I love this place and the quality of the coffee and MOST of the pastries have been consistently good for the last several years. When I visit I usually order a Breve Latte and their incredible Spinach, Tomato and Feta Croissant! I can also heartily recommend the Banana Cream Pie and Meatball Sandwich! At first glance, both tarts were indistinguishable but a bite into each highlighted the distinct flavor of each fruit. We especially appreciated that the apples retained their crispness. The crust was all the buttery goodness you expect and neither were overly sweet. This place surprised me. I expected just normal Frenchish pastries to get me through the day. But what I actually got was pastries and bread a little bit better than any thing French that I normally eat. I'm not sure what they put in their crusts but they were surprising delicious for the quiche and fruit tarts. The staff was also super nice to us even though we walked in grumpy from no caffeine and children jumping all over us. Wanted some sweet treats for dessert and grabbed the chocolate chip cookie, coconut macaroon and an iced chai. Chai was refreshing, maybe a little light on the chai spice. We came here twice during our visit to Cambria. The staff were very friendly and the French decor was welcoming. I felt so cozy that I wanted to linger. Cambria has a gem and seems everyone knows about this place. First parking sucks but if you find it come in for the lemon tart. Sharp lemon in a perfect shell $8.25. The tart was so good my friend ordered one to go after devouring the first one. We tried blueberry coffee cake (crumbly). Cinnamon roll needed more cinnamon filling. Not all Bear-claws are created equal! Before visiting THIS French Bakery I thought they were. Was it Almondy, yes. And a little dry - NO! This bakery knows how to keep it lighter and moister! And we came later in the day when most things were sold out or our group would have tried the cherry or cheese danish. Their Breve Lattes are wonderful too! We even got some prepackaged (raspberry almond tarts, could have been same day could have been day old but I will say, I have been nursing them and trying to make them last, I JUST finished the last one today, Sunday morning, we bought them on Wednesday- yep still not dry or hard. I don't know how they do what they there, but they could be stirring magic in their dough. I went to the more popular and more expensive bakery around the corner and picked up one item and I didn't even finish it. There is NO comparison! This is the sleepy and cozy kind of bakery that you hope to find when on vacation in a beach town. No frills but the staff was very nice and had plenty of a selection to choose from. Not sure what kind of coffee they brew here but the drip coffee was amazing and exactly what I needed to comb the beach with afterward on a foggy and chilled morning. I got a bear claw for my pastry and it was the perfect level of sweet and had a lovely almond flavor. I also ordered the vanilla concha because I have never seen a concha made at a French bakery before. It was amazing! Maybe one of the best concha's I have had. This place gets busy! I was actually very surprised by how busy this place got period when I walked in there was a line of about four people in front of me. The breads looked pretty good, and the pastries looked great in the case. I actually only visited this place because I had a major craving for a scone, but unfortunately they didn't have any. I did buy some Russian tea cake cookies however, and those were delicious! The Russian tea cake cookies was perfect. Light and airy, and perfectly crumbled when bite. I was excited to explore the dessert options after a long day of beach combing. The service killed the excitement. I expect service to be at minimum, polite with a smile, they couldn't even manage that. The customer area of the shop is small. Luckily, it wasn't busy. I imagine it's uncomfortable when busy. Easy to find in the middle of Cambria, the French Corner Bakery has a wide selection of pastries and baked goods. I love a rich buttery croissant, and chose a chocolate croissant, a hazlenut croissant, a palmier and a large chocolate chip cookie to accompany our picnic lunch from Soto's Market up the street. Very friendly quick service found me skipping out the door with my goodies in a matter of minutes. I have been sampling bakeries up and down the coast, and looked forward to these new treats. My husband and I split the chocolate chip cookie after lunch. Nice and sweet and chewy, not too many chips, and the finish taste was whatever leavening agent had been used (baking soda?) We went our way, driving up to the San Simeon Beach and enjoying the sunny day. When I got back home, I looked forward to the croissant with some coffee, and dug in. I have fond memories or coming here as a child to pickup treats for breakfast and now as an adult I continue the tradition of picking up fresh baked sweet and savory goodies. My two favorites are the apricot cheese danish and spinach feta croissant but they have SO MANY fantastic options to choose from!
