I love it in here. The service is usually amazing, the food is delicious, and I always feel super at ease despite it being very modern in its decor. I was lucky enough to get to try the poutine that they offer during their weekend brunch because Zane was photographing it and it was phenomenal. I also had a small bowl of their chowder which was very hearty with a bit of spice and Zane had their Belgian waffles. I'm a huge fan of the revamped menu and change in promotion tactics, I had been here maybe 3 years ago and it was okay but didn't standout where as now I can't wait to return. read more

I've been coming to this place for over 10 years now and it's all you can ask for in a cocktail lounge with great quality food, cocktails, good music and atmosphere, TVs to watch games, a dance floor on the weekends, and an outdoor patio. Central Social Hall is probably the hottest classy cocktail bar lounge in Edmonton and definitely the place to be on any night of the week. Central Jasper Ave is a super trendy downtown Edmonton spot filled with a lot of beautiful people, classy clientele, a great place to meet people, network, see and be seen. Dim lighting and beautiful retro decor. The ambiance in this restaurant is so cool, you really feel like having a cocktail as soon as you walk in. This place is bumpin on a Friday or Saturday night with a dj spinning beats in the VIP area which transforms into a dance floor section , and a top bar for endless cocktails. This place was amazing! The vibe was great and the waitress was so welcoming and friendly. Granted, it was our first and only time going there so I don't know about the consistency, but all first impressions were great! We got the shrimp gyoza ($12) to share. Surprisingly delicious! When it was suggested, we were kind of skeptical because being asian, we take our ethnic foods seriously. BUT IT WAS AMAZING. I would have to say it was the highlight of the meal. I got the jasper sandwich ($15) because who could go wrong with chicken, avocado, and cranberry compote? It was so good, I devoured it and the fries in seconds! Even though the place was packed and we were only getting wings and we were a group of 9, she made sure we had exactly what we needed and refilled our drinks before we needed one-she is a Service Ninja!! Not only is the service top notch, the wings are fantastic too - super crispy and the sauces made everyone happy. This place has stepped up their game in a big way! The fact that they are the first to admit that they were not the best in the way of gastronomy in the past is commendable. They know this. They admit it. They worked on it. Man, did they ever work on it! Their featured dish for Rodeo Week is a sharable dish with a 7oz. sirloin steak grilled and sliced on top of roasted, smashed and fried baby red potatoes and their fall blend of veggies, which is a yummy Brussels sprout and carrot mix. This is all topped with a caramelized onion and red wine gravy. It's heaven. Simply heaven. Once the meat was done, people were fighting over the veggies! People were fighting over veggies! We didn't get to fisticuffs, but it was amazing. The staff were on top of things, and so warm and welcome. They were there to make the experience as pleasant as possible. I went there for lunch on a week day and was surprised that there was plenty of seating room available. I ordered the fish taco with fries. It was rather tasty. The fish itself wasn't as flavourful as I was expecting but all the toppings inside the taco makes it a delicious combination. Central was renovated recently and the interiors are very modern and bright. It looks particularly stunning from the outside. Inspite of this it feels more cramped than before and it is hard to navigate without squeezing through the aisles. My problem with this location is that they seem to get the reservation for a table wrong all the time, they either have the number of people or time wrong, this has happened to me and my friends three times. On top of that, the servers are rude about this and will not make adjustments even though most of the tables were empty with expired reservation cards placed on top of them. The drinks were good and they have fairly decent deals for happy hour. I tried the frose and looked and tasted great, it wasn't too sweet which is fantastic. The food on the other hand is mediocre, we tried the tuna tataki, the chicken waffle, dry ribs, and the chicken curry and the flavours for most of these were off. Well all I can say is I'm disappointed. We had a great server, great food and great drinks but it was all supposed to be covered because of a previous error the restaurant made with not having the one drink I went in for. It was a really important reason to me as well. I made it clear I was so upset the first time because it was kind of a bit of closure for me and it didn't help that something went wrong, understandable, but upsetting. Just so you maybe have a better understanding of why I was so upset...It was to celebrate my really close friend who passed away in the Humboldt crash. I had finally gained the courage to go to one of the last places we spent a special moment together. It was our tradition for us to get frosé at Central before he left and when he came back every year, and this year unfortunately he didn't get to come back so I thought there's no better way to celebrate my 6'5 ray of sunshine than enjoying our favorite drink at our usual place. I waited to write this in hopes of giving them a second chance to shine and they really didn't. They really didn't the first time either, with their less than enthusiastic server, who could care less about what I wanted, and how upset I was that the frosé machine was broken. They haven't even responded to my message asking what happened and why my one drink wasn't even covered, all the other replies were instant. Hurt. Upset. Disappointed. This is how Central Social Hall has left me feeling after their attempt to make it up to me. I've attached the pictures of the message stating it would be "their treat." I would've had no problem paying for my food, my friends food and drink... but I was hoping they'd at least do me the smallest favour of covering my frosé, that I didn't get the first time. Don't trust this place when they say they'll make it up to you. They won't. ***EDIT *** They've offered me a $50 gift card if I come AGAIN. I'm a decent distance from this restaurant and parking isn't exactly the easiest thing to find. A restaurant making this many mistakes is a complete let down, especially when going into the situation already upset. Also unimpressed since they tried to tell me to come for brunch because "$5 frosé on weekends till 6" when I had already made it clear I wasn't returning anytime soon. The brunch is really good and the menu is generally solid. I like the kettle chips with dip. When it's busy don't order a cocktail, stick to beer or a simple drink. The service is a bit hit or miss. I've been here a handful of times pre-Covid for a fun night out with friends, but recently I went with three girlfriends to celebrate a friend's birthday, and it was my first time trying the food. I really haven't been to any restaurants where an appetizer takes an hour to be completed and served. I'm extremely disappointed by that lack of effort on the food service. Watching the floor manager flirt with patrons for half an hour was also a nice touch too. Anyways from my experience, anything listed as an appetizer should take 20 minutes or less when the ticket goes in. When the restaurant is under 50% Occupancy, it should be quicker yet. It's pretty rare that a single visit to a place completely changes my perception but after experiencing the new menu at Central Social Hall and hearing from business partners Jesse Kupina and Vance Bosch, Central has moved away from its nightclub-focus and chain-esque ways into new and exciting territory. To be honest, Central was never a go-to spot for me. I had been for some lunchtime work meetings and some late night drinking but the draw of the place was always the size of the venue and never the quality of the food. I can safely say that notion has been completely blown out of the water by the introduction of a new menu that puts a greater focus on local ingredients, freshly made dishes, and unique spins on classic pub food. I was able to experience a vegetarian twist on the Chef's table at Central and every single dish was not only delicious but also absolutely massive. The generous portions had everyone in the group bursting at the seams by the end of the evening as echoes of mmmms and yummms could be heard throughout our group. The veggie menu consisted of tempura battered pickles, local baba's perogies with caramelized onion sour cream, an amazing spinach salad with avocado hummus, candy cane beets, quinoa, seeds, and ribboned carrots, a spicy and rich linguini, and finally piping hot donuts with rosemary anglaise dip. The salad in particular is worth highlighting as it's rare to find a salad that truly stands out but this one had tons of protein, incredible flavour, excellent texture due to ribboning the veggies, and was beautiful to look at thanks to some very picturesque candy cane beets. Each bite of huge and varied dishes went down easily while the Central owners passionately discussed their approaches and influences for the food. Central began with a focus on its nighttime atmosphere but following some renovations and months of re-working the menu (and the processes that support it) it's clear that they value fresh, unique spins on classic pub fare. I was particularly impressed with the effort they put in to locally sourcing some of the foods that we come to take for granted. For instance, their flatbread is made in-house, their perogies are Baba's perogies from St. Michael's here in Edmonton, and their deep fried pickles are battered in-house rather than the standardized frozen stuff at most other pubs in the city. The impressive part about Central's new direction is that it hasn't come at the cost of what they did before; the pub still has a great nighttime atmosphere and a great deal of space for large groups but now the food has finally caught up with the promise of the venue. I went here about a week ago with a friend who was taking me out for my birthday a few days before. We chose this place because it is in the same building as the TM meeting we met at so we had eaten there before and it not only fulfilled both our requirements (her: fish tacos -- me: steak sandwich) but according to her it made the best fish tacos in the city! The bad news, no more fish tacos on the menu. The good news, the steak sandwich still was. While the steak sandwich was more than fine I must admit to liking going to State & Main for their steak sandwich because they give you two sides with your sandwich and they have (or rather had as well - wtf!) an awesome soup choice of tomato bacon soup (RIP). As you can see, the main takeway (get it? lol) is that I hate change. Bring back my friend's fish tacos if you want to see us again. read more

Total FAIL. I went here for a big group lunch - since we were told we didn't need to pre-order ahead, 20 or so of my co-workers ordered their lunch from their "20 minutes" lunch menu, that was exceedingly simple. Mostly sandwiches, soups, salads, fish & chips and the like. Our orders were in at noon. A lot of time goes by. The group of six ladies beside us were finished by 1pm; a few other tables (3-4 people) were still waiting for their lunches as well. By 1:20, we were told "10 minutes more" for most of the remaining orders. A handful of our group had received their food, so it's not like they were waiting for everyone's food to be ready before bringing it out. By 1:35 pm, several people had left because they never got their food. What's so hard about making stuff that you have to deep fry or assemble is beyond me. Okay, food preparation can get slow sometimes, but the fact that CSH served the same food we ordered to other people that arrived at the restaurant way after we ordered was just ridiculous. Apparently, our "large group size" warrants the longer wait...which is strange because I'm pretty sure you're just serving the same food. If our orders are in and the same dishes are being made, shouldn't they go to our table? Do they deep fry things lovingly in single batches? Avoiding at all costs in the future for any groups bigger than 1. read more

The new brunch menu here was so yummy! This was my first time to eat here. I didn't know what to expect with the name Social Central Hall. It looks kinda of like a nice pub/restaurant though the quality of the food surely exceeds the quality of any average pub. The food looked like someone put an effort into putting these dishes together. The food tasted better than most breakfast meals you can find at other places. To start, the pineapple mimosa was a nice refreshing touch to start the gloomy morning outside. The Belgian waffle was so fluffy and light. The not too sweet peach compote coupled with the airy chantilly whipped cream was like heaven in my mouth! The Oil Country eggs benedict white cheddar sauce was also just the right amount. There was a generous serving of sausage. I liked that the sausage was cut into little pieces versus a large slice of ham that can slide off the bread. The English muffin was nice and toasted. Best of all was the perfectly poached free range egg sitting on top. Altogether this was a tasty upgrade of the usual eggs benny. The Cure was also an interesting take on a typical poutine. There was a generous portion of fries, definitely shareable. On top was tasty red wine gravy. Perched on top of the fries were again perfectly poached free range eggs sitting on top. They've definitely mastered the art of poached eggs here! Overall, I'd come here again. I noticed paint spots on the chairs (dry of course) and confirmed that they also host PaintNites here. I have lived downtown for 4 years now and I have no idea why I have never been to social hall. This place is fantastic. The local DJ is really good and can read the crowd to keep the party going. He plays a lot of 90's music remixed to draw everyone onto the dance floor. The staff is very friendly and attentive. As soon as anyone on our table was done their drink she was right there with a new one. I think this can easily be a new favourite hangout. Come on out and be social! read more

I work in the Associated Engineering Plaza where the doomed sushi restaurant was situated. I am unsure of the name, but when I read the eviction notice on the door when I first started there, they did not look like they were very "upstanding" tenants. I was excited to see that construction had begun with a new tenant and was intrigued by their marketing campaign. They had a few quirky videos that were advertising "Public Conversation". I scoured Twitter and the internets to see what I could find out about them, which wasn't much. The last month or so of the campaign they finally gave their operating name "Central Social Hall", got their website, Facebook, and Twitter on the go. They are part of the Two12 Social Co. The menu was not online on opening day which was a little disappointing. They had however, left a copy at our reception desk to get some interest from the neighbours. I was also fortunate that one of my clients was hired in the kitchen so he was able to recommend some of the things that he like on the menu. The decor is inviting. They have cozy two person booths lining the walls and group booths on the floor. The monitors were set to "Conversation Starters" - bits of trivia and information to discuss. The Manager was there to greet people and direct them to seat themselves. They do not currently take reservations for lunch. The menu is a one page affair - relatively standard "Gastro-Pub" fare with their own flare on a lot of the items. Appetizers run from ten to thirteen dollars, salads from ten to eighteen dollars and entrees from fifteen to seventeen dollars. The beverage menu is where Central Social Hall differs from the rest - they have a lovely variety of craft beers and martinis on tap - yes you read that correctly! Martinis on tap! Since I was only there for lunch that day, I chose the Crispy Mac & Cheese;" Deep fried Mac & Cheese squares filled with premium cheese and ham; a new spin on an old favourite." The texture of the Mac & Cheese was pleasant. I found the taste was rather bland. I would have like to have tried it with a sharp cheddar or have had some hot sauce to accompany it. My lunch companion had the "Fruit and Nut Salad" which she commented, was very refreshing and tasty. I chose the appetizer as the main for lunch so that I could indulge in one of the three desserts on the menu. I chose the Creme Brulee. Beautiful presentation! The signature in chocolate and berry on the bottom is a very nice touch. The raspberries brightened everything up. The kitchen did a beautiful job of torching the sugar - it had a very nice crust on top. The custard was smooth and tasty - not heavy or overpowering. Very tasty. My lunch companion chose the Red Velvet Cake which was also very beautiful - very deep red. She commented that it was good but she had made better at home. The downtown restaurants are notoriously busy at lunch and most strive to get the patrons through lunch as quickly as they can so they can get back to the daily grind. I was a little disappointed in the time it took to get the food to the table - 40 minutes. I was almost hesitant to order dessert but decided it should be relatively quick. I was late to get back to work, but luckily my lunch companion was my boss. Will I go back again - yes. I will chalk it up to opening day jitters and certainly give them another try. I am a "three strikes and you're out" kinda gal. I can see myself sipping martinis with friends and engaging in "Public Conversation". My first impression upon entering this establishment was I don't spray-tan, or go to the gym enough to fit in with this crowd. Also, I now need a hearing aid. Grumpy Elder aside, the food and service was pretty good. A friend and I went there for after work drinks, and got some appetizers to share. The salmon rolls were amazing. The Charcutterie plate was a little lacking. We felt there was way too much meat, and not enough cheese or sauce for the bread. Luckily, they were pretty accommodating and gave us a cheese plate for free! A little while after, a manager came by with a maple dijon sauce that went really well with the abundance of meat. Did you know Central had a food menu? What about a brunch menu? If you haven't tried it you are SERIOUSLY missing out. Yelp hosted a 'Book it to Brunch' event last Sunday and I have done nothing but 'book it to the gym' ever since... Don't misinterpret that end result...it is entirely my own fault...I just could not stop eating. The brunch is that good! Chef, Jesse, and the Central staff were the perfect hosts for Sunday brunch. They explained their menu, the concepts and how they are working to source local ingredients for all their menu items (Hello, brownie points!!). The Food: We started with the Italian Sausage and Mushroom skillet. The sausage is made locally and the eggs were poached to perfection. A unique twist was the potato base and poblano white chedder sauce. YUM Belgian waffles came next and these things were the perfect combination of crisp and fluffy. Made from scratch right in the kitchen! The waffles are paired with a seasonal fruit compote, we tried cinnamon and peach! I was already full come dish 3 but we sampled the Oil Country Benny. This came with bacon, Italian sausage, caramelized onions, the perfect poached egg and poblano white cheddar sauce instead of hollandaise. Last, but definitely my favorite was 'the cure'. Brunch style poutine with those perfectly poached eggs! The portion is huge and comes with all the classics- fries, cheese curds, red wine gravy PLUS that amazing poblano white chedder sauce. Need to cure hunger, a hangover, heart ache? You name it...this dish is the solution! The Drinks: We started with pineapple mimosas and got to sample the Blonde Postmark Beer (check out their social media accounts- job well done!). Overall, this brunch was worth every single bite. I will definitely be back for more!! Tip: Central offers FREE PARKING behind the building after 5 pm and on weekends! I like this place. They are putting a strong foot forward to distancing themselves from every other pub, starting with their food. I like the interior, lots of warm colours and natural materials everywhere make it feel almost like a ski chalet/clubhouse. This place will feel great on a white wintery day. The service staff were excellent. Everyone that served while I was there were really on their best game. Polite, attentive and efficient. Cassandra stood out to me because she helped my table almost before I could ask for help, on two occasions. That's on-the-ball top notch service. You just can't find staff like this everyday, so hold on to those servers, #centraldtyeg Jesse, they make this place. The best food in the world is useless if you can't get it to your customers efficiently. The menu is emerging as a stand alone culinary experience. They are finding their way, and have almost achieved something truly unique. I'll be honest and say that they still have a little way to go, some dishes are a hit, some miss on a few things and need tweaking for flavour and presentation. I can't wait to see what comes up in the coming months as they start to flesh out their food niche in a crowded pub fare market, all the while sticking with fresh local ingredients. I suggest taking it up a notch like 'as a dictator of a country, what changes would you make?' or 'when was the last time you were proud of yourself?' Now those are question that reveal character! I like this place just fine. Had Gin and Tonics all night with the pulled pork sandwich with arugula salad, which I ordered after being told the scallops and duck confit weren't available (a bit annoying). The food and drinks were satisfying but nothing eye-poping. That being said, I really enjoy the atmosphere. Lots of different demographics in a spacious place with a hip vibe. Central Social Hall is everything it looks like as you walk by and see inside it's large glass walls. It's loud, very busy and extremely trendy. They have decent specials a couple nights a week. It is often hard to find a table. They play a really interesting mix of retro dance music, kind of like listening to the 90's playlist on songza. They also have martinis on tap, which are good but incredibly sweet (I do quite like the passion fruit one). I much preferred the top shelf grapefruit one I tried as well. I have only tried one thing on their menu, their veggie flatbread ($11). I was really happy that they let me specialize my order to have the veggies put on raw after it was cooked. It made it really yummy! Other fare looked decent, if a bit on the pricey side for generic bar food. Every time I have gone the service has been OK. I feel like the servers check in constantly when we just get a drink, but not so much once we're ready to reload. The food took a long time to come when we ordered it but it was pretty busy in there. CSH is not going to become my next watering hole, but I'm also not opposed to it on principle. This is not the place to go for quiet conversation. I don't love the bright and trendy atmosphere that comes off as a bit garish to me, but that's a personality thing and not really an admonition of the place itself. read more

Came for a surprise bday brunch with my family and friends. The Beautiful Salad was really delicious. It was very fresh and the veggies were all nice and crisp. I also very my appreciated that the waitress in fact remembered to bring my dressing on the side, which doesn't happen very often. The avocado hummus was so tasty - it felt a little out of place coming with the salad, and the salad was so large and filling I didn't eat as much of it as I would have otherwise, but it was still really good. Everyone enjoyed their meals a lot except that those that ordered eggs benny had to send them back becasue the potatoes were very cold. All in all, I'd go back. read more

I've been to Central Social Hall quite a few times, and I think how good it is really depends on what you're looking for in the experience! On the plus side, I like the space itself. Central's patio is also quite lovely - well-shaded, and it offers excellent people watching opportunities. Also excellent is the service. Most of the servers I've had here are quick to offer refills, and are friendly as well as attentive. Finally, their happy hour specials are hard to beat. These things make coming here for a post-work beverage a real treat. The food is where I struggle. I've tried all kinds of offerings off of the old and new menus, ranging from oysters to sweet potato fries and chicken burgers. Unfortunately none were particularly well executed. I recommend Central, but more as an afternoon/evening patio place than a restaurant. read more

I love this place on Saturday nights! I think they have the best music for dancing. It is mostly top 40 with a combination of hip hop. On Saturdays, the dance floor opens at 10pm. At some point it will get crowded in there as the floor is not that big but the music is good, so it gets full. There is a small bar just next to the dancing area where you can get your drinks fast and then go back to dancing :) This place is good for birthday celebrations, bachelorette parties, etc. Make your reservation and get ready to have fun. Food is also tasty and the service is good. They have a small patio that you can enjoy on those beautiful summer nights. There is some parking available reserved for Central Social customers, but it might be full if you arrive after 11pm. Washrooms are in good condition but as any other night club's washroom, those can get a little messy as the night progresses. read more

The first time I ever went to Central Social Hall, I had a great time. The food was amazing, the service was great, and the atmosphere was vibrant. The menu has changed since, and not to their benefit. The charcuterie board I split with my dining partner was lacklustre. The meats were cut so thick that we had to use our knives and forks to cut them into smaller pieces; eating a chunk of Italian cured ham is like eating shoe leather. These kinds of meats need to be sliced thin to enjoy them. The cheese selection was the usual staples: blue, a Gouda, a type of Brie, and another harder cheese. Served with only 4 crostini, it left my partner and I having to finish the rest with our forks. A little disappointing. Our server was welcoming, and polite. Every thing was mediocre up until the bill came. The food wasn't anything to write home about. The service was horrible. We were waiting upwards of 45mins each time we ordered things. That was when we were able to eventually flag down the waitress and get her attention. When each of our bills came they tried to spring a more then 18% gratuity tip on us. A) 18 % is the standard which I understand. B) it worked out to be more then 30% for each of us C) There was no warning sign anywhere on the menus or any signs in the restaurant that either of us could see. Nor was any of us warned when we booked the table. D)The service does not justify the outrageous gratuity tip. Not happy and not impressed. Probably won't be going there again. I gotta admit I was wicked hungover when I arrived to the Yelp brunch. Nothing like a little day drinking on a Sunday to chase the fog. We had some delicious pineapple mimosas to start. I had green tea. Bigelow brand. First course was poached egg. Done just right on perfect fried potato with Italian sausage and arugula. The next dish was a light, crispy waffle with Chantilly cream and peach compote. Delicious. A beer break with a 4.2% Blonde ale from Postmark Brewery. Very high quality beer. Eggs Benny was good, but a bit cold when it arrived. (They were serving a LOT of us at once) The English muffins were pretty tough, but the caramelized onions made up for it. White cheddar sauce is something new for me. It's a winner. The most fantastic dish was called "The Cure". Shoestring fries with an amazing mixture of sauces. Red wine gravy and white cheddar poblano . Good Gravy! It was accompanied with a perfectly poached egg. Poached eggs are one of my favorite breakfast foods, so I was pretty happy with today's menu. I will definitely come back to try some more dishes. I heard they have a killer omelette. With 24 beers on tap and sports on the big screen, this could be a great hangout. I love this place. I've been a couple times now and each time I've gone has been really enjoyable. The drinks are great (nothing beats martinis on tap) and the staff are extremely friendly. They play great music and remixes of top 40 music. The only downside to this place is the food takes a while to come so order it as soon as you get there or before it gets too busy! read more

This is a great place for brunch! Everything is home made! No freezer meals here. I was quite surprised at the quality of food because I just expected it to be pub style food. They even try and source from local suppliers for eggs, sausage, etc. I especially enjoyed "the cure" which is a breakfast poutine with eggs on it. Homemade gravy which was very tasty. For gluten free, they have a breakfast taco! This was awesome. Really fresh with salsa, eggs, avocado, cheese and hot sauce on the side. I was pleasantly surprised at how they made it work. Very unique and delicious. My husband loved the pancakes with a fresh peach topping! It is really nice and spacious inside. Lots of seating for big groups as well. Has a relaxed and modern vibe. Service is great and the manager paid special attention to my gluten allergy which I really appreciate! If you are looking for a place to go on the weekend check it out! It's such a shame about all the construction outside because this is an awesome place inside, great ambience, comfortable seats, fast, friendly service and a wicked menu. I came here for a quick lunch with my husband on a Sunday and it was DEAD. The waitress said the construction is really hurting them, but it looks like a great place to go out at night with a group of friends, I hope it makes it! The bathrooms are really nice (this is important!), and I almost forgot to mention the perogies, YUM! Worth a visit just for that. read more
