BEWARE, DANGEROUS…read more.. Everyone should be aware of the HORROR STORY that will ensue if you hire Waldy Corniel. I interviewed 6 contractors and unfortunately I chose Waldy Corniel who tried to be as sweet and nice as possible until he got the job and then this experience turned into a real disaster. Little did I know that by doing so, I was hiring a deceitful and a totally incompetent guy who created numerous problems that have continued for over 7 months and are still far from over and we are talking about a studio apartment of 400+ sq. ft only. 1. Shortly after commencing work, on the second day Waldy Corniel and his crew drilled a hole through a gas pipe in the kitchen. This caused the department of buildings and ConEd to shut down gas for every shareholder in our coop for 5 months costing the building hundreds of thousands of dollars in renovations and nobody could cook or do laundry in the building which created an enormous pain for the families of 87 apartments. 2. The building wouldn't let him continue work until they were up to code and every gas pipe in the building was redone and approved by government agencies. My son didn't have a place to live and had spent thousands of dollars on hotels, short term rentals and Airbnbs when the contractor guaranteed that the whole renovation would only take 2 weeks. 3. After the building finally let him in, he promised us he would expedite the project and finish everything in 3 weeks only to follow up with excuse after excuse. It has now been another 3 months and he still hasn't completed the job. 4. He said that due to the tremendous inconvenience that he subjected us to, he wouldn't charge us for installing the new tiles in the bathroom. LIES. He brought us an invoice for over seven thousand dollars for the tiles and his labor and when I confronted him that he promised not to charge for all those things he said angrily that I could tear this invoice up and then started dragging the job week after week, month after month though I paid him every penny in advance otherwise he would not continue working. 5. He offered to hold onto my son's belongings when he busted the gas pipe, because my son's lease expired and he had to move his furniture and all other belongings somewhere, lying that he had his own warehouse only to return everything water damaged causing thousands of dollars worth of losses including Bose speakers, oil paintings (some original). The mattress had an irreparable stench of rotten water and was covered with mold. All my son's clothes was ruined and also covered with mold. When we opened the bags the huge water bugs were crawling out of them. When I confronted him about this he would ignore me every time having no remorse or apology and then told me that he kept it in somebody's basement in New Jersey which was flooded causing us again tens of thousands of dollars. 6. He measured everything in the kitchen incorrectly. We had plans to install a Lazy Susan, a wine rack, and a mounted microwave and everything that was purchased had to be either returned or thrown out because all of his measurements were faulty. Not sure what kind of a contractor messes up something that is as basic as measurements. He showed me the drawings of the kitchen saying that his "designer" measured everything and that's what he would install before he started the job which I approved instead nothing would fit and had to be returned and redone over and over again. 7. He threw out all of our doors and 7 months into the project advised that IKEA no longer sells the size we needed. He said he could recommend his friend who makes custom doors. This was another $5,350 hit and was COMPLETELY HIS FAULT as we wouldn't have ever thrown them out to begin with had we known we wouldn't be able to get the IKEA doors as promised. Then he said it was not even in his contract, if so what right did he have to throw out our doors without even discussing the price for them. He removed a smoke detector, the intercom which is discontinued and it is illegal not to have them in the apartment and no matter how many times we requested him to return our personal property he would simply ignore us. 9. Waldy has yet to completely finish the job. Our gas stove still hasn't been turned on and to turn it on we have to pull permits from DOB which will cost thousands. He is yet to install our intercom and the building said that we will be fined if we don't get it within the week as it is illegal not to have it. I hope this nightmare will end one day and we can finally get on with our lives and live in peace. It has been a ridiculous amount of time, aggravation and appalling experience and should never happen to anybody. I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO MESSAGE ME OR CALL ME FOR FURTHER INFORMATION REGARDING MY EXPERIENCE. PLEASE BEWARE. DO NOT USE THIS MAN OR HIS COMPANY NO MATTER WHAT. I was given honest information and recommendations on various styles I was interested. We decided to follow Spase's advice ( the owner) and wait a few weeks until a sale started on the line we liked. Placed the order on them and also followed their recommendation for the countertops. These guys make it easy to replace your cabinets. Bring space measurements and they'll give you free 3D renderings and estimates. They are tech savvy and responsive to issues, keep in mind that any additions to orders come from the factory. Countertops were made in less than a week and the workers who installed were prompt, courteous, and clean. However, the countertop standard thickness was smaller than the previous countertop which left a gap. When I called to ask if they had any ideas how to fix this gap, the office woman called me and told me "it has nothing to do with measurements" (when of course, if they had told me about the discrepancy before the install I could have had my contractor build up the base to close the gap) and proceeded to tell me it was her "job to tell me why I am wrong". When I got mad because she kept interrupting me to tell me the same thing over and over, she told me I was "mean". She also insisted she was "not trying to argue with" me as she was interrupting and arguing. I did lose my cool and dropped an F bomb which was not OK but literally just needed her to say (which she eventually did) "let me send someone over to take a look" but also had to add "and to explain to you again why you are wrong". This was a fairly large project - redoing 3 bathrooms, the floors and moving a wall. The highest praise I can give is that we continue to recommend her to all of our friends doing renovations, and she'll be the one we go to for our next project. Nearing the end of our current project, we've seen her in many different parts of the process and have been impressed by each one. At a high level, Amy delivers high quality work and communicates quickly and effectively. At the start was design and development - where we are painting our vision for our project and Amy is turning it into actual designs and hardwood/tile samples. We started with inspiration photos, and then from there went to actual material selection. When choosing materials Amy was great at presenting 3 options, while always being willing to go back to find more when we didn't quite like them (which I think only happened a couple of times). For this phase, I think the best thing we did was find clear inspiration photos that she turned into actual things. Main recommendation is to pay attention to the stuff that you might not normally - where will the fire alarms go? How high are the fans? Where are the outlets, and where are the switches? One great thing Amy did here was show a lot of cost awareness and advised us on where to splurge and where to save. One thing that did surprise us here was the cost of millwork - it was generally much more than we anticipated (expect about $1000 per linear foot), so definitely factor that into your budget. When it came time to choosing a contractor, she streamlined that whole process as well, providing a few recommendations and arranging interviews. With the contractor we selected, she handled our contract negotiation expertly. For this phase of the project, my big recommendation is to make sure that everyone is clear on the timeline, and that part of the contract includes shared responsibility of any fees your building might charge for going over a deadline. Likewise, include requirements around ordering materials before the kick-off of the project, if you have the space to store them. This will greatly help streamline things. During construction, she primarily worked with the contractors directly to prepare orders and answer their questions about the schematics. The answers were always in the schematics, which showed an enormous attention to detail that I'm frankly envious of. Our project got a little bit off of track due to ordering delays (hence - order before you start), and she was the one that got it back on track by getting us and the contractors in a room to make sure that all of the orders were there. Finally, for adaptability there was the design side - one piece of millwork came in significantly more expensive than we expected ($15k for doors!) and very quickly she came up with a significantly more affordable option that I think is going to look just as good. You should hire her!
