I admit it's been some time which I last visited & my mind wanted a grinder and this place does it well (only hiccup is no sausage). Still cash but you pay when you leave & an ATM in close proximity helps plus if you got eye issues (yours truly) they provide a hard copy so you know what you're options are regardless of soup/sandwich. read more

Out putting around and needed to feed a hungry stomach. The place caught my eye as I was at the stop light. I knew of this from people talking about it at work but never in this area so was always out of mind. Nonetheless I decided to find a parking spot and make my way in. Place was busy. Not so much at the tables but the girls were running around taking phone orders and preparing lunches. Looking at the menu I decided to go with a 14" meatball with peppers and onions. Got a couple of cold cut grinders. They didn't have any lettuce and tomato! I guess you have to ask for them!! The grinder roll was just alright, not much cold cuts either. I've been to celery stalk a few times now and each time the sandwiches don't disappoint. The owner can be a little cut throat but overall a tip is to order and make sure to pay at the end. I've seen plenty of people get yelled at to pay after. Overall now I know what to get so it's easy and flavorful. read more

So I came in here because of he locals claim they have great soups. So I said ok I can always go for a good soup, especially in cold weather. The building looks like a shack -- but sometimes the best food is made in these kind of places. The dinning area looks like it was never redone with the original furniture from when the opened (I don't know 1965) They have sandwiches, grinders, salads and of course soups. The customer service is terrible, I felt like I was not welcome there. I forgot to mention they call the owner (The Soup Nazi) from Seinfeld. Anyway I ordered the Chicken over rice. Great spot in West Springfield. A friend brought me for lunch while we were working together. It was a good local spot. Lots on the menus and you need to be ready when you get to the counter. Set up is to place the order & take a seat. They bring out the food, pay when done. Lots of locals stop to eat here. My first time & I am not a local. But easy to tell who is. This is a great place for lunch. The soup is always great, and the sandwiches are made fresh to order. My personal favorite is easily the chicken salad sandwich. You simply cannot get a better one ANYWHERE. It is the standard to which you will rate all others! As other reviews state, the owner works the register and can be quite the grouch. Come with cash, or expect to use the ATM. These two reasons are the only reasons why I can't give five stars. Sure, the food MORE than makes up for it, but go in knowing what to expect. read more

This is one of my favorite deli's EVER. The food quality is excellent. The help is fast and with one notable exception always friendly. The soup Nazi comparisons are apt, but honestly, only if you make a point of complaining. (He's always been nice to me, but I make a point to be prepared for my transaction, and say please and thank you.) The veggie sub is without a doubt the BEST veggie sub I have ever had in my life. Mushrooms, peppers, pickles, cukes, lettuce, tomato, everything.... The chocolate chip cookies are second only to my girlfriends cookies. (This is saying a lot, honestly.) While I have never had meat there, the omnivores I know that have eaten her corroborate the other reviews here. Next time I am going to have to try the egg salad... I've never been disappointed and always pleased with the food. I'm always careful with the Soup Nazi around. But I've never had any problems. They have a great chicken salad and egg salad, but my favorite is the tuba salad. I always get half a sandwich and a cup of soup for $5!! They have awesome soups. The daily soup on Wednesday is Cheeseburg Chowder, and it's fantastic. The chili and cream of broccoli are also excellent! Their cookies are perfect. This place is delicious and cheap. I got a rare roast beef sandwich on a watercress roll and my wife got a ham and cheese. The meat is sliced to order so you know it is fresh, not to mention they pile it on. We also shared a bowl of bean and ham soup that was hearty, flavorful with just the right amount of spice. The place was pretty packed, and it's obvious from the no frills vibe that people come here for the food. I went around 1:30 on a Thursday and there was maybe 2 tables open in the whole place. Maybe the locals are trying to keep it a secret and that is why there is only 1 review. For the quality and freshness of ingredients, not to mention the prices this place is definitely worth checking out. Another thing worth mentioning is they only take cash so bring some or prepare to pay $2 to use the ATM inside the place. That being said my wife and I ate for $12.37 so it doesn't take much for you to leave happy. My only complaint about the place is they are only open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm so it can be hard for people with full time work to check the place out. So if you call in sick, or get a holiday off give this place a shot you won't be disappointed. read more

I have seen the owner shopping for fresh produce, I have been early in the morning and seen them chopping the vegetables and making the soups fresh. The world needs more places like this to eat at. However, time and time again, the staff (for the most part) are just rude. my family has lived in town for at least 60+ years and our nickname for the owner/cash register guy is Sandwich Nazi, a play off the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. The soups are great, the sandwiches are great, the prices are great, but its as if they have decided to take on the attitude of a Dirty Dicks restaurant...except its not fun or funny. The folks who take your order, particularly the kid in his 20's, seem like you pull them away from something more important. There are a couple nice ladies who work there. Its a internal battle. Normally I'd avoid a place like this for their attitude. But the food really is GOOD. So instead of a weekly visit, they see us once a month or so. Eh...maybe we hit it on an off day, because our experience seems to have been very different from other reviewers'. In our case, it was the food that was the problem. The chicken salad was crazy salty...as in, borderline inedible unless you cut it with mouthfuls of lettuce and tomato to balance the salty flavor. Clam chowder was just alright...but it tasted more like (tarragon?) than clams. The potato salad was pleasantly fresh but suffered from total onion overload...hard to believe I would say something like that, because I'm an onion lover who tends to over-onion everything, but there it is; one bite left me absolutely reeking of raw onion. Ryan's pastrami grinder was pretty good, but the cheese never made it to the sandwich. Highlight of the meal was the chocolate chip cookies, which were pretty awesome. read more

The sandwich that my wife and I were served was satisfactory by itself. When you consider that it was served on top of the receipt if becomes a health issue. From what I saw this was standard procedure. Ownership does not allow use of the restrooms in the rear of the restaurant as you must walk through the kitchen. I was of the impression that restaurants with dining in are required to have bathrooms. I have been in many where you walk through the kitchen area or outside and enter through the rear. read more

Went here today for lunch and had a very pleasant experience.wife and I both had the 1/2 sandwich and cup of soup most yelpers recommend. i had a half bologna(very fresh) and the chicken and rice soup. wife had the tuna salad and the chicken and rice. soup was out of this world good.... for $5 this is a steal! its a little awkward ordering..especially for first timers....but we got the knack of it pretty quickly. owner/cash register man must have been on good behavior today. said "thank you" and wished me a good day. nice enough spot....you won't want to linger long....but for a quick and delicious lunch..at very decent prices....its a winner. read more
