This was our first time at Cave Man and we were disappointed. We ordered the polish sausage meal and the pulled pork meal. They were $20 each. The pork was dried out and the polish sausage was served in sauce. Both portions were small. The sides of baked beans and coleslaw Were Not very good. Even after I questioned the order they still got it wrong. The chili was good. I am.not sure we will come back. read more

I grew up eating at the Cave Man and as an adult it's been a few years since I've eaten. I was out for a drive and as I was passing the Cave Man I decided to stop and pick up the Chicken Meal for dinner. The chicken was moist and had a nice smokey flavor. The skin was the best part! My sides were the baked beans and potato salad and both were equally as good. Every year for the past 25 years for my birthday I have BBQ ribs and try a new place out. This year was Cave Man's time and boy did they set a new bar, the lowest one. I just had the toughest ribs I have ever ate and if I wanted beef jerky, I could have gone to Costco. The sides were not very flavorful either. What is going on with this place? read more

Pork Ribs, Pork Cubes and Dragon Wheel side. The pictures can't do it justice. I understand we still in a pandemic. But the food was like from a zombie apocalypse. Cubes were stone cold & dry. Don't recommend this place. I ordered a meal, thought it be worth my $23. But, nope. I ordered the pulled pork meal, and didn't taste or look like pulled pork. The bbq sauce tasted like tomato sauce. Definitely a small portion on the sides and the meats itself. And they can definitely also work on their customer service. Wish you luck and hope you improve your service. read more

WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING? I ordered beef brisket. What I got was shaved meat that was way overcooked. When I asked them about it..."Oh, we don't have beef brisket...we only have beed round." Attended a wedding this weekend catered by Caveman. I was pretty excited since we had really liked their food years ago. What a difference times makes.... Chicken was pretty good, except for the way it was served. Not really sure why it was cut and served that way. I'm sure there's a reason. Ribs just flat out sucked. Embarrassing. Unseasoned, incorrectly prepped. They were doomed to fail. Seriously, who doesn't remove the membrane? I dug through the pan to try different portions, and it didn't matter. The ribs were very undercooked and extremely tough. Poor execution. Beans were ok. Unsure if they were from scratch. Seemed like maybe they were canned and then dressed up. Potato salad was average. Again, not sure if it was from scratch. Really disappointed. This used to be one of my favorite stops when I worked in the valley. We will not be going again. read more

Recommended by a local. Gotta say not good. Got the Alabama Slam. The pork tasted like yesterday's meat. The bread was hot but the meat was cold in places and warm in others. The sauce tasted more like ketchup then anything. Sad because I was reading the old-school wall they had with hand written notes. The girl who took my order was very polite. We were hoping to like this better. It was an ok BBQ joint. We got the chicken, sausage and beans with bread. We didn't realize we should have asked for extra bbq sauce for the chicken. It was cooked and naked. Only the sausage came with sauce mixed in. Very nice staff but just your average bbq spot. read more

We got the whole chicken, about a pound ribs, and Alabama slam. With two sides our total was around $120. My first thought was that the price was insane, but gave them the benefit of the doubt-- it's hard to find delicious, authentic bbq around here so I was hoping it would be delicious and worth it. I was unfortunately wrong... the ribs felt like they had been sitting out for a while and not fresh. They were tough, chewy, and dry. Major let down. The chicken itself was very juicy, however the meat lacked any flavor at all. Sides were nothing special. Alabama slam tasted Iike the bread had been deep fried in butter. Considering the money we paid and what we got it just seemed like a huge ripoff. We will continue our search for a good bbq restaurant. read more

Saw this place on one of the North West famous restaurants on television so thought I would try it out. Dirty, nasty, no public bathrooms and only outdoor tables in a sad little lean to type structure. I was really hungry and drove out of my way to try so I sucked it up and I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and my husband ordered the chicken sandwich. No sides included. No drinks included. $48.50! For 2 sandwiches, 2 sides and 2 sodas! Coleslaw had zero taste. Like it was just cabbage shredded up with nothing on it. The pulled pork was not pulled but sliced and tasted like it came from Costco. No smoke flavor what so ever. The BBQ sauce was like spaghetti sauce it was so full of tomatoes. 2 bites and it went in the trash. Come on folks you could do better than this. Anyone could do better than this. No more restaurant advice from the tv. Wish I had my money back. read more

I have been frequenting Cave Man Kitchen for about 20 years now. Most of the time it has been very good. Over the last few years the prices have increased which is understandable in todays economy. Well today I experienced greed at its pinnacle. I called in a "to go" order and drove to pick it up. Three entrees coming in just under $75. When I asked if I could get a side of BBQ sauce I'm told that costs extra. When I pointed out I just spent $75 the young lady all but said that's the way it is. Wow!! Once I got the food home I come to find they have changed their bread for their sandwiches. No where near as good as the buttery deliciousness of the previous bread. Ever since the family fallout of the owners the quality and service has gone into the toilet. Whichever family member is running the shop now really needs to look back at your parents vision and make some much needed changes. read more

Cave Man has excellent tasting food especially their BBQ Chicken Sandwich. However, yesterday's visit was disappointing because the sandwiches were mostly bread. The cost is a little over $14 for a large and I expected significantly more chicken than what was provided. Each end of the long sandwich didn't have any chicken. The middle portion of the sandwich contained about half as much chicken I would expect for the cost. Others in the group were disappointed too. Two of us moved chicken from one half to the other and discarded half the bread. I'll try again in 6 months and see if there is any improvement. read more

Going to Caveman Kitchen is like visiting a best friend's house that always has amazing food. It's a casual, historic part of the valley with some of the best food around. If you talk with anyone that has lived in Kent for a long time the first thing they say is "I remember going there with.... " Not only is the food great, it is a step back into the history of the area. If you get a chance, try their smoked sausages... they are life changing. And if you add just a touch of their bbq sauce on them, your life will never be the same. read more

I was first interdouced to The Caveman in Kent, WA by my UPS truck friends. I moved to Yuma, AZ five years ago. Yuma is 12 miles from Algonas, MX. Great Mexican food, the best I've ever had. Back to Rating Caveman Kitchen. 10 Stars out of 5. Like other restaurants I don't like everything that they have on the menu. My favorits: 1. The Caveman Poor Boy sandwich I order the Poor Boy right off the menu no substitutions 2. The Caveman Polish Sasuage sandwich. Note the Polish sandwich comes Hot Medium and mild. I special order it Medium/Mild to be on the lighter safe side to enjoy. 3. If hungry Tasty Sides Potato Salad and the Dragon Wheels and many more tasty choices. read more

I stopped by a couple days ago and got a pulled pork sandwich with a side (potato salad) and then I added an additional side of coleslaw. First off the sides were amazing, some of the best potato salad I've ever had. But when I got home and opened up the sandwich. I found it wasn't pulled pork it was pretty much a dried chunk of pork cut into pieces covered in a poor bbq sauce. Reminded me of eating an MRE. But I figured if I spent the money might as well eat it. But then I found three pieces of bone? (Not sure entirely but it was pretty hard). Gave up eating the sandwich and threw nearly half away. Additionally the counter people seemed like they were bothered by me stopping in, and order took way too long to get for just a sandwich when I was the only one in the shop mid afternoon. read more

Haven't been here in a LONG time. The service was great but the food wasn't exactly the way I remembered it. The "Hambetter" sandwich was just ok. The ham wasn't really tender and I thought it was very small. The baked beans tasted very good. The ribs, uggh! Very salty and the sauce was almost flavorless. I should have got them dry and used a bottles sauce. It's a small place but has a lot on the menu so probably look at it before you get there. read more

This Place is an absolute MUST! A small 'mom & Pop shop' going into their 3rd Generation of handed down family true and tried Recipes. Some call it BBQ... and since BBQ can have So-Many definitions let me posit here that Cave Man's BBQ means... all of their meat is organically raised without all the nasty stuff. Then they 'SMOKE'.... Not grill, not fry.... Their meat is all smoked and Yummmm!.... Every mouthful is filled with delightful yumminess. Today we ordered a Dinosaur Poor Boy and the bread they use is like the old-world crispy crusty outside... and the inside was filled ( more than a 1/4 pound meat in this one) with their variety of meats and served with special in-house dressing, and leafy green lettuce. ( not iceberg). Quality! Even their soda is high-end... Jones, Henry's. My honey loves their desserts and today we ordered an apple-melt...you can't buy this stuff in the store or anywhere else. One of my all-time favorites is their baked Beans, filled with chunks of smoked pork... eat this with some of their toasted crusty bread.... and you will know Heaven. They have a tossed salad and home recipe with blue cheese... the BEST DRESSING I have EVER had. I'd give these guys a 8-10 stars if I could.... They are better than good. This is flat out excellent road food. Eating on the I-5 Corridor is abysmal. This place is well worth a detour for anyone hungry and heading either south from Seattle or north to Seattle. All sorts of options, from the hardy stew, to the smoked salmon (a little on the sweet side), to Poboy sandwiches, to meat sandwiches, to salads, potato salad. You name it. I used to go to Caveman Kitchen all the time. I think under my body mass index, I was 18% polish sausage sandwich. I moved a little further away and and just stopped going because it was quite far away from my new travel routes. Recently however I dropped some family off at the airport and thought of Caveman for lunch. I got the polish sandwich and parked down the road by the old driving range and opened my lunch. Now this used to be a perfect sandwich. It cost under $10 after tax. The bread, Polish sausage and sauce (and for me the cayenne pepper) were the perfect amount for the sandwich. Not only was the lone sandwich about $15, they screwed it up. There was not enough meat or sauce to cover the bread. Seriously, I moved the sausage so I was able to have half of a good sandwich instead of a mostly dry one. That used to be a great place! Total Bummer! Greed ruined another business!! read more

Baked beans tasted like they were from yesterday. Over cooked. Pulled pork was actually pre-sliced, and probably accounted for the dryness. Coleslaw was pretty good. I'm kind of disappointed considering that each meal was 27$. Doubt I would go there again. read more

Best smoked salmon you will ever have in your life! It has always been a family favorite that everyone enjoys. I dare you to find one better in all of western Washington. This is our family's favorite bbq place, we haven't been in forever and this was the first time taking our three year old. She loved it! The bbq sauce is flavorful yet not too spicy for her. The open picnic area was perfect for her to run off her energy before our meal was ready. The staff even gave her extra bbq sauce when she ran out so that she could dip he French bread in it. read more

Have eaten here for many years and each time I am wondering why I do not come to eat at Caveman Kitchen more often. I have had catering for company and personal events and stopped by for many lunches. Staff is friendly and helpful even though it seems like controlled chaos. Glad to see they have made it through the good times and the bad. read more

UPDATE 1-17-2012: A fellow Yelper was kind enough to let me know the original family is back manning the smokers. Great! Alas, Caveman Kitchen fans, the original restaurant is truly closed. In it's place is CK's Smokehouse. I spoke with the manager and learned a few things; CK's opened just recently, Caveman Kitchens ceased operations in early June. The menu and recipes are new, as is the smoker itself. The staff is also new, with no holdovers from the Caveman Kitchen gang. I was told they took over the location but they're entirely different. That's probably a little disingenuous; CK is an abbreviation for Caveman Kitchens, and as you can see by the photo of the sign, they've co-opted the Caveman's prehistoric theme. From a business standpoint I don't blame them, Caveman Kitchen was iconic and a longstanding destination restaurant. But this is really about the food right? I remember talking with Dick Donley, the founder of the original Caveman. This was in the 70's and he had just closed the Puyallup Caveman Kitchen and I asked him what happened. The Kent location was always packed so I imagined a Puyallup location would thrive as well. He explained that he couldn't get the smoker right. The Kent smoker that he had built from scratch produced a signature flavor that he found he couldn't duplicate. Expansion plans were put away. They told me the smoker there is new, so this was the long way of explaining why the food will taste different. Not bad, just different. As with the original, there's a lot on the menu - and in this review I can speak only to the beef and chicken. Both were very good, the difference might be indistinguishable to all but us Caveman diehards who will notice the slicers are set differently and other little things that shouldn't deter you at all from giving CK a shot. So, will I go back? Longtime Caveman customers remember when there was no indoor seating, then they moved for a time across the street and provided those awful but beloved wooden picnic tables they'd dragged across the street for indoor seating. They're retro again, the storefront across the street is chained shut and the tables returned to the area across the street. And that's a long way of saying that I was willing to sit in my car and fumble with the chicken, ribs and dragon wheels for the old Caveman Kitchen flavor, but anymore I'll probably just patronize one of the many other good BBQ joints with someplace to sit. If you'd forgo indoor seating to eat a Dick's burger and fries in your car, you understand what I'm saying. Still, I wish the new CK operation all the best. Goodbye Caveman. Rest in peace Mr. Donley. PS: Someone added a review that Yelp filtered. It says that Caveman is still run by the Donley family, but has been transferred to a family member because of legal issues from unpaid wages. So disappointed with lunch here. Lunch for three $100 without drinks. We ordered two meals and one sandwich. Cubed pork with two sides, the meat was over smoked and the sauce was totally unremarkable. The sides were stoup and beans. The beans were probably the best side and you can get better beans in a can. The Stoup is their idea of soup stew but in my book, down right bad food not even worth eating, unfortunately we got two sides and a bowl of it, a mistake for sure. The pulled pork was fatty and bland. The sides slaw and the I wish I could forget stoup. The slaw was a nice texture but totally stocked pre made dressing, nothing stand out there. Our third item was the chicken bacon sandwich which was the best thing in the bag, the roll was toasty and there was plenty of chicken and bacon to make a decent sandwich. For desert we ordered a couple of bread puddings, they had a special Cave Man name but what ever they call it it isn't worth the calories. The sauce on it could have been good but it was very under cook it tasted like straight up alcohol. The bread pudding itself was just squishy bread. To top all this off the whole meal created the worst indigestion that was no better the second time around. The portions were small and the price was great for a meal I won't repeat. I will give the young man working at the counter a good word though, he was nice polite and efficient. read more

Good ole Caveman bbq, I've been coming here for years and it's been pretty consistent which is rare these days. Easy to find right off of west valley hwy and plenty of parking. Heads up though, only outdoor seating is available or you can always eat in your car. To be honest I've only had a few items on their menu, the Polish sausage sandwich, the salmon dip, and their ham bbq sandwich. I absolutely dig the Polish and salmon dip sandwiches so rarely try anything different. I have tried their sides, potato salad and stoup is something I will get mostly as well. I would recommend starting with their polish if it's your first time, it's just a really great sandwich, messy and tasty. Service is fast, you don't wait too long for your order. They offer Jones soda through a soda dispenser which I don't see often. Pricing is a little higher side but I don't mind it. Definitely a spot that I visit when I want a good bbq sandwich. read more

I was in the mood for a sandwich the other day and thought I would give Caveman a try. I got a Pulled Pork sandwich which wasn't too bad. The pork was pretty good as was the sandwich bread. The BBQ sauce was a bit bland and not very spicy. The place seems relatively popular though despite my so so experience with my sandwich. There is no seating inside the actual kitchen building but they have a nice yard filled with picnic tables where you can go relax and enjoy your food and on a hot summer day it was fun to do! read more
