Cellar 53 is a solid wine and liquor store on 10th Ave in the low West 50's. The location is key as there aren't many liquor stores around that stretch of 10th Ave and there is nothing on 11th. You have to go a lot farther south to find anything else or head over to 9th Ave. I like this place because this is not your typical dirty hole in the wall liquor store that just has the basics stacked to the ceiling. It is a very large space, that is very clean and well lit. They have a broad selection of booze and a very good selection of wine. I have found the prices to be in line with what you expect to pay for booze, no surprises. They often have wine or booze company reps conducting tastings as well. The staff is friendly, too. read more

Wow, what an awesome spot to have in the 'hood. Their daily specials are very creative and make me want to come back on certain days of the week (crafty marketing!!) to take advantage of the specials. The staff was friendly, they have treats for your pooch, the prices are great, and the selection is pretty impressive. My only gripe (small one) was navigating the different wine areas. Cellar 53 was there when I had a wine shopping emergency, yes that's right a wine shopping emergency. It was a New Years Eve party and I was on the hunt for a bottle of Muscato. It was texted to me by my wife like I was in the opening sequence of Mission Impossible. Trouble is I have never seen a bottle of Muscato and wouldn't know how to begin. The helpful clerk took their time with my questions and had time to show me around. Question: What's a Muscato? Clerk: It's a kind of grape you'll see it on the label we have a sparkling cider muscato and a regular muscato. 5 minutes later after having tried some samples for deals they had for the day I was out of there sparkling muscato in hand, party crisis averted. I was there this past Saturday looking for some Frangelico which they were out of -- the owner immediately called the delivery person who accelerated their shipment and they delivered the bottle to my apartment within a couple hours of my store visit at the exact time they told me, with the delivery person scurrying away before I could even hand him my tip. I love this place. Great selection of wines (particularly Cabernet Sauvignon which is my favourite). Staff are really friendly and always acknowledge you when you walk in. The manager/owner (lovely bald guy - sorry I don't know his name) is so helpful and talks to you about the wines you like. If my usual wine isn't in stock he always helps me find a great alternative.
