We got the #7 and #2, and our food and drinks arrived surprisingly fast. The service was excellent--the woman who helped us was very kind and welcoming. The restaurant was spacious with plenty of seating, and it was clear that it's a popular spot, with a steady flow of both dine-in and takeout customers. In San Jose, Huong Lan is one of the top places to get decent, traditional Vietnamese sandwiches. This location in Newark is a lot closer when you come from SF since it is half the distant. However, the quality and service needs improvement. As soon as my family and I arrived, the cashier lady expected us to be ready to order. There were no other customers in line. I wanted to get the Vietnamese mung bean layered cake aka Bánh Da Lợn, but they only had the Pandan jello aka Thạch Rau Câu Lá Dứa. When I was ready to order, the lady just stood there standing and then said ready now (sounding somewhat annoyed)! I ordered a ham combo sandwich and an avocado smoothie for my kids. I asked if they used a lot of sugar and opted to lessen the sugar amount if possible. She did not offer the sugar percentage and just walked over to start making the avocado smoothie. Then a customer came in and she stopped to greet him, took his order, then finished our avocado smoothie. The avocado smoothie was smooth and creamy but not very enjoyable as it lacked flavor. My kids drank only a few sips and we ended up tossing almost an entire drink even after saying it was like avocado "ice-cream". It was a hot day too. The sandwich took a while to come out considering they had more than four staffs in the back (you could see the kitchen from the front register), but they still moved very slow. Some of them were just chilling and staring at the front of the store. The French bread was fresh and tasty though. They did not add much filling except for carrots and radish. Limited meat, pate sauce, and barely taste the aioli. Sandwich was still good with the classic, traditional Vietnamese sandwich taste but the one in San Jose did not skip on the quantity in ingredients like they did in this location. Our jello ended up have a mold growing so we did not try it. Texture looked solid though. We also bought the pork sausages which were tiny but tasty. Duc Huong for sure wins in all three categories for sandwiches, pork sausage, and having the Pandan layered cake I liked. Overall, this was still a decent place to get Vietnamese sandwiches. This is one of the best Vietnamese sandwiches store in this area . It has been there for over 20 years . Food are good but the interior is kind of worn out . # 1 sandwich is my favorite with combination of ham , head cheese , pate , pork roll and vegetables. They will grill the French bread and then give it to you . The Stoe opens at 8 am . Many people comes early for their breakfast and lunch before then into work . Big space for a banh mi shop, like lots of plastic table seating much like a fast-food Viet Noodle shop like Tung Kee. (Maybe it was once, not sure?). They also have pho but never tried, just looks too fast food for me. If I'm gonna do a pho outing, Imma do a joint that's known for it. But this place is more known for their banh mi, so that I do support. I'm not a reg but I have probably been in here at least 10 times, but just never reviewed it. I think it is because I basically get the same things here, and it is so basic and routine that it was kinda hard for me to draft something up. Now is the time. Cafe Sua Da (Viet Iced Coffee) ($6ish/5*) Good Viet roasty coffee flavor with condensed milk/blend. Not as intense as getting this as a drip over a cup. Here it is slightly looser in texture, maybe even in flavor but the tradeoff is you get so much more. Which I don't mind as sometimes the authentic ones are just too thick and intense. I like it more iced coffee in texture, and here it is exactly that. I hate Viet Iced coffees where after 3 sips, then you're staring at a cup of ice. Womp womp. I'm giving them props here! #16 Cha Lua and Pate Combo Banh Mi ($7ish/4.5*) I don't think I've tried any other sandwich here cuz this one just hits so hard for me. So simple and so satisfying. They use torpedo shaped French rolls here, instead of baguette segments. It is perfectly crisp on the outside yet super tender and light inside. They toast it a bit, so optimal eating is right away, but I often eat the second half much later and it is still fine. Just more next level fresh when eaten within minutes of receiving. But I think that goes for almost all banh mi. The pork loaf is sliced thicker, and I just love the bouncy texture. To me it is basically a more homemade/ethnic version of bologna or mortadella. Just not as cured which I appreciate. And to pair this with a thick layer of pate (they don't skimp) is just a combo that I cannot deviate from. And of course, those rich meats are countered beautifully with their pickled veggies and jalapeno slices. I'm craving one now just reminiscing. They are pretty quick and friendly. And I'm always amused how there is a huge lottery station here. You can play numbers on any of the Lotto games or buy tickets through a vending machine. Stopped by early Sunday morning to pick up some Banh mi's before our hike. The lady working the front was very friendly and helped us as soon as we walked in. Banh mi's came out warm and fresh! (though didn't get to enjoy it fresh as we brought it on our hike. They were still amazing) They were generous with the meat and ESPECIALLY the veggies, which I love! Enjoyed the sauce a lot too and it gave the sandwich lots of flavor. The bread was on the softer/fluffier side than flaky which I honestly prefer, as the roof of my mouth was still perfectly in tact after eating these. I HIGHLY recommend getting their avocado smoothie it's my absolute favorite. I get it all the time! The way they make it is so delicious and creamy, the flavor of avocado not overpowering but the perfect sweet blend and texture! They're now priced as much as their competitors and not less than $4 but you know what....inflation. It's definitely well stuffed with meats and filling. I love the grilled pork banh mi from here, it's one of my favorites. The bread isn't too crunchy where I'm making a mess and it's hard to eat. And it's not too soft where it tastes soggy. It's right in the middle, a slight crunch on the outside and a bit soft in the middle. The contents of the sandwich are layered with deliciously prepared meats, pickled veggies, and special mayo. The fried egg is a game changer and a must anytime a banh mi spot offers it. The Vietnamese iced coffee here is another must order. It's bold, smooth, and has that strong dark roast flavor. Keep in mind that they are cash only, I believe there is an ATM inside too, along with a scratcher and lottery ticket machine. Both seemed to still be in their flat compacted state and had too much of a chewy bite. Needed at least 2 or 3 more minutes to soften and expand. I been to San Jose Banh Mi store and at other location they would give me more Ham than this. Their Pate was not great either. I would not come back here to order banh Mi.
