When the Candy Counter used to be part of the weigh station building it was the place to go after report cards were given out at Cayucos School, at least in my family. Depending on our grades we were allowed to pick out a certain amount of candy or an ice cream as a whoohooo!! This usually only took me about half an hour... candy and ice cream available and i need to pick one - AHHHH!! Also, the owners back then were very family oriented and always treated everyone in the town like part of that family - catching up the local gossip, etc. Now that the CC has moved to a the "built up" section of the "main strip" it's gone down on my taste list. It's very sunny in that area and the candy is always near the window so sometimes it gets warm and soft. It just doesn't have the same like-a-bility that did years and years ago. read more

Great caramels at really sweet deal. You can buy per piece at 50 cents each or $4.00 per pound. The counter girls will totally figure out which way is cheaper for your purchase. Candy is pretty pricey, but I imagine its because of the touristy location. Its a cute little shop, and the staff is not too helpful, well at least not the oldy moldy behind the chocolate counter. Some things have prices, others do not so when I asked how much the giant peanut butter cup cost, she was rather miffed and responded by saying "we weigh everything" yes thanks but that wasn't the question. $22 later, I had a pretty good giant peanut butter cup, a handful of ok taffy, wonderful delicious caramel pieces and a couple of turtle chocolate caramels. Ice cream is cheap, low quality - years ago it used to be much better but they switched distributors and every summer I am reminded of my disappointment!:( Also, flavor variety they keep out is really weird and random. I'm a huge ice cream lover and yet I could only find one flavor I'd be okay with. Next, crazy over priced. $5 for a single - you can get McConnell's and other specialty ice creams for less than that. Yesterday, the kid told me my single scoop was really much smaller on my sugar cone because they can't scoop it on that cone - what in the world? My twin grandsons couldn't decide on what they wanted and Tracy was so patient explaining what the flavors would be. This place is teaming with noisy kids, none of whom are mine, and people waiting to order, and you know exactly what I'm asking for. It's not the first time I've had to endure your churlish personality for a damn cone. I get that you hate your job at the ice cream counter less than a block from the ocean, and feel you're wasting your youth dealing with vacationing families for minimum wage. You must be related to the owner because I can't imagine any small business continuing to employ such an obtuse little sourpuss. We're here at least four times a year, and there you are again. It's always been closed, but we finally caught it open at 6:30 pm. Small towns tend to roll up the streets pretty early, but ice cream after dinner is a personal favorite, so when the closed at 6, we missed them. They are right next door to one of our favorite sandwich shops in Cayucos, Duckies, so they are handy. And I am glad we finally found them open. The ice cream is very good if not anything unusual. Cute store, but TERRIBLE staff. We were there on Sunday, August 20th, 2017. Our three kids were super excited to make their selections, but unfortunately my daughter accidentally dropped a roll of Hubba Bubba bubble tape. A young women immediately came out from behind the counter and said "Seriously? What the F&*%!?!" to my daughter, who was understandably upset by this. When I confronted the employee, she denied that she was saying it to my daughter, and said she was "talking to myself". Even if that was the case, it was still very inappropriate to say that at all! We paid for our children's candy (including the dropped item) and left with a very bad impression. I called the store today, and asked to speak to the owner. (I thought they should know how their employees treat customers.) Whoever answered the phone hung up on me. Wow. I'd give this place zero stars if I could. read more

I'm a huge fan of this establishment, been a buyer since the opening and it still has yet to disappoint. Personally a fan of the mint covered chocolate sweet, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly. The variety of foods isn't as great as larger stores but I think the atmosphere, nice customer service, and selection of available stock makes up for it well enough. I got the dark sea salt caramel, the peanut butter chewy delight thing... and a small container of white chocolate/raspberry gelato. First the good.. the chocolate part was good... the gelato was good... the service at the ice cream counter was very good. However.... I don't know what these people are making their caramel out of, it LOOKS perfect....but has an odd consistency and zero flavor... it tastes like....NOTHING. And the service at the candy counter was... less than good... they need more than one careless, lackluster young man up there...especially when it's busy. While he was focused with one goal (well two - with a bathroom request as well) in mind, I let my eyes wander to the jelly beans and chocolates and spotted (GASP!) Pop Rocks! Very cute little shop with friendly service! We tried the Cayucos Special Chocolate Ice Cream and it was to die for... I'm not a very big ice cream fan unless of course it is Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia but this chocolate ice cream was amazing. Just the right amount of sweetness with some sort of nuts and chews in it and a hint of tiny little chocolate mint chips... my honey still talks about it. Best little candy counter with a world of Jelly belly's paired with delicious ice cream, chocolates, truffles oh my oh my. just visited the new location after 20 years of frequenting the old establishment. Much larger and easier to navigate although a bit hard to find as I thought it had closed down. I was very excited to see that it was still open and alive. Now the place has new owners which I met and were very nice. My GF and I enjoyed an array of chocolate truffles at the end of the day and they were pretty good. Although the Espresso one did not have espresso but only a bean on top. Very misleading. Good place, good people and lots of sweets for that sweet tooth. read more

I have been coming to the Candy Counter for many years, since they were in their old location, at the Way Station. They still have a great assortment of candies, all of the 40 flavors of jelly bellies, a good portion of sugar free candies, and now they have more prepackaged candies than they did before, but I miss some of their other bulk sugared candies that they used to have. The ice cream flavors are limited. I know they're doing the best that they can under difficult circumstances, but they're really not enforcing their "only 5 people" in the store COVID protocol. Love The Candy Counter. I drive from Morro Bay just to get a taste of their delicious Carmel and ice cream. The best part is their prices are reasonable and the workers here are so nice! I came in here right as the girls were closing and I felt bad and told them I would come back tomorrow but they were so nice and let me in and helped me get my delicious dessert. Sadly I moved to arroyo grande so it's a further drive now but I will still take the time to drive to the candy counter because it's so worth the expierence! read more

My family loves ice cream, candy shops and mom and pop stores. We should have liked this place, and for a while we did. Until, the day last summer that my daughter got an ice cream cone here that wasn't pressed into the cone at all. The ice cream scoop was just stuck on top and when she tilted it ever so slightly and took a big lick, the whole scoop tumbled off her cone onto the ground. Well, things happen. I grabbed the whole ice cream scoop in a napkin in one hand and the cone in another and we walked back to the counter to tell them of our mishap. The woman at the counter looked at us with a "what do you want me to do about it?" gaze. I explained that the scoop had been very poorly stuck on and that my daughter had barely tilted it when it slid off. Her response was that "store policy" was that once you left the store, it was your problem. So here's a little girl who is not even crying, but being very calm about the fact that you gave her a completely defective ice cream cone (you are supposed to press the scoop down into the cone. I think they teach that in Ice Cream Store Clerking 101) and her dad who is very reasonably asking if you can just put another scoop in the still un-bitten cone, showing you the ice cream which fell off, and the three people working there show no compassion or concern - because that would violate "store policy." Owners? if this is your "store policy" you are insane. Workers? does the phrase "only following orders" ring any bells? Any *alarm* bells? You could have given us the approximately 75 cents worth of ice cream or whatever your minimal cost for ice cream is and ensured a loyal customer. Instead, none of us are ever setting foot in this place again. See, I also have an "official policy." Treat us badly - we spread the word. read more

One of my kids asked them a question about the ice cream flavors and the lady mumbled something under her breath instead of answering him. Other than the crappy service, the candy selection is not great (barely more than you can get in a gas station, and their ice cream is not very good either. These people hate children, and one of the male servers has an anger management problem. He was angry about everything: the sample we asked for, the inconvenience of scooping, the flavor we ordered, the cone we chose, I could go on. My child ended up crying after being yelled at and the staff looked at us like we were zombies. Don't know why they have keep the take-out window open since they don't bother to staff it. Ice cream was okay, shake was terrible. Everything was over-priced. The gas station across the street, near Cass, has a freezer full of excellent goodies. We ended up going there everyday during the 3 weeks we were in the area rather than getting ice cream cones. read more

Underwhelming - primarily because of the employees. After checking the website for business hours (it says 9pm), I called to see if the shop sold malts. The girl who answered the phone (a little after 7pm) said, "Yes, but we're closed" and promptly hung up. Undeterred, my husband and I walked down to the shop from our house in Cayucos a few evenings later. The two girls working in the store didn't greet us but kept talking to one another. One girl made a comment about how happy she was to be closing up soon and that she hoped they wouldn't be delayed (was that a hint??). It was only 5:30pm. We tried to walk around the shop, but one of the girls was already mopping the floors around the displays; she seemed unaware that we were there. Instead, we went up to the counter to order our malts. The girl who helped us seemed inconvenienced. When we asked for the malts, she looked toward the other girl and said "I think we're out of the malt 'stuff'." She made a lackluster effort to "check" the back room and verified her statement. Clearly, she couldn't be bothered making the drinks and simply wanted close up. Leaving teenagers to run a business where customer service and friendliness would seem to be paramount is foolish. Perhaps the owner should ensure that small-town manners (and common courtesy) don't fall by the wayside in this establishment. We won't be back anytime soon. read more

The majority of the staff here is great - the woman who owns the place - meh. We have been coming here for years, and she never greets us as regular customers (oftentimes we are in several times in a week - and I have seen her treat others the same way who go in as often as we do). She acts like it is a chore to serve us, and she under serves me my scoop of ice cream, every damn time. She puts the scoop right next to the sample sizes on the counter & it is plain to see that it is NOT the size I ordered. It is smaller than the 'jr' scoop they have as an example & I always order a regular. It pisses me off. Now it has just become a game between me & my husband when she is there. Will she scoop up a 'normal' scoop? Nope! She never does. She needs to stay in the back, or turn on her charm, or let the kids do all the customer care. She isn't helping the cause here. Pro's: great selection of candies & homemade chocolates. Great ice cream. Lots of locally made confections, including the ice cream. Con: the owner, her chintzy scoops & her sour puss mug. read more

The products are good, mostly just old-fashioned, throwback candy. However, never have I ever had such terrible service. My family and I came to the store at 8:10, after reading that they close at 9:00 PM online. We then were surprised to see the CLOSED sign on the door. We knocked to ask, but were given a rude scowl by an employee cleaning the floors. She opened the door and told us that she wouldn't serve us, we told her the time we saw online and she shook her head and walked away. Utterly disappointed came to Cayucos for Presidents Day weekend and this place was closed for the second night in a row. I've been coming to Cayucos for years and love going to Cayucos Candy Counter since it opened. I love and have to get the Cayucos Candy Crunch ice cream every night for dessert. Their Facebook says it closes at 8pm on Yelp it says it closes 9pm. Each night it's been closed by 7pm. Sad because people are eating dinner next door and in town with no place to have a great ice cream or candy for dessert. But I was down at the Embarcadero having dinner and tried to call, but no answer. But the ice cream shop down on the Embarcadero was open. read more

If I could give this store a zero I would. The ice cream is extremely over priced, they leave holes in the middle of if just to make it look bigger! It barely rims the top of the cup at that and they leave holes in it, for about 5 dollars you can get a small scoop of ice cream. The employees don't care, they sit there and text or talk to each other. I only met one kind employee who was actually willing to help while I was there. The candy is on average a dollar more expensive than a usual grocery store and they have about the same variations. I got a small scoop of ice cream and a vanilla latte. Almost 5 dollars for the two. The ice cream was minuscule and the coffee tasted HORRIBLE. never coming back here again. Wouldn't suggest it to anyone. Skip the disappointment and head to a candy shop in SLO or just get something from duckies next door read more

I always stop by here for a cone of Cayucos Candy Crunch ice cream when I'm in town. It's always fun to look around at all the goodies you can get.
