I've been a member for a while but that was back when they were Valley Credit union. They updated the inside and it looks nice. Now the ATM is located in the front of the building, the same but much older and I hate it, and I avoid dealing with it because it is hard to see, plus just nasty. I recently moved my accounts due to annoying customer service. They have on line banking but you aren't always near a computer. Times to wait can be long but when they do get on the phone it has been a few nasty people that either are sick of there jobs or have had too much caffeine. When dealing with MY money I'd rather just be about that, it can be frustrating and time consuming as well. Deuces! read more

Valley Credit Union was awesome. CEFCU- not so much! Hopefully they are still working on their customer service. To date it is still frustrating and slow. We have been looking at other credit unions to take our business somewhere it's appreciated. That is NOT CEFCU! I have to respectfully disagree with Heather O's assessment of everything being fixed so to speak. I am glad that her experience has become a positive one and I hope she continues to have a good experience with her bank. After VCU merged with CEFCU the nightmare has started. They have hijacked my account without notifying me, i was scared what happened to my account. No online account support, no daytime call support, and worst of all they are not open in weekends for support. Recently i moved amount from my money market to checkin because i needed it. They charged me $15 for not having suffiient funds, and then sent letter after 2 weeks saying they charged me. I have talked to cehcking account lauri, who is so dumb that this is how CEFCU is, VCU was differeent. And we work this way. I have very low confidence in these CEFCU guys. I have been member of VCU for more than 10 years now, and i never felt insecure of the bank. CEFCU does not deserve a single star also. I feel I like I have to give CEFCU at least three stars - I'm the dummy who stayed with them through the Valley Credit Union transition - wow, that was a nightmare! Since then, no problems. With that said, I'm the easiest bank customer in the universe - just need a place to keep my money, not much else. I go to the San Jose branch only on rare occasions. I'm giving a single star as I truly feel one ought to avoid this organization for the time being until they have reengineered their business systems. The people are friendly and they care about doing a great job; however, after being a customer and seeing first hand I realize that it is the actual business systems that have failed. My problems began as soon as I started my account. I had specifically asked to have an ATM card and not a Visa Debit card (I thought they were basically the same but was told of the differences by the individual setting up my account). The individual helping to setup my account crossed out my request and told me that I needed the Debit Card and not the ATM card (as I had checked off of their own sheet). I stated my reasons (don't know why I had to explain myself) and she then circled my original intent. Next was that a great deal of the paperwork given to me had the wrong address on it. This paperwork had to be filled out by my employer and mailed back. So you can imagine my shock as these documents started coming back to me in the mail. Driving back into my local branch I was told that the address I was trying to use had been closed for years (I failed my mind reading class at college). I politely pointed out that their paperwork instructed that I use the now defunct address. These two items prompted me to call the head office to find out what was going on. I was lucky as I was able to engineer my way up to the top. It was during this conversation that I came to the conclusion that the system and really not the people are the weak link. I really think that the management team in place has begun biz systems that need to be reviewed from the ground up. But I digress. Now like most of the people that are visiting yelp, you probably like to do most of your work/business/life over the computer. I setup my online access and within a short time later they completely changed the protocols. Well that would be fine, but I use a product to remember my passwords for me (roboform) and to prevent a key logger from stealing my information. You guessed it, the new system in incompatible with this security tool that I use. Also, the new system just feels like a 'me too' interface to Bank of America's, which I didn't like as well. I really hope that this organize takes the effort and reevaluates its business systems from the ground up. This will probably take a fresh management team or a complete commitment to quality service to get this fresh perspective. I hope that they do as I generally like credit unions and would like to have had a better experience with this one. read more

THE STAFF AT THIS BRANCH ARE GREAT. THIS IS A REVIEW OF CEFCU OVERALL, not of the kindness and excellent services at this specific branch. Seriously, anything they can do in the branch is fine. Anything that goes to their main service department is a disaster. When CEFCU took over Valley Credit Union, they deleted everyone's records. It is true that they sent a letter in the mail about it. How many of us actually open our bank statements, now that we can see everything online? I admit it, I didn't open it until it was too late. However, I had frequently checked my balances online and made online bill payments. They did NOT put a notice on their web site after logon that you should download your records ASAP. They've changed the format of their account numbers more than once. This is a pain when it comes to direct deposit and all kinds of ACH/EFT transfers. And, more than once, I've entered the routing number and account number correctly (copied right off the web page) and they've flagged it as incorrect and gigged me for $10. This is difficult to fix because for security purposes, organizations like Venmo won't let you see the numbers you entered after you saved them so I can't prove that entered it correctly. The first time I ordered checks after the takeover, the printer called CEFCU to confirm the numbers. CEFCU demanded that they change the numbers to be "correct." So, I told the printer to go ahead and print them the way that CEFCU said. Then CEFCU charged me additional $10 per check because CEFCU GAVE THEM THE WRONG INFORMATION. They took back all the charges because it was their fault but that's just bonkers. And it was really hard on my poor yard guy, who is unbanked and cashes checks at a liquor store, since they gigged him for a huge amount which I was compelled to pay because I don't want him to suffer for CEFCU's stupidity and CEFCU would only cover the charges to me. Honestly, I need to find another credit union. The stupid mistakes they make keep piling up. It's lazy and sloppy of me to stay there, but my kids have their accounts there so it's super-easy to transfer funds to their accounts, and all my bills are set up, and I just don't want to go through everything again from scratch. But obviously, I should. And I will. Again, LINCOLN BRANCH STAFF IS AWESOME. CEFCU central is a clown show disaster. read more

I have spent many years in the auto industry. I've financed dozens of cars, had multiple gripes and mishaps and all kinds of stuff be promised and never delivered. I must say that after 2 years of doing business with CEFCU and Erica Tan in particular that I am blown away. She is very responsive, professional and puts up with my constant need to ask questions. I changed my mind like 200x during every transaction, loan and what not. She is by far the best Bank Rep i've come across. From my personal loan, to my auto loan to my boat loan she is the best of the best. If you can deal with anyone at CEFCU ask for Erica she is the best. read more

I've been a CEFCU customer for the better part of a decade, back to when it was a Valley CU. I'd like to say a few things about the best part of this credit union, which is the customer service from an unusually smart, funny, friendly and professional group of tellers. When my favorite dude, Paul, was moved up and out of the front, I was sad for a minute, but Carmen and Laura (and at least five other awesome people whose names escape me) filled the void nicely. This is a place where the folks make an effort to know you, have mastered brisk but personal conversations that make transactions cool without slowing down the line, and it isn't just one or two exceptional folks- there's obviously something about the culture and hiring practices that delivers a totally friendly and upbeat experience. I'm at the bank once or twice a week, and even though I don't live anywhere near CEFCU, I've never considered switching. I genuinely appreciate their accomplishments in the lost art of immersive customer service. read more

Went to the ATM machine at 9:30pm tonight to withdraw 20$ from my account and the ATM NEVER gave me my money. all it said was processing for about 20 seconds and told me to remove my card didn't even give me my receipt. I thought maybe the machine didn't read my card? So I tried again and same thing no money but it did give me a receipt.. I thought to myself that's odd... so I tried the next ATM to the right and this time when I requested to withdraw my money it told me I had insufficient funds. Which I knew was not true since the first machine never gave me my cash. So I went on to my online banking and sure enough it said it withdrew the 20$ out of my account which I never received.. I will be going to the branch tomorrow and to talk to them since I pretty much never got my money that the machine claims it gave me. But They really need new ATM machines.... read more

If I could give this company a 0 star, I would base off of its customer service alone. However, as it stands and because I did get a quick and satisfactorily assistance on my account from one of the collections managers, Troy, I am willing to give this company at least a star. When I first signed for the auto loan from this bank, I opted to pay my account online as that is much more convenient for me (and it's a plus that I'm helping to save loads of papers). The first few months of payments was fine until CEFCU decided to introduce this "middle step" of a CEFCU savings account, which I would need to transfer my car payment from my bank account to this "savings" account, wait a day and then transfer from this "savings" account to the actual car payment. I wasn't aware that I had to transfer manually the next day, thus I was nabbed with delinquent payments for two months. I then decided to just authorize an ACH withdrawal, so I would not have to deal with any of these headaches. I was told that I would not be able to do an ACH until I brought my account up to date, which I had proceeded to do along with instructing the person who was processing the ACH request to change my due date from the 10th of every month to the 22nd. Months later and I get these letters from CEFCU saying that I am now delinquent of $400+ plus almost $67 in late fees! Now, one with even a small midge of brain cells would be able to connect the dots and think - now, how was it that I became delinquent with ACH withdrawals per month? I asked myself the same exact question. I then proceeded to call CEFCU collections center regarding this very confusing issue and was basically given the run around about my supposedly delinquent account. The first person to "help" me (if you can even call it that), Lindsey, mentioned that I never called to change my due date from the 10th to the 22nd, thus my account has been accruing these late payments because I've technically paid past my "due date" the past couple of months. How was that possible when I scheduled my ACH withdrawals on the 22nd? Who would be stupid enough to do that if my payments were really due the 10th? She then told me that I had an outstanding balance of $21.98, which again I questioned as how was I able to set up an ACH withdrawal with CEFCU if I hadn't been "up-to-date" as they had stated? And I would have appreciated a letter way earlier in the stage of doing the ACH withdrawal that I had an unpaid balance. Had I known, I would have paid it off without accruing these damnable late charges from the bank. Lindsey then proceeded to put me on hold and then hung up on me. I called again, unfortunately, and got a hold of the most incompetent agent I've ever had the misfortune to speak do. Unfortunately, I didn't really catch her name, but this very rude and incompetent person proceeded to tell me that I missed a payment even though I insisted (based off of the statements from my bank account) that all the months have been accounted for. She then told me to call my bank and get copies of the "checks" sent from my bank to CEFCU. At the moment, I was so shocked by her incompetency and ignorance as I was well aware that each and every payment made by me to CEFCU was either through online payments or automatic withdrawals from my bank account, which do not involve checks of any forms as they are all ACH withdrawals. She also sounded really patronizing to me and I told her so. She then informed me rather rudely that she also didn't like the attitude that I was giving her. Excuse me lady, but you're the one who's calling me a liar and telling me that I missed a payment and I'm the one with the attitude? Zero customer service skills from this one. I then called again and was finally given the help needed from another collections agent, Sergio and then finally Troy. I paid the damnable outstanding balance and settled with the two late payment fees from CEFCU. After I pay off the car, I'm never dealing with CEFCU again. I had to go through so many hoops and bad customer service before getting the help I needed. read more

I was a member when they were Valley Credit Union for over 20 years. They were always helpful and easy to get a hold of. This merger has been a disaster! Can't get customer service. Can't get into my online account it's been down since the merger. I have no idea what my balance is. It's one big mess. So to add on to this mess, today I used my debit/credit card which I was told several times by a cefcu representative would still work and guess what? I was left standing there while the cashier told me my card was declined! Nice. Can't get money out, can't access my account. My son's birthday is this weekend, I need gas in my car and my bills will no doubt start bouncing. They've managed to ruin my great credit rating in one weekend. Good job! It gets better every day. Day 3 of dealing with this mess of a merger. I needed to transfer money from savings to checking. I did transfers all the time with Valley Credit Union. No biggie, very easy. Not at CEFCU. I set up my transfer and a big yellow exclamation comes up with "unexpected error occurred" contact your representative. Every thing I do with this new banking system leads back to contact a representative. I need to be able to do transfers when I want to and not have to worry if they will go through or not. The nightmare continues. Lining up other options so I can get out of this horrible bank as quick as possible. So sad...VCU was awesome. All this bank is good for is migraines. Oops! They did it again. Tried to get onto my old VCU access with the link they give. Guess what? It tells me my account access has been temporarily disabled please contact the call center. Wow....speechless. Oh Dear God!!! Will the nightmare ever end. Slowly trying to move my funds to another bank where I can finally rest in peace knowing they will be safe and I can access them whenever I need to . But even though I entered all the right info, the other establishment was told by CEFCU that the new account info doesn't belong to me. Will this ever end. Get me outa here!!!!!! It's like I'm trapped in a bank where I can't access my account or transfer the money to an establishment where I can access my money. Someone wake me up from this nightmare!! Well, here we go again. Unfortunately I have a car loan at this bank and my online transfer isn't working....again... There's no way to pay my bill this month unless I take time off work to go into the bank. I can't transfer any money from my savings to checking or checking to savings either. It keeps popping up with an unexpected error message. What a mess. Banking used to be easy. The good news is, in a couple of weeks I should have all my direct deposits transferred over to USAA and hopefully my car refinance too. Then I can close my accounts down and be done with this nightmare. Trying to figure out my statement and being able to get accurate balances is impossible. I used to be able to see what monies I had available and bills I paid would be immediately in pending transactions so I knew what I had to spend in my account. Now It could take days before I know my real balance. This means you could spend money you think you have but don't. I'm ever so closer to having all my direct deposit checks in my USAA account so I can finally get out of this mess. Their banking is so easy and accurate. I never have to worry about this stuff. Plus I can take a picture of my checks and get them automatically deposited immediately anywhere I am. Can't wait! I truly believe Freddy Cruger himself will jump out at me with his knife hands because I can't wake up from this nightmare. First of all, I go to look at my balance which was substantially lower in my checking account to find they posted transactions I had done 3 weeks ago! If you do stupidly choose to bank here, be sure you go back to the old way of having written ledgers of all your transactions so you know what you truly have in your account because their balance will never be accurate and you could truly be in trouble paying bills thinking there is money in your account. You can't trust online banking here. Next, I transferred monies to my new trustworthy bank account at another establishment ( trying to slowly close down my accounts) My new bank shows the transfer beautifully, however, CEFCU shows I still have the $1000 in my account that I transferred! REALLY? Maybe they will update that 3 weeks in the future..lol.. Although, I am hoping to be totally free from this bank by then. Was just approved by my other bank for a much better car loan. So when I pay off my existing car loan at CEFCU I can finally have a party! read more

I unfortunately need to add a 1-star review after the takeover by CEFCU. As others reported, on May 1st, I lost access to online banking, my VCU ATM card started getting declined (despite an explicit statement that it would still work), and I couldn't activate the new (and hideously ugly) ATM card until this morning, 4 days later. VCU was just okay--I like the idea of a credit union, and the people were always very friendly, but they had recurrent problems with their systems. It was a little unnerving that they would go completely offline for more than a day, several times a year. But that's nothing compared to this. How a banking institution can bungle a transition like this is incomprehensible. Now I finally have online access, yay, but my transaction history--years long--has vanished. I stopped receiving paper statements as soon as it became an option, and now I wonder if that history is gone for good. I'd have to think that CEFCU is under considerable risk of liability and/or regulatory compliance here, but they sure aren't acting like it. I'll be moving my accounts--opened in 1997--as soon as possible, and I would strongly advise anyone considering opening an account to go somewhere else. read more

This cefcu bank take over lost my money for 5 days during the take over, and left nothing to look back at on my accounts. Could you imagine going to walmart and being denied at the register knowing you have close to 10k in the account? They put a 1000 dollar limit on my check cards. Ridiculous impersonal service compared to Valley CU. I am planning to run not walk as stated by other members. This sucks as I will miss the service I had with Valley :( read more

Worse experience I've ever had with a bank. Had cash in hand for payment, they add a fee fine. Come back add 800 fee to that. Third time I come in on a Saturday nobody there that can accept payment. Whether the cutover problems are over depends on how you feel about customer service. Valley Credit Union customers CAN NOT ACCESS THEIR BANKING RECORDS from before the cutover because "it was just too expensive to maintain the access for the three VCU branches." Problem is, Valley CU spent a lot of time getting everyone to stop using paper statements and just use online access. And those of us who did that can't get our financial records from last year anymore. The kid in Illinois who answers the 800 line says that they told us...but I read every physical and email message from them (because of the cutover problems where no one could access their accounts) and no, they didn't. And? If you're taking away access to someone's critical financial information? You should do a heck of a lot more than whatever they claim they did, anyway. Want to amend your tax return, or being audited? Need a specific check? You're scr*wed. It's $2/month for paper copies of statements...but statements aren't proof that a check was cashed. And it's $2/check and $15/hour to get those records. But if you wrote 30 checks in a month, you can't be sure WHICH check exactly is the one you're looking for. So you have to pay for a LOT of pictures of checks. I'm checking with the State of Illinois Bureau of Financial and Professional Regulations (which regulates CEFCU) to see if I have any recourse to get my financial records without having to pay outrageous fees. It's my hope that So would I recommend CEFCU, even though new customers who didn't live through the merger are happy? No, because a credit union that would scr*w customers this badly is probably not going to be any more helpful to you when you start having problems. read more

One of the teller make mistake i tried to correct her, and the next week i went there to get some cash , she refuse to help me instead i went to the office manager for help . Last time I used CEFCU for an auto loan was 2009. Time to purchase another vehicle. I received financing through the dealership because it was easier. Had car for two months. I filled out an application with CEFCU, (on-line and very easy on Sunday) to refinance at a lower rate. Monday morning I received an email stating they were reviewing my loan. Monday afternoon received a call from Nehal, at the CEFCU branch on Lincoln Ave, letting me know my loan was approved and to come in Tuesday to sign paperwork. I walked in promptly at 11a met Nehal, no waiting, and was out of there by 1120a. Could not have been any easier. My rate went from 3.99 to 1.99%. I would strongly recommend CEFCU for their customer service, rates and efficiency. read more

Customer Service is NOT CEFCU's Policy!!! The worst banking experience I have EVER had. They charged me $200 in fees for debit card overdrafts when I had set up my account to pull money from a back-up account that had PLENTY of money in it. When I tried to contest this they made me contact the VICE PRESIDENT to plead my case! She was a rude, short-sighted, and self-important cretin who accused me of trying to pull money from an empty account DELIBERATELY!!! Is that any way to treat a customer who has money in your bank? I switched over to Meriwest Credit Union and am MUCH happier. They are much more professional and the services they provide are of a higher calibre. For instance, they keep my business account separated from my personal so that I cannot, even mistakenly, mingle accounts. Their on-line and telephone banking is also far superior. Also, the manager assured me that if I ever felt strongly that a fee was unfair, she would remove it rather than make me unhappy. THAT'S customer service! RUN, don't walk, as far away from CEFCU as you can. read more

I had the opposite experience from the first review. Disclaimer: I am not an account holder, but since we moved from the city down to SJ, and this is the closest CU to our new place, I go there on average once a month to deposit the occasional check. The place is laid out nicely with a play area for kids. The staff is always warm and friendly even with my more complicated transactions. Don't know about their rates, but they are the friendliest bank I've ever been in. read more

I can see why they have a horrible rating. Their ATM would not take my hundred dollar bills (brand spanking new bills) and when I went inside, they said they couldn't exchange it for older one's. Thought I was the only member feeling completely screwed after this merger. I actually didn't like Valley CU either, but my direct deposit is already set up here. They merged, but we had to do all the work to merge our account with CEFCU! I have no online account access, and to top it off there is no customer service available 24/7 to help. You would think they would have this service for the first few weeks of a merger, but NO they dont! STAY AWAY! Valley CU/ CEFCU is not the bank for you....just read the other reviews. So far so great! I came from a big bank until I got a great auto loan rate from CEFCU. I looked into this credit union option and had been wanting to get out of my big pipeline supporting bank anyway so I thought I'd give it a try. The switch was easy and I have no regrets. It's been about 7 months now and have since switched my checking and two savings accounts to CEFCU. I have visited two of the locations and I have found both to have friendly helpful customer service. I called once with a question and was pleasantly surprised that a real person answered! There was no endless phone tree to dial to find someone to talk to. I mostly use online banking and like that they have an app - both are user friendly and have most all the features of a big bank. I know there's more than enough money in there since I just logged onto my account online yesterday to make sure that the Christmas fund is there and available. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'm not going over my spending limit. I finally talked to someone, after identity verification etc., she told me: "Oh that card is blocked." BLOCKED?!? I asked why is that and she said: "Someone from Target North Carolina tried to use your card. So we decided to block it." Me: "Okay, thank you for that. But isn't the usual protocol is to call me, the cardholder, to verify first if I'm the one using the card?" She replied: "Yes, but we don't have your phone number so we couldn't contact you. This is why we decided to just block the card for your safety." Me: "I find it hard to believe that you don't have my phone number since I've been emailing your customer service for another problem last week and I always include my contact number with every email. So really that excuse doesn't fly. If you can't contact me by phone, I have my email address that you could have used. Instead, you guys let me use my blocked card that I didn't know about. So you mean if I hadn't called you today and if I happen to not use this card for a long time, I would be unaware that this card is blocked and useless." To top it off, the fraud department decided to send me a new card BUT I would receive it AFTER CHRISTMAS! I tell you I almost swore on the phone (I only use my debit card for Christmas shopping since I've got the Christmas fund saved and set up on it...I never use credit card at this time of the year. Never.) because at that point I felt my faith in credit unions has gone down the drain. What happened to members having a say on their service? The customer service rep even saw it fit to lecture me about how it wasn't their fault that this happened, that maybe I purchased something online that got compromised and that my info became a target of identity thieves and that they are just safeguarding my account. It was as if she's telling me: "Oh for goodness' sake, just be thankful that we're vigilant about your account info and you're not dealing with the bigger issue of having your identity already stolen." Here's what I said to her: "You know what, I don't mean to sound like I'm an ungrateful bitch. I really thank you for safeguarding my account from fraud. But what is unacceptable to me is that you didn't tell me about it and just made decisions for me that I think disregarded my right as a member. Aside from the inconvenience this whole thing caused me at this time of the year even, you guys just trampled on the very backbone of my belief in credit unions. So yeah thank you and goodbye." So right now I'm working on transferring my money to another worthier local credit union and closing my account with this one for good. I've just had it with CEFCU! read more

I have a mortgage they took over from Valley Credit Union. Everything had been great with the paper work I get monthly. I was so happy to know that I got dividends from the profits for the year. This went into a savings account and I made $4,000. Today I going to look for financial planning and maybe another property to buy. read more

The customer service here has gone way down since they changed from Valley Credit Union. I called the main office (not in California) to find out how to display my checks and get a copy of those that have cleared on line, which I have done before and now I don't have that service available to me anymore-it either has to be thru the mail or go to a local office and pick up a copy- they are not customer oriented anymore - and as far as they are "NOT A BANK, BUT A CREDIT UNION" - Well maybe I will be better off at a bank-or another credit union.. read more

They are very polite and helpful. They have great mortgage options for a home loan. There is lots of easy parking spots.

I originally gave CEFCU a one star rating because of the poorly executed takeover of Valley Credit Union. Although I had originally planned to move to another credit union; I gave them a second chance to make good on their promises to improve. Glad I did, they have superior customer service now and obtaining loans and a major refi of my mortgage have gone flawlessly. Their rates are competitive and the year end extraordinary dividend is a super plus! read more

I've been banking here for over 3 years now. Pretty much everyone knows me by name and I really enjoy that. I've never been charged for ATM fees that are at another credit union before. And I usually use the 7-11 ATM near my place since it's part of the CO-OP network now too. Love going here every week and really love everyone here as well!! read more

Posted this under the CEFCU yelp site, figured here would be better: THE worst credit union I've ever seen or heard of. Was a Valley Credit Union member, they switched over to CEFCU. Transactions from 2+ weeks ago have still not shown up. No mobile website, I have to call them and wait on hold to find my balance on the go. When they first switched over and I had to pay my bills online with bill bay their systems were down for days. When I called to explain that many of my bills were now late due to their system errors they literally said "Yeah, it's going to be hard for a little bit".... YOU are the financial institution, DO something about it. When I call almost daily to ask what the heck is going on with my transactions not showing up they admit to having literally no idea when they will show up. When I ask whats the longest amount of time they have ever seen a transaction not show up, "You know, I really have no idea". No one in that place has any idea when I can get an accurate account of how much money I have? I'm switching to Patelco, or someplace that has enough customer service skills to make me happy and satisfied, not just a place that has repeatedly admitted how much they suck and how difficult it is to work with them. read more

I am giving them a two because their bank tellers seemed to know how crazy their policies are. I went in to get change for a $20 bill and they said they do not help anyone who is not a member. read more
