Mediterranean and Indian is a strange combination, but Cedars makes it work. I ordered the lamb palak masala. The earthy spices played well with the lamb to eliminate all gaminess, but the spinach took too strongly to them. The dish was wonderfully filling, and while the spinach did taste a bit like mud, it was the tastiest mud I've ever had. In any case, the lamb certainly made up for it. Our server was very kind, and the space is nice (if quite cramped). If you're a student in the area and need a place to go to show off to your parents how mature you're getting, this is a great option. read more

I am NOT a fan of Indian food. I've tried Indian food for the first time a few years ago. It was at the Taste of India in U-district. I went with someone who loves Indian food, but as usual, I thought I was the one who could choose the best entrees on the menu. WRONG! I chose some kind of fish dish. It was gross. My dinner mate also hated it...the only saving grace that night (for me) was the Naan. Needless to say, my first Indian food experience was not a success. Fast forward 2 years later... I gave Indian food a second try....this time to Cedars. I hear good things about this place so I figured it would be a good restaurant to help me form a second opinion. We ordered Naan (of course)...and it was HUGE! They were hanging off the plate it was served on. Yum! For my entree I chose Tandoori Chicken Tikka. I didn't mind the taste of the chicken, but the pieces of chicken I was served were disgusting. Fatty and grissly....bleh! But the Basmati Rice and Veggies were ok. My cousin ordered the Tikka Masala, I didn't try it but it looked good and he said it was good. Sadly once again, the bread was the best part of my meal. What am I doing wrong? Hands down, the best Indian fare in the Seattle area. This would easily compete in the Little India/Cerritos, CA area (sorry, my main frame of reference). The flavors are keep and rich, and you aren't short changed on the helpings. I go all sinful by ordering tikka masala with BEEF, and I enjoy it (more than I should, really). The other half likes the mango curry with lamb, and between the two of us, we always split a garlic naan (because honestly, if you can finish one by yourself, you ain't human). 3.5 Upon entering the first thing noticed is how dim the place is. If you happen to have an unfortunate outbreak and are craving Indian food in the Ave area, this is the place for you. Butter chicken, tandoori chicken tikka, and garlic naan. The total was around $33 and satisfying for three people to share. Butter chicken was tasty! But, it is sweet, not as creamy and buttery as the chicken butter masala at Taste of India. To compare, Cedars has the sweet tang, like BBQ sauce, while Taste has this very warming, rich, buttery, not so sweet taste. Chicken tikka was noticeably dry. Not bad when drenched in the butter chicken; still flavorful in a citrus and spice kind of way, but too tough to tear apart. As for the garlic naan, while it was very large, it was also quite thin and crispy, unlike the thicker, softer naan I am more accustomed to having. Still, not bad. The portion size at Cedars is a bit smaller, too, though the price range is similar, if not a little more expensive. The server we had couldn't communicate with us, and never checked up on our glasses so accordingly manage your water intake. Above other average Indian restaurants, but I'll go elsewhere. read more

One of my favorite places to order takeout! This place is a staple for any student or visitor to the area, very well known for their food. At times it can be a hit or a miss, depending on when and what you order, hence the loss of one star. But I come here as much as I can, and did when I lived here, and was always satisfied. The amount of basmati rice they give you is insane, definitely way more than one person could possibly consume in one sitting. Sometimes a four star spicy rating doesn't hit my spice meter, and sometimes it's right on point. I prefer eating my curry with the rice but if you don't, their naan is HUGE, definitely able to share with more than two or three people. I can always stretch a meal from Cedar's for a few days. Their samosas are wonderful too. It might seem to be on the pricey side but if you can't finish it in one sitting you can have leftovers for at least one day! read more

Amazing place! It was so empty when we came but it deserves so many more customers. Our server was so attentive and sweet throughout the whole meal. We were so thoroughly impressed by the food. Thank goodness my first Indian restaurant was fantastic. First I liked the service. I don't mind the waitress's scary face because she always brought us water and chai even if the cups were half full. And the chai. I love their chai and loved that they kept filling it up! Now I drank too much but it was so good I thought to drink it all because the waitress kept filling it up. And then after each time the cup gets halfway she keeps filling so I could never finish it. This was a never ending circle of good chai and it was heaven to me. I don't know much about Indian food but I had butter chicken and it was so smooth and creamy and you could choose the hotness so I have no complaints. This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants to visit! The workers are so friendly and attentive, and the food is amazing! I always order a lamb tikka masala and a mango lassi drink. The butter lamb tikka masala is so rich and creamy, while the drink is not overly sweet. There's parking for customers over at Safeway so this is definitely a place to visit since most restaurants in Seattle don't even offer free parking or make you look and pay for street parking, or parking lots, which can be a pain sometimes! read more

I have scoured various restaurants everywhere to get that same flavor and taste but nowhere else compares to Cedars. I can't speak much about other dishes. Oh I also always get the garlic naan. Portion sizes are pretty large! I always come out with leftovers. The place hasn't changed much in terms of decor. The service is okay. Great restaurant! We got the garlic naan to share and the sauces were really good and the naan was huge! I got the falafel plate and my partner got the mango curry with chicken. Both were really great, and there was a lot of chicken in the curry. We even had leftovers! The employees were really kind and kept a distance from the table when taking orders. Went in around 5pm, loved that it was not crowded and I was seated almost immediately. The downside was that the hostess nor the waitress ever smiled or greeted my family welcomingly. As soon as my family sat down, there was a strange looking bug on the table. Quickly my sister spotted it and my dad already removed it.(before I got to take a picture of it.) Obviously, better cleaning is needed here. Ordered garlic and spinach naan, butter chicken, mango beef curry, and the beef shish kabob. The naans were great as always. Also, great price considering how big it is. The garlic naan is my favorite and its only 2.75! I highly recommend getting the butter chicken with it. Pairs really well together. Came here last night with a group of friends before we headed to a play. I had been craving Cedars and excited to have garlic naan and roghan josh with lamb. The naan wasn't very garlicky and the roghan josh was aiight. I ordered chai and it was lacking ginger. Overall, I was full and adequately happy but it made me wonder a few things: A. When I remember all of the times I ate at Cedars, it was always really good. I could never finish my own meal and the naan was so garlicky that I'd have to brush my teeth for a two days before it completely left my breath. Was the deliciousness of this place because I was young and didn't know any better? OR B. Cedars isn't what it used to be and the quality has gone down since I first ate here in 2006... Either way, it was disappointing but still decent. Not sure I would choose to eat here again since there are other places that have good Indian food. It makes me wish that this wasn't the case but really wasn't impressed with the overall quality of the food and left me feeling "meh." Cedars has the best Lebanese food that I have tried so far...in Seattle. I still can't give it 5 stars because I'm from the Midwest and I am used to some darn good Lebanese food. It's my favorite kind of food!! But Cedars does a good job at getting the flavors right and keeping portions and prices reasonable. I've tried the started sampler platter with hummus, baba, falafel, and pita. Everything on this platter was delicious and very close to some of the best that I have had. I also split the tandoori combo platter that came with various grilled meats, chicken, and seafood along with vegetables and rice. I would have liked a few more vegetables, they were delicious, but there was plenty of meat to split between the two of us, along with the appetizer. The meats were well seasoned but a little dry, particularly the fish. This is really my only complaint though. Their Indian food I saw brought to tables looked really good, as did their naan. Next time I might be inclined to try that side of the menu. But a very reliable option for those craving the flavors from the Middleeast. read more

Best Indian restaurant in Seattle! All of the food I have tried has been super flavorful and the staff is really friendly as well!

Just went there last Saturday with a few friends for dinner. It was crowded at the door, the host quickly took our name and says the wait would be around 20 mins. I think it was a bit less than that. We got seated by the window which was pretty nice. They have a long menu with all kinds of Indian curry. I'm not sure what other says but the "mango curry" looks appealing. They even give you a choice to pair with veggies, chicken, beef...etc; and it comes in 4 levels of spicyness. I took the mango curry with veggie and medium hot, and also ordered a drink called "mango lassi." It was basically some yogurt and milk blended with mango and rosewater. I couldn't taste the rose flavor and the drink was indeed not cold enough. All of the servers in the restaurant were busy and kept running back and forth. It took a while for us to order, but the food came pretty quickly. My order tastes pretty good but was a bit spicy, I can usually take spicy food but I don't think I can handle if it were even more spicier. We also ordered one naan bread which was good for 4-5 people if serve along with the meal. It's good with the leftover curry so I will recommend this. I love the food there and I will definitely come back hopefully anytime soon. read more

On those hot Seattle days, Cedars has to have the women's bathroom window and door propped open to let the air flow through. Yes, it can be awkward when passengers of vehicles and 50th Ave walkers can see you about to do your business but I doubt that an air conditioner will be purchased anytime soon. It's the U-District; it's okay to lower your standards. I went during lunch and was seated near the window. I got to watch an old man in the Safeway parking lot point at random people as if he was casting a spell on them. I'm glad the restaurant wasn't busy. I know dinner time is quite the opposite. I ordered the Shish Taouk. It was flavorful. It was a good experience and I'll probably be back. If I go during dinner I'll call to make a reservation. read more

As I eat my leftovers from last night at Cedars, I wanted to reflect on a great dining experience. We ordered the usual butter chicken (I always order this; it's my absolute fave), tikka masala (2nd fave), rogan josh (or something like that) and the Tandoori Surprise. The Surprise wasn't all that great but the portion was quite generous. There were different meats in it; chicken, beef, some kind of sausage... and I don't know. Perhaps mystery meat? It was OK but the other curries and garlic naan definitely made up for it. The service was quick too because it was pretty empty on a Monday evening but I still love Cedars. read more

I have been to Cedars twice now and have been happy with both experiences. The staff is friendly and very conscientious of refilling water glasses (though not to the extent of Taste of India). The atmosphere is very nice; I like that I feel like I am eating in a home. I liked the decor and the music! I would recommend the Palak Paneer especially--it is much better here than at Jewel of India. The mango chicken and chicken tikka masala are like many other restaurants I have been to. I especially like the garlic naan (the portion is very generous for the price: $2.50). The only thing is that the prices are a bit inflated for the size of the portions. For example, I had the tandoori prawns, which cost more that 15 dollars, but only included six prawns! The mango chicken was around 13 dollars and the palak around 11. They both came in small dishes around four inches in diameter. The important thing, though, was that the flavors were all spot-on! :) read more

This restaurant has a great location. I really wanted to love this place. I've been here three times and each time I've been more disappointed. Problem #1 The service is just OK. It gets worse the busier the place gets. Problem #2 The food is barely just OK. Maybe the meat dishes are good, but I haven't tried them. I have tried both Mediterranean and Indian dishes = Salty and bland and not correctly spicy or flavorful. The okra dish we had most recently was just terrible. I should have sent it back. Maybe I'm just spoiled cause I compare all Indian food to the food from Devon Avenue in Chicago... this place is definitely Amercanized Indian food..... safe for someone afraid of eating Indian or Middle Eastern food. read more

The last time I was here though they forgot the naan, and we had to remind them after we were done eating (I think we mentioned it twice too). Came here last night with some friends. Had a good experience. Even though half our party was about half an hour late (ridiculous Seattle traffic), they still accomodated us very well. We shared some yummy vegetable nan and each ordered a dish. My butter chicken was to die for. Although (people with more knowledge of Indian cuisine can correct me) it seems very similar to chicken tikka masala, no? Even the waiter called it chicken tikka masala when brought it out, to much confusion. We had one instance of each good and bad service. The good was that the waiter provided a small dessert when he saw that my friend was having trouble handling the spiciness of her dish. The bad was that another friend ordered a chai tea, had to ask for it because they forgot to bring it out, and then they tried to charge us for 2 chais. I am still sitting here in post-meal bliss, perfectly content and VERY full. I've been on the biggest Indian food kick in the last few days, so after conducting comprehensive research on U District Indian restaurants, I decided on Cedars, since it had the best reviews. And boy, I am SO glad that I did. I called in for a take out order of Garlic Naan and 5-star Chicken Madras Chili Marsala and it was ready in about 15 minutes. My Garlic Naan was only 2.50 and it was HUGE. Probably at least twice the size of Naan from other establishments that I've had. The garlic flavor was perfectly potent, and I swear I could live on that stuff forever. The 5-star Chicken Madras Chili Marsala was also mind-blowingly delicious. Keep in mind, I am a spice enthusiast, and the 5-stars here were absolutely spot-on. Definitely had a kick with generous pieces of chicken and more than enough sauce to dip your yummy Naan! Oh, and I can't say enough about the portions. THEY ARE HUGE. I'm really not exaggerating when I say that 99% of the time, I eat everything that's on my plate. But when I opened my take out bag, I knew that this time it wasn't going to happen. You know how most restaurants give you one small scoop of rice to go with your dish? Cedars gave me an ENTIRE take-out full of just basmati rice goodness. Needless to say, half of my meal is waiting for me in the fridge tomorrow, and I cannot wait to have leftovers tomorrow! read more
