We were able to eat at Cedar Agave last week. Located above the oyster bar, the restaurant has Lebanese - Mexican fusion cuisine. I'm usually not a big fan of fusion food, but they actually did a decent job at it. For us, the food was a 3.5 stars, but the nice ambience and design of the place makes it a 4 overall. The food was a little overseasoned for our taste too I think. Our favorites were probably the fresh pita bread, Papi Ghanoush, and the baclava cheesecake. Loveddddd the baklava cheesecake! Absolutely outstanding. Perfect creaminess with crunch and not too sweet. Wow factor! Also the grape leaves were incredible!!!!! An ingredient is jalepeno but honestly it was not hot at all, just wonderful flavor! The papi ganoush was fantastic and paired perfectly With the warm pita bread with a slight crunch. They could've gave two more pieces of bread for the hummus but other than that it was perfect. The Arnold Palmer was super refreshing and the far east (something like that- rose vodka cocktail) was a highlight of the evening. My husband said it was the best cocktail he's had in years! The service was good and they were friendly. Tbh it was a little too warm in there- I didn't like going to dinner in long sleeves then feeling uncomfortably hot. I was thinking dinner at such a nice venue would be chilled properly but don't wear long sleeves here. I love coming to this place. It's sexy, intimate, and thoughtfully designed. The gold chain room dividers glimmer throughout the space and somehow make everyone look like they're glowing. The bar is my favorite part. The Mayan Gold has officially become my go-to celebratory drink. The atmosphere feels warm, sultry, and perfect for a date night or a night out with friends. The seating options are also really well done. You can choose a small intimate table, a larger setup for groups, sit at the bar, or sink into the leather lounge couches. It was a little tricky to find, so I had to ask the hostess at Don Orange and she guided us to the door that says "oyster bar" above it next door and told us to walk through the long narrow hallway and up the stairs. First impression: gorgeous, romantic , dimly lit intimate space, carefully designed just for a date night experience. Samantha, our server, was professional and attentive. She refilled our still waters several times during the evening without our asking. We started with drinks and appetizers. My husband's Za'atar martini and my espresso martini were delightful. Our appetizers of hummus with chorizo, pita bread, and Lebanese florets (fried cauliflower) were delicious bites that prepared our palates to appreciate our entrees. I was a little disappointed that the 3 of their entrees (two filet mignon skewers and one lamb) came out 10 minutes before my chicken skewers. I told them to go ahead and eat while their portions were hot, but they were kind and waited for mine to arrive which meant theirs were probably cooled down quite a bit. As someone else's Yelp review reported, portions were quite small for the price. And honestly the entrees were less impressive than the appetizers in terms of taste. They boast Lebanese-Mexican fusion flavors, so I expected a lot of picante and pizazz in the flavors and the mains were just ok, except my onion cabbage side (was very garlicky which I appreciated). Insanely overpriced drinks and food. The ambiance is great. The $18 martini was unpalatable. The food was good but overpriced. A small dish of Hummus with chorizo was $14 (spoiler alert- there is no chorizo, just oil). If you want pita bread for your hummus it's an additional $5. The $18 fattoush salad was a decent size and tasty. The chicken skewers were delicious but it's 2 small 6" skewers with 3 small pieces of chicken each for $24. So overall $100 for 2 gals to share some tasty tapas and look at 2 of the worst martinis ever concocted. read more

This is a speakeasy hidden near the Redlands Oyster Cult. You take the stairs at the very back and you'll see a hidden entrance. It's extremely dark in this restaurant. Ambiance is very good for date night, but the interior is overall small and tables are next to each other, so I wouldn't recommend it for a large party. It's very sleek and dimly lit inside, and service was on point. Their drinks were delicious and food was cooked well too. Everything was pricey though, considering we are in the IE and not LA. It was delicious in taste. But honestly this was an appetizer. For $32 we thought it would be more to the meal. I ordered the fish ($36). This was actually a meal. I had enough on my plate to share the rest with my husband and be satisfied. Our waitress was really sweet and warned us to put our order of the Baklava cheesecake ($15) right then and there because they run out. It was delicious. I would come back for this. We also had the basterma Carpaccio appetizer ($18). It was good but honestly not enough to share. Overall this is a nice place to come to to have drinks and something light after you've had dinner elsewhere. I really loved the dark environment. It's good for a date but get a reservation. This place is hidden; if you see their signage on the wall inside of the building you are in the right place. You just have to take that stairway up and you will be greeted by a host upstairs. Super dim and dark. If you like this kind of a vibe then it will suit you. If not, go elsewhere. Came here on a Thursday night around 6pm. There was a couple seated in the bar area. Fairly a slow night. It seemed like my husband and I were their first dinner customers. Placed in our orders. Everything came out fairly quick as they are tapas style small shareable plates. More people were being seated and orders taken. We waited for our lamb chops and halibut. The server said he was going to go check on our orders. Some time later we were served our proteins but as soon as we took our first bite of the lamb chops they were lukewarm. Looks like they had forgotten about our food and left it out on the counter top for some time. Next our halibut came and this seared fish was super dry. Everything else was delightful though. Only wished our main entrees were hot and served on time. FYI: Their menu is primarily Lebanese food with a slight kick of Mexican spices/seasoning. My friend and I visited Cedar Agave in Redlands as our first stop to celebrate her birthday, and it did not disappoint! It definitely gives speakeasy vibes--you enter through a side doorway of another restaurant, walk down a hallway, then head up some stairs where a hostess greets you outside the entrance. Once inside, the space is dark, cozy, and full of soulful energy. It's the perfect setting for a date night or an intimate night out with friends. I ordered the Zaatar Martini, the Mexican Fattoush Salad, and the Papi Gannoush. The martini was unique but absolutely delicious--and strong! We went for Valentine's Day dinner since I'd been wanting to try this place for a while, but this experience likely won't have us returning. The fattoush salad was a fresh start, with cucumber and tomato in a lemon vinaigrette. The beet-cured salmon was good, but the portion was small--mostly slaw, avocado, and oranges with very little salmon. The crispy thousand-layer chorizo potato was nicely crisp but underseasoned; the hummus mousse paired well with it. Service timing was an issue. Each course took longer than the last--over 15 minutes for my beef and about 25 minutes for my wife's branzino--so I was nearly finished before she received her entrée. For a prix fixe menu, the delays were surprising. The service was not very attentive, though it appeared there was only one waiter covering the room , so I can't place any blame on them. The ambiance was dark and moody, and the millennial R&B playlist was excellent. Considering the $250 prix fixe price (over $300 with drinks and gratuity), I would rate this place closer to a 2 out of 5. Cedar Agave is truly a special addition to the Redland's restaurant/bar scene. It's classified as a speakeasy, and rightfully so! It's tucked away in a small upstairs corner, in between a couple of alleyways. The cozy atmosphere is warm and inviting, and whoever designed the place did a beautiful job. Of the couple times I've been here, the staff has been friendly and accommodating. The drinks are very unique and delicious, all with great presentation as well! Now the most important part--the food...we tried most of the items on the menu, and every single thing was fantastic. Not a single dish was lacking in flavor or presentation. So my friends, fiance, and I came here for drinks and I must say, made for a fun time without being overly obnoxious. They have a nice unique assortment of drinks but if you want to start the night off right, get a habibi shot. It doesn't taste too strongly of alcohol and the hibiscus in it gives a nice flavor profile. All other drinks after that are fair game. Had a wonderful experience here. From the decor, intimate lighting and seating, to our waiter. It's clear the atmosphere is well thought out. The lights on the tables have different temperatures and brightness settings, the light fixtures on the ceiling were beautiful to look at, as well as the lights and decor on the stairs on your way up! Even the bar had beautifully placed bottles. The seats were velvet and very comfy. Absolutely a 5/5 on ambiance. I also like how much this feels like a speakeasy. There's no sign whatsoever from outside, you have to enter through the oyster bar door which takes you down a long hallway before you turn right and reach the stairs and that's where you can find a sign with the restaurant's name. It makes you feel cool and exclusive getting to this place. Our waiter also spoke Spanish which was a plus because my boyfriend's mom doesn't know much English and since the menu is in English I appreciate that he was able to explain everything to her and hopefully made her feel more comfortable. All the food that came out was amazing. Only reason I knocked off 1 star was because of how pricey it is. Because it's all tapas/mezze style, each dish is already the price of one normal dish (or more), but the dishes only feed 1-2 people. There were 6 of us, so we almost ordered everything on the menu. So the good thing is we got to try a lot of different things, but the bad thing is how high we were racking up our bill because of it. I do think I prefer this as a date night with just me and my boyfriend to not have quite as high of a bill and to be able to get to share more of a dish, but I am still glad we went as a family to be able to try all the things we wouldn't have ordered with it just being 2 people. My top dishes were the cauliflower Lebanese Florets, Batata Harra, Falafel Pockets, and Muhammara Rojo dip. This is an elegant speakeasy type location. We loved the ambiance. We made reservations the morning of and only 7pm was available. They let us dine earlier. They even allowed us to switch to a corner table where we could sit closer together. It's a small bar located upstairs right beside Don Orange. It was a little difficult to locate at first. Place can only host 40-45 ppl or so and only half of the tables were full. It's not a place to get super full stomach. It's more of a bar with smaller appetizers that are best shared with just 2 ppl. We loved the flavors and combinations of the food. They're pricey but I feel like it's worth it especially for date night or a special occasion. I'm sure the place is lovely if your aim is to settle into cozy (read dark) atmosphere and drink an evening away. We don't drink. The chef's choice menu on offer is spectacularly overpriced. $70 per person and the portion served for two people is really meant for one! It was even plated that way! Classic plating of skewers on potatos gratin on one plate - as for one person. This was not a portion to share - not in quantity or presentation. The seasoning of everything was exceptional, but that's the only compliment I can give it. The filet mignon was overdone. The service was glacially paced, but again, we're supposed to be settled into a dim room drinking cocktails, which had better be EXQUISITE to justify this place. I have celiac, but my friends all had the cheesecake and said it was the best they've ever had! The only downside was it was super hot! Cedar Agave: This was my wife's and I first time and we were celebrating our one year wedding anniversary. They knew this. Host: Taylor As we waited in the waiting area on the only two seats, since we arrived for our reservation 15 minutes early; We noticed three groups of guests walk in and they all asked for seating at the Bar as walk-ins without reservations. First group of 4 was turned down as they had no reservation and the hostess Taylor stated they didn't have seating available. Second group of two women were turned down for the same. The last was a couple of two. The hostess changed her answer to "we might have room, Let me see what's available" instead of flat out turning them down the same as the prior. No one walked out, so the seating availability had not changed and after walking in to be seated, there were seats available at the bar. 4 to be exact. This was a span of 15 minutes. Whether this was intentional or not, they SEEM to have a preference on who they will let in for walk-ins. So have a reservation, for a better seating experience. Waiter/server: Daniel Service was good, but could be elevated tremendously. We're non drinkers and we quickly realized they cater more towards a drinking table. Although Daniel was kind, he lacked using his knowledge of the menu to give us a better experience, especially for our anniversary. No congratulations was given until the end of our dining. As they gave us our check. They said, "we normally give a free shot for events and anniversaries, since you don't drink, congrats" Which is fine, we would have enjoyed the congrats at the beginning instead of, "oh damn, forgot to say it, they don't drink so just tell them awkwardly at the end as we give them the check" In my opinion, after seeing the menu, they serve mocktails. He didn't even suggest a mocktail for non alcoholic drinkers. So that was a miss for us. He also did not explain anything on the menu like he did with the larger party next to us and arrived after us. He explained what each item was, how it was served. We learned more about the menu from listening to him say it to the other table. Though, we had already ordered at this point. Overall hospitality was a miss. Menu knowledge is biased based on who they feel like giving it to IMO. They don't cater to Vegans much, although it seems like they have options on their menu, they were out of some of the vegan items we wanted. Food: - Filet Mignon Skewers (Gluten Free) 42$ Cooked to their preference, this was a delicious dish. The flavors were profound and complement eachother well. - Portobello Skewers (Vegan) 16$ No joke, you can make this at home after a trip to sprouts and you'll get more for your buck. However it's always still nice to be served. It was also seasoned and flavored well. Very delicious, but not worth the portion. - Batata Harra (Vegan, Gluten Free) 12$ This was the best item we ordered. We should have gotten only this and ordered multiple servings as this was so delicious. The savory and saltiness was perfectly matched. - Papi Ghanoush (Vegan, Gluten Free) 14$ This takes number 2 on our favorite. It was very flavorful and fresh. The Pita bread was perfect in texture and taste. This was worth it being the appetizer - BakLava cheesecake (Vegetarian) 15$ Baked by the Owners mother. (According to the waiter Daniel, after he told the other party this information. We only over heard it since we didn't get the same hospitality as the other parties. Unsure why. This was a good cheesecake, but comparable to any other cheesecake. Served a-little warm when I got it. Truthfully, jack in the box's New York style cheesecake can satisfy your sweet tooth and at a quarter of the price. However it being homemade does entice you to try it. Just go in with normal hopes. - Oaxacan Chocolate Crème (Vegan) 15$ They were out of the only Vegan Dessert my wife could try. They show vegan options but we're lacking in those areas. They seem to cater more to the drinking aspect they provide. Noise Level: Very low and intimate. Great for a couple to spend time together and talk to eachother without needing to raise your voice. The Ambiance was beautiful and calm. Everything was aesthetically pleasing visually. Very photo worthy place. Overall: This place gives you more of a Speakeasy vibe. Very small and intimate. The service is lacking and could undergo some empathy and hospitality training. The food was delicious. However the service wasn't good enough to look past to try again. Especially flopping on a couples first wedding Anniversary. There are rules of a dress code however we noticed many with sneakers, anime cartoon shirts, sportswear, shorts, etc that they say would not meet dress code. I give this a 3 Star, for the food being good. They have a solid team in the back of house. The Front of house needs work for their "seem less dining experience" to be viable. read more
