Wish I could say we liked this place more than we did. First there were the dinner rolls: 3 for $8. Costco makes better dinner rolls. Then there were the San Gennaro in a Blanket. These are small sausage and peppers in puffed pastry. Not worth ordering. The market salad was ordinary. Three items that were good were the burger, the pork chop and the sea bass. Lesson here go straight to the main courses and skip the rest. read more

I haven't enjoyed this strong a combo of atmosphere, service and food in a long time. The space is crowded and loud, and filled with a low ceiling energy. It's unpretentious, but still a interesting scene. Cocktails were excellent - I mean, a superb gimlet. And the dinner - which for us was swordfish and a burger - were great. Michael, the owner, swung by a couple of times to make sure all was working well. And in the end, my friend and I agreed the meal was a grand slam. read more

I was visiting friends in NYC for the weekend, and I asked them to take me to their new favorite place. Immediately they knew where they wanted to go, they said they first saw it on social media. A huge wow. What a wonderful spot that made us feel like we were in some New York movie. The burger lived up to the hype and the pork chop was off the charts. Such a lively bar scene. But what stood out most was how well we were treated. From the front door to the servers to management, the whole staff wanted to be sure we were happy. Even the owner came to say hi! What a great addition to the city. Super cool vibe without being pretentious. The sausage appetizer was delicious and unique- sausage and peppers in a hand rolled puff pastry. Steak was cooked perfectly, and quite possibly the best onion rings I have ever eaten. The staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and focused on ensuring a great experience. Having read Michael Cecchi's book, I was interested in trying his new restaurant. Bottom line: he not only talks the talk - he walks the walk. From the warm greeting upon our entry (including the hostess Christina asking us regarding our preference for our table location) to exemplary service from our server Ted (who was very knowledgeable with his wine recommendation) to a mid-meal visit from the owner, this was a terrific experience for me and my wife. As a huge fan of the former cafe loupe there were things about Cecchis that satisfied. The ambiance, service and vibe similar. Old time local bistro feel. Quite lovely! Had the deconstructed wedge salad. Very good! We had double pork chop. Excellent, huge. I had baked cauliflower which was slightly uninspired for me. Tasted good but not so exciting for me. There was a slightly sweet drizzle on it. Ordered bread, $7. It was good but did not taste like sour dough. We were in the front of the restaurant. Slightly cramped. Next time I'll make a reservation for back of the house or a banquette with 4 or 5. I will be back. read more

Honestly I thought this place was rather average ... "Hard to get a res" but half the tables were empty, the burger that was good but nothing I haven't had before (but paid with ridiculously salty fries), and an overpriced and unnotable martini. Points given for an amazing waitstaff and some of the best ribs I've had! Otherwise, save the time and money and go get the "elevated McDonald's-style burger and martinis" and pastis or au cheval. Wanted to try the restaurant that took over the classic Cafe Loup space. When I went to make a res only early or late was available - took early and put a notify on for prime. Something came up at 7 and then when we went to dine, the whole restaurant was basically empty. I assume they were trying to hold prime for VIPs but this restaurant definitely had none. I was disappointed that the quite dated concept of a pretty but charmless hostess was there to great us. She was rude and set the tone off of the night in a negative way. The crowd was very bland - more Murray Hill than West Village locals. The food was mediocre. Our waitress was fantastic. The owner was there working the room and seemed charming. These two positives weren't enough to make this evening out worth a repeat. Overall, the vibe felt very dated, nothing modern, inventive or exciting. read more

Read reviews, true, it's very loud. Read Michael Cecchi's book which I LOVED and recommend, so had to go here on NY work trip. Bartenders are very attractive! Food good, restaurant beautiful, got to meet Michael who was very charming. Worth the 2 mile walk in heels, I recommend. Tables are absolutely jam packed next to each other. They shoved three of us in a corner for a table that couldn't reasonably fit enough food for a table for two. Took ages to get a drink after sitting down. The food is terribly overpriced for what it is. This place could just about OK if it wasn't obvious that it was just trying hard to make a quick buck. Focus on quality and on creating a good experience for your guests and good things will happen. What they're doing right now is going to keep them popular for a little bit but they will quickly fade. read more

Lovely space & good food but I've seen managers and bartenders verbally abusing staff to the point that it made me and my party uncomfortable. I also watched a few female staffers visibly uncomfortable with the handsy behavior of a male bus boy. If you've ever worked in a restaurant it's not hard to pick up on toxic atmospheres. Food is good, but overall the Village bistro lacks "class." We were pushed OUT, after 2 hours, following expensif dinner w drinks & brandies. (Front desk is run by freshman girls. Managers of elegance are nowhere). The chef's book, newly published, has gone to his head. For 3-star food, you can do better. Food was decent (ordered the striped bass and the steak and fries; striped bass and white wine sauce were good however mussels in it were not great and quite dry however the steak and fries and bearnaise were very good). The service was quite disappointing especially after reading Cecchi's book (took close to 10 min for us to receive water and 5 more min for a waiter to come to our table. Overheard the table next to us say the service was "nothing special"). Price point was not worth it for me to go back unfortunately for now. Overall, nothing special, however ask for the match books though, they're cool :) read more

The food was mostly outrageous. We both had burgers, and my husband had the heirloom tomato salad as well. The drinks were fine. The service was extraordinary. The staff is obviously working very hard to manage what is very loud and very chaotic at full capacity on a Friday night during prime time. Like many a good story, this one begins with"I heard it on NPR". Actually my wife heard the interview with restauranteur Michael Cecchi-Azzolina promoting his new book, Your Table is Ready. After enjoying the interview, my wife went out and bought a copy of the book and presented it to me as a gift with the stipulation that after reading the book we should make a destination trip to Michael's new restaurant, Cecchi's and celebrate our 35th anniversary there. Plans fell into place, reservations were made and we were off to the city. When we arrived at the restaurant, who was standing outside waiting for a ride? It was the owner whom I immediately recognized. Unfortunately, the poor man was not feeling well but he still managed to carry on a nice conversation for several minutes before we entered and we ushered to our table. We had advanced that is was our anniversary celebration when reserving our table and were seated in a corner booth in the second section of the restaurant past the bar. Shortly after were we seated, Michael comes to our table with the Maitre D'hotel and talks with us some more. He seemed genuinely touched that we made his restaurant a destination trip from Vermont, apologizes again for feeling ill , and then proclaimed us "Family" If you need anything, speak up and that Maitre D'hotel will take care of us. We ordered our drinks. Our server's a lovely young lady who was an aspiring actress with an engaging personality. She said that the burger was the most popular item on the menu and we both made it our choice. The burger was perfectly cooked with the cheese just melted over the side of the burger but not touching the bottom. The sauce and fresh pickle was just right. My only criticism was the over abundance of crispy fries but my wife would disagree. We had many short conversations throughout the night with our server and it seems that much of the floor staff came over and chatted briefly as they cleared dishes, refilled waters and checked on additional requests that we may have had. Michael can be very proud of his staff in their congeniality and excellent service. Throughout our meal the two tables next to us remained empty. This likely was that they we reserved, but we would like to think that they remained open to keep a more intimate setting for our anniversary celebration - thank you, Michael. Towards the end of the meal, my wife asks the Maitre d about the murals in the restaurant. He graciously responds "Would you like a tour?" She says yes, and he gets the General Manager to give us a tour and history of the murals from front to back and how they influenced interior design. As a finishing touch, Michael had a desert of strawberry short cake sent to our table with his congratulations. It was an evening that exceeded our expectations. We will be back, five stars! read more
