrup and seeds, and the outstanding Meyer Lemon paired Roasted Banana with nut butter and pound cake. What truly stood out at Cava was the intimacy. There is a chef's table upstairs I would recommend for a date - less personal but certainly the seat for two foodies to make conversation to. The rest of the restaurant consists of two small but stocked bars, a small upstairs seating area looking out into a quaint Portsmouth alley and a downstairs set of only 4 tables. Food is served quickly but never in a rushed manner. Service is very personal and not stuffy at all and with plenty of back and forth. Ask questions, make comments, and if you have the time and money, say yes to suggestions, they won't lead you astray. Let me start by saying this little restaurant is in an amazing part of Portsmouth, in the city center but hidden in a alleyway just off the main drag. We sat at the bar, we like that, so we can smooch each other and hold hands, yeah, i know, but we love that :-) I wanted a french martini but they did not have Chambourd, however, the bartender made me an amazing cocktail sort of like the one I wanted, yummy! My man had another cocktail, which was also delicious. We shared the scallops, patatas bravas and beef sirloin, all amazing! The service here is very high end. The wait staff explain in detail every dish and the best wine pairing. The atmosphere is cool and cutting edge but friendly. This is an excellent little spot tucked away in an alley with lots of eclectic shops and bars all around. There is a nice patio out front. I must say, I've never been inside so I have no idea what it looks like within but I'm sure it's cozy. The brick wall in the front has this really cool living wall situation going on with ferns and other plants. Be aware that this is a tapas place. As such, the portions are going to be smaller than you may expect at a "non-tapas" place. If you put quantity over quality (which is absurd if you ask me) then you may want to find somewhere else. But if you appreciate creative and artistic small plates, then you'll enjoy this place! The waitress recommended that we each get 2-3 dishes, which we gladly did! Some of my favorite dishes included the ahi tuna, the dates, the beets with blue cheese, the white asparagus, and the octopus. Yeah, we got a lot of things! And for dessert, it's all about the chocolate mouse. The only reasons I didn't give this place 5 stars are that the food didn't seem to be brought out in any order, ie. I received my fish before my beet salad, and some of the dishes came out too hot to eat so we had to wait several minutes for them to cool. Had the price fixed dinner. How I can say is wow wow wow wow. Absolutely amazing. I love this place
