This store has been around for a long time, maybe even since the 80's(?). I find they are always very patient, helpful and accommodating when I order. One of the ladies at the cash register is a familiar face and I have seen her there for years. They use real fruit in some of their boba flavors, and have good Banh mi sandwiches, other menu options as well... Last week I put in a phone order for a cake not knowing what to expect. This is one of the area places I saw that had light sponge cakes. The order was picked up today and I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I ordered a 10" cake and asked for vanilla flavor with fruit. Total was around $70. The cake was delicious/ and beautifully decorated. Ours was a very soft sponge cake w fruit in between the layers. I'm not a huge fan of buying bakery and having it mold before I can eat it. This has happened to me more than once at this bakery, so now I know it's not just me. I've purchased these sponge cakes/breads and I'll bring it home and leave it on the counter and 2 of the 3 I bought were filled with mold less than 24 hours later (so basically, it's been sitting around for awhile). My Che Banh Lot that I bought Saturday as well as rubbery; it wasn't even edible. The coconut milk was curdled. Sorry, but please do better. The lady on the phone was very helpful and patient as she talked through the flavors and sizes they offered and how many people it serves. I ended up ordering 1 durian cake, 1 pandan cake and 1 pandan jello cake. They were a huge hit at the party and friends kept asking where I got them from. My roommate and I snagged a whole bag of deformed pandan cake for $4 which is a pretty good deal since we didn't care about the presentation. However, they do sell small pandan cakes for $3.50. Overall, thought the pandan cake was a bit dry and didn't have much pandan flavor. It just tasted like a regular egg cake that's been dyed green. My mother and I have been visiting Cha Kim Phung since my childhood. Our go-to is pineapple buns (bo luo bao) and fried breadsticks (yauh ja gwai), which have had consistent quality. This is my favorite bakery in Eden center and I am excited every time I'm here, which is only a few times a year since I live in Fairfax and parking is near impossible on the weekends (better now with COVID since fewer people are out). I decided on a roast pork bahn mi, which was good, but I wish there were more veggies in it. I also bought a pineapple bun, which was nice and soft with plenty of creamy filling. That one was a great pick, and so were the rice crepes filled with pork and mushrooms. I brought the rice crepes home and re-steamed and browned them on both sides. They made an excellent snack or side dish. My family and I really enjoyed them, bc the package came with a generous amount for only 6$. All in all, a great place to get s variety of delicious foods. After devouring a bún bowl loaded with salty fish sauce, I decided to check out this bakery for something sweet. It's pretty small, but stocked with lots of Viet sweet treats (and plenty of appetizers!). I selected a butter bun, I believe it's called, and a Vietnamese coffee bubble tea. The butter bun had just the right amount of sweetness and the bubble tea, I mean how can you go wrong with Vietnamese coffee?! Because there were so many options, I also bought a shrimp appetizer which consisted of fried bread with a whole shrimp in it. Not sure what that was called, but me likely! Lastly, because I have no self control when it comes to food, I also bought some of the fried rice that they have on display. Delish! The next time I was in the area I stopped in, this time for a banh mi-- I just love how affordable these delicious sandwiches are in the Eden Center. I decided upon a roast pork banh mi and I must admit that the sandwich didn't even make it out of the parking lot! This was hands down the BEST French baguette on any banh mi that I've had in the area! I'd honestly have no hesitation buying a full bag of these baguettes and eating them with just butter! Of the plethora of Vietnamese bakery / Deli shops in Eden Center, I usually hit up Cha Kim Phung for two items: * Goi cuon (Vietnamese Summer Roll) * The house made Cha Lua (Vietnamese Ham or Pork Roll, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%E1%BA%A3_l%E1%BB%A5a) As a bakery, I've had many of their items and I agree that the coconut, taro, and various savory meat buns are just average. However, their Cha Lua IMHO is the best in Eden Center. It comes fried or steamed, and while I like the fried version better, the steamed is healthier so that's what I get. Wrapped in banana leaf, a combination of lean pork, fish sauce, and spices, is steamed until it comes out in a sliceable roll. I cut it up and make sandwiches with it, or top it with rice or noodle dishes. Many other places in Eden also house make Cha Lua, but I just find the Cha Kim recipe to be the most consistent and flavorful. The daily made Goi cuon is one of the best deals going. For $4 (as of this review), you get three humongous stuffed summer rolls with your choice of filling - I usually opt for the classic shrimp and pork - and a side of dipping sauce. There is no indoor seating, so look for the picnic tables and chairs to the left of the store and enjoy. Since these are daily made, the best time to get them is around 10:30am until 1pm. After that, the rice paper wrapper tends to dry out so if you happen to find on the shelf after 3pm, I'd recommend just waiting until the next day. Sadly, the banh mi are on the small side and not nearly as good as some of the purveyors of this classic sandwich. And the bubble tea is about on par with the other places, but I like Cha Kim because they also offer jelly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass_jelly) in addition to tapioca pearls (the aforementioned "bubble" in bubble tea). So lately, I've been ordering the Thai Tea with Jelly which is quite a refreshing accompaniment as I enjoy my Goi cuon on a summer day. read more

Although they offer plenty of baked goods, it is the savory goodies that drew me in. FOOD: Nem Nuong: Solid. You get 5 large balls of nem nuong per stick. Buy a stick or 2 to snack on or add it to something else you're eating such as bun. Chao Tom: On par with other places. It was made well and had a decent thickness. Like the nem nuong, I only bought chao tom to snack on, but would also buy it if I was in the mood for banh hoi. Doi Chien: Solid. The sausage was made well and was quite flavorful. It had a slight sweetness that I was not a fan of, but this was good nonetheless. Ca Phe Sua Da (light) with Boba: Good. My mom isn't a fan of overly strong ca phe sua da, but she thought the light here was just right. The sweetness was perfect, and the ratio of ice to coffee was on point. Durian Shake with Agar Agar Jelly and Boba: Good. You get the taste of durian without the pungent smell; my dad said the sweetness was also perfect. Sometimes Bambu next door and the other Eden Center delis seem a little overcrowded, and that's when I remember, there's always the calm-er vibe at Cha Kim Phung. Their counter food is delicious. I usually get Pate Chaud, the meat pastry, the sesame balls, and some pandan jelly sweet or mung bean cookie. I haven't had the fried stuff, not knowing what it is. Many people pick up the spring rolls 'packaged to go'. I am not a fan of their bahn mi sandwiches. I ate it once but didn't feel that it was put together with care. I've also picked up cut fruit (like raw mango with salt/chilli powder), and other items for sale on their shelves. They sell the Bahn Bao, which are the fluffy white buns stuffed with filling. I've got to comment on their bubble teas and Bubble Smoothies. Their boba are quite tasty. I've had avocado and coffee smothies. I was really pleased to find they were not overly sweet. I think they are slightly smaller than Thanh Son (down the corridor at Eden Center) but certainly on par with the other Delis. I really judge this place by the calm vibe I get here and I like it. The food is definitely just as good (barring the bahn mi -- because the competition here is too high for me to go back after a 'miss'). Imagine the following scenario. A begger panhandling for money right next to one of those Salvation Army donation pots during the Christmas season. Then a crowd of people ignoring the beggar but donating generously to the bell-ringing Sally A volunteers. Seems sorta messed up right? That's sorta how I feel about Cha Kim Phung. I'm shocked this place has gotten no love from Yelp. It's only gotten 1 prior review and from a DC outsider no less. Admittedly I normally go to Song Que next door, because it's really the only ban mi (sandwiches) I've tried and I really like the Banh Mi Ga Nuong (Grilled Chicken Sandwich). Having been to Song Que numerous times I thought it was time to spread my wings a little and try the place next door -- enter Cha Kim Phung. This place is not as large, or as impressive looking as Song Que, but it does seem to offer the basics. I ordered the Ban Mi with chicken. The chicken was not grilled as I'm used to, but was definitely bigger and plumper than next door. The bread was bigger, more chicken, more veggies, more cilantro (which unfortunately meant more to pick off the sandwich), and had mayo, which I wasn't sure if I liked or not. I had the spring rolls too which were good. $3 for 3 rolls. What makes me a fan of this place is that it's more bang for your buck. I'm still a bigger fan of Song Que but so far I think this place is pretty good too. read more

The food is pretty good, and my family had been going here for years... But what the hell happened to the owners here? I just bought 4 chè at $3.50 apiece (inferior to and more expensive than Thanh Son) and a $0.75 sesame ball and paid at the register. Just as I finished signing the credit slip, one of the owners came up to the register, grabbed my bag of goods from the counter, and asked if I paid for the sesame ball, to which I, my mom, and AND THE CASHIER WHO HELPED ME said yes. The owner looked at me skeptically, tore the receipt off the register, and snatched the credit slip that I insisted she examine because surely the owner would recognize that the $15.71 listed was more than what the chè at 4 x $3.50 = $14 + tax would cost, but NOPE, apparently I have too much faith in other people. After a prolonged inspection of the receipt and credit slip, she finally let my mom and me go. No apologies offered, no remorse at unjustly accusing honest customers. I know people are grumpy sometimes and that there are probably shoplifters every now and then because times are tough, but COME ON. To add insult to injury (or injury to insult), one of the flimsy cups they package the chè in broke and spilled all over my coat and pants. D; Next time I want chè, I'll just brave the line at Thanh Son or head over to Huong Binh. Two stars instead of one because the food is still better than anything I can get in St. Louis. :'( read more
